ReplyDelete02:14:20 interesting to see Marchetti use Serie A kit not FIFA kit, unfortunately I couldn't watch the game so can't report his performance.
Is it common when they use their own league kit and not the league that invite them or fifa kit?
DeleteIt is strange indeed. Referee should wear the same kit of the league he is about to officiate or alternatively the UEFA / FIFA.
DeleteI think in this specific case, it can be something related to kit supplier, GIVOVA for Italian referee, maybe they can't appear with a different sponsor? And if I'm not wrong, it's Macron for Kazakhstan league at moment?
BW would be nice to know about the performance, maybe after many poor outings in serie A, finally a good one in KAZ today for him?
before the match, local media raise concern about "neutrality" because Marchetti officiated Kairat in UCL R1 this season but I think it's just nonsense and yeah no issues so far after the match, if I'm not missed something.
DeleteGood performance by Marchetti, he handled the game well.
DeleteSoto Grado called penalty, Var call him and penalty has been revoked. Live, i dont see a referee who would not call it live, but after replay obviously it was contact from Real Player. Very good teamwork. Then, Var called offside that was very tight to see, and goal have been deleted. Again, excellent teamwork.
ReplyDeleteNah, the penalty was correct. It's clear tripping that prevents the attacker from taking a shot he had already started to perform. I would call it lack of understanding rather than good teamwork.
DeleteFor the offside are we sure that it's not coming from a barcelona player ?
DeleteI also thought the offside might have come from barca player
DeleteDefinitely not tripping. Seen these situations several times. Kicked his foot instead of the ball. Free kick.
DeleteIn my opinion, it is a clear penalty. The attacker has complete control of the ball, he tried to shoot, the defender puts his leg in the same place without playing the ball. Clear penalty for me.
DeleteNo, correct penalty for me. REA player is the ball carrier. BAR player puts his foot infront of him when he is about the shoot and doesn't get the ball.
DeleteFor me inam fine with revoking the prnalty
DeleteVAR shouldn't get involved in my opinion, one of those which causes debate so VAR should stay with on field decision
DeleteVery good work by Var. Penalty after Ofr, hard to spot live.
ReplyDeleteI will go with my observation of the Soto Grado Performance:
ReplyDelete1. In the last decade, maybe more, the most challenging El Classico in way of the officiating situations.
2. It is showed that CTA decision to appoint Soto Grado was extremely clever
3. I watch Primera officiating a lot of time and this is the first time that I enjoyed in El Classico officiating.
4. Fabulous officiating by officiating team led by Cesar Soto Grado, especially him.Hugh authority, accepted by all parts involved in, with high dose of self-confidence, excellent disciplinary control and technical aspect, also communication on high level. Two OFR, but nobody should have problem with it,becouse these situations was very tough for on field solving. At the end, chapeau for Soto Grado,he showed why he is at least for me No 1 Spanih referee at moment.
I also liked his performance in the big picture. Good control, mainly by radiating calmness, and a lenient line, while punishing the clear fouls and giving the clear cards.
DeleteNot giving the 2CT to Pedro a minute earlier probably was wrong though and the two VAR interventions can't be ignored (debatable, whether he made any mistake in the first situation).
In terms of challenging, I would agree and disagree.
DeleteLast season we had De Burgos and his press conference before match, therefore a lot of pressure and challenging Copa Del Rey Finals.
In terms of Soto Grado, challenging match and satisfied performance.
His delayed whistle is something that maybe annoys players so he can maybe improve in that management.
But in terms of performance, players helped him a lot before the end.
Big scandal in Turkey !!!
ReplyDeleteTürkiye Football Federation President İbrahim Hacıosmanoğlu: "Of the 571 active referees in professional leagues, 371 have betting accounts. 152 of them are actively betting. Starting from today, our Disciplinary Committee will initiate the necessary procedures from today and, in a short period of time, refer them to the disciplinary board and impose the necessary penalties in accordance with the regulations. We have shared the investigations with FIFA and UEFA. Despite the regulations being clear, our referee colleagues have opened accounts in their own names and placed bets."
