DeleteI for one will be very sad to see Jug drop off the list. A solid and dependable referee who whenever I got to watch him live or on TV always delivered a solid performance. Hopefully he carries on domestically but I admit my knowledge of Slovenian domestic refereeing is nil.

DeleteIn my opinion, appointments involving German referees and Greek clubs (here Stegemann in PAOK vs. SK Brann) should be avoided as Greek federation bring German referees for biggest games for quite some time.

DeleteThe fact that UEFA is backing Lindhout here is a strong signal that it finds the situation in Türkiye (and the way local referees are treated) unacceptable. UEFA is actually showing some backbone for once, which is noteworthy. And rightly so, because bad behaviour sets a precedent. Clubs shouldn’t get a free pass to tear referees apart after a loss.

I’m only now realizing that Sebastian Gishamer is being assisted by an Italian VAR/AVAR. What could be the reason for this, after he recently had an Austrian VAR/AVAR at his Champions League debut, both of whom, to my knowledge, made no mistakes?
ReplyDeleteDi Bello and Chiffi are already in Nyon due to their CL games. Therefore it is more efficient to use him again than to bring in a (or two) Austrian VAR.
DeleteOn the other hand, for Gishamer's game in Qarabag, the VAR was in Azerbaijan, therefore they used two officials, who weren't needed in Nyon that week.

Potentially wrongly cancelled goal for alleged foul by the attacker whistled by Beaton in Lille-Dinamo around 8'. VAR didnt intervene.
ReplyDeleteIt's unfortunately a very common situation, if there is even a little contact, VAR is completely useless and won't intervene.

ReplyDeleteWell an adequate first half from Gishamer. Nothing excellent to report but nothing terrible. Has opted for a fairly lenient approach which again has created one or two inconsistencies. Fitness and positioning good throughout. Much similar to when I watched him in the CL a few weeks back.
First Half:
3' Incorrect GK given for CEL.
7' Good man management to diffuse handbags at a corner.
25' Missed YC for FEY player for reckless challenge. Opted for a warning but was incredibly late and should have been punished with a YC.
39' Correct YC for CEL #41 for a late reckless challenge but inconsistent to the incident on 25'.
41' Correct warning to CEL manager for repeatedly being out of technical area.
Awful to see Jug and his lenient style
ReplyDeleteA slight push by Samu (Porto) on Dante (Nice), Dante stumbling and his foot catches Samu's one. Jug awards a free-kick to Nice, but Borosek intevenes, calls Jug to watch the whole incident again, and the ref. changes his mind and awards a penalty-kick to Porto. An unnecessary intervention and a not detemined enough referee, who should have stood his ground and reject VAR's recommendation.

IMO, Dabanovic performance wasn’t perfect but globally very good with a foul detection level generally high (perhaps one or two issue with possible different but not mistaken interpretation) and discipline handling on concrete and effective basis. Also consideting his superb phisical form, I liked him.

Summary:
Overall a satisfactory performance from Mr Gishamer. For me got better as the game went on and in the end there will be no controversies regarding this performance. Fitness and positioning were superb and made his decisions effectively respected throughout. In the first half did come across as slightly inconsistent due to his lenient approach but as he firmed up towards the later stages of the game got the right balance of consistency. A respectable night's work for Mr Gishamer and one that will allow for further tests and developments.

In Red Star-Pafos it was much more DOGSO situation - last played comitted foul on 30 meters and the ball was going towards the edge of PK area - only YC was shown to Pafos player. This is 2 times clearer SPA than that, but RS player got RC.

ReplyDeleteA strong first half performance for me by Lindhout in Glasgow. Strong authoritive body language blended with softer elements have worked brilliantly throughout the first half resulting in consistency and cautions only when absolutely necessary. The VAR referral was correct and no blame can be placed at Lindhout as he's looking through a crowd of players and in real time the touch of the ball to the arm wasn't clear. Good work and hopefully it continues.

ReplyDeleteFor me rather a wrong decision by French referee in Belgrade, not a DOGSO, but SPA. Very long distance and not central counterattack, you can't be sure about the OGSO. However, I think VAR was correct in staying silent, it's not a clear and obvious mistake. One can accept red card, but very harsh and at the real border. YC more appropriate.
To add, the scene made by fouled player, who tried to influence the referee, but no argument here, the card was given only for the DOGSO and not the kind of foul.
For me, DOGSO seems the better decision:

Yes, only after quite a long run, but at this level of football we can be sure that player wouldn‘t have had problems with that run. 59' VAR review for Violent Conduct. YC was given initially to BRA #10 for adopting an aggressive attitude. Upgraded to VC after looking at the screen for head motion to head, headbutt style offence.
69' Clear missed corner by AR1, throw in given which led to BRA goal.
77' Correct YC for BRA #77 for SPA.
80' Correct no penalty call for alleged handball by RAN player.
90+5' Correct 2nd YC for reckless use of arms by RAN #10.
90+6' Correct YC for BRA #2 for delaying the restart.
Summary:
Well in summary this performance from Lindhout will be incredibly subjective depending on your view of the key incidents. Some will say this was a top performance, some will say it was an average and some will say that it was poor. For me this was a good performance with areas of improvement. The second half especially was particularly challenging with a number on key incidents to assess and situations of players throwing themselves to the floor to try and buy free kicks and for the most part he displayed a consistent approach throughout.
Firstly his fitness and positioning were excellent throughout and contributed to his effective decision making for the most part. Technically was good for the most part with a couple of minor errors but most were understandable and supportable. Two VAR reviews in one game can often mean that a referee has missed major incidents but I do have a degree of sympathy on both. The first one is impossible to be spotted live due to the crowd of bodies and speed that ball was played in and was a a good intervention from Van Boekel. The second review for the BRA red card for VC is a tough one as in real time it's difficult to assess given the referee and AR2's position if it is VC or not and the RAN players delayed reaction added to the complexity. YC at the time was understandable but a correct referral from Van Boekel again to upgrade to RC.
Overall a solid night's work from Lindhout in at times a difficult environment but certainly far from the kind of performance that you'd hope to put in if you have aspirations of Elite.
I observed Minakovic tonight.
ReplyDelete1. Excellent Criteria seted up from start of the match, and remains unitl the end. Very good foul detection with good disciplinary control, only two YC tonight, both deservedly showed, with excellent no calls especially in penalty area.
2. For me, supportable no VAR intervention about red card( no one can blame the referee becouse it was behind him), head contact was normal body motion when player is in sprint, and head contact was direct consequence of that.
3. One Var intervention for removing the Utrecht goal, hard to spot on field. Apparently from that, strong performance of Minakovic assistants.
4.Excellent body language,with great self confidence and natural authority to lead the game,trusted by players.
Conclude: Strong performance from Minakovic. Expect to see him in CL GS match this year, and if continiue like this, Elite Category in January 2027.
Honestly it's hard and misterious to understand how a referee with such a old management style and such a lacking physical and athletic approach like Beaton can referee at international levels today in LIL-GNK…

