    I consider the appointment of Silvia Gasperotti as a referee on the day immediately following an assignment as Fourth Official to be less than optimal. Should such scheduling constraints prove unavoidable, the reverse arrangement would, in my view, be the more appropriate solution. However, particularly when making the initial appointments, at a stage when maximum flexibility still exists, I would refrain from assigning any official to a different venue as Fourth Official on the day preceding a match for which they are appointed as referee.

      Yes, with 18 referees in the tournament squad, this really seems avoidable. The three referees without appointment so far are Koizumi (JPN), Kim (KOR) and Demetrescu (ROU), so one of them could have been 4th official in MEX-BEN (unless they are unavailable).

      And the underlying strange thing is, that no support officials have been nominated. In the last edition, there were 4 support referees (and also 18 main referees).

    A late call for Allys Clipsham NZL, assistant referee not included in the original selection. Let's see whether she is a replacement. She has been appointed in AFC team, the expected official was Supawan Hinthong THA. However, we can't say, as it seems there are many changes so far.

    Huerta de Aza's performance was not the best. Penalty awarded only because AR1 noticed the offence (37'), missed blatant encroachment at kick-off (0'), missed blatant SPA holding by BRA16 due to bad positioning (13'), missed stealing metres at throw-ins (16', 90'), possible YC for reckless kick by TAN3 (29'), possible YC for SPA to BRA8 (90')

    Marcotte with the easiest game of day1, she didn't face any challenge in POLARG. Potential YC for delaying the restart in 90+4' but she forgave the Argentine player.

    Ferrieri Caputi with a game involving many challenges. Potential YC for SPA not given in 2', missed mandatory YC for reckless step on foot in 26' (totally missed by her and AR1), not stopping play for head injuries in 8' and 81' that could've led to big troubles.

    Anahí Fernández with not a clear performance in CANENG. Penalty should've been spotted live (85'), possible YC to ENG7 for simulation (6'), missed YC for SPA to ENG18 (9'), being hit with the ball twice in a short period of time (13', 14'), possible YC ENG5 for SPA and/or ENG2 for delaying the restart (57'), funny incident when everyone thought the ball was out and English player caught the ball (78').

      Honestly, sometimes it's impossible to understand how referes can miss so evident incidents like the penalty in Canada - England, with a free view. And then making an OFR without being reactive at monitor.
      Mexico - Benin is a clear penalty, no doubts.
      Brazil - Tanzania is the classic situation in which attacker makes everything to win the call, but always assessed as penalty.

      Expected level performance by Charly Deretti in an easy-going FRAKOR. Quite lenient disciplinary but no mandatory YC missed. Perhaps she should’ve clocked that French players’ tactics was to quickly stop potential counter-attacks by deliberate offences but as the different players committed the fouls, there is not much to blame the ref (64’, 69’, 76’, 83’). In 71’, the play was stopped for suspected injury of players of both teams after head collision but they were allowed to stay on the field of play.

      Mrs. Twanyanyukwa faced two key match incidents in JPNNZL:
      - no penalty for handball (57’; good call according to current interpretation - the ball hit the New Zealand’s player in a thigh, changed moving direction and the contact with an unnaturally positioned arm followed);
      - penalty awarded for goalkeeper’s intervention after an on-field review (84’; very long check and given the images shown to the referee perhaps something was wrong with the software, otherwise very amateur procedure by Maria Rivet; I agree with the intervention although using the FIFA philosophy one can say the contact was initiated by the attacking player, but to me she was trying to get over the goalkeeper and was simply tripped)
      Disciplinary was okay-ish: opening YC to NZL11 for LoR/SPA shirt pulling (16’), missed YC to NZL17 for SPA holding (20’, if whistled it has to be a YC), YC to NZL8 for reckless tackle after some delay (76’) and a balancing (de facto wrong) YC to JPN4 for SPA (77’).
      The most shocking was the lost time compensation. The VAR check started at 84:00. At that point already third minutes should’ve been added. So, easy maths, it should’ve been “9” on the electronic board. Instead, the “5” was shown. After the penalty goal, the play was restarted at 92:00, yet the final whistle came at exactly 95:00… So, even though the overall performance was not bad, the OFR (procedure) and the extremely subpar dealing with added time left us with a bitter taste.