Yesterday, I watched the FC Twente–Ajax match officiated by Gözübüyük and the Feyenoord–PSV match led by Lindhout. It was fascinating to see two completely different styles of authority. Gözübüyük manages in a very authoritarian way, with limited interaction with players and a somewhat nervous appearance, whereas Lindhout shows calmness, friendliness and a sense of natural leadership. With Gözübüyük, it sometimes feels more like acting than authenticity. Lindhout made two excellent non-penalty decisions, while Gözübüyük missed a obvious handball and was saved by the VAR. If Lindhout were given a bit more trust and opportunities within KNVB/UEFA, he could manage to overtake Gözübüyük, mainly because of his personality.
ReplyDeleteAfter a less-than-stellar season in 2024-25, he's refereeing much better this season! Yesterday, he offciated a great game, and he did really well.
DeleteHowever, I disagree with you. In my opinion, Lindhout is a type Vincic, someone who avoids big decisions. Yesterday, that worked out well, but I've seen matches get derailed because of this before. I found also a little example of this with negative gestures to him yesterday where Lindhout pretended it wasn't there, making this gestures increasing.
I also thought Gozubuyuk refereed well yesterday (and this season), and he's a bit authoritarian, but he's well respected by all the players.

ReplyDeleteIFFHS and their list for the best ref of the year (2025)
An interesting selection of candidates
DeleteSadly, given the news from Turkey, Meler's journey is again in trouble.
ReplyDeleteI think UEFA will now suspend all Turkish referees to be sure about the issue, then they will wait for the investigation for exact names, but very, very long time. Turkish refereeing seems over, however we can't say that there weren't signal in recent times, if compared to past. The situation is very hard for those who are not guilty, but it can't be solved in other ways. Very poor overall picture from the country. And a scandal after another...
Said that, Cakir must consider himself as an extremely lucky man, given the career he had coming from Turkey.. absolutely.. he even did more than what we can see, if the background situation is so poor. Maybe it was better years ago, but still, nothing solid for medium-long time there...
How much credibility do you think can be attributed to the allegations? Is there an actual large-scale betting problem do you think, or maybe this is the new president trying to eliminate his political enemies? Very hard to believe anything coming out of Turkey after years of political drama in the sport. Hopefully, if Meler etc. are innocent, UEFA should prove their innocence very quickly so they can continue to pursue their careers, otherwise it is very unfair what might happen to them.
DeleteWe can certainly say this is a strange situation, because discovering all these referees so suddenly, and in such large numbers, is absolutely unexpected and impossible to predict. It means the situation must have already been completely out of control, but it's still hard to believe that so many people could be involved and that things have become absolutely unmanageable. That said, of course, we can’t really know, the news is being reported, we are just commenting on that, and everything else that comes out needs to be verified.
DeleteSo I feel very sorry for those directly involved; there will surely be many who have nothing to do with it. But clearly, when a federation is weak, even if an accusation is thrown around just to get rid of opponents, these are things that should never happen in any case.
UEFA is forced to suspend all referees from that federation because they can't take the minimun risk of leaving anyone who might later be found guilty.
However, from a strictly technical point of view, I don't understand how it could be possible for all these referees to be betting, because if it's really them placing bets, their names would obviously appear on all the account records (it is reported that they were the owners, not other people...). So there is something that needs to be clarified. I'm not an expert, and I don't claim the right to judge, but of course I’m concerned for all innocent referees, because something like this won't be solved for months and months, and their careers are stopped.
I don't want to get into an overly delicate matter, but weren't a large number of Turkish referees also suspended in 2016, in the months that followed the coup attempt? These betting suspensions smell to me exactly like the Al-Mirdasi affair, an alleged course of action by the accused people which is so absurd as to be unbelieveable.
