  1. Some words/clips from Tello's Libertadores final: unfortunately, I thought it a poor performance. The referee from Argentina who refereed two Euro matches very tidily this summer totally lost his authority in the first minute of this game, when he didn't stand his ground against crazy mobbing by Miniero and indeed ultimately changed his decision to what they were protesting for. There were no mass confrontations but the level of match control was poor the whole way through, and the players showed no respect for the referee(ing). The game itself wasn't soooo challenging in terms of 'navigating' foul recognition/disciplinary, but was a match of individual flashpoints and incidents. Some of the most relevant incidents below.

Absolutely savage result and I guess nobody will contest the red card. I’m not suggesting to have awarded an IFK against the Miniero player for endangering his own safety by putting his head so low, but… Tello sent him off because he must have feared it impossible to control the game otherwise (probably correct) and saw the horrible gash on the Miniero player’s head. No reaction at all against mobbing; ‘mobbing works’.

Correct YC for a tactical foul (not DOGSO).

    40' - https://www.streambug.io/cv/6ab351
Penalty given, a clear one for VAR times. Tello went to give it live and then changed his mind, pointing toward the ball. In olden times (see 89’ of WC86 final), a no penalty decision would have been accepted because the attacker only kicked the ball to be able to move into the goalkeeper’s space and generate a foul.

Two YCs given for reckless tackles. No sanction at all for the coach (at least, in the game overall, it was an job could describe as attentive by Falcon Perez) who more-or-less entered the FoP. In ‘my’ refereeing, the foul by Telles should be a red card.

    54' - https://www.streambug.io/cv/9ece9d
Penalty appeals against Botafogo. In my view, Tello was justified to play on at 48’ and fully correct at 54’ (defender kicked the ball and attacker rather put his leg across).

    +92' - https://www.streambug.io/cv/71660d
Bad behaviour/fouls not sanctioned with a yellow card.

Correctly allowed clinching goal. By the way, SAOT was in operation for this final.

I guess a performance that will be accepted but technically was (very?) poor. A final tangential remark: Tello is a great referee. If not for Hernandez turning a blind eye to a clear shirt tug, he would also have gone further in the Euro. But - besides the horrendous performance by Roldán in the last final, the previous referees of the Libertadores final were: LOUSTAU, PITANA, LOUSTAU, TOBAR, CUNHA (deliberate capital letters). One must acknowledge that Tello is a very different format of referee to those names. If then we can reflect on an ‘anti-big name’ era beckoning in UEFA, then the same is surely true in CONMEBOL as well.

    1. Mikael just a correction it's not Miniero, it's Mineiro :D

  2. Bad first half in Parma -Lazio
In the 3rd minute goal canceled for Lazio after OFR for an earlier foul: the contact is very light and it is understandable to whistle it on the field, but it is never a clear and obvious mistake. Bad here VAR
On 32' yellow card for SPA to Parma's Keita not given; Lazio players start yelling in the face of Zufferli, who gets scared and draws a yellow for Keita on the "order" of Lazio players
On 46' completely wrong penalty given to Lazio and taken away after OFR
On 49' Zufferli definitely loses control of the game and a brawl breaks out with all the benches on the field

    1. The first very poor performance so far for Zufferli this season, today's assignment was a step ahead for him, after some very good games he officiated recently. Unluckily only one half is enough to say that he has a nightmare day with two OFRs and many troubles in controlling players. Lazio players very agitated because after a good form today they are losing a game for the first time after a rather long period. Correct both interventions by VAR for me, in the first situation, foul close to sideline, one between FO and AR1 should have detected it. It is true that it isn't a big contact, but it is a foul here, and expected to be whistled. I just could argue that a less careful VAR could have missed it and I'm not sure all would have intervened, but I can't question on the incident. The second intervention was for removing a penalty, absolutely no foul on Lazio player. Second half maybe even moer challenging for him...

    2. I understand your point about the first OFR, Chefren, but I can't agree with it: for years in Italy it has been said "a contact has occurred, VAR cannot intervene," which means that the intensity of a contact can only be assessed by the referee on the field. Since in this case there is not a step on foot or an elbow to the face (i.e. "objective" fouls) but it is a contact, the OFR seems to me a stretch.
Anyway, for now, a quieter second half for Zufferli, of note a YC not given to Pellegrini (62') and a wrongly awarded corner on which Lazio came close to scoring.

    3. For those who want to give their opinion.
      Here the very discussed OFR.

At first, one of the best replays of the incident:

      Then, the OFR:

    4. Lazio games this season are in general very challenging for refs.

They have lot of nervous players eho complain a lot,Guendouzi,Rovella and Zacagni are there leading the protest all the time.
Players that make tough tackles like Gigot,Patric and Isaksen.

So plenty of their games this season have been very challenging.

They remind me of Getafe 18/19 when plenty of their matches were challenging cause of their physical play and rough tackles.

This time with Lazio you have nervous players that complain all the time so refs have very hard time managing their matches.

  3. Hahahaha what a PK for Real! Only for Real! Just incredible. What a dive, what a simulation. VAR ref was analyzing 5 minutes, but must not call the ref for OFR.

    1. It is very easy for the ref to help the club even with VAR. You just whistle penalty. If there is MICRO contact - VAR will not react! Contact is a contact - enough not to interviene. This is just…

    2. Yep,only for Real...Refs are instructed to help Real as much as they can, even they acored goals for Las Palmas and they are the reason that Barca lost 8 points in last 3 games.Yep,that's how life goes, everyone is for Real and against Barca.

  4. The delay in appointing a referee for Juventus - Man City is incredible. Bear in mind this game is played on Wednesday which is flexible (normally there won’t be a conflict with a domestic game). So, what are they waiting for.. Who has to press a button :)

    1. It's very delicate for me it could be even considered as play off for qualification for some aspects. A long time to read either Marciniak or Vincic name. I can't imagine a different referee there.

    2. Agree its a play-off and perhaps an unexpected one for the Refcom. I can imagine that the desired referee (Marciniak or Vincic) was already allocated to an other game which could cause the delay here.

Its interesting that almost always an Italian team is involved when we notice a delay. I’ve noticed it once with the Slovenian NT (EURO quali - Orsato confirmed after long delay). For the rest always an Italian team. Not even PSG :)

    4. Well, based on that we can only say no Nyberg, but this was already clear, not the best moment for him. On paper, however, he could have been candidate if in form.

    1. In KNVB refereeing circles it’s Makkelie who is clearly(!) Dutch nr.1, nationally as well as internationally.
I’m very curious which ref experts you’re referring to being of the opinion that Gözübüyük in Dutch top games performs better than Makkelie?

  6. Warning: ON-Topic point. Seems like Guteva was replaced as FO in CZE vs POR by Caroline Lanssens of Belgium.
