Maybe the new kits for next season will premiere in the UEFA Women's Euro, given the news last week. Let's see!
ReplyDeleteI'm sorry, which news are you talking about? I completely missed it 😅
DeleteThey have renewed their contract: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eOrwphEEL9Y
DeleteI definitely spend too little time with this forum: Referee Observer Marta Frias Acedo has not caught my attention in connection with high-profile matches and/or referees so far; I would not have expected to read her name at the (Women's) EURO ...
ReplyDeleteEspecially for you, this season's appointments of Marta Frías Acedo:
Delete30/05 UWNL Serbia - Hungary (Kirsty Dowle)
26/02 UWNL Belgium - Portugal (Eléni Andoníou)
12/12 UWCL Bayern München - Juventus (Stéphanie Frappart)
29/10 EUROPO Portugal - Azerbaijan (Shona Shukrula)
08/10 UWCL Roma - Wolfsburg (Catarina Campos)
18/09 UWCLQ Hammarby - Benfica (Miriama Bočková)
07/09 UWCLQ Paris FC - Sparta Praha (Déborah Anex)
04/09 UWCLQ Paris FC - First Vienna (Hristiyana Guteva)
Thank you very much for your special service! ;-) I must admit that I indeed already heard of names like "Stéphanie Frappart", countries like "Belgium" and "Portugal", and clubs like "Bayern München" and "Juventus" before. ;-) However, from briefly skimming through the lists, I was more familiar with observers like Blaženka Logarušić than with this Spanish lady. ;-)
DeleteMarta Frías Acedo became #2 of CTA-RFEF section of women's refereeing, it kinda makes sense.
DeleteStrong focus on the Hungarian referee since she returned, she has been under close observation by the committee.
ReplyDeleteMeanwhile, it’s a crucial test for the Romanian, who will be officiating under the eyes of committe member Damkova.
In recent times, the concept of "opening match" in these tournaments has been somewhat changed, traditionally, it should feature the host team, but instead, there is always another match played before it. So, we should consider the Hungarian referee's match as the opener, even if the major spotlight is on the Romanian referee with the host nation. About VAR, one could find particular to see Popa only as AVAR. Given the experience he could have got main VAR duty with referee from same nation.
It’s misguided to not have the host nation be the opening match. It’s takes away the glitz and glamour of the opening ceremonies. Opening day should only feature a single match.
DeleteI agree. I don't know why this one changed, in almost all tournaments, in recent times.
DeleteBecause the male controlled football world doesn’t give the same considerations to the women’s game. In a true misogynistic manner, they’re still viewed as lesser’s.
DeleteEURO 2012 had two matches on MD1. WC 2022 was slated to have several on MD1 until a relatively late change. Were those misogynistic decisions?
DeleteAlso the defending champion, not the host, opened up the men's World Cup tournament through the entire 20th century. Were the first 15 or so men's World Cups misogynistic?
Copa America 2024 opened with Argentina v Canada, rather than with the hosts. I'm sure that was misogynistic and you pointed out as much at the time.
The contemperanouse U21 men's UEFA competition had two matches on the opening day, just like this event. I'm sure that was misogynistic. Or perhaps ageism?
Some people will complain about anything.
On the merits here, if you or anyone else thinks that the Iceland v Finland tie will distract or take away the glitz and glamour from the Switzerland v Norway evening affair, I don't know what to tell you.
So much to say about the same issue. I'd agree with you but then we'd both be wrong. I hope that the rest of your week is as pleasant as you are.
DeleteYou make this blog unbearable to read. It is constant, incessant whinging. It is absolutely rich for you to complain about other people's disposition. 99% of regular readers on this forum will see through this act.
DeleteNothing in my post above is "unpleasant." It's pushing back against a ludicrous argument you made with facts. If you can't argue on the merits when facts are involved, so be it. It must be tough engaging with other humans when you can't just throw cards around to win out, I guess. It's absolutely incredible that you complain I have "so much to say." I would say the lack of self-awareness is astounding, but I imagine you're completely self-aware and know exactly what you're doing.
I don't want to read and post here because of your behavior. I suspect many others feel the same way. It is worth at least putting it in writing so blog administrators see.
It's unfortunate that you feel that way.
DeleteIs there an AR at this tournament not previously announced?. Remember seeing a post about the Andorran Fernandez being injured so wonder if anyone has replaced her.
ReplyDeleteIt seems as Paulina Baranowska is missing as well, and I don't see / read other assistant referees replacing them. Would be a courtesy gesture by UEFA and I agree with it, once you select some officials and they are out for inury, it is rather unfair replacing them with other names when tournament is close. But we will see, I don't know for sure.

