  1. For BENFICA-CHELSEA the truth is that Vincic had an extremely poor performance: decisions always unshareable (the handball on the penalty brainless, no RC for the insults from #6 Chelsea, second YC solely caused by the dynamics of the players' mutual movements), law authority, market discrepancies in assessment. Ultimately, absololutely insufficient for a FIFA standard

    1. Apart from the fact that you do have a valid point on some observations regarding Vincic it’s very intriguing that you more or less ‘kill’ the Slovenian, but refuse to accept ANY word of criticism towards his French colleague earlier on yesterday. The approach towards both officials seems without any nuance and and rather biased. A little more objectivity and nuance would not harm credibility.

    2. Vincic did quite well, and not extremely poorly, in my opinion.

      Delete
    3. @Unknown: pls note that I don’t do avoid to consider negative observations onto Letexier when adequately consequent to mistakes (the French referees have hard a not always performing year), in these FIFA CWC I didn’t find any relevant mistake to justify so killing critics on him. With honest obiectivity. Anyway this is my opinion, and I fully respect your one.

    4. By other hand, I consider Vincic among the best FIFA Referees and not only within UEFA. But I don’t usually take ham slices on my eyes: THIS performance has been terribly poor.
Nothwithstanding that, I’ll continue to consider Vincic a reliable referee. Good luck for him for future opportunities.

  2. Hi Chefren, what do you think about that?

    ReplyDelete
  3. Interesting for PSG first goal we have two attackers at far post moving from an offside position into defenders to act as blockers & ultimately created space for attacker unmarked goal. Some minor protests but nothing out of the ordinary... Not VAR stuff but no verbal warning from Sampiao prior to the ball being put in play maybe lacking? Bonus for set pieces coach lol

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. It looked like the defenders ran straight past them, so nothing punishable. If the defenders ran into those blockers, then it would have been an interesting decision

      Delete
    2. Suarez played the blockers onside didn’t he? Otherwise it would have been a clear Law11 offence.

      Delete
    3. Haven't seen another replay Mikael but he must've done?

      Delete
  4. Easy 1 half for Sampiao... Every stoppage & foul is a double blast of whistle though...lots of whistle can potentially lose its effectiveness when required but minor. Battle between PSG #7 & Miami RB should now be solved after RB YC but was bubbling along nicely before intervention

    1. In the stadium and there are a lot of whistles from the stands. Might be the reason.

  5. I predict that in the final 7 matches (QF, SF, and F), the following referees will each receive a match:
    • Sampaio
    • Faghani
    • Marciniak
    • Makkelie
    • Turpin
    • Abatti
    • Nyberg

    ReplyDelete
  6. Poor performance for letexier and vincic

    ReplyDelete
  7. 74‘ Bad management by Sampaio. Suarez with multiple clear actions of dissent right into the referees face and for everyone to see. Sampaio just stands there in a timid way. After all he issued s YC but way too late. Better late than never I guess.

    ReplyDelete
  8. I'm slightly surprised to see any added minutes... A normal difficulty match, helped by the dominance of PSG. An acceptable performance by Sampaio, but at no point did I feel fully convinced. Foul detection a little inconsistent, never quick to stop for a head injury (10'), and a few off the ball incidents missed. Still, nothing major to speak against

    ReplyDelete
  9. Szymon Marciniak sędzią meczu Real Madryt - Juventus

  10. Marciniak for Real-Juve and Tello for Dortmund-Monterrey (ArbitroInternacional)

    1. Let' say that UEFA referees get by far more interesting and hot games than CONMEBOL officials... South American referees for games like UEFA against AFC or UEFA - CONCACAF.. with most of the times an expected outcome (see Sampaio today).
Very rare to see a CONMEBOL referee in a full UEFA duel.
Faghani as AFC referee got more than them.

  11. The best referees in the tournament ali reza faghani, cesar ramos , facunda tello , baheida , tantashev

    1. Both Alireza Faghani and César Ramos appear to be out of step with the modern refereeing approach, often showing a lenient attitude toward clear infractions.

      Delete
  12. UEFA or FIFA, it's the same: for a game like Real Madrid - Juventus, not so many options. The top UEFA must get it. It will be Marciniak, loved by Collina. It's interesting to point out that Collina found himself to make an appointment for this game, after the very famous match in 2018 with Michael Oliver. He decided for sending the best name, but in this case in my opinion it will be not really challenging for the Polish, as one should expected a rather easy win by Spanish side, but of course then everything is possible.

