  1. I'm looking forward to Orsato's performance this afternoon. His style should actually suit both teams - but depending on the score, it can also get restless and emotional. I think the judgement of fouls will be decisive today - I wish him the best of luck! If he's not in charge of the final, who will be? Vincic, Marciniak? Who will the committee decide in favour of?

    1. I think Zwayer will get 1 of the remaining matchs.
Turpin and Oliver are also possible candidates for the semifinals and the final.
Orsato is the in the pole position for the final (for now)
I don't think Marciniak will get the final.

    2. It is very hard to imagine Vincic for the final without any other play-off game before, but with Rosetti nobody knows...

  2. Why has Orsato been allowed to referee a game involving one of Italy's neighbours same as Oliver last night. Both ties should have had Eastern European referees.

    1. And who is Zwayer refereeing then? No Polish, Danish,Tsjech, austrian, Swiss, French, Belgian, Luxemburg and Dutch teams????????? Doesn,t make any sence what you just said!

    1. If that had been in Serie A that would have been a penalty

    2. IMO no hard decision. Was very obvious - normal tackling, no foul at all.

    3. contact with the player not the ball isa foul in the laws of the game, so it had to be a penalty

    1. Do you think that UEFA is CONMEBOL?
For all the things CONMEBOL does wrong in regard to refereeing. They're absolutely spot on when they release the VAR audios the day after a match. Even if it means them admitting that one of their referees was wrong.

You will never ever ever ever get this from UEFA. There is absolutely no real referee transparency or accountability in Ceferin's and Rossetti's dictatorship. If you're lucky, it'll be included in a UEFA RAP long after the incident has been forgotten.

    1. IMO supportable as we have a SPA situation. But definitely weak cooperation by AR2 leading to a clear handball being missed. Would have been a great position for ENG.

  7. Clear handball missed from Orsato, defender virtually saved it. Good opening YC for Schar however

You leap to hyperbole vert quickly

    3. Help me out here, I’m utterly confused!
Is this the same bigJ who persistently and strongly defended both English referees yesterday, who repeatedly posted that it’s all about angles, that referees don’t have the benefit of replays, who doubted the refereeing knowledge of many readers, blaming them of easily judging from an armchair?
Is this the same bigJ who now criticizes Orsato for every mistake and doesn’t cut him any slack? Who doesn’t use the same arguments he used yesterday? Smells like some clear form of bias to be honest.
On top of that, in the penalty area incident early on the defender DID play the ball, so maybe you used the wrong angle?

      Delete
    4. bigJ just invalidated anything and everything that he's posted or will post. Just like Taylor, he's inconsistent at best. ; D

  9. He waved it away, was not advantage. When you see the replay Orsato has already turned away. He didnt see it

  10. Could only be given by AR2 over comms. Would not expect a flag involvement

  11. Not very often you criticize the trail AR but Orsato needed the help and AR2 had the angle to see it.

  12. He was lucky the ball still got to an england player so the players probably thought he was giving advantage. Otherwise a solid perfomance by Orsato imo. Not a hard game tho.

    ReplyDelete
  13. Solid first half, game can be managed normally, no special incidents. One controversial decision was the handball that was not given, but otherwise everything was ok (but also within the bounds of what was expected).

  14. It is a typical England game in that we don't create too many problems for teams, hence less challenging

  15. First- I am so long part of this blog as commentator, but I have never seen so negative campagin against the referees like on this championship. This blog is dedicated tho ous that love the refereeing and like to learn somsthing new.
Second- Almost excellent performance by Orsato, two excellent no penalty calls. One handall missed, but I clearly saw that he showed advatage signal in that moment,so satisfying no call in that moment. Situation a out flag up,he see it, but,he again gave advantage, what I personally like. Just continiue in this way.

    2. I don't know this blog for very long and find it very informative. Is there a general forum here for general questions & rules regarding refereeing or are there always just these individual match-related pages? If there was a general forum, you could discuss and debate a lot of general things, that would help.

    3. I thought anyone could write in this blog.
If you are only allowed to criticize If you at last been a FiFA referee you should write that in Capital Letters.

    4. There is already a place when nobody cares about referees’ mistakes but is only interested at politics. It’s the UEFA. And as long as there will be freedom of speech, everyone will be entitled to criticise the management and the performances by any referee.

  16. Dear bigJ,
Would you mind stopping to post one and the same item under every post here that is not in line with your point of view?
Yes, we know, you are the one and only on this blog who ever hat a whistle in his hand and mouth, while everybody else here is just sitting on his couch writing about things he knows nothing about.
We praise you for your wisdom, and - to be honest - we recognized your competence just after the first posting you made here every other day. So please you do not repeat yourself ten times commenting on every particular game.
    Thank you.

    1. Agreed. On Swiss TV feed this was already apparent at 70 minutes.

      on separate topic:
When this round is finished, it would be good for someone like Chefren to explain which missed-fouls are forgiven and why they do not block the referee from further matches (e.g. obvious handball in this game, seen real-time by even me, and commented in writing by Swiss TV ) and how those by others sent them home (e.g. Makellie and Kovacs). And this for all games. Not for others to criticize, but a good synthesis of what was observed on this blog and what general opinion prevails. Thank you.

  25. I almost feel bad for Orsato that there is extra time. It's clear that he just cannot keep up.

Orsato is a good referee of course. But honestly, there should be a referee who can follow the game...

