DeleteEskås AR2 Bashevkin is absent and also has barely been refereeing domestically for a long time. He is a family man with other professional pursuits and interests but always performing at a very high level. I believe he might have a special agreement that he covers a small number of games and mostly the important international ones.

DeleteIt’s notable that the third qualifying round now features only Elite referees. Likely a response to last year’s controversies and underwhelming performances — mostly from First Category officials.
ReplyDeleteThis shift adds a layer of “competition.” With just 14 (?) UCL play-off games, there are more referees than slots. A weak third-round showing could cost someone a spot. Though competition is, of course, relative — politics and favoritism still rule. e.g. Italy will get its usual quota.
Vincic is still missing (along with Zwayer). Is the Slovenian enjoying an extended holiday… Before his inevitable wildcard? 😉

DeleteJust watched Malmö - Copenhagen, a slow-paced game where both teams focused on their task. Even if it was not much of a challenge for João Pedro da Silva Pinheiro, I was very impressed by his communication skills, he was in full control from start to finish, being both calm and assertive. Great management from the Portuguese.

Shouldn't be a + or - in the assessment, in my opinion.
Further scrutiny reveals the penalty call by Turpin to be an outstanding one. Without playing the ball, the defender puts his leg across the attacker, preventing him from taking the shot. The French referee read the intentions of the defending player perfectly; the call is excellent and worthy of much praise.

Then, two interesting cautions with regards applying the laws. I'm never against decisions like the first clip below, but it does seem a stretch to deem the holding as 'showing a lack of respect for the game'. The second episode is much more interesting however, and while the YC itself is clearly correct, the restart is a violation of the LotG?

Finally, overall Turpin handled this game with consumate ease and came across as extremely assured in his work (indeed, as one of the best referees in the world).
It will never make sense to me that a substitute or substituted player can do what was done in the last clip and get a yellow card, but anyone else on the bench gets a red card. I don't understand the virtue of that distinction. A substitute or substituted player is not an active participant in the game; yet they get a downgrade on their behavior because they were or could be? It makes no sense and I always have to remind myself that this is the way the Laws are written.

DeleteMaybe he wasn't sure about the effects of the action, it remains a particular situation to be whistled, but honestly one shouldn'd have doubts. Even in case of free kick and no penalty, intervention expected for RC. Looks like a serious mistake by Swiss crew here.

The Slovakian referee at the moment of the foul was busy as you can see from the short replay, in making clear gestures about a previous assessment in penalty area (play on, correct decision) and suddenly this happened when he was not 100% mentally focused. He spotted the foul but he gave free kick and VAR turned it into penalty.
Serdar with very cheap second yellow card if you ask me.Not 100% wrong yellow card but 90% of elite refs would not give it here as it would result in red card.

DeleteI think it's a correct decision for SPA, once you whistle the foul, but maybe foul couldn't have been whistled. Mistake for me if whistled without booking.

DeleteThe second YC should be given for offences which clearly require YC. Yellow card for this offence is doubtful per se. Three defenders are before the attacker. I couldn't have supported such decision. Original opinion of Scandi Ref was correct IMO.

Not watched from first minute and maybe I missed something, however very calm first half, never intense, extremely low pace.
DeleteI noticed two penalty area incidents, first one in 29' - 30', possible hanbdall, arm not in punishable position, correct decision. Then, maybe a more interesting one 3 minutes later, I think very good decision by Jovanovic not to whistle penalty following a duel in penalty area, would have been very soft. VAR in trouble if whistled by referee, should have been supported but in case controversial. In 40' maybe a phantom foul, but referee never really challenged in terms of control of the game.
It looks like the committee picked the right match for his comeback. Teams that (at least in principle) should play fair play, without too much tension and possible incidents.

DeleteInteresting match from Nyberg today. Two possinle penalty moments in the first half, but no action after VAR checks. Two yellow cards for the very passionate Turkish bench. If you look at their heatmap of the Fenebrache trainers, you'll see a lot of activity on the pitch ;)
