  1. Very curious fact about Orsato: he starts again a Nations League campaign with Germany at home, it happened already two years ago on September 2018 when he was appointed for Germany - France in the first day of the first matchday.

    1. By names it really is a great appointment. I don't know, how Spain will play, but Germany nominated a B-Team

    2. Has Manganelli retired after the UCL final or took vacation?

      Delete
    3. Waiting for the communication by AIA about the new committees for 2020-21 season, with the change about serie A and B working together, it is indeed possible that CL final was last game for Manganelli because he is 45 years old and he would need a derogation to start 2020-21 season. We will know more soon, not later than tomorrow.

  2. With out VAR? :o So it should be AAR

    1. Additional assistant referees project has been officially ended by UEFA because now all focus is on VAR. Unluckily, due to what also happened in recent times, the development has now some troubles, as you maybe know, VAR was planned for this EL group stage, but it has been postponed as well.
So these appointments will be surely more particular for the officials involved, they will have to referee in the old (fascinating) manner. In future almost all UEFA games will provide VAR, but at moment it is very hard to think that it will happen soon.

      Delete
    2. Bad decision to abandon AAR if no VAR is implemented.

  3. Mostly agree!

Soares Dias' place at the EURO should be 99% safe, Collum still has to 'fight' for his (Madden in Saudi Arabia gaining VAR experience and not Collum does make you wonder about Rosetti's plans for the Elite Scotsman).

Quite a standard assignment for Siebert (CL referee) but a very good one for Higler - UEFA are ready to push this Dutch referee. Neither are 'real' candidates to be top class Elite referees from their nations in my eyes.

I agree about Farkas, but on the other side, I don't think it will necessarily be an easy game in Tórshavn and not a bad shout to have a safe pair of hands there from 2nd Cat.

    ReplyDelete
  4. Not sure about UEFA ready to push Higler. IIRC as one of the very few making their Europa League Group Stage debut he wasn’t promoted to 1. Category.

  5. Would you say this is a penalty?
    https://twitter.com/PobednikSrpski/status/1300139119683817473?s=19
I am asking this because of the change to the Law 12.
For the purposes of determining handball offences, the upper boundary of the arm is in line with the bottom of the armpit.

    ReplyDelete
  6. Higler even made his EL debut in 2018/19 season, but didn't get a match last season.

I agree with Mikael regarding Soares Dias and Collum. Madden also had 3 CL matches last season, while Collum had only one . On the other hand Collum got EL R16, while several Elite referees didn't come that far last season. And this week, Collum also has the better match than Madden.

BTW, Ekberg was the only first group referee to get EL R16. Together with today's appointment he might be the frontrunner for the next Elite spot. However, he should be appointed more regularly in CL before a possible promotion, I think.

  7. Debut for Christofi in this level as well

  8. Appointments The Netherlands, both matches to be played in Amsterdam:

    Netherlands - Poland
    Ref: Georgi Kabakov (BUL)
    AR: Margaritov and Valkov (BUL)

    Netherlands - Italy
    Ref: Felix Brych (GER)
    AR: Borsch and Lupp (GER)

    1. Well, that's really strange. I don't understand the policy by UEFA regarding the appointments for Nations League, it seems as there wasn't clear instruction to federations about he fact that they should be considered confidential. Indeed at moment appointments are revealed only three days before the games and names are not disclosed by UEFA before. Federations like Romania and Nehterlands have still a certain interest more than other ones in publishing informations about refereeing so they did that.

      Delete
    2. Great appointment for Kabakov. That wqs a match I expected someone from elite group. Kabakov is for sure one of the main candidates to be promoted in the next round of promotions, maybe in winter.

      Delete
    3. There are no restrictions imposed by UEFA with respect to UNL matches. National FAs are free to announce them as they see fit.

      Delete
    4. FO isn’t mentioned in the article. Found it on the site of the newspaper AD(Algemeen Dagblad). https://www.ad.nl/nederlands-voetbal/oranje-onder-leiding-van-bulgaarse-en-duitse-arbiter~ae092434/

The KNVB self hasn’t published the news. Neither on the official site or on the site of the national (teams). Source isn’t mentioned (offcourse)

      Delete
    5. Thanks for having posted the source. This is very important. We don't want to make public the appointments that should be confidential, but in case of this has already happened on another site, no problem to report it here as well.

      Delete
    6. Well, the unofficial news from inside are the most valuable in journalism :)

Only in this case it would be bad if it can influence the appointment itself, but otherwise I dont see any problem.