As for the match in Milan: is it possible that Turpin immediately gets a big one after missing the last round (as compensation)?
(And before our friend AAY joins the conversation: I’m not expecting Pinheiro there — those shoes are still a bit too big for him, but who knows in 1-2 years).
I think Kovacs isn’t an option for RMA-MCI because he already refereed Real against Liverpool and, if I remember correctly, he also officiated the last head-to-head meeting between these two teams.
DeleteTrue. I forgot he refereed Liverpool–Real on 4 November. Not sure if the Refcom cares, but it’s definitely avoidable. Then he would be ruled out for both top matches.

Inter–Liverpool: Vincic, (or Zwayer?)
Letexier has already handled Liverpool and Inter, but he’s certainly an option for Real–City. And with him in the middle it’s guaranteed to be entertaining anyway. But Turpin could also get it, although it would be a strange policy to first sideline a referee and then reward him with a massive showdown. But with someone of Turpin’s reputation, it’s possible.
An Italian (Guida, Massa) seems a bridge too far for Real–City?
I expect Turpin for one of those two duels, and the rest is very difficult to predict because Rosetti is clearly unpredictable

Perfectly normal to split appointments between referees on two matchdays - although it is done less strictly than in the past.
For Real-City, I also would go with Turpin.
For Inter-Liverpool, I guess someone more surprising like Peljto, Schärer or Gil Manzano.
Vincic clearly an option for Inter Liverpool after a solid display in last UCL game. Real City could go to Turpin/Letexier even though Turpin had the game last year. Also, Marciniak could also have Inter Liverpool.

About Jug, if he has planned to retire, I'm sure committee will find a way to make him appear again on MD6, maybe even as main referee, so let's wait before a final comment on him (and there would be many things to say, indeed, about a more than particular career over the years).
As I wrote at the moment - Jug has awarded a free-kick to Nice after Satu's slight nudge getting Dante off-balance. There was no "clear and obvious mistake", and VAR shouldn't have intervened.
DeleteI agree. Never a clear error IMO. Also the focus on the OFR was completely on the second contact, which seems to be a foul and therefore penalty (I agree with that). But I think they should have also evaluated whether the previous slight nudge was a foul, which they called on field.

Maybe difficult but I think he could have anticipated the visual control of the players, instead of, as one can argue from the video footage, following the ball and focusing on the middle of penalty area when the incident had already happened. You can see from his point of view in the video, he had a chance to see it, due to a rather OK positioning, but he didn't see the players as priority. However, it's always difficult with handballs.

Correct call by Van Boekel. However, we should do something against player who simulate in this way. This was just a touch, of course one must punish it with red card, but it's ridicolous what opponent does, in order to "highlight" it to the officials.

A correct decision due to the movement the player makes after touching opponent with arm, but maybe Dutch referee unsure at first glance, you can see he whistled foul and he didn't take the card immediately after that, maybe he wanted to check closely, this is something that can help you in understanding sometimes referees tend to elaborate (maybe too much?) decisions, without taking them directly once whistled.
I think that the Dutch showed significant progress if we compare him to the old referee seen at the famous Under 21 tournament, but how long he has still to recover to get more credit. I think in the end he can build a career as rather "regular" Cat. 1 from a major country like NED is, but nothing more.

As far as I'm concerned, the Austrian referee in this match fully confirmed the impressions from his previous outings. He is very solid in taking decisions, he makes clear and firm calls with no hesitation, and that's no small thing. However, he seems to lack a little something in terms of alertness in prevention. Just look at the clip at 50’, where he sometimes "pauses" himself for a moment (as seen in some of his earlier matches as well) and doesn't do much to prevent potential conflicts between players, especially when play is stopped. In my view, he should aim to be a bit more reactive in this area. Apart from that, his general style seems quite well-defined.
UEFA has already published the delegates for MD6, but not the observers — so maybe they’re keeping those under wraps again.
ReplyDeleteWhat stands out immediately is the presence of three German delegates. Delegates are sometimes assigned as a form of compensation for countries with little referee representation, so this could hint that Zwayer will be off (and Siebert still injured?).
There are also two Dutch delegates — usually a sign we won’t be seeing any of their referees. Absence of Gozubuyuk is a mystery.

Example: MD4 — no Dutch referee, yet two delegates and an observer. Same thing happened last season when the Netherlands had no ref in the knock-out stage. Or with Switzerland when Schärer was injured. And I could list dozens more cases. It’s politics. UEFA tries to keep countries satisfied.