DeleteI had the same thought about Al-Mirdasi as well. Unfortunately from some countries you can’t necessarily trust what comes out from the authorities there. You have a new TFF president elected last year who apparently wants to be a populist strongman claiming to root out corruption from the governance, and suddenly the week that sports betting allegations are rocking the sports world, this comes out, it definitely smells fishy to me.
DeleteNote that according to this tweet, it seems like an account on a betting site was required to watch second and third league matches for a few years due to a broadcasting arrangement, which explains the high number of referees with accounts. Of course, this would not excuse referees who actually placed bets, if this is true. https://x.com/serdarakcer/status/1982773571673018549?s=46
Fun and games for Danny Makkelie ('Suarez 2.0') in Kuwait yesterday:
ReplyDeletehttps://youtu.be/49Q_FeYvcps?t=5164
He lost the plot a bit in this specific sequence, but overall I would deem the Dutchman's performance in this fiendishly difficult match as good. For those interested, on my small 'dispatches' blog page you can find a full report about the game.

I know, it is only the qualification for a youth tournament. Nevertheless, from an Austrian perspective, I find it very pleasing that Jakob Semler was nominated in 'his' group for what I consider the two most attractive matches, Serbia - Bosnia & Herzegovina and Türkiye - Serbia. I was even more surprised that he recently officiated a U21 qualification game in his first international year in front of more than 4,000 spectators, while no other Austrian was involved there so far.
DeleteQuite strange double appointments for Rouček CZE, Rúsz HUN and Gryckiewicz POL, too.
DeleteNice performance from Frida Mia today, as we have come to expect from her. Nice watch in an exciting game. Since EURO 2025, when I had the opportunity to watch her live for the very first time, I immediately noticed that she was very good, and it was clearly evident, for me, that she possessed a nice presence on the FoP and, of course, a remarkable talent. Naturally, since then, I have been closely following her path. I really like her style for sure and the way she is in the FoP, she has a very distinctive style and assured demeanor...— as one would expect, since then, she has rightly earned and secured a very high place on my list, among my fav women refs for sure. For me, she continues to prove herself very reliable for these kind of very important decisive matches, like...in a way, high-stakes, decisive encounters. So, a very good appointment and very nice trust from the Committee for sure. Finally, I would also like to congratulate the replacement of the FO for Caroline Lanssens. I was pleased to see her on the big stage today alongside with Frida - in a way, in such a significant fixture...

I don't think Viktor Kassai will observe Istvan Kovacs who holds not only Romanian but also Hungarian citizenship. As an Austrian, I find your prediction for Sebastian Gishamer interesting: due to the current table standings, Benfica - Leverkusen could be an opportunity for a debut. However, I wonder whether Björn Kuipers would actually be "required" for that: Gishamer was last observed by Vladimir Sajn, possibly with a view to a debut in the Champions League. But with what background should he immediately be observed again by a commission member? He is unlikely to be promoted to Elite Referee in January. When I think about which referees were nominated for the U17 World Cup, I get the impression that even potential new candidates for the EURO and the Olympic Games 2028 were already scouted.
DeleteHard to find a good alternative for Liverpool-Real though. E.g. Peljto and Mariani had one of the teams on MD1, Turpin on MD2. And it's unlikely to have one of the MD3 referees again there (due to the observer appointed earlier). Maybe Pinheiro is the solution then.
DeleteBenfica-Leverkusen seems too big for a debut IMO. So I rather expect a promotion candidate (Sozza on fast track?) or a candidate for a final (Peljto maybe?).
I also have the feeling that Benfica - Leverkusen is perhaps too "big" for a debut at Estádio da Luz. The league table situation would allow it, though. On the other hand, this duel is about a preliminary decision on who has the chance to rise into the top 24 and who already has to worry about the knockout stage. Even if the unwritten historical rule no longer exists, I would also not expect an Austrian at a game with a German team.
DeleteObservers for WC qualifiers have been appointed.
