After the first two matchdays, a change in the appointment strategy for the Women's Champions League can be observed. We don't see anymore mixed teams of assistant referees from different countries, instead, the entire refereeing team is usually from the same nation. This is probably because, with the introduction of VAR from this stage of the competition, things need to be handled in a different manner. So far, we have only the Finnish assistant with Olofsson, who has been appointed both on this and last week, and she and the Spanish referee Marta Huerta are the only two who have officiated two matches. Seemingly some new names, Diakow and Rusta, but both already had made their debut in this phase. The Polish now belongs to Talents and Mentors 2025, while the Albanian has been included in WC preselection.
ReplyDeleteThe Finnish assistant, Levälampi, lives in Sweden and now judges Swedish series, so in that sense the setup follows the same pattern as in other arrangements, there are no mixed teams
DeleteMichalina Diakow isn't first time at this stage of Champions League, her debut was at match Olympique Lyon-Galatasaray last year, first matches for Rusta, Pachtova and Bockova ;)

ReplyDeleteFive penalties whistled so far in today's games: four of them given after OFR.
Crucial for Huerta in Oslo (handball in very last minute of game), two penalties by Martincic, first OFR second whistled directly by her, another penalty in Projkovska game (handball, in this case one should wonder why so long stay at monitor...) and penalty as well in London for the Polish referee.
Let't say, it doesn't seem a good statistic.

I think all would have assessed this one as YC for reckless, but then given serious injury I think VAR checked careully and discovered that action by right leg on the tackle, I must admit I had missed it as well, that justifies the red card, even though it's absolutely accidental.
A very brave call by VAR officials in a situation in which one can't absolutely blame the referee, impossible to see and to think about that, you always give YC for a scene like this.

DeleteI must say even if ball was played before, that's a very reckless action with unnecessary force. It resulted on a dangerous challenge on the opponent. Correct second YC for me, even mandatory. I'm just not convinced by how Antoniou showed it with a certain delay after having whistled foul.

I imagine on the first RC, opinions will be very split. Could one say that there is excessive force from the knee down onto the ankle? Yes. Does intent matter? No. But I imagine so many would be feeling that football doesn't want a RC here, and this is incredibly harsh for something so accidental and unfortunate. Do I think the referee's call is a clear and obvious error? No. Do I think the flourish of the red could have been much more sympathetic? Absolutely. I'm not liking any of the soft skills there...

It is rather unclear what Frappart had decided on the pitch, UEFA this time doesn't report in detail about the VAR involvement, but it seems original decision was goal (you can see her indicating the midfield before VAR long check). If so, then VAR had just to check whether they had or not contrary evidence that ball didn't cross the line, and I agree, there isn't evidence. But it stays as controversial because it's possible that ball didn't cross entirely the line. Nothing was shown in this regard, at least during the game. VAR had to check also the possible offside before the goal, and this was shown as ONSIDE.
I think that more expected field decision here was NO GOAL and maybe VAR would have confirmed that as well, but it's sad to see that, despite of VAR introduction at this stage, a very crucial and decisive incident happened in a game, will stay as unclear decision.
