DeleteI'm happy to see new names like as Saggi and Obrenovic in CL; UEFA really needs to make a reliable new generation of top level and the new course started yesterday is confirmed today too. Nyberg is flying at the highest level and it seems fully deserved; Not so good for Makkelie and Siebert, they seem a medium/low profiles games and I'm curious to know if it is a normal turnover or a low consideration
ReplyDeleteIs it possible that with a top appointment like Manchester City vs Inter, Nyberg could have a chance of refereeing a European final this season? For example, the Europa League or the Conference League? Or perhaps the Champions League itself?
DeleteEven without Manchester City - Inter, the Swedish referee was already a candidate this season for both Europa and Conference League finals, still to wait for Champions League (my opinion).

ReplyDeleteThe Norwegian could have been more expected than the Spanish, following the assignments, we saw his path this summer and the very challenging games he had. For me, he would need by far more experience before getting a CL appointment, but now it's clear that committee has different ideas. Enough to focus on a referee and to give him some games as preparation, and the debut is ready. Of course better management than Martinez Munuera, but still, if we compare today's choices with the past, we must say that everything has changed. All referees on paper can get Champions League without too many efforts, a man like Collina, honestly, would have never allowed that, but it's Rosetti philosophy.
Also, the names of the teams play definitely a big role, having observed how the UEFA committee works for years and years, I can be sure that for them, some CL games.... are not CL games :) If you understand what I mean. That's clear. The least sonorous clashes with rather medium - small cubs, are treated in a very different way.
The very good moment of Nyberg continues, I think we can say that togetherwith Schaerer and Letexier, at moment they are the referees more in focus by committee. The French got the big call with EURO final, Schaerer was assigned to Super Cup, now one should think, as I answered above, that also the Swedish referee is waiting for either Conference or Europa League final, we will see.
Coming to Makkelie, an interesting appointment to start the new season, Rocchi is particular observer, I wrote that before the game Galatasaray - Young Boys with Eskas, sometimes the Italian goes to observe relatively young and promising referees, but in other cases we saw him with experienced Elite officials, and that's the case. There are only a few observers with this particular treatment.
Talking about the game, both the Scottish and the Slovakian sides can be very rough indeed, and one can expect a challenging game in terms of intensity (maybe not spectacular, but dirty football..). For this reason, a choice like the Dutch could be explained.
Regular assignments for Siebert and Peljto, but the German could have got something better: for sure Girona will is considered by committee like the other teams that got referees at thair debut, but here you have PSG on the other side, raising the level of the assignment (and we all know how they can be in trouble in CL games...).
Finally, about Obrenovic, already made his debut in CL on past season, committee continues with the trust, but this time he must convince. A regular performance is expected, definitely too many mistakes in recent times.
I think that after the controversies in the Denmark vs. Switzerland match for the Nations League, the committee is not putting Siebert as much in the spotlight for the big games in the first rounds of the UCL. Who knows, with a good performance in PSG vs. Girona, Siebert will be nominated for more demanding matches.

DeleteLet's also remember that these appointments (maybe unless Juventus - PSV and Brest - Sturm Graz) were made before the Nations League games, and in particular Denmark - Switzerland, played on 5 September (observers appeared before that date).
DeleteSo in case they should have changed appointment, but for me a single incident even if very controversial can be never enough to make such a choice. It's a standard assignment for the German, not a big game, PSG win is expected, but indeed with PSG, the "particular" team, as we know them, so need a more experienced referee than others.

ReplyDeleteJohn Brooks did his first game of the season last saturday and Andy Madley is doing his first this weekend. Could explain why Kavanagh has had so many Uefa games since Brooks and Madley have been injured/unavaliable until now.

ReplyDeleteShould be mentioned that the first of these yellows was pretty close to SFP for tackle from behind. Imo YC is still the best decision. Makkelie has handled this game in an unobstrusive and strict way - I think that will be the theme of UEFA refereeing this season. Good 1H by the Dutch ref.

Completely agree on the 14' wrong handball. It's a very natural position! What do they expect, for them to chop their arms off? There seems to be a tendancy to punish many, many more handballs when not in the penalty area and I don't get why. It's a poor call when he's in a very good position

I get what you mean, but nowadays for Uefa these are clear penalties. Attacker plays ball, defender is (a fraction) late and hits foot: makes penalty. I’m not sure but I think I even remember several comparable RAP examples which stated intervention is required when no penalty awarded.

That's an interesting discussion. These penalties are indeed today seen as very clear ones and the VAR intervention is required in case they are missed.
DeleteMy question is: how much the argument of "soft contact" in this case can be more important than the full incident? I mean, defender goes for the ball and he is convinced to play it, then attacker arrives before and he is hit. To me, you have either to hate or to like (or, at least, accept) this kind of penalty. I can't see room for a middle way in today football, because who arrives before on the ball is always rewarded.
In such cases, personally, I always consider whether the attacker still has a chance to score or not. If the attacker has already lost the ball, I tend to "hate" such penalties, if it is a very promising attack, I "like" it. Very often, the attacker just touches the ball once without any opportunity to control the ball or score, in such cases, I would like to see no penalty for soft/late contact. But I'm not sure if referees consider this.