ReplyDeleteAmong others, Marinus Koopman will be at Italy - Norway.
A regular Elite is expected there, but quite sure a less important game than the previous of the group involving the teams for qualification.
Could be Zwayer.
Would it be too crazy to have Oliver there?
DeleteI mean, Real-Juve was over 7 years ago and he has done Italian club teams again.
Zwayer surely is possible unless he is needed in a more important game. Gil Manzano maybe, if a step lower is seen as sufficient.
Reviewing the observers, the only one of "weight" IMO is Rizzoli in Luxembourg-Germany…Vitor Melo Pereira in the crucial Scotland-Denmark, Marciniak seems the most likely option there.
DeleteAbout Gil Manzano for Italy, in reality I think he would be even in "worse" position than Oliver because you all remember the famous Ukraine - Italy. I think he can't handle again a decisive game of the national team...

I expect psg vs bayern : pinheiro because mariani get tough match for match day 1
DeleteMy argument would be vice versa: I don't expect Pinheiro for such a big game, because it will be his first CL game this season (and he hasn't any CL top game experience).
DeleteBut both are possible, I think.
I wanted your opinions as well about Inter-Fiorentina.
ReplyDeleteReferee was Sozza. Solid game overall. 2 situations caught my interest however:
1- Around min 54, a hold by fiorentina player on Inter's player in the surface, a VAR check happened, but they deemed the contact was not big it seems, I would have called a penalty there.
2- Penalty for Inter minute 87, a 2nd YC was given and a red card, I wonder if that should have been a straight red card.
I am calling Chefren for the clips ( sorry again, I don't know where to find the clips, otherwise I would upload them myself). Would like to see your opinions guys.
Here the clips:
Delete54' https://streambug.org/cv/f146e1
86' https://streambug.org/cv/d0b301
It was a challenging decision for VAR Davide Ghersini in the first incident, as he was in my opinion quite unsure about what to do (very long check). In the end I think this was a mistake because the action on attacker is very evident. Once again, if in UEFA games most or even all referees wouldn't have issues in assessing this one as punishable action, it's hard in Italy, where there is always high thresold about holdings. They are not seen as clear penalties and there must be always "more" to call them. Here you can say that the argument by VAR was the arm on the shirt of defender, but in my opinion irrelevant action if compared to what defender did. I'm sure without this, VAR would have invited the referee to rewatch. But still, a penalty to be given here.
86': it is a correct decision to give YC once whistled, you can say without doubts that defender tries to go for the ball, but then he hits opponent, so a genuine attempt in a DOGSO scenario inside the box, and YC (second for the player involved and so RC). For me, you can't say that defender wanted only to bring down attacker... and, like many similar scenarios, attacker is aware and he makes everything to kick ball before and to be in the path of defender.
More generally about Sozza, he is now in a rather good (but not excellent) period, being back as better from some poor times, however in the end he never gives the idea of a very top referee, he refrains from taking some decisions and the physical condition in my opinion is not at very high level. Nevertheless, for the current Italian standard, fairly good and indeed among the best referees when he is in steady times.
Well if Inter has not won there, then all eyes would have been on Italian Comitee and the way refs treat Inter.
DeleteEven tho they won, missed penalty there, last week controversial penalty given against them, there is also last season when penalty vs Roma was not given and so on...
One could even make doubts whenever refs are handling Inter's matches, surprise, surprise, mistakes happening against Interall the time.
One thing is sure;if Mourinho was Inter's coach ,this decisions against them would be heard all over the world.
And about Sozza yesterday;lenient, modern approach, allowed plenty in 1st half then game got easier once Inter scored.
agree that now, two games in a row, where there are mistakes, so I don't know how they gonna handle it in the media, the good thing is that chivu has not complained much after the napoli game, but still, that's why they appointed Sozza to avoid problems, but they had a new controversy.
Deleteand again thanks chefren for the clips, I just don't have a website where I can find the full matches afterwards, otherwise would have uploaded them.
