  2. Is there anything about promising young UEFA referees (10 men and 4 women) who have been assigned mentors?

  3. Marciniak to referee on Monday.. very likely out of UCL first leg

    1. I think he will officiate the second-leg match between Paris Saint-Germain and Bayern Munich.

  4. I have seen some speculations on this blog about whether the two Scandinavians, Nyberg and Eskås, could even get a UCL semi final however appointments suggest that won't be the case.

Nyberg referees the Stockholm derby on Sunday between Djurgården and Hammarby, however he does so without his normal AR2 Andreas Söderkvist who is appointed to a different game on Monday.

Eskås himself is without appointment this weekend, however his normal AR1 Jan Erik Engan is appointed for the late Sunday game between Lillestrøm and Bodø/Glimt.

I think the Norwegian could at least be appointed in the UEL, while the Swede will likely be without appointment this week

  6. I also believe that Marciniak will officiate a second-leg semifinal, to give him a bit more time since he has only recently returned to officiate. And of course, not hard to think of Paris Saint-Germain, which, between the two semifinals, is always the prominent one.
That said, regarding the Nordic referees, thanks to Elliot for the post.
I have noticed something: even though both of them, and as I mentioned before, in my opinion the Norwegian made significant progress, there still seems to be a certain gap, not huge but still noticeable in some respects, compared to the other top elite referees. The main evidence is that they are used up to a certain level, but they still don't receive those 100% prestigious appointments.
I hope I will not attract criticism for this, because I often spoke about Nyberg in the past and have been accused of being harsh on him. I'm not harsh, I can even say that I like him as a referee, but I notice a certain lack of concentration at times in penalty-area decisions. Overall, in the matches he has officiated, especially in key decisions, everything else has gone smoothly, but as an elite referee, that's the standard you are expected to meet. Forgive me, but something has been missing in terms of decision-making, and overall he doesn't seem to have reached the level of the very top elite referees.
As for Eskas, as I said, I think he has taken some steps forward recently, slightly overtaking the Swedish in my view, even though the latter has officiated a FIFA final. But nowadays we know what most of those FIFA competitions have become; that's not a criticism of the Swedish referee, but rather an observation about FIFA.
In any case, even with Eskas, for some reason I still don't see him as comparable to the others at moment. Maybe he will go to officiate the Europa League final, which would be fine, but even a Europa League semifinal would still feel like too little, if you understand what I mean. The real big step this season would have been a Champions League semifinal. These are the matches that really mean something for those who are appointed, apart from particular circumstances that can always happen.
Let's see, these are just impressions I wanted to share. In any case, these referees will certainly have many more opportunities ahead of them.
And, I'm ready to be proven wrong by the upcoming appointments. :)

    1. You think UEFA will give Marciniak a 2nd leg semi final with Bayern after what happened the last time ?

      Delete
    2. I thought the same thing. The Bavarian board didn't take well to his and his assistant's mistake against Real Madrid in 2024. So much so that in the European Championship of that same year, Marciniak was banned from refereeing German national team matches because of what happened at the Bernabéu.

  7. There has been a lot controversy in the QF, this reminds me of year 2024 where Rosetti had to improvise and was forced to use Marcinaik in the semi and final.

Add the nationality of teams in semi’s and it is very difficult. I expect after all commotion Rosetti will not take any risks in the semi’s. I foresee experienced names like Marciniak and Mackelie, Mariani (all neutral), and maybe 4th name Hernanddz or Schaerer

  9. The referees head for Serie A and Serie B, Gianluca Rocchi received a notice of investigation yesterday for "complicity in sports fraud".
According to what has been learned by the Agi news agency, the investigation led by Milan public prosecutor Maurizio Ascione reportedly concerns the 2024–2025 season and, in particular, certain incidents that occurred in the VAR room in Lissone during matches. Rocchi is said to have put pressure on the VAR and AVAR officials.

The reference is, in particular, to what allegedly happened on March 1, 2025, during Udinese–Parma, when the three officials present in Lissone were discussing a possible handball in the penalty area during that game.
"It doesn't seem outside the body silhouette to me, look at the position of the arm, it seems on the body", says VAR Daniele Paterna, who appears inclined to rule out awarding the penalty. At a certain point, however, he suddenly turns around, looks back, and it can clearly be seen that he states: "It's a penalty."
The hypothesis is that Gianluca Rocchi allegedly stood up to "knock" several times on the glass of the VAR room where Paterna and Sozza were, in order to get their attention, after which they in turn would call the referee for an on-field review.
This case is included in a complaint filed by Domenico Rocca, which had already been dismissed from the Italian refere's association.

  10. Fulham vs Aston Villa: Is Oliver disallowing Fulhams goal for a foul on the gk? Is this really a foul in the Premier League? This is something Arsenal have been doing all season, so I dont see why this was given when similar situations havent been called throughout the season...

    ReplyDelete
  11. Premier League early kickoff Fulham v Aston Villa, Oliver was having a brilliant game with flawless display but he disallowed Fulham second goal on field and VAR checked the incident and decided ( referees' call) around 63' minute , IMO there was no foul at the goalkeeper

Rochdale score in added time to go into 1st place (big pitch invasion follows) York then equalise right at the end to go back into 1st and get promoted (Rochdale now in playoffs) The goal was given by AR2 and looked to be over the line with the replays being shown at the end https://x.com/DAZN_NationalLg/status/2048033981099028564
