  1. So, Grinfeeld is not appointed probably due to his appontment in Supercup. Now I think that his appointment in third round was planned and Brych was maybe a replacement for somebody in third round. Knowing all appointments it does not make me any sens why would he be appointed in third round.
Lot of questions are now opened regarding Pavel Kralovec... What is happening with him? Any reader from Czech Republic who knows something more?

  2. German/Bavarian ref with Austrian club?
With all the respect to Dr Brych, UEFA could avoid that.
    IMHO, of course...

    1. I never understood why Austrian referees were excluded from matches with German clubs and vice versa for a long time. The distance Vienna (AUT) - Bratislava (SVK) for example is just 55 kilometres but there were never such concerns regarding those two countries. Given the current COVID-19 pandemic, I think it is a wise decision to send a referee from Munich to Salzburg.

      Delete
    2. It's not about a distance. I can't imagine, for example, Kralovec appointed to the match of Slovakian team, or Collum - of English one. That's the point I'm trying to explain.

      Delete
    3. The distance between two capitols is not important. Germans and Austrians are close nations, Germanic, and Slovakians are Slavs, far distant than them. Brych whistled at WC game between Switzerland and Serbia, and after big controversies when he didn't give penalty for Serbia (after that mistake in his first match at the WC he was sent home), there were lot of speculations why he was appointed there, having in mind that Germans live in big part of Switzerland and German language is one of the official languages. When we have this kind of situations, no one can understand why refs from Serbia, North Macedonia or Montenegro are not appointed in the matches where the clubs from these countries are competing. There was never any conflicts between these countries, so the criteria has to be that these nations are very close (something like Germans and Austrians). But, rules are obviously not the same. Same goes with Serbia and Croatia, Bosnia or Slovenia. That what happened occur 25+ years ago. We had much bigger wars in the European territory in 20th century. So, if we go back there in 50s, 60s or 70s neither ref from France, GB or Russia should whistle matches that involve German, Austrian, Italian, Hungarian, Bulgarian clubs and vice versa. That would be stupid, of course, so it is stupid that for example Croatian ref can not be appointed in match played by Serbian or Bosnian side.

    4. If it is indeed a rule, it should apply to everyone in the same way. If it is not a rule, but a UEFA preference...

      Delete
    5. If we would like to consider official languages, Néstor Pitana (ARG) should not have handled MEX-SWE and URU-FRA, César Ramos (MEX) should not have handled POL-COL and URU-POR, Andrés Cunha (URU) should not have handled IRN-ESP during the World Cup 2018 and so on.

      Delete
    6. Distance, now languages...
It seems like you understand perfectly what Nole and me are talking about, but for some reasons refuse to admit it.

      Delete
    7. You're right: Unless you still regard Austria and Germany as members of the "Deutsche Reich", I indeed cannot follow your arguments.

      Delete
    8. "DR"? What the hell are you talking about?
Sorry, but your conclusion is so ridiculous than I don't see any sense to react on it. Probably the next step will be "you still regard all Austrians and Germans as Nazis"... Man, you went too far.

    9. To be honest this entire discussion is nonsense to me. UEFA decided to appoint a German referee to an Austrian team, as some time ago they appointed a Dutch referee to a Belgian team. Doesn’t happen often, but it happened. For all we know they’ll appoint Kralovec to a Slovakian team at some moment in the near future. Especially in these times of COVID very sensible. Really don’t see the added value of this discussion.

      Delete
    10. To be honest I think this discusion is pointless. I don't see why German officials shpuld not be appointed for Austrian clubs, Czech for Slovakian clubs, etc. At the moment only appointments where objective political problem exists should be avoided (Russia-Ukraine, Serbia-Kosovo, Azerbaijan-Armenia, Spain-Gibraltar, ...). The same for referee-referee observer appointments. There should no be restrictions (other than political one I previously mentioned). Every observer should be available for every referee to have as much as possible transparent process of observing system. In the last Strukan's match (referee from Croatia) observer was Milan Karadzic from Serbia. As Nole said appointments like this should be normal because we are in the 21st century and we should only lool into the future...

    1. After some minor appointments since 2019 in the Ligue 1, finally a top clash match. Just wait for Nicolosi promoted to Ligue 1, I think next year.