I don't think Pesu will do three games in the group stages and Gasperotti only one. This should only happen in case of injury or extremely bad performance. Also, while it isn't impossible, appointing Ferrieri Caputi and Gasperotti on the same day would mean only one of them can have their countryman Di Paolo as VAR, and I think that makes it unlikely
DeleteMartincic is fourth official in Denmark - Sweden one day before France-England…It’s absolutely not possible.
DeletePoor broadcaster, due to a very long replay, they missed big event live, a second YC to a player who was already booked and after that, still not shown the exact reason so far...
ReplyDeleteReplay shown about three minutes after situation happened, very evident stamp by Icelandic player and clear YC. I must agree though that the time it took was very poor by the broadcaster
DeleteI’m the meantime we had a replay which showed a (very) reckless stamp on the ankle, so very good second Yc. However, the second Yc was shown after playing advantage, which actually shouldn’t have been applied after a Rc challenge and no goal scoring opportunity.
DeleteBoth yellow cards were correct. TV director slow to show the clear second yellow that was given after an advantage.
ReplyDeleteNow I saw it. I agree, correct decision.
ReplyDeleteVery strict officiating by Hungarian referee. Something, we know, that is a bit lost today at international stage. Maybe in Women's refereeing it's easier for them to apply the rules.
Indeed there are clear differences between Men's and Women's football, at least when it comes to respect for referee. In the last minute you could clearly see the Icelandic players getting frustated after a few decisions against and Finland trying to waste time, but they still respected the work of the referee. If this was men's football, the game could easily get out of control in such circumstances
DeleteI’d say for tomorrow:
ReplyDeleteWAL-NED: Klarlund (DEN)
FRA-ENG: Ferrieri Caputi (ITA)
*If Overtoom (NED) is in Ferrieri’s team, I’d say Olofsson in FRA-ENG.
What whistle is Peșu using? Sounds awful. Fox 40 Eclipse?
ReplyDeleteWhistle is poor. Barely audible
DeleteVery clear handball, whistled by Peșu without VAR.
ReplyDeleteWell, now we have a very soft penalty for holding.
ReplyDeleteIn my opinion a mistake, it was nothing more than a hand on opponent, but live you can be deceived, thinking about a more serious incident.
Strictly according to VAR, Higler is right to support, however a missed offside (tight) before "saved" this decision.
Is there semi automated offside? didn’t look offside to me. Agree penalty decision was a mistake
DeleteYes, there is. (Or at least according to the UK commentators)
DeleteAnd there you go, a whole toe offside
DeleteYou were correct, very tight
Delete71' The offside means we might never know for sure if the foul would have been overturned, but after an excellent penalty given, a poor decision, there was no foul from Harviken. No blame to AR1 however, looked a very tight offside
ReplyDeleteWould be a good discussion with observer as to what might have happened
DeleteWas there enough to ask for an OFR?
I think the decision would have been confirmed, staying as mistake by Romanian referee. No blame at all for AR1, impossible to see that offside, I agree with you on that.
DeleteI am quite sure, Higler would have intervened and should also have in my opinion. There is absolutely no decisive holding contact that makes the swiss player fall. Either she slips or dives, but anyway penalty is a clear and obvious mistake here I think. Too formalistic to think about confirming this decision...
DeleteStrange that the referee has a big white piece of paper attached to the back of her yellow card. From certain angles it looks like she is showing a white card when booking players.
ReplyDeletePredictions MD2
ReplyDeleteNOR-FIN: Campos, Sousa, Gomes (all POR), Shukrula (NED) - Martins (POR), Cvetkovic (SRB)
SUI-ISL: Gasperotti (ITA), Overtoom (NED), Baranowska (POL), Rivera (ESP) - Popa (ROU), Rafalski (GER)

FRA-WAL: Pesu, Costatinescu (both ROU), Grushko (UKR), Grundbacher (SUI) - Popa (ROU), Rafalski (GER)
Rather lenient approach by Grundbacher, she booked only for holdings / SPA / tactical fouls, while she left unpunished reckless challenges in my opinion at least twice, the last one a few minutes ago. Different style if compared to yesterday's officiatings. Very poor game to be watched, also due to very high temperature.
ReplyDeleteIn 45'+2 a situation similar to what happeened in Nyberg game at Club World Cup. Referee warning keeper wasting time before a goal kick to be taken. In this case, one could misunderstand the 8 seconds law, to be applied when keepers are in possession of the ball and not on the ground. Indeed, Italian coach protested with fourth official abou that, but of course it's possible referee wanted just to warn keeper in that situation, with the team that had scored a few minutes earlier.
