  1. Does anyone know what Countries have not had any referees in the group stages

    1. I don't understand why some federations make meaningless lists of referees. For example, for the whole year only 2 matches in the July qualification with 4 referees available.

      Delete
    2. If you mean ever, then excluding Luxembourg and Alain Hamer on past years, now with Armenia joining the "party", we have only San Marino, Andorra and Gibraltar without any referee in group stage and I think this achievement will be hard for all three mentioned countries. To add, as always, Liechtenstein, they don't have FIFA listed officials so no chances for them.

  2. Farewell match for Vad; focus on Delajod and Gishamer under important observers. I guess that for Kolaric and Krigstad is a debut

  3. So, no Elite referees as I was predicting. The committee keeps same line for Conference League even without Europa League and Champions League. Among others, very good game for Xhaja. Beaton with an important one as well ad it seems that the reputation of the Scottish has changed in positive in recent times (just my feeling). Farewell game after 17 years as FIFA referee for Istvan Vad, while Berka doesn't get a good one after Rosetti observation.
Important observer for Al-Emara, and a look by Atkinson at Alberola Rojas, the yopung promising Spanish making his debut.
Debuts for Kolaric and Kringstad as well, while Hennessy gets his first Conference League GS after an isolated debut in Europa League GS three years ago (3 December 2020, after hat nothing followed).
For Lukas Fähndrich it will be second Conference League GS appearance afer the first one, one year ago.
Important observer for Gishamer as well.

  5. OT: Match Porto Mydtjiland was last for North Macedonian referee Aleksandar Stavrev. One of best referees that came from Ex-Yu countires. Going to retire while held the record of most games ever officiated in UEL(39). All the best Aleksandar!

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. Really the record? I would have assumed Ivan Bebek to have officiated more games in this competition than Aleksandar Stavrev.

      Delete
    2. Ivan Bebek has indeed more matches, 46. I didn't know that it was last Stavrev game, I also asked, but given the age it was very likely. Quite rare if not impossible that another referee from his country will have such a career in future.

      Delete
    3. Yes Guys, Ivan have 46 matches, but I spoke about Uefa Europa League, not about Uefa Cup And EL jonitly. So, Aleksandar Stavrev have the record officiated 39 games in EL, while Bebek officiate 35. Jontily, Bebek have 46(11 Uefa Cup matches).

    6. In France people consider it as a very big miss by Letexier, comparing it with his excellent RC in OM - PSG, for which he came on TV to explain more about the player integrity.
Could have understood YC (as SYC) but no card at all is simply insane and unfortunate (but still I am only a rugby ref passionate about football refereeing)

      Delete
  10. Agree with all of you about Letexier. Incredible mistake as he had all time in the world to issue yellow card. Crucial mistake as this yellow card would be second yellow . Imagine if that was open game this would affect result directly . Brisard in VAR can not be blamed as this is not 100% red but I am sure if Letexier has showed direct red card Brisard would not call him as both red and yellow can be correct here.

Fantastic referee top 10 already in the world but he has to be punished for this with some week off.

    1. The article says that the Elite category counts 25 refeeres.
Well, at moment, the one for the first part of 2024-25 has 32 referees, so this would be a revolution in case with many demotions apart from the retirements. Retiring referees: Kulbakov, Orsato, Soares Dias, Hategan.
Unknown about Karasev, but possible retirement as well (but in all cases, not used as Elite).
Possible demotions due to performance (based on personal opinion): Grinfeeld, Sidiropoulos, Jovanovic.
We will see. I'm looking for getting the updates.

  13. 42' WOW, what a simulation detected by Xhaja. Believe me, all referees would have whistled penalty here, but he was right - no contact!

  14. David Šmajc with a tough first half in Stockholm. Poor foul detection and game management. 3 YCs for dissent, one for either team and one for the Legia bench.

    1. Challenging game for the referee but his sharp, chaotic style combined with poor rapport with players and some avoidable mistakes contributed to it. Many complaints from both sides but also unpunished mobbing at SPA/DOGSO incident in 45+16'. Whenever I watch the Slovene, I think he quickly looses his cool head. He should work on this aspect, trying to bring calmness to the games.

      Delete
  15. Interesting situation with the new interpretation of unintential handball and DOGSO for the Petroclub penalty in Edinburgh. Ngl I think this is an "overinterpretation" of the law, and probably not really what was intended. There is no reason for the arm to be in the position it is in and defender surely knows it, but takes a calculated risk

  16. Very good performance by Minakovic in one of decisive games in UECL tonight. Quality decisions with good managment and communication. His development continiues. Expected to see him in UCL in one of next two matchdays.

    ReplyDelete
  17. Did anyone here watch Alberola Rojas tonight?
How was the Spanish referee's performance?

