  1. Some words/clips from Tello's Libertadores final: unfortunately, I thought it a poor performance. The referee from Argentina who refereed two Euro matches very tidily this summer totally lost his authority in the first minute of this game, when he didn't stand his ground against crazy mobbing by Miniero and indeed ultimately changed his decision to what they were protesting for. There were no mass confrontations but the level of match control was poor the whole way through, and the players showed no respect for the referee(ing). The game itself wasn't soooo challenging in terms of 'navigating' foul recognition/disciplinary, but was a match of individual flashpoints and incidents. Some of the most relevant incidents below.

Absolutely savage result and I guess nobody will contest the red card. I’m not suggesting to have awarded an IFK against the Miniero player for endangering his own safety by putting his head so low, but… Tello sent him off because he must have feared it impossible to control the game otherwise (probably correct) and saw the horrible gash on the Miniero player’s head. No reaction at all against mobbing; ‘mobbing works’.

Correct YC for a tactical foul (not DOGSO).

Penalty given, a clear one for VAR times. Tello went to give it live and then changed his mind, pointing toward the ball. In olden times (see 89’ of WC86 final), a no penalty decision would have been accepted because the attacker only kicked the ball to be able to move into the goalkeeper’s space and generate a foul.

Two YCs given for reckless tackles. No sanction at all for the coach (at least, in the game overall, it was an job could describe as attentive by Falcon Perez) who more-or-less entered the FoP. In ‘my’ refereeing, the foul by Telles should be a red card.

Penalty appeals against Botafogo. In my view, Tello was justified to play on at 48’ and fully correct at 54’ (defender kicked the ball and attacker rather put his leg across).

Bad behaviour/fouls not sanctioned with a yellow card.

Correctly allowed clinching goal. By the way, SAOT was in operation for this final.

I guess a performance that will be accepted but technically was (very?) poor. A final tangential remark: Tello is a great referee. If not for Hernandez turning a blind eye to a clear shirt tug, he would also have gone further in the Euro. But - besides the horrendous performance by Roldán in the last final, the previous referees of the Libertadores final were: LOUSTAU, PITANA, LOUSTAU, TOBAR, CUNHA (deliberate capital letters). One must acknowledge that Tello is a very different format of referee to those names. If then we can reflect on an ‘anti-big name’ era beckoning in UEFA, then the same is surely true in CONMEBOL as well.
