  1. Definitely not good times for Spanish refereeing, all VAR audio from Real Madrid - Almeria has been stolen and published by Barça fans sites. In this case, it is 100% obvious that the process has started inside the CTA, because it is impossible for external people to get such footage.

I must say that I'm impressed by the latter two calls, especially the last one. We rarely see handballs punished by such accjuracy. You should be either a talent or a gambler to whistle in a so quick way after the incident had occurred, surely not even a short time to talk with AR and, most important, with a positioning that can't ensure the best view, at least in one circumstance. It is also extremelòy interesting to watch the management by referee after the second penalty whistled (the first handball), very clear call, but not accepted by Mozambique. He was forced to book the player who even continued after that.
While I think that the first penalty to Ghana was rather soft for my taste, I don't see this as significant contact. In my opinion VAR was at a border, supporting this call. But I can't say clear mistake.
In the overall picture, the performance should be assessed as positive in my opinion especially for the firmness in the penalty incidents. 2-2 goal by Mozambique at the end of the game eliminated Ghana from the competition and at the end no complaints at all about referee's decisions (but in case, in my opinion only first penalty could have been questioned).

  3. Cape Verde - Egypt.
Extremely crucial call for Alhadji Allaou Mahamat from Chad.
    Handball or not?
TBH it is not clear whether goal had been allowed or not before VAR intervention, at first we see celebrations, but then Egyptian protests. Nevertheless in a situation like this, vital for qualification, I must admit that I'm accepting a more open use of VAR, even to make teams aware about the assessment by referee. Well done calling to monitor for that, and I also liked the attitude of referee, you can hear him asking for a different camera (behind) and then thanking VAR at the end. A quite calm process in one of the most challenging moments. I agree at the end this wasn't handball, at least for what I can see, ball touches very likely the chest and not the arm. Still, the better angle (frontal camera) was missing and indeed this was big problem for the assessment (camera behind the net was too far away). But... the drama didn't end here, a few minutes after, Cape Verde scored. This kept Egypt still in KO stage, but the final decision about the previous goal by the officials stayed as very, very crucial.

Just checked the most important moments of these two games from yesterday and I must say many positive notes about CAF officiating, in an overall and quick analysis, very well done by committee if compared to previous editions.

    1. The decision on the field was handball, you can see on the replay that the referee points to the position of the alleged handball and then blowing his whistle. So good use of VAR, and I would probably have accepted an intervention just for an extra check at such a crucial moment even if the decision was goal

  4. Very positive impression by the young referee from Somalia in charge of crucial game Mauritania - Algeria. He didn't show to be afraid to be in the middle.

Don't make the VAR gesture, otherwise I will have to book you

Extremely good handling of a mass confrontation, with players then shaking hands.

    2. I agree about the very good impression but I don't like the procedure that leads to the YC for the reckless use of arm. The cards should be given immediately and not after looking after the hit player and
      talking to others.

    3. Cassius, I agree about this particular. It looks like referee made an assessment based on the seriousness of the injury, absolutely forbidden by observers here in Italy. Nevertheless, something small here in the context of the officiating.

I can accept YC for SPA due to the position of the foul and the ball possession still to be gained.

    2. For context, Mebiame warned Hakimi in 1H for a quite blatant kicking the ball away (dissent). I guess this is why the card came out. Although I don't believe it was a must for both the gesture itself and management purpose.
The Gabonese was overall quite good in a not-so challenging but quite dynamic game. I believe the 45' no-penalty call can be supported as well.

    3. Chefren I respectfully disagree with you. That's a clear simulation. Hakimi initiates a phantom contact my bargiing on his opponent and still goes throws himself to the ground.

    4. I believe this card was given due to repeated incidents of Morocco players going down easily. Maybe not simulation as such but it was tiring watching Morocco team always falling over at minimal contact

  11. Belgian FA disciplinary council has ordered the Super League match Genk - Anderlecht to be replayed.

Situation: Genk takes a PK that is saved by Anderlecht GK, but Genk scores the rebound. VAR tells the refere that Genk player who scored had encroached, thus encroachment from attacking team + penalty missed results in IFK for Anderlecht.

However, the footage shows that Anderlecht players also encroached in the PK situation, thus the correct restart should have been the PK being retaken. Genk have appealed for the match to be replayed and (provisionally) the Belgian FA have ruled in their favour.