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. I really didn’t like it… the style was too much. Terrible management in the final minute following free kick awarded to Heidenheim, and the incident in 66’ imo should have resulted in a RC for St Gallen #8 (delaying restart, followed by hand to the opponent’s head, then head to head)

      Delete
    2. I thought his performance was generally all right. The game was easy until the last maybe 10 - 15 minutes when the players got a bit agitated. I think he managed it ok though. Foul detection expected level and all cards supportable.

Two yellow cards at once for same player (delaying restart + hand stretched out to opponent’s head) in 66' would have been possible, but not mandatory imo.

      Delete
    3. I watched all match, and his performance was very good. He must be pleased with his debut in the Conference League. A good Spanish referee. In the 66th minute, he handled the confrontation between two players well. It was an important match for him, and I think he did very well.

    4. Thank you for your answers!
We need new names so that Spanish refereeing can once again have a place with great opportunities.

  19. Very good performance of the Finnish referee Mohammed Al-Emara in the indecisive game LASK (AUT) - VÍKINGUR REYKJAVÍK (ISL). Strong personality, good control of the game, clear decisions in matter of disciplinary sanctions. Penalty (handball) awarded immediately and correctly.

  20. The big call by Xhaja:
    https://streambug.org/cv/8b3656
As commentator says, one can discuss about a genuine fall and not simulation, but indeed the reaction of the player, looking at referee, for something to be whistled, allowed the Albanian to take this decision. Before that, it was a very good decision not to whistle a penalty because live you hardly detect that things went in a very different way than a foul by keeper.

    1. Strong decision. Good to detect unnatural fall from attacker and deliver strong action. Well done Xhaja!

    2. Very hard to spot this, specially because he was 30m away. Great decision by Xhaja.

  21. Quite physical match in SK Rapid v FC Kobenhavn for Beaton. To me he did well to control a not so easy match. One interesting incident reckless v SFP. I think could be more SFP but not easy to see live.

    1. I think YC OK and indeed impossible to see a potential RC live from the field. Copenhagen player had already put his leg while opponent arrived very quickly and there was tha impact. Also a bit of unlucky circumstance (to justify NO RC) but of course clear YC.

      Delete
    2. Borderline situation. Very hard to spot this live from the field. It's easier for VAR to change decision from YC to RC than RC to YC.
So, IMO, YC is better decision.

  23. Here the incidents you mentioned from Alberola Rojas game.

    66' Management
    https://streambug.org/cv/be1085

    90'+3 Free kick, management
    https://streambug.org/cv/1985e1

A remark about the card to Heidenheim nr. 10, I'm the first person who is happt when a referee acts in a very strong manner against player, but that showing procedure was terrible, a UEFA referee is not expected to do that. Must do it in calm and firm way, this looked to be very aggressive and this can also contribute to give the contrary effect (players more nervous than before). But about the overall management, I think one can be satisfied, he also put himself in the middle trying to stop it before.

About the final scene and the free kick it's indeed a poor management, to hide it he should have allowed the kick and then waited for 2 or 3 seconds before the end, but in this way it looked like that player impeding free kick won and referee resulted quite passive.

    ReplyDelete
  24. Very positive impressions from Al Emara in Linz, I must say.
I liked how he stayed on the field, the body language, how he took some decisions and the communication with players.
A very good disciplinary control, with clear fouls punished accordingly. Nevertheless, a few points for discussions.

    6' YC for SPA
    https://streambug.org/cv/050e3a

    23' Penalty for handball
    https://streambug.org/cv/71f92d

65' YC for reckless but could have waited for advantage
    https://streambug.org/cv/10c204

71' First YC for the player then sent off, correct decision, holding / SPA
    https://streambug.org/cv/bbf346

87' Possible YC for SPA / RC for DOGSO if whistled as foul
    https://streambug.org/cv/f8a1b9
But I think OK by referee to play on. Mutual action, you can see the arm by attacker grabbing defender, even if the more blatant action of the two is committed by defender who almost removed opponent shirt. Never a clear and obvious mistake and one should rather think about a SPA and not a DOGSO if whistled. VAR absolutely out from the scene, even more with referee making his assessment (clear gesture). Player making VAR gesture twice should have been booked, but we can't know if he was seen by officials.

    89' Second YC for SPA
    https://streambug.org/cv/543729
Very mandatory decision with a LoR holding. Difficult assesment, it seems that the action ended exactly before the line, wha a spot in case. But referee shouldn't have been blamed in case of VAR intervention for changing free kick into penalty, too much difficult and not possible for AR. Just a small remark, YC immediately issued but at first glance I think the Finnish had not in mind the player was already booked. Quite late reaction to then show the red.

The rest of cards, not shown in the clips, absolutely correct.