      Delete
    2. Wow, what an appointment for Stéphanie Frappart, what a crazy journey this has been for her ever since her Ligue 1 debut in 2019, I did not see that coming to be honest. Frappart is a well-respected referee in France and she has proven to actually be one of the best officials in the world. She did pick up some decent games already in the weeks beforehand, so based on that, that appointment is based on performance principle (as it should be), not as her infamous Super Cup assignment last year.

Question to everyone: considering that she did pick up matches in UEFA Nations League and Europa League qualifiers and now this assignment, do you believe that she will make her EL Group Stage debut this year? Everything points into that direction, if you ask me.

      Delete
    3. Great appointment for Frappart.
It's absolutely possible that she makes her EL GS debut this year. It wouldn't be surprising at all for me, as she had excellent appointments throughout the recent time (Nations League,...).
Now this amazing Ligue 1 match - everything seems to be preapred for Frappart's Group Stage appointment. And that would be deserved, if you ask me, because of her constant good performances.

    4. I think UEFA is preparing her way toward Euro 2020 next summer. A woman referee at Euro would be a powerful PA action for UEFA!

    1. Maresca was originally appointed as fourth official for Rosenborg - PSV then he was replaced by Valeri because got this game (Lazio - Atalanta) in serie A. As I already reported, Guida should be injured, maybe he will be back on the pitch on Sunday in Lazio - Inter.

      Delete
    2. Would it be smart to appoint Guida to such a big game after longer break?

Prontera in Serie A again! I really like this referee and I would like to see him on FIFA list. Is it possible, Chefren?

      Delete
    3. The break has been long but let's remember we are at the start of season, so it is still possible to see him directly in that game, if you ask me, if he is 100% ready. We will see, otherwise he will start from a low profile game.
About Prontera, I didn't watch so many games, he made a not good serie A debut with a very evident mistake on last season, but his second appearance was good. 1986 born, he could get badge in future but for sure a certain time is needed before talking about that. Let's see how he will perform in this game.

      Delete
    4. 14 people among players and team officials from Genoa have tested positive to coronavirus, immediately after Napoli - Genoa. The check they had before the game had been negative. Now there is a big problem and it is discussed that serie A could be suspended (too many players from one team). Two of the officials who were in charge of Napoli - Genoa (La Penna VAR, Fourneau fourth official) had been appointed for tomorrow's Benevento - Inter (Matchday 1 postponed game) but they have been replaced today, I guess as precautionary purpose, because there isn't enough time to be sure whether they are positive or not before the game planned for tomorrow. It is not an easy situation with coronavirus, UEFA has made a very clear protocol, but of course in serie A is not the same, and now they don't know what to do, this was an unexpected (!) scenario...

      Delete
    5. Yes, Fourneau and La Penna are both out for the game tomorrow.

Now the new appointment for Benevento - Inter:

Marco Piccinini - Luca Mondin - Vito Mastrodonato - Livio Marinelli
[Luigi Nasca - Pasquale De Meo]

    3. Maybe she wants to go live with her couple (Howard Webb) as he's currently working in USA, and she got offered there an interesting refereeing job, e.g. something like "women referee development officer".

In any case, definitely a great farewell match for her!

  19. Best thing about no fans is you can hear the referees, Skomina especially before corners.

    ReplyDelete
  20. Difficult management of Maccabi coach by Brych, I think the German should have sent off him directly after the first YC issued, the coach did not even care about the decision by Brych, continuing his protest.
UEFA referees are too much lenient with coaches, this was a very disrespectful behavior, there wasn't any need to wait, a straight RC should have been issued!

  21. Crucial moments in Skomina game, referee explains to players and team officials from Slavia Praha why the penalty must be repeated, encroachment by keeper. It seems as they didn't know the rule.
I liked Skomina and his approach because he was aware they didn't know too much about that.
The penalty call can be very crucial for Danish team's qualification.

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. Crucial is an understatement! Bit unfair as a high ball came down onto the hand which is slightly out in front of the body, player didn't know much about it.

Correctly retaken as the keeper was off his line.

Though with the amount of penalties we're going to have this season, the referees really need to get them taken quicker! These are professionals who shouldn't need to be reminded about the rules.

      Delete
    2. Penalty handball supportable decision by Skomina.

Penalty retake is theoretically correct but I thought UEFA does not want to intervene in these situation?
In my opinion YC for Slavia keeper is wrong because the first situation is only a warning with new laws and after every second situation YC need to be given.

    3. The YC was shown to the captain Jan Bořil, probably for protesting.
