  1. Sören Storks has been assigned after the penalty in Milan.
A signal? With only this competition available, it is surely a specific choice so in case good news for the German VAR!

    1. You can also read it as a demotion, since Taylor is also among the appointed officials after Brugge vs Barca…

  2. Taylor at Conference League? Is it a farewell?
    'Punishment' for Schärer?

  3. Not a punishment, Schärer just has been back in the Swiss league after injury like 2-3 weeks ago, so it more seems like a test.

  4. What did Taylor do to deserve this, did he make some kind of big mistake?

  5. Anthony Taylor in the Conference league? This is quite shocking for a referee of his calibre. If he is being punished for any mistake he might have made then maybe he won't be given any matches to officiate altogether instead of giving him what many of us would consider a low profile match. As for Scharer I think his situation is more understandable given he had been out for a while due to I jury

There is only one possible explanation IMO: Sending the message, nothing else

  6. Football isn’t black and white. Grey-area decisions are part of the game, and sometimes they decide matches. That’s exactly what happened in Brugge vs Barcelona. Taylor had two genuinely difficult situations to judge and used VAR twice. Both calls were controversial, yes — but also perfectly defensible. He could not have prevented these situations. This is football.

Yet Taylor ends up in the Conference League. Once again, Rosetti’s Referees Committee is losing the plot. Taylor couldn’t win here: had he decided differently, in Brugge’s favour, the controversy would have been exactly the same. He’s effectively being “punished” simply because unavoidable grey-area calls influenced the result.

Meanwhile, referees like Mariani, Zwayer or Turpin can make blatant mistakes (corrected by VAR) and still show up again in the Champions League — as long as no one makes enough noise afterwards.

So who is actually in charge? UEFA and Rosetti? Or the clubs, the headlines, and TV analysts who don’t always know the laws? Some referees just always seem to avoid the storm. But Taylor was just unlucky here.

    1. The point you made about other officials is where the entire discussion about referees can be very frustrating. No one is above mistakes but if there are repercussions for certain mistakes then it should apply to everybody. Some referees make bigger mistakes and get away with it while others are harshly punished for similar or lesser mistakes. Halil Meler has been completely ostracized and left in the cold because of what only God knows, yet others keep getting officiating assignments game after game.

    2. You raise a few absolutely good points.
In principle, one can expect the absolute top referees to officiate their matches as error-free as possible. The fact that mistakes keep happening is simply part of the game. The real problem is how Rosetti deals differently with referees when mistakes occur. There are a few “chosen ones” who seem to be able to get away with almost anything and for whom mistakes have little to no consequences. This certainly includes some Slovenian referees, all Italian referees, and a few others as well. Rosetti may have been a good referee, but he apparently lacks leadership qualities. The most important thing in his position is that referees know they are trusted — but how is someone like Irfan Peljto supposed to feel that trust when he knows that after the next mistake involving the wrong club (e.g. PSG, Madrid, Italian teams), he will once again not be considered for a while?

I already wrote this some time ago: by 2027 at the latest, it will be time for Rosetti to step down together with Ceferin.
It is time for a complete reset, which also means that Rosetti’s current colleagues (Kuipers, Sajn, Carballo) should step aside and make room for new leadership.
There would be plenty of candidates, such as Webb, Brych, Çakır, or Kassai.
