    1. I watched the game. Overall, it was good performance by Siebert, along the same lines as Arsenal-Atletico (the second half mostly normal difficulty, but the first half was quite challenging yesterday). I think the German referee has earned himself a period of rest after this week! It will be interesting to see who is appointed to Al-Nassr vs. Al-Hilal in a few days time, Peljto my prediction.

    2. Maybe that will need "stronger" and more elite ref.
1st match was handled by Letexier, maybe this time we get someone like Kovacs or someone from other federation like Escobar or Herrera.

  4. It is of Course Hernández Hernández who will officiate el clásico. Javier isglesias will be on Var.

  5. If someone can post a clip with the situation from min 19' in Stuttgart vs Bayer Leverkusen - Tapsoba vs Stiller in Bayer's own penalty box. It looked like a clear foul with the follow through leg and a missed intervention by VAR Dankert.

Then a good VAR intervention in min 45+2 when Tapsoba again committed a clear foul in the box, completely missed by referee Schroeder.

    1. Yep,but very lenient Schroder, especially with dealing with Tapsoba who had license to do anything in this match.

First incident, a situation that happens very often, AR is there, very close, but he looks at ball, he misses what he could easily spot.
Are such challenges that difficult to spot?

  8. A VAR rejection in Motherwell v Hearts in min 67', sent to the monitor but McLean rejected the referral for me it is a clear penalty.

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. For me it’s not a penalty from the angles shown. Var shouldn’t call McLean over as for me it’s not a clear and obvious error, there isn’t enough evidence to overturn the original decision. Very minimal contact.

  9. Today, in the CAF Confederation Cup final between Zamalek and USM Algiers, the Mauritanian referee Dahane Beida delivered a poor performance. How can a weak referee like this be selected for the World Cup? I believe that some changes will occur.

    1. World cup will be absolute chaos in referee level and with today’s media they will talk more about the referees than the actual teams.

    1. I just don't see any justification for a penalty there. Firstly it's never a clear error.

Second, while there are 2 hands on his back there is no pushing motion. I wouldn't want to see a foul given even if that incodent had been in the opposite box immediately prior to the goal but giving a penalty for that is totally wrong for me

    2. Absolutely not agreed. The knee into the back is obvious, along with a slight push with the arm. Given the goal scored at the other end, it’s normal for VAR to intervene and call the referee over, who then makes the right decision after seeing an unnecessary knee that wasn’t in his field of vision. Good decision by Beida here in my opinion, even though I’m generally not a fan of his refereeing.

    3. So, in reality, it is not even clear why this OFR was made. It seems to be for a handball, but from all the footage this cannot be identified clearly anyway. However, the most evident element to me, looking at the images, is the knee into the player's back, which is certainly punishable, and it seems to be the only really clear aspect.
That said, for a situation like this, not every VAR would have recommended an on-field review, especially in a circumstance like this where you are disallowing a scored goal in order to go back and award a penalty. I am not saying that a different decision necessarily had to be made, but it has to be a clear and obvious mistake making all people agree, and many officials would probably have spent much longer reflecting on the issue.
Having said that, I can only emphasize once again that today, and I agree with the comment above by VG, which in my opinion may contain some excessive elements but is not entirely wrong, refereeing is in a very chaotic era.
This World Cup in the United States arrives at a moment when the hostility between fans and the refereeing world has reached levels never experienced before. Above all, people understand absolutely nothing about refereeing and all the dynamics behind it.
If even we here on this blog, and I say this once again not out of arrogance, but simply because it is true, can consider ourselves more knowledgeable than average on the subject, often understanding certain decisions, recognizing the mistakes that are made even in matches at other levels, and so on, then at some point one has to ask how the average fan could possibly understand what lies behind refereeing decisions, for example when an OFR like this takes place, considering that everyone may ultimately have a different interpretation of what is a clear and obvious mistake, what type of foul was committed, and so on.
If we look at it from a certain perspective, we may have reached a point of no return for refereeing. Still, I don't want to sound like an extremist, but I hope I have explained my thoughts clearly.
VAR has certainly helped in some respects, because with genuinely clear and obvious mistakes, black-and-white situations such as offside or not offside, an obvious penalty with a clear touch, step-on-foot incident, and so on, then fine, the technology works. But regarding all the other situations, in my opinion it really becomes worse than navigating in the dark.
I also observe that, in terms of world refereeing, the gap between the European elite, meaning our confederation, and the rest of the world has become even more evident. In my opinion, African, Asian, and to some extent North American referees, though perhaps not too much in the case of North Americans because of the home advantage and the World Cup context, as well as South American referees too, paradoxically even the South Americans, will end up being used almost as secondary figures. I believe Pierluigi Collina will assign almost all the major matches to European referees, because overall the situation is truly a big chaos. Then, of course also UEFA referees can make mistakes, I'm not saying the contrary, but at least one can understand some decisions, while in other cases it's very hard.