ReplyDeleteI've been rather unconvinced all game by Grundbacher. Foul detection isn't consistent, nor is her line on what is careless/reckless. Several times advantage could/should have been played and it hasn't and it seems now the players are getting rather frustrated. Although it generally being a poor game of football hasn't helped either
ReplyDeleteToo much lenient on forgiving reckless challenges and when close to the end, the game was indeed a bit agitated. My idea is that applying this style in a challenging game would have led Swiss referee to troubles. Staying at what we saw, very poor football show, still one could say decent job, but no real inspiration. Mostly agree with your assessment, would like to watch her in more challenging matches to understand more.
DeleteI like to watch Grundbacher but today she was very different from the games I saw of her in Swiss League. She made many mistakes too... where it seemed to me that she wasnt totally focused... But it was probably because it was her debut in a big tournament and one must not forget that it is in her country, so she must have felt the «weight of responsibility», in a way, as often happens
DeleteVery quick to stop with non-serious injuries when play should continue, but very slow with that 90' head injury. Play had to stop immediately!
ReplyDeleteI'm sorry but Demetrescu's handling of the injury in 51-52 I think it was really left a lot to be desired. Luckily ball went out soon after but an elite category referee like her should absolutely have recognized the potential seriousness of the injury more or less directly. Also took a few seconds before she actually called the medics on
ReplyDeleteSomeone ask which whistle was used last night by Romanian referee. Actually it is Fox 40 Sonik whistle, the top 3 loudest whsitles in world(can develop 128 db, when used properly, and it is only 0,4 db quieter than Molten). Used by Letexier and Carballo when was active. Top whistle, but need to be used properly .
ReplyDeleteI mean, the way it sounded there is no way it was that one. In that case she has serious issues with her whistle technique. It sounded a lot more like a Fox 40 Eclipse or a broken Classic.
DeleteI use both the Valkeen and the Sonik, and sometimes the Fox 40 Classic, and I can say that the Sonik is the most difficult to use of these, as it's not easy to tell which side is the right one to blow - as it's a very unstable whistle and super light. That's why on the field of play when you want to whistle something you always have to be extra careful not to whistle on the wrong side and this can be very hard to tell in matter of tiny seconds. The Valkeen, which has its own grip, is 100% better in this respect. In terms of sound, they are very similar yeah - and I can tell you that yes, they are both extremely loud
DeleteMany of you are saying that she had trouble with the Sonik - Im not suprised - She was probably blowing the whistle upside down - which happens a lot with this whitsle as its very hard to tell the right side if you are not accustomed.
DeleteUsing a whistle upside down is rarely an issue. Especially not for those who use a lanyard or similar. Some simply can’t whistle. Valkeen and Sonik Blast don’t sound similar at all. You can instantly tell which one is which. However telling the difference between a Valkeen with almost any other Molten is very difficult to tell. Nothing sounds like the Sonik Blast other than the Fox 40 Fuziun which nobody uses.
DeleteNo, for sonik is a big big issue. 100%. And Im sure that happened in the game. ( I said it was similar in the sound aspect - like they are both extremely loud ) not in that matter
DeleteI've used the Sonik Blast as my primary whistle for well over 10 years. I've never had a problem blowing it in a crisp, clear, and loud manner. No matter what side of the whistle was "up" or "down", or whatever "upside down" is supposed to mean.
DeleteAs with any whistle, it comes down to technique. I've seen/heard referees get little to no sound out of a Fox 40. Because they just blow air into the whistle. And it's not about just blowing air into a piece of plastic.
Actually, there is difference in whistling with Sonik whistle. If you blow in whistle when fox 40 logo is up, it will be more than perfect. If you blow if it is down, it will not be soo good. So, yesz there is about technics of blowing, but also in technical manner.
Delete*so
Delete*yes
I'll say it again. I've never had that problem. It sounds the same and just as loud either way.
Delete«dont know what upside down means» lol we have here the master of the whistle - to say that the sound will be equal is kinda crazy
DeleteI've been called worse by better. I'm sure you'll figure it out... eventually.
Deletei fully agree this time with arbiter, i used also the sonik blast whistle for several years, it really doesn't matter wich side off the whistle you use, both give the same sound, Pesu definetly doesn't use a sonic blast!
DeleteOT:
ReplyDeleteUnlike Adidas, Diadora, Givova. Marcron (much like Nike) has become notable for its unimaginative and uninspiring referee kit designs.
I was expecting a little more pizzaz from a company that's designed some truly eye-catching kits for its clubs.
But nope, they put out another set of boring plain kits.
People like Macron the most. Puma the least, then Adidas. Macron is the clear favourite amongst referees when it comes to design.
