Two years ago, the following referees were appointed to U21 play-offs
ReplyDelete1L
Goga Kikacheishvili
Allard Lindhout
Gergő Bogár
Dario Bel
2L
Rohit Saggi
Sebastian Gishamer
Morten Krogh Hansen
Nathan Verboomen
Krogh and Lindhout were selected for the final tournament afterwards. While the Dane handled the semi-final, we all remember what a nightmare the tournament was for the Dutch.
Let's see what the referees that handled the play-offs in 2022 achieved afterwards:
Goga Kikacheishvili

2 UCL Q

Gergő Bogár and Nathan Verboomen most likely failed this season's UEFA tests (their last UEFA games were in August).
Given that club competitions are of biggest importance for UEFA, we could try to rank the referees according to their appearances in UCL, UEL and UECL.
Krogh 1-5-3 (+ U21 EURO SF, + U17WC R16)
Saggi 1-4-2
Lindhout 1-3-2 (+ U21 EURO GS)
Gishamer 0-2-3
Bel 0-0-4
Bogár 0-0-2
Kikacheishvili 0-0-2
Verboomen 0-0-1
The upper four referees were promoted to the first category while the bottom four are still in the second category.
After the issues at 2023 Under 21 I expected these games to be played with VAR, it seem as UEFA has different ideas. Normal assignments like the qualifiers. OK, national teams involved must then accept mistakes, even if crucial and direct ones, like an offside goal that could decide a qualification. Of course we wish that this will not happen, but modern football has shown to be very complex to officiate without technology (at least for the extremely difficult decisions to be taken on the pitch).
ReplyDeleteInteresting that one of the three appointed referees comes from a country that has officially refused VAR and they don't use it.
In my opinion for both referees and assistant referees at very top level in domestic countries, it's always difficult to switch from the two kinds of officiating, with and without VAR.
