  1. Does anyone know how olympics appointments will work? Is it possible that men referee women’s games and vice versa?

    1. My guess is YES - if levels of competition are deemed to be fair then the Women's competition is higher, as this is full national sides, the men's being U23 plus some over aged players

    2. Well, I hope not, as to me it wouldn't send such good signals about women's football if their highest level is comparable to U23 for men. Nothing would surprise me with FIFA and their virtue signalling though...

    3. lets check the facts first:

      - there are 12 teams in three groups. so there will be 18 group stage matches

      - fifa has appointed 9 female referees. many match-officials come from participating-countries. yamashita, alves and penso being the most prominent ones. and assistants from australia, sambia and colombia

      - it is very likely that usa, brazil and japan will make it to knockout stage, so those three referees would drop out - and maybe other referees will be injured, ill or not perform as expected, so fifa would have to send them home, too

concluding from the three points mentioned above, i see no way how the female tournament should be run only with women...

    4. adding to that: penso would only be able to referee groups a and c. yamashita and alves only groups a and b...group a has mostly "easy" matches...group b with usa, germany and australia and group c with spain, japan and brazil are both super competitive...so you will need these three for the big matches in group stage, however they can only do one of these matches...not so sure if fifa will stick to their continental appointments. imagine karboubi, calderas or yo-jeong in clashes like usa-germany, spain-brazil, etc...fifa wont risk that i am very sure

  3. Don't know why, when one day is missing to tomorrow's games, VAR crews are not still released by UEFA, unless the Scottish one in Bodø.

  8. Celje-Slovan
    R: D.England, VAR: J.Gillet
    Poor start
Pre match - Ref don't use UEFA Match official badge, but FIFA Referee
4' - IMO wrong YC to Slo GK, reckless kick to head, but also DOGSO, so RC should be given. Poor procedure, whistled after like 10secs, looked like there was some help from AR/4O, but R had best view from the team
29' - RC for SFP for Slo 88 after OFR (original YC given), borderline challenge for me, wrong intervention IMO, also correct YC for dissent for Slo 7
40' Correct disallowed goal for offside despite AR2 poor positioning
42' Clear push not whistled on Slo 7, commited by Cel 43
45' Good play on in Slo penalty area
45+2' missed YC for illegal use of arms for Slo 28, referee not even call foul, only stopped play after few secs, for head injury and YC for dissent for Slo 21, absoulutly unacceptable behavior from Slo players after every call

    1. Second half:
56' Good YC for Cel 47, for recklles late challenge
65' Wrong offside ofence, player which was in offside position did not played the ball, so corner kick should had been awarded
68' Wrong goal kick, ball was touched by the Slo player, another corner kick not awarded for Celje
73' Goal disallowed for offside, IMO too fast check how tight situation was
74' Crystal clear YC for Cel 23, for SPA
76' Penalty appeal for potential handball in Cel penalty area, not clear video in broadcast, also strong public warming for Slo 7 (allready on YC, for dissent)
80' last minute Slo substitution canceled, OK managment IMO
83' Penalty appeal for potential handball in Slo penalty area, great no call by England, immidiate strong NO gesture and corner kick awarded
85'+ Good managment in multple occasions, to deny potential Slo delaying restart f.ex. when Slo 7 was subbed off, ask new C Slo 33 to come closer to Slo 7, to give him armband

    2. Indeed, it seems as England didn't have the UEFA badge to wear, differently from his assistant referees, very poor to be watched.

    4. Very challenging game for England.
I think he was definitely better in second half.
About the 4' incident, I think that the keeper was able to kick ball in a way so the argument of DOGSO might be questionable, but it could have been easily assessed as serious foul play, because attacker was kicked in the head and keeper acted with a total disregard of the safety of opponent.
To me, more RC for SFP than for DOGSO. YC makes it a very questionable decision regarding the possible VAR intervention or not, but for me most VAR would have intervened for the seriousness of the action.
In 29' I think that the detail used by VAR was the point of contact in the picture posted above, but this was only the final moment of a challenge that one could see indeed as reckless and nothing more. Here to me it's a classic situation where it's 100% impossible to find any consistency, you will never expect all VARs making this reasoning. Can be punished by red card, but it's rather harsh, once you see the tackle in the entire action. This issue with VAR can't be solved because with a possible RC for SFP, all referees will have different readings.
I think also not the best body language by England after OFR, too slow process of changing YC to RC, and initially it looked like he didn't want to do that.
45' is a correct assessment, in 65' I don't think that the offfside flag is 100% wrong, one could argue the player in offside didn't leave space to opponent to try to play ball and he impeded him by just his presence, nevertheless a sophisticated and not expected decision.
73' is offside, the color of the grass helps us in having confirmation, even if tight, so I think OK that VAR confirmed it quickly.
In 76' it's impossible to say, indeed, replay doesn't show any evidence. One must back officials.
80': the substitution was cancelled in the very last moment! one step more and it would have been a technical mistake... but still OK indeed.
83' should be a correct decision indeed, even if we don't have the correct angle to watch.