    ReplyDelete
  26. This is not good from Orsato - lazy refereeing. Schar should have been sent off for that last tackle and he should be speeding up the free kicks, but he doesn’t want the ball in play anyway because he can’t keep up

  27. Was never a YC offence, was a careless trip. Would have been a huge over reaction

  28. Orsato survives. Nothing of consequence. Did OK. Just wish after his previous performance they had sent him straight to final, not sure what tonight does for his chances

  29. Very boring game, Orsato with an expected level performance. Nothing changed after today, if committee wants to appoint him in final, now they can do that. We will see.

  30. Guys,we can like or not, but, both performances by Orsato was outstanding. Again,he reserve Berlin at Sunday 14th. Only dobut is would UEFA RefCom would appoint him like FIFA RefCom Tori Penso at last WC:).

    ReplyDelete
  31. He was not outstanding tonight. There were wrong decisions and signs of slowing game down to ensure he had rest periods.
However, no-one will be talking about his performance so he does still have a route to the final

    ReplyDelete
  32. A very good performance from Orsato!
The only question i have, is about the throw-in!
If the player is some meters advanced (from the point whene the ball goes out) but the player make a back pass (with his hand), why the referee should order a retake???

    ReplyDelete
  33. Fair, No, good game from Orsato. I Would be very suprised if he get the final, But there is a small posability though.

  34. Orsato will get the Final ,It is the end of his career and Rosetti will give it to him.

  35. For all of you whining about Orsato not running. I'll share this gem that was bestowed upon me by a long-time referee mentor and close friend.

"I'm not here to run. I'm here to enforce the rules."

    Take it as you will.

    ReplyDelete
  36. Which is fine if you get everything right and proximity is not relevant. To me there are times where you need to be close enough to "sell" decisions
One fk Orsato gave from 35 yards helped out by his 4th Official (fk on halfway, Orsato waa in middle of pitch)

    ReplyDelete
  37. With a slight delay, I think it's fair to say this was an expected level performance by Orsato in a rather easy game which never presented many challenges, but was still well-controlled to the end, with some notable issues I'll try to address later.

Orsato's line in foul detection was good and consistent for the most part of this match, with a number of well-assessed play on calls usual for his style (e.g. 22', 97'), but also with a visible tendency towards some easy calls in the ending stages of the match. This, coupled with the teams' style of play, never led the game into becoming a dynamic and/or pleasing show. It has to be said that this choice of style, or a change in Orsato's usual style, probably came as a result of his growing fatigue, clearly visible after two consecutive ETs during his last two matches, and his probable desire to slow the game down a bit in order to preserve some energy. Of course, it has now become a common notion of these analyses to criticise Orsato's level of fitness and the lack of movement on the FoP as the game progresses, however it's fair to say this is an area of improvement in which it is impossible to imagine any actual improvement, as this was probably Orsato's penultimate game in a long and distinguished career. To be honest, as long as he's having no major issues in keeping control and taking correct decisions in most of the situations, I don't consider it a major problem (with respect to all who disagree). Having said that, it's fair to say Orsato's level of control over the game and players, as well as his rather unique style of interaction, are hard to match, and he used them again in this game. Of course, it can be said he again chose to not caution for protesting, but as I said after his previous game, he doesn't actually need cards to preserve control and maintain his authority; it can even be said that such a style would actually hinder his natural strengths. The aforementioned situation in 22', with a possible foul on Embolo rightly not given, can be an example for this: after protesting and receiving a small warning, Embolo commits a careless retaliatory foul and instantly receives a very strong and clear public warning, after which I observed no problems in his behaviour for the rest of the match, although he was clearly nervous in his way of playing, but contained his emotions enough to be deemed acceptable.

Disciplinary wise, Orsato issued 3 cautions, one of which was soft and probably wrong, although I admit it fooled me as well in real time (67', ENG9, reckless use of arm: it's difficult to say there actually was a reckless contact with the elbow). The rest were correct for my taste: 32' (SUI22, SPA) and 85' (SUI3, tactical holding). Three more cautions were possible, but I think he rejected all of them correctly or at least supportably: 49' (ENG2, contact with the opponent's foot was more of a careless nature IMO), 98' (SUI13, with a careless kick to Kane's heel, not more) and 100' (SUI22, with a careless foul in a not clear enough SPA-like scenario to earn a SYC to the player, IMO).

Regarding PAI's, I think Orsato correctly rejected three potential penalties: 16' (I don't consider this leg collision to be significant enough for a foul on Kane to be called), 69' (no significant contact on the SUI player) and 120+1' (a collision of a normal "footballing" nature, nothing to cause Toney to fall like he bounced off a rock).

    1. The most visible and clear mistake of the match occurred in 33', with Orsato missing a clear handball by a SUI player close to their PA. The incident occurred behind his back, with him turning away prematurely in order to anticipate a cross, and partly because of missing cooperation with AR2, who had a chance of seeing and reporting it, but failed to do so. It is highlighted as a clear miss and area for improvement.

Both ARs performed on an overall good level, with especially AR1 taking some nice onside decisions (60', 75'), while also facing a very tight possible offside in 21', where he can be supported for leaving his flag down in such a situation. Although he showed signs of weak cooperation in 33', it is fair to note that AR2 presented some valuable input in 65', resulting in Orsato changing his initially wrong CK decision to goal kick.

All things considered, I think it's fair to give an overall assessment of a positive, expected level performance of the referee team in this match.
