I must agree that this was a very good piece of refereeing, even more with weak assistant referees at sides.
In his previous GS game he had needed VAR for a late penalty call in favor of Egypt:

Overall, you can say rather surprising choice, but I think second game was strong argument to find motivations. And it seems clear to me CF wanted to avoid all previous referees who had already officiated such big nations now in final. At least in case of controversy, this will remain only about the game.

DeleteWhat’s your opinion about his ARs, I mean isn’t a permanent team better than mixed team like what we saw so far in AFCON. Even in AFC when the main referee is change, duo AR often still remaining pairing. I think it’s only in CAF exist mixed team use at the highest football stage of the continent.

One could say that this revolutioner, but simply you can’t break the common sense with such random path. Why they can’t appoint Redouane Jiyed for the final? This is just rationale appointment and they all won’t be dissapointed.

DeleteOT: Tori Penso refereed Al-Hilal - Al-Nassr yesterday. Good to see, that Saudi-Arabia now not only accepts female referees (like in the CWC), but invites them for their top games. Not too long ago, that games from foreign leagues weren't broadcast, when the referee was a woman.

I mean, Saudi Arabia is inviting woman referees to get plaudits from Europeans and North Americans. They aren't actually doing it for gender equality. I mean, c'mon. Putting these women on these matches is a political ploy to paper over their treatment of women at home.

DeleteI support Jiyed to refuse his assignment. It was non-sense to choose young referee without extraordinary capabilities, extravaganza performance. This is not meritocracy and at the same time I don’t think Mauritanian have such power to influence this appointment, it just back to the committee rationale that not working at the moment I think.

ReplyDeleteSurprised to read some of the comments here. I find the appointment very unsurprising. The only name I would have expected ahead of him was Ghorbal; I assume CAF didn’t like the penalty he gave in the quarterfinal (an assessment I would agree with).

I agree with Smala. Beida has been very much deserving of this final. I agree he is young, but the fact is most of these promising refrees emerging from Africa are all young, so you can't keep waiting otherwise you lose them. Beida's performances in this Afcon have been brilliant. Ghorbal missed his chance nd already handled Nigeria vs Cote d'ivoire in GS.

I understand Jiyed's frustrations because he is a good referee and have a lot of experience, plus at 44, this was his last opportunity to handle the final. But his behaviour is unacceptable. He had to respect the committee and his fellow referees. I'm sure referees like Ghorbal, Tessema etc who will retire will have also wanted to ref the final.
ReplyDeleteBut appointing a referee to the finals entails alot now first you have to look at meritocracy, experience and other things which I think Jiyed had, well still the decision of CAF committee.

(conspiracy theory) It seems to me that we need to stop the practice of “awarding” the final match to a referee who ends his career. The level of corruption is increasing sharply. Nothing personal. The ideal age of a final judge is 35-40 years old.
ReplyDeleteIt’s different “awarding”, “just put some respect”, and “deserved” appointment. I mean no matter whatever your age, just logical reason to appoint more experienced referee on the final, even when he is young it’s okay as long as he is deserved. In this case, Beida appointment even one could say deserved enough, but IMO his performance not showing extraordinary that we should with acclamation agree that he is deserved based on his performance (if we comparing to reaction on this blog for Marciniak performance on the final of WC).

Ndala ruled out as DRC in semis, Ghorbal wrong penalty, Artan too young, Atcho poor in SEN-CIV, Tessema declined etc. I think the surprise is seeing the country Mauritania over anything else

The attacker close, and in contact, with keeper has been assessed as NOT punishable after OFR.
While one can understand the reasons of this choice (keeper could see the ball and he had to try a save on the other side than the offside player), I think this is rather a questionable decision because it was always said that an attacker, in this position and in contact with keeper, was enough to be considered as active. I could have understood more this call in case of a few space between players, but not in such positions.
I think this is an effect of new guidelines given by Rocchi about offside assessments, following a very clear mistkae made by VAR and referee in Sassuolo - Fiorentina (a player absolutely not punishable was punished). But this decision in Roma - Inter remains as controversial, because offside had been always called before in such situations. We will hear and know more in a week when VAR clip will be very likely selected for publication.
Also, about Roma, let me add, once Mourinho has been fired, is a totally different team, by far easier to officiate.
Daniele De Rossi, new coach, made a very honest analysis about the incident, not blaming the referee, the team is playing well and they are achieveing some good results. That's a very good reality after all the storm.

Delete@Elliot about the "wrong OFR", here in Italy all the possible offside positions before a goal scored, if missed and not assessed by AR on the pitch, are always analyzed by VAR and sent to referee via OFR. Indeed it is a very particular use of the technology that I don't see in other countries. So in this case, even if VAR agreed with original decision, no punishable offside, he had to call referee to OFR to show the video, according to guidelines.

DeleteJust to add something about the choice for AFCON final referee choice. There are credible speculations that Redouane Jiyed with his age and experience may have been originally planned for the final. But something that happened during the tournament might have caused CAF to throw that plan away.
ReplyDeleteAfter Morocco were surprisingly eliminated by South Africa in the R16, the Moroccan FA made accusations against the CAF chairman (a South African) of influencing decisions in favour of South Africa with his presence in every SA match (a baseless and silly claim). The Moroccan FA also threatened to pull out of CAF or take any action in protest against CAF.
I guess this is what angered CAF and they decided to replace the Moroccan ref with Dahane (who was not planned at all) for the final, as CAF can't be seen to reward a referee from an FA that accuses them of bias and corruption with the honnor of the final. This made the Moroccan ref angry and refused to do the 3rd place.
Like I said, they are speculations, but you could sense the facts in them.
Don’t know any facts, but this makes perfect sense. If Morocco have been so vocal in publicly accusing CAF, they would not give Morocco ref the final (sad but true). Politics always plays a big role behind the scenes.

ReplyDeleteBeida managed, if slightly chaotically, the angry confrontation involving Osimhen okay. But the player he really needs to assert his authority over is Fofana - in almost every duel, the Ivorian is trying to challenge the referee’s authority by feigning being fouled, appealing for everything. He is undermining the young Mauritanian’s control over the match a fair amount.

DeleteThis dive by the corner flag at 36’ is a perfect case in point. It’s a clear attempt to fool the referee and make him look like an idiot. Beida makes no reaction and signals the right decision, goalkick. But the no reaction says more ‘no foul was committed’ than ‘I know you were trying to cheat me and I saw through it!’. As a consequence, the Nigerian player in question angrily shouts back at his opponent. As this happens 5, 10 times over a match, it begins to erode your match control. Just an advice more than a real criticism!

DeleteAbout Karboubi, I’m not saying that Adel/Jiyed/Artan would definitely have seen it. But this is the second incident in the tournament where a politically-appointed fourth official has had a full blackout in an important scene which was CLEARLY in their vicinity. Especially with progressively worse behaviour of benches in the last ≈ten years, this role is an important one in the refs crew and should NOT be used as a way to get token female officials on the big games. The difference, for one example, between what Yamashita offered Siebert in the WC and Iida in the Asian semifinal, is actually enough to swing match control one way or another.