DeleteCookie cutter, bland, boring, unimaginative, and uninspiring. No referee kits will ever match the gloriousness of the 1994 World Cup kits.
DeleteGasperotti with a debut before Ferrieri Caputi, analyzing the situation at moment it looks like the very poor season of the latter was taken into consideration by UEFA.
ReplyDeleteOne should have expected Ferrieri Caputi "main" Italian referee, with some chances to get a game for Gasperotti, but as for now it's the contrary.
Nevertheless,, let's wait for Ferrieri Caputi first appearance, maybe it will be a big one...
Let's remember Gasperotti officiates in serie C, the third Italian division.
DeleteI think that you're putting the cart before the horse. This has just begun. Let's wait and see how this all plays out through the tournament. By the end, we'll see who got more assignments and who got the better assignments.
DeleteI don’t closely follow the careers of the female referees, but I read that Maria Ferrieri Caputi officiated three matches in the Nations League A as well as a semifinal in the Champions League after last year's U20 World Cup final. From this, I would not conclude that she has a bad standing internationally. I could imagine that she might, for example, get the top match of Group C between Germany and Denmark.
DeleteOT: Does anybody know what whistle Orsato used in his career? The yellow one. Looked like a Fox 40 Classic but it was not. Completely different sound than anyone else.
ReplyDeleteRe to Orsato whistle: Fox 40 classic yellow, but Orsato have specific blowing style, so it produce a little bit different sound!
ReplyDeleteI am not sure. You can only get one sound from it unless you cover the holes. And I see no text on his whistle, which the Classic has.
DeleteAustrian Assistant Gutschi with only 3 days between games
ReplyDeleteThat was one hell of an OFR... Good decision tho in the end.
ReplyDeleteAgree. Penalty to be whistled however attacking foul prior that which actually caused the handball. IMO correct outcome in the end.
DeleteI'm not as convinced. There might have been a little bit of contact by the attacker, but to me it looked more like Janogy lost her footing more than anything else. I could've missed something though. The handball would probably have been expected in modern football, but personally I could absolutely do without that being the case
DeleteIf the choice is between a shitty penalty or a shitty defensive free kick, I prefer the latter.
DeleteVery long check for handball and a foul in the APP. The handball is fairly clear, so the question comes of the foul before it. I don't think that gets given as a foul if there isn't a handball, its very difficult to tell if there was a slight trip from the available angles. I also think the hand placement was not a consequence of the fall but was, should we say 'cleverly deliberate'. I think to give the FK for the trip was the safest decision, but I'm not 100% convinced that was a foul. Sweden perhaps a little fortunate
ReplyDeleteHandball would be fair enough, but I think better to stick with on field call. There is absolutely no foul beforehand so the outcome after OFR was wrong

ReplyDeleteHere the OFR.
Both VAR at first and then Edina Alves very unsure, in the end stadium lost the patience and I can't blame them. Too long, definitely too long. Top officials are expected to handle challenging situations in shorter time.
And I don't see any foul before, for me clear handball to be whistled, maybe it was just Tiago Martins, inviting her, to inform that it was possible to whistle a foul before (and for this reason very likely the delay of the call from Nyon).
What exactly do we expect Janogy (SWE) to do with her hands/arms in that situation?
DeleteNothing to report about Frappart, one (very) wrong free kick given for the goalkeeper, who was hit by her own teammate, besides no crucial decisions had to be taken. Fair match. AR2 made a good impression, two very close offside calls seemed correct.
ReplyDeleteGER V POL
ReplyDeleteIn the 10th minute. What did Frappart whistle for? Was it for a foul against the POL keeper? Her own teammate stepped on her.
Yes. Obvious that the AR told her to whistle. Frappart didn't even show any body language after the whistle. Strictly by the law, that’s a penalty then. Offence against a teammate. But of course that wouldn’t be appropriate.

ReplyDeleteThe KNVB recently reported on the formation of a “Talents Group” consisting of seven referees, intended to be prepared as future successors to Makkelie and Gözübüyük.
Am I the only one thinking: Is succession planning only starting now? Why not earlier..?

In Poland, Marcin Szulc (v-ce chairman at both Mikulski and Przesmycki) has been appointed interim head of referees.
ReplyDeleteQuiet first half for the Danish referee in WAL - NED.
ReplyDeleteThe level of difficulty of EURO games is absolutely low so far, if we compare it to Men's competitions.
One interesting decision, YC for time wasting in 23'.
In this case, the Danish referee was aware that Wales was the underdog, already aiming for keeping the 0-0 in first half, certainly a decision that could be assessed as somewhat excessive.
Very easy second half with clear win by NED.