      Silvia Gasperotti is surely ahead of most of their female colleagues regarding soft skills. It was very nice to watch how well she connected with players by staying serious, professional and at the same time her talks not being theatrical and not taking too much time (quick stern warning after UB against GK in 12’, quick talk to a player after an attempted delaying the restart by not retreating in 14’ and 41’ or perfect positioning and clear gesture after tackles on the ball in 25’ and 33’ gave her a very high level of credibility). Two possible YCs not given: to ECU3 for SPA holding (37’) and GHA3 for deliberate SPA-ish handball (51’, would be good also for balancing purposes after a YC to ECU player four minutes earlier).
      Everything would’ve summed up for a good performance but the Italian spoiled it by awarding a totally wrong penalty for handball to Ghana only to instantly switch for offside (really blatant one, should’ve been given earlier with the SAOT-Live system in use).

      No problems for Casey Reibelt who applied a high threshold for fouls and nicely contributed to a football-focused fast-paced USAITA. Good play-on call in APP at USA's goal (17’ - clear tackle) and tricky incident with potential impeding at Italy's equalizer (40’, for me it's a foul but I guess FIFA will accept). The opening YC to ITA11 for cynical tripping/kicking from behind gave the clear signal that unsporting behaviours won’t be tolerated (22’). In 90+3’, USA’s goal correctly disallowed for offside.

    A game that didn't offer many challenges for the Ugandan official but the overall picture was not good after two overturned penalty decisions (51' no handball, 76' fair tackle) and three VAR corrections re. corner kicks (4', 41', 64'). Also, not addressing the very blatant late tripping by NCL9 in 2' was suboptimal.

    Very elegant way of refereeing and being a very fluent English speaker makes the Korean looking very professional, even comparable to best UEFA Elite referees. The game was a typical Latin game with some trash-talking (GK to a penalty taker in 25' and verbal conflict in 43') and many challenges.
    Unfortunately, two OFRs were needed: missed illegal use of arm - penalty awarded after OFR (21') and missed kicking offence - penalty awarded after OFR (86'). The no-penalty decision after clumsy tackle in 33' was correct. I was surprised to not see an OFR for potential violent conduct after COL18 kicked her opponent in the face (90').
    Possible YCs to COL14 for tactical impeding (33', very stern warning issued), CRC10 for strongly kicking the ball away after a FK awarded against her (45+4') and COL8 for reckless late challenge (53').


    ESPNGA (Marianela Araya)
    Differently to previous three games on Day 3, this one didn't offer any key match incidents. The overall impression: a typical FIFA refereeing in a bad meaning. Nigerians decided to play roughly against Spaniards and the referee should've act stronger against some of the challenges. For example, a strong warning should be given in 24' after cynical challenge by NGA11 but it was delivered one minute later after a 'nothing foul' by NGA12. Nothing followed after late challenge by NGA10 (29'), tactical offence by NGA12 (32'), tactical offence by NGA10 (40') and only a very blatant reckless kick by NGA15 caught attention and the player was cautioned (58'). The Spanish player deserved a YC in 90+1' for quite blatant SPA tackle. In 49', the referee - due to bad positioning - missed a FK execution and not keeping 9.15m by Nigerian player, play was allowed to continue...

      Some very positive notes in the officiating by Peruvian referee. Excellent call for the handball. I agree with no penalty in 56', rather surprising (in positive sense) that VAR understood the point of view by referee. Then OK to play on in 42' as well, but I think here she rather mised the couple of players, not looking at them. Indirect free kick close to end should be because she thought no contact. Correct by VAR to stay silent as this one could have been just YC for reckless.
      Extremely strange that Nabadda got ARG - MEX after two OFRs for wrong penalties, in the first case it's always hard with handballs, but I fully dislike these very easy whistles by many referees, they don't see the handball,they just think that it has happened.
      About the Korean referee, she should have spotted the penalty in 86'. The illegal use of arm was maybe a bit harder to spot but still...
      Very good no penalty decision in 33', while I understand why no VAR intervention for the possible violent conduct as the end of the game, VAR thought about an unintentional action, so rather reckless, but to me it was on purpose.

    Tricky penalty incident in 25' and the Serbian VAR was most likely in trouble to decide - I would say the Argentine was rather hit by the ball and not played it and then she tripped the opponent, so the optimal decision should be a penalty here.
    Otherwise, a very lenient performance by the American referee who handled the game in a typical FIFA manner. Forgiven YC to ARG8 for SPA in 2', correctly issued YC to BEN2 for SPA in 6' and then BEN players were entitled to do anything: hard challenges (36' - warning, 40' - warning, 54', 90+1') and tactical offences (29', 37', 90+3'). Good alertness re. throw-in position in 34' but in 37' and 89' she was too meticulous in this regard.
    Good performance by AR1 Meghan Mullen: great onside before penalty (57'), very good onside prior to Argentina's seventh goal (66') and correctly disallowed Argentina's goal (89').

