Sandro Schärer to referee the 2024 UEFA Super Cup

The Swiss official will take charge of the match between Real Madrid and Atalanta in Warsaw.

The UEFA Referees Committee has appointed Sandro Schärer (Switzerland) to referee the 2024 UEFA Super Cup match between Real Madrid CF and Atalanta BC, which will take place on Wednesday 14 August at the National Stadium in Warsaw, Poland (kick-off 21:00 local time).

The 36-year-old has been an international referee since 2015 and has officiated 86 UEFA matches in his career to date, regularly taking charge of UEFA club competition and international matches.

He was selected as a referee for UEFA EURO 2024, where he was appointed for two group stage matches. He also refereed a knockout match in each of the UEFA Europa League and UEFA Europa Conference League last season.

Schärer leads an experienced refereeing team for the UEFA Super Cup, with six of the seven members having been part of UEFA EURO 2024. He will be assisted by fellow Swiss officials Stéphane De Almeida and Jonas Erni, while Mykola Balakin (Ukraine) will act as fourth official.

Bastian Dankert (Germany) is the VAR and he will be assisted by Fedayi San (Switzerland) and Christian Dingert (Germany).

  1. In my opinion an expected nomination as Sandro Schärer is one of the most promising elite referees who was set back primarily due to injury. And I also expected some kind of compensation for the treatment of his assistant Stéphane De Almeida at the European Championships.

    1. Fully agree, expected appointment and a "classic one" for a Super Cup, with a rather promising referee but not a very top one. Like it was one year ago with Letexier.
Now the other Swiss assistant referee, Bekim Zogaj, is out. But maybe there are different reasons.

    2. He retired from refereeing to become member of the swiss refereeing commission, as reported here: https://www.kosovapress.com/it/zogaj-ndeshjet-e-euro-2024-ishin-te-fundit-per-mua-si-gjyqtar

  2. Why not Meler for Supercup after the very good Euro?

    1. Meler is gonna get something bigger than Supercup next year, IMO

    2. In this case we can say good for committee that they had several options. Meler can indeed be the referee for next year, the answer to your question can be that the Swiss had been already followed before by committee and so he arrived at this point of career with more experience than the Turkish, to get the Super Cup. But even before next year's Super Cup, Meler could be surely candidate at least for Conference League final if he continues in this way.

  3. VAR referee Bastian Dankert, how can he be appointed? After his mistake in the Netherlands-England match, he was the one who awarded the penalty kick and forced felix zwayer to return to VAR. This referee should be blacklisted.

    1. It was clearly correct decision. VAR should be praised for it and not "blacklisted".

  4. Expected appointment for Sharer as one of the most promising referee for the future, and in some case deserved, like for example would have been Meler, Nyberg and Siebert. But I'm wondering which plan has committee for Oliver; he is fully trusted, always appointed, even for high level and sonorous match but never for a final one. 2014 Super Cup should have been his final to me.

  7. In my opinion, the reason why Meler was not appointed for this match is the retirement of the AR1 and the poor performance of the AR2 in Euro2024.

  8. With Iain Blair as UEFA delegate, curious to see that UEFA still doesn't report any observer appointed for today's game in Warsaw.

    1. Well we all know who the real observer will be anyway, so is there really any point :D

  9. Easy game to handle, all cards were justified.

Missed clear booking for Lookman, dangerous foul on Carvajal that could have escalated in big fight.

    Luckily,players were here to intervene.

  10. Good performance by Schärer tonight IMO. Solid disciplinary in 1H that asserted his control of the game, trusted by the players, focused appearance. He can be satisfied with how he handled the most sonorous UEFA game of his career until now.

  11. Great performance by Schärer in today's match. It is worth remembering that there had not been a Swiss referee in continental finals for 14 years when Busacca officiated the Super Cup between Inter Milan and Atlético de Madrid. Coincidentally, Schärer refereed another team from Madrid, as well as another Italian team in blue and black.

    1. This isn't a Continental Final.
It's nothing more than a bonafide friendly to cap off the summer preparations for the two teams involved. Sure, there's a trophy to be won. But so do other pre-season friendlies.

  12. Not a difficult game to handle for the Swiss referee, but surely he must be praised for the accuracy of disciplinary control, indeed he could have easily switched in a more lenient approach but he didn't do that.
Just to point out, this approach with the early yellow card to Atalanta player was not liked by Italian commentators, talking about a referee who was exaggerated and wanted to be almost a protagonist in such a game. Once again, you can understand how much hard is to officiate top games, when common ideas about how to referee are such ones.