DeleteI must say, very good assistant referees at this tournament, ou can forigve the mistake before the penalty removed in Pesu game, the rest excellent in all the other games.
+1, very low game. but neverthless Frida Mia continues to show that she is very reliable for sure
Delete8' Very reckless challenge by #8 England.
ReplyDeleteThe style we know by Olofsson, just a warning.
To me, YC to be issued.
And another offside impossible to see live, VAR intervention to disallow England goal, no blame AR2.
DeleteDon't think it is a clear reckless. Public warning is fine. The AR2 cannot be blamed for the offside although she was a bit out of position.
ReplyDeletePossible foul before 2-0 France, agree no clear and obvious mistake.
ReplyDelete70' A completely missed reckless foul there. With some officials, a RC check can be a subtle way of saying there was a minimum reckless tackle and a delayed YC is seen. But not there, studs caught the England captain high on the knee
ReplyDeleteIt makes my blood boil when a referee misses an obvious foul. And then compounds their mistake with endless calm down/relax hand gestures.
DeleteHere's a novel idea. Maybe less gesturing and more foul recognition? I know, groundbreaking!
Does seem strange that VAR check for RC and yet no foul given. How does that work?
DeleteNo final for Olofsson. It is to risky and the VAR isnt that good tonight.
ReplyDelete75' First YC in this match. For me a clear mistake. Toone is playing the ball - I was not seen any foul.
ReplyDeleteThat's absolutely a correct YC. But you can understand the frustration from the English that especially the challenge in 5 minutes earlier didn't result in anything.
DeleteMario Escobar (GUA) would be so proud of Olofsson's performance. They both step on to the pitch with the sole mission of showing the fewest cards as possible. No matter how rash the challenges are.
DeleteNot exactly the best performance by Olofsson, no big errors but didn't really seem convincing.
ReplyDeleteA few days in and this is my impression of these UEFA Women's referees.
ReplyDeleteThey're either:
A) Copying the CONCACAF style/approach of letting everything go by not calling anything.
OR
B) They have terrible foul recognition.
There's been entirely too much "play on, nothing there" for my taste. Women's football is already entertaining enough. There is absolutely no need or reason to artificially manufacture game flow by not whistling obvious fouls.
Martins only AVAR with Campos. I wonder if planned rotation, or if delibrately keeping him out of the spotlight for a few days after the intervention in Den-Swe
ReplyDeleteSame happened with Popa in Pesu game, but in the case of Portuguese for sure we had a potentially more experienced VAR to take the main role.
DeletePossibly Alves works with Martins the following day.
DeleteWhen we are still in 23', very challenging first half for AR2 Amina Gutschi, I must say that so far she justified the big trust by committee, first AR to get second game and many appointments before the big tournament.
ReplyDeleteOn another note very easy for Gasperotti so far without almost nothing to do.
According to Wikipedia, 13 referees and 26 assistant referees were nominated. I would have assumed, therefore, that each referee was assigned two permanent assistants, and that Amina Gutschi was given her second assignment early because one of the scheduled assistants for either Iuliana Demetrescu or Silvia Gasperotti was unavailable at short notice.
DeleteCarney also is appointed with two different referees (Frappart and Caputi).
DeleteThe two missing ARs are A. Fernandez and Baranowska.
There have been very often changes with assistant referees at Women's EURO, we also discussed on the blog about the reason for that, maybe it's because there are less officials than men's and some federations have strong names, so they are mixed with other nationalities in the appointments.
DeleteOnly 24 AR's are at the tournament. Polish and Andorran AR's both injured and no replacements. So some like Carney and Gutschi will have to do more games than normal.
DeleteAfter seeing France vs England, it is almost remarkable how big the difference is in terms of quality compared to teams like Norway, Finland, Switzerland etc...
ReplyDeleteAbsolutely one of the easiest games to officiate, both teams fully focused on football and nothing to say about the referee.
ReplyDeleteA second appointment can follow for the Italian, but hopefully a more challenging one for her!
Cuadra Fernandez very quick to send Huerta De Aza to the screen, clear foul
ReplyDeleteReally sorry for the Spanish referee, once again unlucky with crucial incidents at big tournaments. We have the second OFR of the tournament, after Edina Alves one, for a foul before a goal scored.
ReplyDeleteIt happened exactly in front of her, the attacker who then gained the possession of the ball made a clear obstruction, not the kind of foul we see very often for an intervention, but this was crystal clear and to be whistled. I think the Spanish was looking too much in the middle of penalty area without having a look at what was happening closer to her, or, you can easily say she was too close...
Video:
https://streambug.org/cv/e800a3
Said that, in this first half I think it was maybe the most challenging game of the tournament so far, in terms of behavior by players.