Possible QF for Beida? Would be the success for CAF. I think they will wait and maybe send him to the easiest tie... would be deserved for sure!

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. QF for Beida is possible, but not too sure.
It could also be Faghani, Ramos, CONMEBOL and UEFA in the QF - or even more from CONMEBOL or UEFA.

      Delete
  13. Michael Oliver missed a clear foul during the first corner, where a Bayern Munich player used his hand to push a Flamengo defender. This should have been penalized, but instead, it led to a second corner from which Bayern scored.

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. I'm not convinced it was a corner, or if it came off the Bayern player last. That being said, very hard to spot, and I didn't see a clear push, just some mutual light contact, certainly not enough for a foul

      Delete
  14. There are six referee appointments remaining before the final. In my view, the following referees are the most likely candidates for these matches:
    • Turpin
    • Beida
    • Abatti
    • Ramos
    • Faghani

Not sure about the sixth name. FIFA may opt to assign one of the R16 referees for a third appearance (Letexier, Oliver, Barton, Vincic, Tello). However, names such as Zwayer or Taylor cannot be entirely ruled out I think.

The referee for the final is expected to be selected from the “R16 pool” of officials.

To confirm — there is no third-place match?

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. What about Makkelie? I would definitely add him to the list. I‘m not that sure about Abatti though, his second game was good but I‘m not sure about his first. Also a lot of Brazilian teams in KO stage.

Yeah, no third place match in this tournament, good decision IMO, such games are always unnecessary

    3. I notice Makkelie can hardly do anything good in Anonymous’ eyes. As I watched both of his games I take the opportunity to clearly disagree.

I think he more or less played it safe, but is that a bad approach? Do we prefer to see the Ramos approach? And if we consider which teams played each other (BRA-TUN and MEX-KSA) I actually think it was a very sensible approach!

Important to notice as well, there was hardly any dissent in both of his games and decisions were accepted without major problems (and both games were far from one-sided). We saw differently the last couple of days right? When applying an unclear or unpredictable line one would definitely expect much more dissenting behaviour.

So no, I don’t share Anonymous’ opinion and criticism.
Whether or not Makkelie will have another game of course depends on many other factors, as there are only 7 matches left still to be appointed.

      Delete
    4. Ah, there it is… Makkelie’s defense squad activated in record time ;-)

Don’t get me wrong — he is a reliable referee, especially in intercontinental clashes. Those matches seem tailor-made for him. He can be satisfied after two “expected level” performances (8.3–8.4 range) with no OFRs or controversy (!!!). That’s the most important thing.

But let’s be fair — there’s still plenty of room for improvement.
We all know what Makkelie is capable of when he’s at his very best. Right now, there’s a gap between him and the likes of Turpin, Letexier, Marciniak, Oliver, and Vincic. They’ve all overtaken him over the past three seasons — and not by a small margin. Of course, I wish him all the best and hope to see him back at his top level soon. Who knows next season.

      Delete
    5. There's no way Vincic is better than Makkelie, not because he has had a good game (RIV-MON) and a regular one, in addition to having more political support in CL than Makkelie, it does not mean that he is better. It's that simple. And yes, the others are at a better level…agree with that.

      Delete
    6. With CL I mean UEFA in general ;)

      Delete
    7. I’ve also been strongly opposed to the way Vincic was more or less ‘carried’ into his finals. The 2022 UEL final should have gone to Marciniak. And the Slovenian’s path to his 2024 UCL final was anything but a ‘bumpy road.’ That said, I can’t deny that Vincic is a solid referee. He never becomes the headline after a match — and that, in itself, is telling.

      Delete
    8. Yes, Vincic is solid (anyone would be if, regardless of your performance, you will get another game) but just that. He has never "exploited" to reach the level of "confidence" and "security" that Marciniak, Turpin and even Oliver give you. But well, it is and will be my opinion...

      Delete
    9. And adding, for me it is totally unacceptable the attitude of the Chelsea player (I don't remember the name) who says something like "you are f*** shit" or something like 4 times after OFR. I understand, the whole tournament has been like this, the players say and do what they want, but, that is the image that a World Cup, CL final, EURO semifinal referee gives??? I expected a little authority from Vincic, not just a visual threat… I don't know if all the European referees would have ignored that...