It looks like a very calm evening for CL referees if compared to yesterday. Not that much to discuss, I tried to watch a bit from all the games, if I'm not wrong there wasn't any VAR intervention.

Penalties whistled by Makkelie, Saggi and Peljto all OK.
The debut of Norwegian referee was good, I must say.
Good calls in the early minutes, penalty (alertness to be praised because he could be still mentally not in the game, but he was) and then a few later free kick and YC for SPA The rest, was not a difficult task.
Nyberg with an expected level performance, or a little above that.
ReplyDeleteFull Control, great allertness, very quickly present as soon as any tension could have started. Some great no calls (e.g. 62´). One can really praise him for the game it happened to be, good flow and calm atmosphere.
On the negative(?) he could have shown a YC at some point but decided not to. For me 74´ YC SPA would have been mandatory. With the rest I can agree, allthough it is surely not everybodys style to solve it like that.

ReplyDeleteI didnt like Meler´s performance.
Pretty much nitpicking with fouls, allthough the game wasnt really heated. Both opening YCs rather wrong, but for sure not mandatory or a good way to open cards. About the penalty I would say Meler is not that much to blame, it looked rather blatant at first look. I can agree with the VAR intervention, eventhough maybe not correct by book.
If you wanna find something positive, I really liked him not being afraid to take decisions. Also some important ones against the big homeside Real.
Last but not least I gotta say AR2 gotta improve very fast. He was 4 times wrong, twice significantly. I havent seen Martinez Munueras game, but both AR2 were probably at the same level.
I had a gut feeling he often made decisions based upon his feelings / mobbing of RMA bench rather than what he actually saw.

In my opinion a rather regular performance by Peljto, based on the clips. Supportable about the penalty in the last minutes of the game, but I think VAR wouldn't have called in case of play on. Surely no penalties for me in 72' and 67', one must discuss about 33'. Also about 50', but it's impossible without replays.
About 33', to me, there is certain movement with leg by defender, but at same time, you can't say how much attacker used it instead of trying to continue the attack. Yes, the defender in reality obstrected him, but personally I don't have the feeling of a 100% clear foul, so to me VAR was right in supporting and this game stayed to referee's discretion about the crucial incidents, exactly how the VAR protocol wants. Not that much to say about the rest, it looked a not challenging under disciplinary point of view.

OK, while I think you can support the Slovenian regarding the crucial incidents (no foul before the goal, OK to play on following penalty area incidents), he definitely allowed too much for my taste. Very clear situations in which yellow card was expected. We can surely say that when he gave that first warning for a blatant reckless action, he was aware he shouldn't have allowed more, but then some quite clear SPA scenarios followed, and as you said, most of them involving the same player swho was very lucky to escape from sanctions. Foul detection was not perfect for this reason. Not a poor game, maybe bvetter than some previous displays of the Slovenian, but still some important point for improvement, because in my opinion you can't handle more heated games in this way, without cards for a so long time and in evident situations.
Last but not least, the missed advantage in 46' could be considered as very serious mistake by committee, maybe even more than a possible missed foul.. because Obrenovic had right in front of him the teammate getting ball after the previous foul against his team, and in a very favorable position. Missing in the read of the game, too much focused on the whistle to be done. This is what creates nowadays the most evident mistakes in modern refereeing, I would say, or at least dangerous situations. People now makes big discussions about a missed advantage, like a missed penalty or red card. He should improve on that as well.
I’m glad that Nyberg had a good game. He is still very inexperienced with Italian teams, isn’t he. The Swede can stand his ground effortlessly in (flow-based) games between two European giants, with his presence and personality.
ReplyDeleteOn the other hand, I always thought he isn’t on his best in rougher games (e.g. Conference League), thus it will be interesting to follow his path, as he’s normally in the mix for the Conference League final 2025. Nyberg is more a managing ref than a pure decision maker. Contrary to Peljto and Meler.
I didn’t watch Makkelie, but looking at the summary, it is easy to understand why Makkelie was tested in exactly the game in Scotland (with Rocchi). Not a random choice by Rosetti. It was a game between two teams that (especially in the first half) play opportunistic- and attacking football, which means that there is a lot to assess for the referee. These type of games give the Refcom a good impression of the form a referee has. This isn’t always the case in UCL (many calm snoozefests last season tbh, due to the team tactics).
I predict we will also see Taylor and Zwayer tested with sth similar in MD2.
Just to lighten the mood a bit, maybe Nyberg was a little upset that Halaand and Lautaro didn't score goals lol.
DeleteJoking aside, it was a well-controlled and administrative game with only one yellow card given to Ruben Dias. And I believe that Nyberg is the favorite in both the Conference League and Europa League finals (my opinion).
Did anyone watch PSG vs. Girona? From the point of view of a referee it seems like a good sign that nothing has to be said about Siebert's performance ...