Probably unpopular opinion but I don't even see a foul there. #7 Iceland picks a bad path for her run that will definitely lead to her crushing into #17 Switzerland. Swiss player using her body to protect her spot without unfair use of arms or legs is completely legit.
DeleteQuite an intense, physical game. Rather not a round performance by Huerta De Aza, especially the foul prior possible 1-0 should have been seen by her on the pitch. But so far no crucial mistakes.

ReplyDeleteEasy game for Kulcsar, good VAR intervention with a tight offside missed…nothing to report.
ReplyDeleteSurely a straight SF candidate, due to her experience and no conflict with her nationality.
28' quite blatant foul + YC missed bi Martincic.
ReplyDeleteThat was missed completely, I'm unsure the one YC was necessary, the reaction to head injuries has been slow/non-existent, and only 2 added after at least 3 times medics have been needed and the general stop/start nature of the match seemed rather low
Delete90+5 2YC. Correct decision, but not convincing looking at the management. Cards were shown very late and after looking after the injured player and beeing confrontated by a teammate... an elite referee can do that better.
ReplyDeleteI don’t see a problem with the management there. Potential head injury is always priority. She was in control of the situation and was always going to produce the second YC
DeleteMartincic should really have called the medical staff immediately without priorly asking the player. It was obvious that the player crashed into the wall with their head, which can have a number of serious implications. Due to the card issued, the player would not even had to leave the pitch after a short treatment, so there was literally nothing to lose.
DeleteSubpar alertness/pitch management skills.
Oliver. No. She hezitated to even call the free kick first. Then an Italian player shouted a couple of times to her, ''It's a red card''. Then she went to the player and showed the card.
Delete90+5 second yellow. For me it’s absolutely wrong. I think it’s a clear tackle and she only wants to take the ball. And very bad management, the signal was late and the card came after she had check the injury.
ReplyDeleteFor me it’s not a clear yellow card maybe even not a free kick aswell
Clear YC for my taste. One can argue e body check in this situation is by nature a reckless action and aside from that is this in my opinion als a SPA scenario in which every also soft foul is worth of a YC.
DeleteAgree with those who said poor management, she looked unsure about wha to do, then checked injured player and received mobbing by Italy, only after that issued second YC...
ReplyDeletehttps://streamin.me/v/c3c00966
In which hotel are the referees accommodated? At the EM 2024 in Germany it was a luxurious hotel in Frankfurt
ReplyDeleteFor me this is not a reckless body check. It's careless, but a spa. If the foul is given, there is no way you can argue awat from a yellow card. Poor management.
ReplyDelete5' For at least the third time this tournament, absolutely no thought of stopping play with a head related injury. It's incredible, and really shouldn't be happening
ReplyDeleteNo OFR when Germany's goal was disallowed by VAR. Does that mean there is a touch on the white player? If there is an interferance, the ref would have to go to the screen?
ReplyDeleteAccording to the info shown in the stadium (according to BBC commentators), the explanation was there was a touch. If there wasn't then yes, it would be subjective so an OFR would be needed (if deemed to be interfering)
DeleteThank. Without the touch I am not sure the player interfers with goalkeeper. She sees the ball all the way.
DeleteAccording to Swedish commentator on Finnish tv YLE (Swedish is co-official language in Finland), UEFA sent out a message to the commentators saying that the German player did indeed touch the ball. Couldn't see anything from the pictures, but there should be a chip in the ball (I think) so it shouldn't be a discussion really. For the record, it would still have been a very clear interference in case of no touch imo
DeleteThis comment has been removed by the author.
DeleteP.S. the question when it comes to interference shouldn't be line of sight but rather "making an obvious action" which she does by (trying) to jump over the ball
DeleteI stand corrected. After consideration I think you are right, although the goal keeper had no chance for the ball imo.
Delete18' Again, we're asking for better from the TV director. The offside was apparently factual as it touched the player, although no good replay to show that. I'm sure the VAR must have seen better evidence however, after a long check
ReplyDeleteVery long checks by Slovenian VAR, as it was for Nations League games a month ago.
DeleteBoth the offside and the penalty changed in free kick to follow.
About the offside, honestly I would dare to say that VAR didn't have better footage to judge it, othwerwise it would have been shown.
Looking only at the offside position, one could assess it as the most significant mistake by an AR so far, but the problem was indeed that it was hard to understand player had touched ball or not...
There's a touch! Thanks to the BBC showing a zoomed in, slowed down replay, there is a deflection. Why oh why could we not have seen that during the game?!