      Delete
    10. That was a poor image, indeed. I wonder whether it made any difference to Vincic that the player in question was the captain. But it shouldn’t matter. The incident was clearly visible to everyone. There should have been a sanction; it undermines his authority. The level of dissent at this tournament has been staggering. FIFA could address it by releasing bodycam footage. Or will it take another official getting assaulted before action is taken? Oh well.

      Delete
    11. Yes, and I want to make it clear, it's not because it's Vincic, this is NOT acceptable for any referee.

But what can you expect from FIFA? Let’s be ready for the next games…

      Delete
  15. Wow,that was some foul from Pulgar.

I think if Oliver issued RC he would not be wrong.

    ReplyDelete
  16. 43' A potential red card offense was committed by Flamengo’s #5, who went straight into Harry Kane’s knee with a dangerous challenge. ] Michael Oliver issued a yellow card for recklessness, and there was no VAR intervention.

    ReplyDelete
  17. Very tense match that Oliver is somehow handling well.
Tense for the fact that Brazilian team is losing and they are becoming more and more frustrated as the match goes on.

No mobbing like Argentinian teams, but late tackles and dangerous fouls.

Dark YC was given for very dangerous foul.

Then after that we had conflicts between players and one more late foul that he punished .

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. It's unpleasant, but characteristic of modern FIFA tournaments, to see (for instance) the extremly blatant aggressive behaviour/not retreating at 18' just ignored, but in the circumstances Oliver has adapted his unobstrusive style relatively well thus far. Polgar's foul was surely an example of 'challenge as an attack', but it is hard to say 100% without having seen the live sequence. Good that the English ref didn't surrender to anarchy and delivered two cautions for aggressive behaviour in the aftermath of it.

      Delete
    2. IMO rather RC than YC in 43‘. Only argument to support is not a full contact.
Yes, game definitely heated up after the foul.

The corner/goal kick/offensive foul incident in 5‘ prior to the goal was handled supportable I think. Goretzka pushes himself up with the arms on the opponents shoulder but these incidents are often not punished nowadays. And if no foul I think corner is correct according to the replays I watched.

      Delete
  18. Correct penalty given by Oliver and AR2 Mainwaring for very clear handball in 55‘

    ReplyDelete
  19. 53' Fairly clear, but somewhat rare to see a handball penalty given on field. And good that Oliver was very alert when the ball went in the net that Flamengo players would want to get the ball quickly to restart play

    ReplyDelete
  20. 64' very tricky SPA situation where Sane cleverly puts himself in front of Wesley.

    Once foul whistled,deserved YC

    ReplyDelete
  21. Now maybe soft YC influenced by Flamengo' mobbing.

    ReplyDelete
  22. What do you think about a repeating a nomination to CWC final?

    Marciniak (2023), Taylor (2022), Ramos (2017), Faghani (2015) handled a final.

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. For me with the great year he had, I would give it to Turpin.. but we’ll see

      Delete
  23. Now Kane with very late tackle that earns him YC.

Great awareness by Oliver and great prevention of escalation by showing card very early.

    ReplyDelete
  24. Oliver very good again - he still has the occasional erratic moment but I think he has now overtaken Taylor to be honest. Final candidate? I think the penalty award on field gives him a good chance

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. I think there a lot of factors to be taken into account when it comes to the final appointment, and performance might even not be the most important.
Final teams of course play a significant role. But then for example, which confederation do they want to grant this final? Have they already in mind which confederation they want to award next year’s ’big’ final to? Is this year’s final referee excluded from next year’s final?
I think many factors with much uncertainty as to how Refcom regards them.

      Delete
  25. I would not say very good,I would say great performance given circumstamces and tension that this match had.

Maybe even the best performance if the tournament, also with great match from both teams.

Great fitness, always close to the play and he proved that with right approach and early actions, teams from South America can be calmed down.

Debatable decision will be very dark YC to Pulgar.
Penalty was well spotted and rightly whistled.

    ReplyDelete
  26. So far, nothing has been heard about referees who have left the ‘base camp’ in Miami, right?

Now, with only 11 matches left, isn’t it striking that no officials have been released from duty? FIFA began this CWC with 29 CRs. Why wait so long to reduce the group, and keep officials like Kovács (or Sy) in standby mode with little prospect of officiating?

