Taylor to FEYENOORD must be expecting problems

ReplyDeleteLet's start with the remaining Elite we were expecting: all have been appointed, unless Kulbakov, but we know the Russian / Belarusan situation. A bit disappointing to see Soares Dias name there, but as I said he had a weak group stage. Taylor has been appointed in this competition to stay away from spotlights, while I think that Siebert is there as result of his performance in Villarreal - Juventus. Knowing the reputation he has by committe, he was clearly expected in Europa League and not here. Good games, considering the stage of the competition, for the Category 1 referees, especially Petrescu in Rome.
Taylor might be the front runner for UCL final we never know especially if there is no English teams there because avoiding the spotlight for just a play off match doesn’t make any sense!!! It’s one thing to avoid Italy teams and irs another team to be kept out all together.

DeleteI do think Taylor is kept away from spotlight because of the WC play off final (C). Similar to Makkelie f.e. who also got an extremly low profile match before the RMA-PSG appointment. Don't underestimate the Italians and their focus on referees :)
Yes indeed, appointing referees in this stage of Conference League, without VAR, is a double face choice by committee.
ReplyDeleteThey will avoid a name under the spotlight, but then if something very big happens without VAR, this could cost the rest of KO stage. However, we should also add that after the handball goal, the Polish was appointed again. They would do the same maybe with a big Elite in case, I think.

ReplyDeleteSome possible reasons to explain Hernandez Hernandez out from appointment, while Jovic and Jug would have been possible: with 4 Spanish Elite referees and 3 of them in CL + 2 appointments for Sanchez Martinez in EL maybe there wasn't room for another Spanish, considering the teams of nations involved.
DeleteHe could have officiated in ECL, but probably difficult having frequently worked as VAR on Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday on previous weeks.
I think, also Guida has to be listed as candidate as he had the best appointments this seasons among the First group referees.

Tohver at least belongs in the list of referees, where it is a bit surprising, that they didn't get a KO match (although it was clear, because he wasn't on the winter course list). As he is still missing this experience, I rather don't expect him in CL soon.

This is more of a general remark but I feel like as soon as you make a sliding tackle it is deemed to be a genuine attempt to play the ball but many times this just isn't the case. Just look at this situation, no chance for the defender to play the ball but as it's a sliding tackle, it's only a YC.

Yes, one can have different opinions on that topic. For my taste, only giving YC for those situations is the better solution.
DeleteThe LotG only say "attempt to play the ball", so it's not directly stating, that there needs to be a realistic chance to play it. And in most cases one can assume, that the player actually wanted to get the ball (even in a desperate attempt) instead of committing a foul.
So for me, it seems right to give DOGSO-RC only for offences like holding or pushing, which clearly are not attempt to play the ball. Also in extreme cases of kicking or tripping, where the defender's action is not even targetted in the direction of the ball.
One advantage of this approach is more uniformity, because cases like today are not borderline, but with a clear outcome.

The only argument against penalty is that ball came from a teammate.
I think VAR shouldn't have intervened for this reason, but a call by Sidiropoulos was possible. Big chaos at the final whistle.
No PK for me. Sánchez Martínez had an OFR last week in Porto-Lyon to cancel a PK that he initially called in a similar situation.

Delete@quilava it's not the same with that of Sanchez Martinez. Here the arm is clearly in unnatural position, above the shoulder and is going in penalty area. The OFR you're talking, the ball hits the body than the arm.

I think Visser is a great referee
I can report an extremely good Performance of Oliver in Frankfurt tonight. His style suits perfectly to the game. The player Accept his relative lenient style. Very fair Game also. I would like to underline His outstanding communication with the players tonight. Theo are laughing a lot together (for example Oliver and Iglesias at beginning of second half in extra time) and talking very calm.

DeleteI didn't watch the game so can only take your word for it, however the way you describe his performance sounds exactly like his approach in EPL games. He is always in control, has absolutely full acceptance from players as well as a good relationship with many of them. He is certainly a fantastic referee and I hope his European career will very soon reach the level of his EPL one.
In England I feel that he is by far the #1 whereas UEFA prefer Taylor's style. I am not going to start this debate on a night like this when there is no need - I must say Taylor always performs well in UEFA anyway and perhaps, currently, his style is better adapted to UEFA's biggest matches than Oliver.
However, Oliver is still young and has the chance to adapt his style to UEFA matches if this is what is required. I truly believe he is a future UCL final referee and I base this on his consistently excellent level of refereeing in the EPL.
I disagree on his chances for Qatar.
ReplyDeleteAs he only got Conference League in this KO stage, he can't be rated highly by UEFA at the moment.
If he had delivered the same performance e.g. in Lille-Chelsea this week, I would agree more.