DeleteApparently the replay with snickometer was shown in the stadium at half time, confirming the touch also
DeleteClassic Uefa handball, which was likely outwith the area, but once again, we're not shown the evidence used to make the decision... replays in this tournament (and the CWC) have been abysmal
ReplyDelete53' how many times I saw this kind of very soft penalty, given in serie A.
ReplyDeleteUnfortunately, the Slovenian VAR called the Portuguese referee to an OFR. Attacker is ahead and you have that soft contact... all are assessed as penalties in modern football, I strongly disagree.
those soft penalties often happen because the attacker either suddenly stops their movement or puts out their leg perpendicular to the direction of movement, forcing the defender into making contact. Here, neither is the case. #16 GER just tries to reach the ball while #11 DEN kicks them against their leg. Clear penalty and great VAR work, spotting this nuance.
Delete3 VAR interventions with less than an hour played. Bad day for the Portuguese referee. I think the penalty was a little soft but hard to ignore when at the screen
ReplyDeleteWhat's with the body language after the ofr?
ReplyDeleteNow a goal after a head injury. Should have been stopped
ReplyDeleteAs unfortunate at it is a very promising attack followed the injury so quickly, if the whistle went immediately, it wouldn't have developed as much. It was a very serious injury, play had to stop. I think someone like a Taylor or Mateu Lahoz would have been much more alert
DeleteCould be Campos' only game of the tournament...
ReplyDelete74', finally from VAR Room they decided to show something about crucial decisions...
ReplyDeleteThe VAR check was over 2.5mins, the head injury took at least 3, and the stoppage for the referee's treatment was over 5mins. It's been a very stop start game, plenty of stoppages, and 9 minutes seems, light
ReplyDeleteI don’t understand how pro refs can’t give the correct additional time, which should be the absolute most simple and basic task.
DeleteActually, for a long time of the match, I thought the Portugese did quite well. You cannot blame her for both key decisions in first half, I liked her communication with the players. All decisions beyond goal scoring were correct.
ReplyDeleteBut in my view, we see a very weak VAR work. There is no way that VAR had a perfect angle to evaluate whether the handball was inside or not. It is pure "feeling" without evidence. You cannot overrule an on-field decision simply on guessing that the handball occured "rather outside". For me, penalty should have been confirmed because the contrary could not be proven.
Then, the OFR for GER was fully incorrect. To be honest, it rather seemed like a "compensation" for two VAR decisions against Germany. You cannot invite the referee, who was positioned well, to such a "cheap" OFR. There is a contact, but not every contact is a foul. Attacker was looking to get hit, slowing down her speed and kind of moving towards the defender. Her fall also does not naturally fit to what occurred. Everyone around that saw the replays before OFR thought it was far from enough for a penalty, not even talking about a clear and obvious mistake. When you see the pictures and get the input by the VAR, you probably cannot ignore the contact. The initial mistake has been made by VAR, you should not let the referee go in such a situation.
So, in my view, we saw two crucial VAR mistakes: penalty should have been confirmed, OFR was wrong. And I would not even blame the referee too much.
ITA-ESP: Demetrescu (ROU)
ReplyDeletePOR-BEL: Olofsson (SWE)
Olofsson needs a good performance in this game if she's going to be a name for semis/final. Can't afford mistakes given the weaker game in FRA-ENG.
DeleteAfter Peşu repeating Norway in MD1 and MD3, now Demetrescu will handle Spain for the second time this tournament, after being in charge of Spain-Portugal in MD1… No alternatives available?
ReplyDeleteSloppy appointing
DeleteOloffson hidden path... match with a low profile after a not very good first match.
ReplyDeleteMaybe the will give her that match to have a good performance for later in the tournament.

Peter, you are so funny!! 😉😅
DeleteI really don't understand why it's necessary to appoint the same referee twice for the same team in the group stage. It's stupid, not forward-thinking, and amateurish! What a mess!
DeleteReferees without second game so far:
ReplyDeleteCatarina Campos POR
Ivana Martincic CRO
Maria Sole Ferrieri Caputi ITA
Silvia Gasperotti ITA
Frida Klarlund DEN
Marta Huerta de Aza ESP
Two referees will remain with only one game in group stage (and very likely nothing more). Now, based on performances one should say Campos and Huerta de Aza at moment. Nevertheless, Martincic was not the best in POR - ITA.