The official explanation likely involves precaution — illness, injuries, or underperformance elsewhere. Still, the psychological strain must be real. At a certain point, a longer holiday may serve better than quiet redundancy…

    ReplyDelete
  27. Any prediction on bayern-psg? Can we rule out marciniak since he has real juve? And Vincic last performance not good enough for this right? Kovacs seems also out of this.. are Eskas and Makkelie front runners for this?

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. It seems that the referee for this game comes from other lands

      Delete
    2. Makkelie has never refereed PSG again since the game in 2022. I don’t think he will return refereeing PSG in a QF (the same goes for Bayern and Marciniak by the way). And I think Eskas will remain with one game.

How about Barton, in case of good performance today.
Otherwise Vincic (always an option) or Faghani (repeating Bayern after MD2 though).

      Delete
    3. Quite interesting, that the UEFA options for that game are practically limited to Vincic.
I would add Ramos to the list of candidates.

      Delete
    4. There has to be at least one more CONMEBOL assignment in this tournament (probably two, but let's talk about the first for now).

If Abatti is deemed good enough to warrant a KO match, then Bayern v PSG makes perfect sense. It's a great test for him and mirrors the Letexier assignment (younger referee, strong in confederation but not yet FIFA-established). Also, Brazilian clubs are on the other side of the bracket.

You can then use either Tello or Valenzuela for a semi or final, as deemed necessary/appropriate, if you need to hae a second CONMEBOL assignment.

      Delete
    5. Abatti could also be assigned to Real Madrid/Al Hilal vs Dortmund/Monterrey — a fully neutral option if one of the European teams fails to qualify.

The same goes for Beida, although he could get Chelsea’s game, right?

      Delete
    6. I believe, another game for Sampaio is a bit more likely than one for Abatti. Otherwise, appointing Abatti for PSG-MIA and Sampaio for a QF seemed more logical.
But I guess, even Abatti in QF and Sampaio in SF or F is not impossible.

      Delete
  28. I think uefa who is made good letexier not letexier

    ReplyDelete
  29. I would appoint Makkelie as 4th official in PSG-Bayern — would be a sensible move imo.

The backlash from the 2022 match has been unfair and blown out of proportion. Yes, Makkelie could’ve called a foul on the goalkeeper—but PSG were still ahead and heading through after that first goal. It wasn’t a decisive goal, and you can’t blame a referee for the two legitimate goals PSG conceded afterwards. The fuss was never about the call itself, but about egos and scapegoating. If it had been a clear error, VAR would have stepped in. It was a bold decision—and in hindsight, a rare example of courage, especially given how hesitant some referees now are with PSG. UEFA mishandled the situation and sweeping it under the carpet only made things worse. It set a dangerous precedent: that referees must keep “certain people” happy, or face consequences. That damages not only Fair Play, but trust in officiating as a whole.

    ReplyDelete
  30. If we have a possible Inter Milan-Manchester City, I would put Makkelie there. PSG-Bayern? Hmm. Maybe Ramos? ;)...Faghani I think it's a good option for Palmeiras-Chelsea, the other key with RMA it’s difficult, maybe Dahane in a Real Madrid-Monterrey game? But if it’s Real Madrid-Dortmund i’m not sure if Collina would send a CAF referee to this type of game…But it’s possible too…In this case i’d say Turpin.

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. Inter–City feels like a natural fit for Turpin. Even more so given that PSG are in the opposite bracket.

    2. Having PSG in the other bracket is irrelevant, see Sampaio.

  33. Barton clearly a bit overwhelmed in this game

He himself gets in the way and interferes with play because of his poor positioning and reading of game.

    4. If he showed a RC for the Chelsea’s player challenge the last game, this should also be RC.

      Delete
    5. Yeah, it should be a RC, but it gets overlooked too often even with VAR.

    6. No RC: casual shot due to the dynamics of the action

    7. To not even whistle a foul is completely and utterly unacceptable.

    8. Absolutely, you can't compare with previous red card by Barton in the other game, totally different situation, here you must try to understand why player stepped on opponent, the other was a clear serious action...

  39. Sorry but this behaviour from FLU coach cant be tolerated.

    RC should have been shown.

Sorry but for coaches law should be stricter this was direct delay and for less things coaches were sent off.

    4. This, the Cano (absurd) YC, the DiMarco RC, and the A2 offside missed, are the big mistakes this first half. I’m sorry but not a good performance.