    4. Due to the yellow card immediately brandished (after the review) to the defender who committed the foul, it seems as if Beida was calling the supposedly reckless knee to the back, not the handball question.

I agree with the comments above, that this is not a clear and obvious foul, though it could have been whistled live. There are questions about amount of force and normal contact.

I'm not sure what to make of the very-predictable chaotic scenes that followed, in which the referee was mobbed by almost the whole Zamalek team and the penalty was not taken until several minutes later. According to CAF's match report, it appears the red card shown was direct, rather than a second yellow. Beyond this, it seems that none of the Zamalek players were sanctioned for dissent (the goalkeeper who receives the yellow card is the Alger one!). It is rather quite difficult to criticize the referee during such a moment, considering the state of African refereeing and the lack of support and protection for referees; however, one wishes for stronger action towards the team acting in a disgraceful manner. More yellow cards could have been shown: for dissent, and later, for delaying the restart of play.

While I think Beida is a good referee, who should be capable of challenging matches at the upcoming 2026 World Cup in North America, one must acknowledge the continued struggles of Video Assistant Refereeing within the CAF confederation. I think this area, more so than refereeing on the field of play, is where the lesser confederations (including, in due part, the AFC) present concerns.

  12. An excellent first half from Nick Walsh in Celtic v Rangers. Strong performance and well managed throughout. Set the bar for contact and fouls fairly high and has been very consistent throughout. Strong public warning in 8' which on another day may have been a caution. Two correct YC's for reckless challenges one for each team and had tried to let the game flow where possible. A really strong first half and for me the quality between him and rest of the officials grows each game and is thoroughly deserving of his UEFA elite status.

    1. Generally agree - full control throughout so far. Calm but strong body language too helping to sell his decisions.

I think some discussion about the yellow card to Celtic #2. There are definitely some arguments for a red here - lunge, contact with studs above the ankle. Quite lenient from Walsh I think.

    2. An absolutely outstanding performance from Nick Walsh! But now who will referee the midweek games? And of course a potential title deciding game on the final day between Celtic and Hearts!
      I predict:
      Motherwell V Celtic Clancy
      Falkirk V Hearts Walsh
      Celtic V Hearts Robertson

      Delete
    3. I think for me yellow is acceptable. More of a glancing contact than a full on studs on ankle. Don't think it warrants a review from VAR as I don't see a clear error to be overturned.

Onto the second half, it was always going to be difficult to maintain the level of consistency throughout and I think on the whole it was achieved with one or two exceptions. Lots of mandatory YC's issued in the second half but the game certainly didn't feel stop start and that's credit to the team for allowing it to flow when needed and pulling it back when required.
Overall a decent afternoon's work for Walsh and team and all that's left to be answered is who will get the last two fixtures and that all important game next Saturday as currently I do not have a name in mind for it.

  19. How many goals exactly like this has Arsenal scored while interfering with the goalkeeper??? Maybe it is a foul, but if the decision has already been made that this is tolerated in the Premier League when it comes to Arsenal, then at least keep the same criteria.

    1. There is a lot of contact tolerated in England, which isn't elsewhere. Holding the arm down which is being used to catch/punch the ball, is the one thing that is seen as punishable consistantly though. There was clear evidence of a foul, not just some contact, in this scenario