I can imagine something like that to complete group stage:
Sweden - Germany Silvia Gasperotti ITA
Poland - Denmark Ivana Martincic CRO
Netherlands - France Frida Klarlund DEN
England - Wales Maria Sole Ferrieri Caputi ITA
I am uncertain about the Poland - Denmark match: I would either expect Ivana Martincic at a 'better' game (if her recently shown performance was sufficient) - or not to see her any more at all at this tournament. An official with her international experience who just returned from officiating the Champions League final for a match that is only about places 3 and 4? On the other hand, there are not many alternatives: Maybe Silvia Gasperotti, who otherwise would perhaps make only one appearance because she is considered the number 2 of her country? Alina Pesu will also get a second game, but Norway - Iceland is similarly meaningless, which might be the reason why she and her compatriot Iuliana Demetrescu have not simply been swapped. Probably UEFA prefered to assign Italy - Spain to a more experienced colleague.
DeleteI agree about Martincic and what you said, I was indeed in doubt just for that (it would be more expected either another important game or nothing, given her experience). Also, possible to see only one of the two Italian with two games.
DeleteWe'll see.
Caputi didn't have a good game in POL-SWE, wouldn't be surprised to see her stay on one GS game.
DeleteRather easy first half for Edina Alves with England clearly better team.
ReplyDeleteCorrectly solved a minor penalty area incident, then an unlucky injury for a Dutch player but absolutely not intentional. No need of issuing any card so far.
3-0 by England, a clear header by Dutch defender was assessed as deflection and the offside confirmed.
ReplyDeleteOne can discuss about that.
Correct decision. The defender has to move quickly backwards and stretch to play the ball with the head. Would not have been deemed offside three years ago.
DeleteThis is one which is clearly correct in law but still I think it's hard for this to ever be accepted by fans and players.
DeleteThe reason for the rule change was obviously in large part due to the famous Mbappé goal in the UNL final in 2021 however I'm not sure that the problem people had with the decision was that García's intervention was uncontrolled, but rather that he was forced to make it in the first place. There has been a lot of similar situation where the ball instead of going to the offside player goes to a player that was onside and in those cases, a lot of people also seems to expect an offside due to the fact that it was the offside player that actually forced the intervention. I'm not saying it would be easy to write a law that fix this issue, maybe the change in consideration for deliberate play was a actually compromise that would at least have eliminate some of these situations.
What I don't like is that we don't see a "deliberate play" anymore, according to the change of rule, all can be assessed as deflection or save. In particular, I think that if defenders join the path of the ball to try to play it, but this is not immediately in their proximity, they should accept the risk of failing and making a mistake. Differently, when directly hit by ball, or clear action under pressure, OK, one should agree with offside...
DeleteAt least, it would helpful to not longer speak of "deliberate play", but replace it by "controllable play" or "play of a controllable ball"- because that's what the instructions are about.
DeleteEngland goal chalked off due to the ridiculous “deliberate play” law. Not the officials fault but IFAB need to find a balance there
ReplyDeletehttps://streambug.org/cv/6bf547
DeleteOffside intervention to allow 1-1 by Wales, AR2. Watching replay I thought about a marginal offside as well, but it was onside. Wouldn't blame that much AR, but signaling a wrong borderline offside is a bit more serious mistake than missing an extremely tight one, for assessment purposes.
ReplyDeleteMinutes later, good YC by Swiss referee for a clear reckless challenge once kicked the ball, she also waited for possible advantage before whistling.
french player should have been YC for poor tackle on Fishlock.referee awards throw in .
ReplyDeleteMissed YC there, but then another correct YC.
DeleteTo follow clear penalty to France, soft holding before and then evident foul from behind.
Poor 1st half by the Swiss referee ,very inconsistent in her decision making
ReplyDeleteOther than the missed YC I do really think that Grundbacher is showing an impressive game. Her personality & management skills are on a high level. Furthermore, her physique is one of the best one’s of all refs.
DeleteHow to be succesful in UEFA refereeing: Own an Italian passport.
ReplyDeleteOlatz Almedo?
ReplyDeleteShe wasnt on the referee list
It's clearly a "promotion" due to the very poor performance once again by Marta Huerta, so instead of giving her two games, the other Spanish will take the second, given also that it will be an unimportant game. Really sorry for Huerta, but her international career has been terrible, one can't remember a referee with so many poor performances at big tournaments in a row... I think it's indeed now the "official change" with Rivera Olmedo. I had already some thoughts this had already happened, but now, it's evident.
DeleteMaybe not respectful for the other reserve referees at the tournament, but indeed some circumstances allowed that. In case of important game (qualification or not), a reserve referee wouldn't have been assigned in the middle...
About Gasperotti, it's similar choice, two teams already qualified, sonorous clash on paper, to start with gaining experience at the "upper" part of Elite category...
Chefren... is this your opinion... or is this confirmed by Uefa?
DeleteMaybe Huerta is just injured, and replaced with the other Spanish? I
It's my opinion, I forgot to clarify that! It can be that Huerta is injured!
