42’ initially gave free kick to CEL then quickly changed direction. Correct decision in the end but looked briefly messy.
I think the first YC is supportable. Letting a sliding challenge go early on is always risky. He's done well in a challenging game so far

Summary:
Overall I thought this was a slightly below expected level performance for me without being a disaster. Was not Walsh’s best day on the pitch. Sanctions were very inconsistent and general decisions were okay with room for improvement. A note for both AR’s who I thought performed excellently and contributed well and with effect. For me this confirms what I believe to get true that currently despite being international number 1 Scottish referee, domestically he is number two behind Robertson.
An acceptable performance from Walsh.

ReplyDeleteProblem is that Brighton have a white away kit so that’s also ruled out. I’ve never seen them make a home team wear an away kit, so this was the only option.
DeleteI would add that it’s probably not as bad at pitch level than on TV. The sun doesn’t help the TV image either.

DeleteIf Foden is getting a red there, surely Bruno Fernandes has to get a red too. Blatant kick when on the floor, should either both be a man down or both on a yellow
ReplyDeleteI think Bruno was a touch fortunate to escape a YC, but nothing more, it was far less forceful. Also much more disguised and easier to miss, whereas Foden's studs in was a far more obvious action

DeleteHonestly, Fernandes deserved a red card too. He deliberately kicked Foden in the backside, and Foden reacted with a kick back which was also a red, and Michael Oliver spotted that correctly. But VAR was completely asleep there.

ReplyDeleteRC is correct decision for the reaction, but well, you can't leave the opponent unpunished. Missed mandatory YC. In an extremely strict application of LotG it could even be RC as well.
It's correct by VAR to stay silent, but situation should have been managed better by Oliver.

DeletePersonally, I think Oliver was absolutely fine today. Fernandes should have been booked for his subtle kick. And he got in the way of play a couple of times. Other than that, his performance was good, no major issues at all. The goal is the responsibility of VAR, and I think those discussions will continue for some time

In my opinion the offside should be punished because attacker tries to play ball when he is very close to a defender and he surely interferes with the play.
However, I think AR wrongly flagged the scorer, so they made the assessment based on that, otherwise Oliver should have been sent to monitor.
I think for a correct use of VAR, given also the complex situation, Oliver should have checked by himself and I think an offside would have been the final decision.
The argument for allowing this goal is that nobody of the two in the middle of penalty area would have reached the ball, attacker and defender, but in reality there is a participation in the play in my opinion.
Here becomes a matter of interpretation and I don't know more about Premier League guidelines.
Agree for me no17 is clearly offside and make an impact on the defender then this should be punished and cancel the goal. Overall really bad game from Oliver, it showed on his face at the end of the game, when he touch the ball for the 2nd time this evening, looked frustrated about his game.

DeleteIn my opinion, the short-circuit unfortunately originates also from the assistant referee mistake, who reported the wrong player in an offside position and failed to consider the possible active involvement of someone who doesn't touch the ball. This makes the process more complex, but obviously still something expected by a VAR operating in Premier League.
DeleteThey should have called Oliver over for an OFR, and then the English referee should have explained to everyone, confirming the disallowed goal originally called on the pitch (but for a wrong reason) that it would have been ruled out anyway due to a punishable offside position by the other player. I'm not saying it's extremely complicated, but it's certainly not easy either. Indeed, judging by the official explanation given by the Premier League, that Enzo Fernández didn't play the ball, it seems they stopped the analysis right there, without looking any further.
It's possible VAR didn't even consider that it could still be punishable, but that would be a serious mistake at this level nonetheless. We'll see if Howard Webb explains it or if we get to hear the audio of the communication between Oliver and VAR.
So Pro Ref (PGMO) have admitted it was an error of judgement, and an OFR should have taken place (subjective offside)
DeleteBig mistake by Donohue/Antrobus then. Clearly they won't be on VAR next week but will be interesting to see if they're dropped from doing an on-field game also. Donohue might be injured anyway since he was meant to do West Ham/Wrexham on Friday but was replaced by Barrott a day or two before the game.
DeleteDonohue I think also had a complete misunderstanding of handball law as VAR last year (Palace Chelsea I think?). Surprised he got a much shorter time away from VAR than England did on his Liverpool Spurs offside blunder.

ReplyDelete“Following the incident in the 60th minute of Sunday's Premier League fixture between Manchester United and Manchester City at Old Trafford, we can provide clarification regarding Erling Haaland’s awarded goal.
The on-field decision was offside against Erling Haaland – that was checked by VAR and he was found to be in an onside position.
In the same attack, it was established that Enzo Fernandez did not play the ball and therefore that makes any offside offence subjective, however, on this occasion, the VAR did not recognise the likely impact of his position and should have recommended an on-field review.
“Contact has been made with Manchester United this evening to acknowledge what we deem is an error of judgement. A review of the incident will take place.”