      Delete
  9. Exactly, if this blog is a form of independent journalism, it should actually seek to provide inside news, rather than wait for the official green light, provided the news is correct. This makes the difference between independent journalism and official press releases.

  10. OT: I just read in media that Uefa's Executive committee made a decision that in case that any member of the appointed referee team is positive on covid19 he/she can be replaced by a referee from the host country and he/she doesn't have to be a FIFA referee.

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. Important, that this only counts for national team competitions as for now.
(Although I assume, they would do the same in CL, if the only alternative would be to postpone or cancel the game.)

  11. Referees of the year in Germany: Marco Fritz and Riem Hussein

IMO Fritz' selection is not so much for the past season (where he performed alright, but not exceptionally), but for his achievements over the last years. He is regularly used in top matches since 2015, including 2 supercups and a cup final, and usually controls them quite well, thanks to his communication strengths - with partially expressive facial expressions and many gestures (a bit Mateu-like).

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. Why Fritz did not have better achievements in international competitions?

      Delete
    2. Probably other Germans were pushed more: He came onto the FIFA list in 2012 together with Zwayer (who is 4 years younger). The following year Welz and Dingert were added, who were tried in First Group. Later, Stieler and Siebert followed and were thought to have the bigger perspective.
I don't know, whether he did much wrong in his UEFA matches (mainly CL/EL qualification). At least, he was never tried in an EL GS match or a full international.
So now he is one of those, who are valuable as AAR, 4th official or (A)VAR - like some other older referees in 2nd group.

      Delete
  12. Strange replacement in Bulgaria - Republic of Ireland: referee and assistant referees have been replaced, but not the Dutch fourth official Allard Lindhout.

    ReplyDelete
  13. OT: CL third round published on uefa.com: Grinfeld for Kiev-AZ, Ekberg for Gent-Rapid, Kabakov for Midjytlland-Young Boys. I did not expect elite referee in this round.

    1. Interesting assignments so far, a mix between Category 1 who are on their way to get Elite promotion and "low ranked" (at moment, not to intend with negative meaning) Elite referees.
This time these games are even more crucial than past years because single tie, and, we know, Champions League is very important.

      Delete
    2. EL qualification is also partly published already. Mostly 2nd group appointed with some international debuts among them. And Frappart gets another men's match.

    5. Osmers with Tottenham, looks among the most interesting appointments (waiting for Shamrock - Milan). Cuadra Fernández with his FIFA debut in a nice Scandinavian derby, Goteborg - Copenhagen.
The level of assignments for Stéphanie Frappart (now Malta, then the team from Gibraltar, in EL) shows in my opinion a bit in contradiction with Super Cup appointment made one year ago.
Or we should think for sure that committee considers this trophy absolutely not important at all...
Still no Russian assignments, waiting for the missing ones.

      Delete
    6. Maybe they now appoint Frappart to just any men's games to somehow justify assigning her the Super Cup without previously refereeing any UEFA men's matches? Or maybe they are preparing her way to Euro next year?

  16. Good job by Christofi in LVAAND so far: Three correct cards for reckless offences, correct penalty given and now a well-delivered RC for a very obvious and quite brutal Violent Conduct. Well done!

Very nervous end of U21 friendly Italy - Slovenia.

    2. Before situation of 3 red cards, at time 1:50:00 slovenian player get injury and slovenian coach want to replaced him. The ref said to him that he made all the subs before that. Then coach yelled to slovenian players that they “must fuck his mother and play hard” in front of the ref. After that he told to ref another bad words. I think that uefa must sanction slovenian coach even this was friendly match!

  18. Fin - Wal - Goal disallowed 4' after a foul by Wal #13 just before the goal, good spot by AR2 who flagged after a short delay and well communicated by Osmers who made it clear it was for the pull that made Wal #13 unmarked.

    1. Yes Siebert complete mind blank on my part. Siebert having a solid game so far with not much to do but movement is good and no issues from the players even regarding the disallowed goal.

      Delete
    2. FIN #14 receives the first booking of the game, reckless/SPA, well supported by AR2 with a good signal and movement to confirm the foul was outside the area.

      Delete
    3. WAL #18 reckless tackle yellow well spotted and the potential flashpoint managed well too dealing with some silly handbags and Siebert's just upped his presence with a little bit of a temperature rise since the reckless tackle.