      Delete
  40. That should have been a red card for Fluminense coach, delaying restart for opposing team. Similar to the incident with Kovacs and Arteta

    ReplyDelete
  41. Very poor mistake by AR2, hard to accept at this level.
About Barton, basically some very good decisions, but still the same trend we saw in his previous game. Rather hectic and due to his style, he can easily fall in simulations by players, who try to make the opponents booked. Should work in this aspect, but again, it's hard, that's just him. Still, spotted some very good fouls and YC like he did in the first appearance. Maybe so far with a small rather negative nuance but to be watched in second half.

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. Everybody gets to see the Barton that we in CONCACAF know all too well. He can have a single game where he’s good. But he’s incapable of putting together a string of good performances.

      Delete
    2. Completely agree @arbiter

      Delete
    3. All right, Chefren.
Anyway in my opinion, Barton's biggest problem is a not-so-solid personality that reduces his authority. The notarized way on the YC to the FLU coach is an example of this

      Delete
    4. An aspect of his personality is maybe not so solid, but in terms of having it, you must agree, definitely better than many other referees, because having just courage to taking decisions, not caring about the rest, is a great skill. Then, to follow, of course one must look for accuracy, but still, I prefer a wild refeere from El Salvador, than any "robot-like" European referee...

  42. This match is getting CONCACAFed. Your welcome world. You get to see the B/S we have to put up with in our backwards region.

  43. 67’ suspect penalty to INT for more than possible handball. Is VAR sleeping?!

    1. Nothing there. Only Italians see a penalty there.

    2. Arm in rather close position, not 100% and a small percentage is maybe missing, that's why an Italian sees a penalty, I can understand your point, but be sure this one is not for intervention ,not even in Italy :)

    3. @Chefren: reliable opinion, possible but anyway not sure for no sanction.
@ Arbiter, no Italian referee would decided for handball penalty in BENF-CHELSEA…

    4. It’s Fluminense v Internazionale Milan. Not Benfica v Chelsea. Stay on topic.

    5. Be quite, Arbiter. I’m perfectly on topic and you understood clearly. For you info I was a National Referee for years, and currently am a Ref Observer.

    6. Oh okay, so you're part of the problem. The reason 'modern" referees are incapable of showing cards. The reason they're intimidated by dissent.

  44. Fluminense is masterfully milking the clock with their gamesmanship, dark arts, and time wasting. I mean if the referee is going to be complacent and complicit. Why not do whatever it takes.

  45. Did we get to see a replay of the 85. caution to FLU#29? Live it looked like a violent conduct using the elbow, but I dienst see a replay.

  46. About the possible RC in first half, agree with VAR that it was not clear and obvious mistake, you can't be sure Inter player did that on purpose and once you don't think that, you can go with YC. It's important to underline this decision of supporting referee, because the kind of foul is very tricky, very often misjudged. I also think a RC directly by Barton would have found the same outcome, support.

  47. So much for the Inter v City that some of you were already assigning a referee for.

  48. Average Barton will be overshadowed by Inter's "great" performance.

So many things missed,so much different criterium in 2nd half and very questionable positioning in plenty situations, one could even say that he impeded Barella when FLU scored 2nd goal.

    Very average.

    1. Barton performance: not decisive in the result but average for technics and discipline decision, personality and tachtical sense.
      This, overall 8.40

    2. I'm surprised by the majority of comments, I think that Barton refereed this delicate game quite well. Di Marco's foul is only a (missed) yellow card according to current instructions, and the Salvadorian made a number of very good decisions, such as the bookings to Asllani (perfectly read duel where both players made tackles) and Freytes (reckless step on foot outside the penalty area). Cano behaved in quite a rude manner towards the referee, unreasonably trying to push through him in order to try and take a quick freekick, so it is understandable that Barton chose to admonish him. Despite the lawlessness present in almost all games in this tournament, tacitly approved by FIFA who don't care and totally inconcieveable 15yrs ago, all of the five knockout matches have been refereed well so far in my view.

    3. Although fully respecting your opinion, pls allow me not to not agree. No performance with extremely critical mistakes but different score level for each one.
      For me:
      Letexier 8,50
      Vincic 8,30
      Sampaio 8,50
      Oliver 8,60
      Barton 8,40

    4. Is a missed red card on a coach not considered a serious error? Or do we pretend it did not happen

  49. 27' YC for SPA. some DOGSO Considerations but SPA seems like best choice to me

  50. FIFA = "Captains only"
Teams and Referee's = Refer to Man City v Al Hilal 10th thru 11th minute
Such a shameful disgraceful image to transmit to the world.