Referee is Nathan Verboomen (UEFA Second), VAR is Jan Boterberg (non-FIFA). Video (1:00):

  16. Already two key SPA vs. DOGSO handling incidents for Beida, both correctly solved imo - Namibia defender only booked for handling a centred ball in an extremely promising counter-attack, and now the Angolan goalkeeper manditorily sent off for saving a shot with his hands outside the box in a 1-on-1. Neither situation appeared to cover either linesman in the best light however.

    1. In the moments of disarray in between the goalkeeper's handball and Beida's affirmative decision, an Angola player committed what seems to be a very heavy challenge on a Namibian which resulted in him being substituted off. No replay as yet.

    2. WOW it looks like a very eventful game for Beida Dahane.
Now a second YC to Namibia.

Here straight RC. Correct decision, I don't think that AR was able to cooperate with referee, too late in following the action. At the end I think he decided by himself, but it was clear situation. Also, a small clue of the other incident you mentioned, while referee was whistling, I think no more than a possible reckless use of arm here, with Angola player quite messy in his action (but not deliberate for me).

    5. Second YC: https://streamin.me/v/a40f859f
Mandatory YC indeed. But also in this case.. no reaction by AR!
I even more praise Beida for his attitude to take these decisions, here we have what CAF can improve, the cooperation by some assistant referees, clearly not at UEFA level.

      Delete
    6. Well, we don't how much input the ARs gave through the comm system.
But yes, they surely should raise the flag, at least to support the referee's decision.

      Delete
    7. Also not helpful, that this is not a fixed trio and they probably worked together for the first time.
Not sure, why Beida couldn't keep his assistants from the group stage.

      Offside call AR1 -- https://www.streambug.io/cv/65251a
      SPA vs. DOGSO -- https://www.streambug.io/cv/4f8be9
      2H disciplinary -- https://www.streambug.io/cv/3ef0ff

Overall it was a sovereign performance in a game which, KMIs aside, wasn't especially challenging for Beida.

      Delete
    9. Thanks!
At first, let me say further confirmations that AR1 was not at the required level. Incredible positioning in the offside call you reported and no reaction at all, you can see him not following the game. Then, the flag is maybe even correct, the player can look in extremly tight offside position, but it was rather a random guess by him, sorry to say!
Also, not to mention VAR purposes, this could have been a case of delayed flag, but then the movement of the attacker not in direction of the goal could justify, at least under this aspect, an early call, but still, better if he had waited. With this attitude, it was possible to have incidents in which VAR couldn't intervene!
Same regarding the following SPA - DOGSO incident, no reaction by him again! The incident is extremely interesting! I think RC would have never been questioned by VAR, one could say the pass was directed to teammate, but we can indeed give benefit of the doubt, because ball possession not sure. It is OK to only book player without further evidence, but surely he risked more than that. Again referee must be praised for such immediate decision he took.
Finally, about disciplinary in second half: I can accept no card in the first incident, rather low intensity and absolutely 0 fault, if you ask me, for the contact, while the player was already trying to kick ball, the opponent came into his path and not the opposite. The YC in the second incident is fully correct, nothing to add, while it seems indeed a YC is missing at the end in 90' for a possible step on foot.
Looks lilke a good performance by referee, who officiated "alone" (without assistant referees) this game and luckily it didn't turn into a more complicated affair thank also to good luck (no extremely challenging incidents close to sidelines...).
CAF can reflect on this game for sure.

  17. On-Field Review to disallow a goal for offside in Nigeria vs. Cameroon:
    https://www.streambug.io/cv/abad3e

Overall it was another good AFCON performance in this sonorous game by Redouane Jiyed, requiring less cautions (4 YCs given) than his R16 match two years ago :).

    Replies
    1. Again, excellent use of VAR!
The call should have been made by AR, expected at this level, of course the fact that this was a shot, the save by keeper and the other player in a more evident offside position, were all elements that raised the difficulty. Nevertheless, also the offside of the involved player is quite clear and AR should have assessed it properly, as said.
No problems as long as you have such good interventions from the technology.

  19. It might look like a no brainer or smth obvious, but I want to highlight a very good offside decision taken in min. 22' yesterday in Barcelona-Villareal. It is clear that the away team attacker does not want to play the ball because he knew he was in offside position. But at the same time he was interfering with an opponent by making an obvious action which clearly impacts on the ability of an opponent to play the ball, as in LoTG 11.2.2.4 I would say. He blocked the home team defender to intervene, the latter had to go around him before trying a desperate tackle to block the ball. The AR2 correctly raised the flag and the goal was cancelled, confirmed by VAR. Very instructive moment, especially for lower level (assistant) referees. It could have been easily missed on the pitch.