    4. WAL#14 lucky to not be sent off.

  19. This happened in MLS and play was restarted with an indirect free kick: https://www.mlssoccer.com/post/2020/09/01/toronto-fc-0-montreal-impact-1-2020-mls-match-recap
Although minimal, there was encroachment by players from both teams. It was a match with VAR, but VAR did not intervene. Shouldn't have been a retake?

    1. Didn't Treimanis repeat this summer a PK for a minimal encroachment by one team while the other team's encroachment was blatant? Was it a similar situation? Cannot find the video... Anyone remembers the situation?

    1. Great, thank you! Do you have any idea what the YC in 75' was for?

    2. Nope to be honest, that's why I didn't post any clip of it.

    3. 11' - clear reckless foul, correct decision to issue the YC.
34' - late challenge, agreed on the card.
53' - correct decision as well, I like the handling of this situation, looks really good!
56' - appears quite soft to me, but I can live with the decision. Christofí was in a good position to make an interpretation, never clear stuff for VAR to intervene here.
71' - correct caution and fully correct RC for violent conduct, excellent spot and no hesitation shown by Christofí to issue the red card. Well done!

      Delete
    4. Thanks for the clips.
11' - Mandatory YC for reckless challenge
34' - The YC to Andorra player is correct, however the previous situation with Latvia's #15 is interesting as well. I think that in this case it was rather an unlucky collision, as player from Andorra put himself in the path of opponent when for the latter it was very difficult to realize that and to stop himself. YC would have been OK, without doubts, but if referee made thi assessment, I can agree.
53' No doubts that this was a correct YC.
56' Good positioning and he spotted indeed a touch on opponent that was not easy to see. One could have whistled simulation by mistake, very good decision.
71' Absolutely excellent decisions, YC for the foul and then RC for the violent conduct for reaction.

I must say I'm very positively impressed by Christofí, very convincing body language and firmness in decision making. Let's see whether he will reach something important for Cypriot refereeing. Looks like he has a kind of very natural authority.

    5. I can confirm the last part Chefren, even outside these scenes his management and authority looked quite sophisticated. One to watch!

      Delete
    6. I watched Christofi a couple of times and i can understand why he was promoted 2 years after he became FIFA referee. LVAAND was an easy match in papers but he was fully ready for the teams, their behaviour and their way of playing. One thing that i really like is the way he use to come out of his "diagonal" to find the best position, like at the penalty situation. What a personality indeed. Also working with Mazic in Cyprus he will improve his skills. One to watch for sure Chefren.

  21. IMO: Correct PK by Collum in RUS-SRB but wrong YC, more like a RC (not genuine attempt to play the ball, DOGSO) for me.

      I agree, RC.
As the foul is clearly NOT a genuine attempt to play ball, I think Collum assessed a SPA scenario in this case, but for me DOGSO and RC.

The 2nd angle can maybe justify YC. It looks like the defender wanted to go in front with his leg but instead missed and tripped the attacker.

      Delete
    3. I agree with Forlan. The decisive contact seems to be tripping and not holding. And tripping is in most cases ball-orientated.
Together with some doubts about DOGSO due to the angle and path of the attacker (75:25 DOGSO vs SPA for me), the YC is at least acceptable, I think.

    2. I also agree with the previous call on Sergio Ramos, foul before the possible 1-1.

    3. Maybe missed YC for Ramos there though?

4 minutes of added time seemed too long to me. There were 5 subs and 1 goal, but not really anything else. The extension was clearly correct though (due to the injury break caused by Ramos).

Before that, a good performance in a quite easy match. One correct no penalty call (79'), otherwise no debatable situations. Some quite tight offside calls, which can't be decided without a line.

  23. Excellent performance by Orsato

    1. You can't be serious in any way. He deliberately ignored two super clear and standard SPA yellow cards. Other than that control, but deciding to not give cards that are clear and mandatory is far from excellent.

      Delete
    2. Also missed yellow card for Ramos for hand in the face (used as tool). 3 missed yellow cards. 8,1 performance. And just before 1-1 Emre Can got a free kick against him when the ball hit his face but Orsato called a foul for handball.

      Delete
    3. For me it’s not correct what you are saying.
Orsato today did quite well like in the UCL final, and I bet that you come from a country of which a referee could have been appointed for UCL final (Spain? Netherlands? England?)
I am not Italian but I recognize a good referee

      Delete
  24. Good, expected level performance by Robert Madden on Slovenia-Greece. He had control of the match and mostly small talk with players. He issued 4 correct YC's (3-1). The match was easy for the referee without pressure and good behavior by all players.

He could be a little more proactive on set pieces.