  20. In the meantime, in Serie A, unfortunately another extremely negative performance from Daniele Chiffi must be reported, one that ends up impacting an important result in the Champions League qualification. Rival teams of AS Roma are already complaining about the penalty that was awarded after a review.
The referee from Padua initially gave an attacking foul, but he was very far away from the actual point where the contact occurred. In my opinion, he blew the whistle more on instinct, because he felt he had to call something in order to give credibility to the decision. The problem is that, in my view, he could never really have seen anything clearly there, and ended up awarding a foul that simply did not exist.
Paolo Silvio Mazzoleni, a very pragmatic VAR, unlike others, not incline to apply grey areas, immediately reviewed the incident, and we can all agree that it was not a foul in favour of the defending side. However, if we isolate the clear and obvious mistake aspect on its own, the situation becomes more complicated. Let's say that if nothing had been called on the field, it might have been harder for the VAR to intervene, because the referee could still have argued that he had evaluated the contact as insufficient for a penalty.
In the end, Roma received the penalty and converted it, they are now in a very important position in the standings.
A very heated Rome derby will follow in the next round, but first there will still be the Coppa Italia final on Wednesday. Predictions suggest that Guida should have recovered from his minor injury in time for the Coppa Italia final, while Maresca is said to be in excellent form ahead of the extremely intense Rome derby.
Despite everything, Chiffi ends a negative season. He has had moments clearly above his usual standard, such as Napoli–Juventus, which he handled really well, because technically he is often capable, even though today not even that aspect was convincing. With solid decisiveness and players who are reasonably calm, he can generally get the job done. But whenever matches become heated, tense and difficult, what happened today happens again: he completely loses control, because at times watching him on the pitch feels almost like watching nobody at all.
There was a phase after Roma had scored the 3–2, near the corner flag, where their management of possession genuinely gave the impression that there was no referee on the field considering everything that was happening.
I say this with regret, because I honestly don't understand what goes through the minds of certain referees when they step onto the pitch and continue to project this sense of anonymity.
I know I have many flaws myself, but I think that if I am given a task, a mission, and I step onto a football field, why should I appear like someone who does not want to do anything? Go there, referee the match, make decisions, show that mentally you are fully switched on and present in the game.
That aspect really bothers me. Unfortunately, nowadays this seems to be a widespread refereeing problem on average.
Anyway, I do not want to bother you any longer, I will just leave the video. I am also posting the footage of the management phase I mentioned before final whistle with Roma trying to waste time.

    2. Quite controversial choice to blow the final whistle at 90:00 given ot was only 2:0. But maybe Real players didn't want to play and asked for that. In addition, more conflicts were possible, so maybe a good decision.

The game was very sensibly refereed, Hernández Hernández earned the players respect, well done here!, but a penalty for that illegal use of arm should've been awarded, imo.

      Delete
    3. IMO Hernández Hernández did well blowing for the final whistle at 90', considering RM had already 'surrended' and needed a win (i.e. score 3 goals) to avoid Barcelona winning the league title. He avoided the scenario of a VC or a tackle as an attack out of frustration triggering a mass confrontation.

Arguably too shaky foul detection in the 1H and (while very difficult to spot live for Hernández Hernández, wouldn't blame him here, idk if enough for VAR intervention) the Eric García-Bellingham PAI early in the 2H was more PK than not. I don't think the Canario lost control of the match (whose difficulty was normal-easy), there were just two isolated scuffles between players correctly solved with cards.

      Delete
    4. Penalty is the only decision there. Nothing justifies play on. Elbow in the face.

      Delete
    5. Truly. How is there no VAR intervention for that? I'd honestly argue it's closer to VC than reckless, but it *at least* has to be a penalty.

      Delete
    6. No more than careless for me, the movement of the opponent also contributes to contact. Penalty should have been whistled. but I can understad why a Spanish VAR is in trouble there to make a call (they see definitely worse things in this game...).Would have been assessed as rather soft call by most people. I know it's not a good explanation, but maybe the correct one. :)

    3. And we now have the second missed RC of the half. Clear YC correctly given for SPA, the player commits 3/4 dissent by action over a sustained period towards the referee and no 2YC. I am generally fair in my appraisal but this has been dreadful. Poor from Madley as frankly a referee far overrated to be wearing the FIFA badge.

He's really struggled and unfortunately this match should have never been in this referees range especially someone who's not performing at his best and following on from a difficult Saturday.

  31. Also can report a poor first half from Duncan Nicolson (FIFA in Jan 2026) in the Scottish Premiership semi final first leg. Got the one big key decision of the first half for a no penalty award on 43'. Has allowed a ridiculously high level of body contact to be allowed which has resulted in clear fouls being missed. Has also missed 2 mandatory YC's, one for SPA and one for a reckless challenge right Infront of AR2 who should have advised of a YC. Losing respect of the players and players becoming frustrated as a result. In a pickle now as to be consistent and allow the high level of body contact and further upset the players by missing fouls or become inconsistent and adopt a lower level of contact.

5:10 should be handball outside the box, I think he assessed SPA and not DOGSO due to the three defenders behind (he made a gesture like counting them when the other team complained). But the timing of whistling was wrong. Here the attacker could have tried a shot on goal with empty net. I would say he should have waited a moment before.

8:15 penalty for reckless challenge after attacker kicks ball, in this case he waited a moment for a possible advantage, then correct whistle