    Quite challenging game for the Uruguayan official. Okay no penalty in 35' (holding but the Polish player fell on her own accord), play-on after potential SPA/DOGSO pushing (69'), on-field review was needed to determine the foul on Polish player and award a penalty (71' - however, the ball was not reachable for the attacker and the offence was not clearly reckless, so FIFA maybe would accept/like a play-on?) and a tricky penalty incident - knee against back/ribs but, again, the ball not reachable for the fouled player and the offence not being clearly reckless, so VAR didn't intervene (85').
    Apart from above, good alertness and overall game management, able to connect with players and control their behaviours.

    Bad performance from the Chilean. The first penalty to England should've been spotted live (11'), controversial no penalty after dynamic tackle after the pass had been made - no replay, unfortunately (36'), correct penalty to England for tripping (42') and epic goal -> penalty -> offside (without VAR gesture) decision (83').
    In addition, poor handling of a Tanzania player going off for 1' after medical treatment - re-entering the field of play without permission managed in-play (3') and bizarre offside call by AR1 Leslie Vásquez (8') who correctly flagged offside at Tanzania's goal (90+3'). Not an evening to remember for the officials...

      Thank you for these reports.
      Regarding Maria Sole Ferrieri Caputi, coming to this point after she has participated in so many FIFA competitions, it can be said that this is her world and that she feels more at ease here compared to Serie A and Serie B where, unfortunately, partly due to these continuous absences due to international duties, but unfortunately also (and more) technically, she struggles to stand out.
      The two major decisions of her match are very clear, the penalty kick first and the red card after, but that doesn't change the fact that it was a very strong performance.
      I would say that, since it all started from Collina idea to call her one of the first times for the FIFA tournaments, and her career was heavily accelerated at the UEFA level, she could referee the final of this U20 WC if Italy allows it, but we have to wait and see.

    In my opinion wrong intervention, but the argument by Portuguese VAR is clear, almost no contact with opponent.
    However, given that the arm is clearly hit by the raised leg, no chance to consider it a clear and obvious mistake because the player entered in a very dangerous way the challenge.

      I'm glad you think it's a wrong intervention, but for me the "logic" from Campos is absurd. The challenge could have broken the other player's wrist. And if it was a little to the right, it would have speared her in the abdomen. The myopic focus on the point of contact these days is maddening. The tackle itself endangered the safety of the opponent. Whether the limb is the leg or the arm (or a limb at all) should be irrelevant with this bad of a tackle.

      I cannot believe a VAR sent this down as a clear and obvious error. The disconnect between theoretical officiating from the VOR and good on-field practical refereeing seems to be getting wider and wider.

      This time we agree about everything.
      I will repeat it again and again: focusing on a detail (in this case the point of contact) is the biggest argument from which many crucial mistakes are made by VARs in modern refereeing.
      Very often, they don't analyze the full picture for unknown reasons, but they look in particular what they can find for their personal interpretation, and that's a big issue.
      In the case of Catarina Campos one can say she was in doubt that, given the point of impact, the challenge could have been assessed as not enough for SFP, so she decided to shift responsibility to Ferrieri Caputi. It's easy to understand this reasoning, but let me add, in modern refereeing in both FIFA an UEFA, they do many seminars, lessons and so on. but I fear they never introduce such a topic.
      It's easy to say, before looking at a detail, try to get always the full picture: how the challenge starts, how much dangerous it can be, and so on.

    What are the arguments for a no VAR intervention?
    What are the arguments for no PK call?

    I believe the referee team (especially AR1) erred in not spotting the deliberate yet completely unnecessary act by the Colombian player.
    The fact that it happened during open play and off the ball. I can kind of understand the referee team missing it live. Even though I have a hard time believing that AR1 didn’t see it.
    The non VAR intervention, I am personally unable to find any reasons or justifications.

      I don't find the incident you are reporting, moreover in the 90'+1 minute AR1 was on the side of Colombia attack. So in case should be AR2, I think?

      My dear Chefren. I’m not advocating for VAR to have intervened for a VC Red Card and as result a PK.

      My question is, why is this not a VAR review for a just a PK? What are the arguments?

      Letting that blatant and unnecessary act by the Colombian player go unpunished looks terrible.

      It’s just as bad as Frida Klarlunds missed hair pulling in last seasons Women’s Champions League match between Arsenal and Chelsea.

      And in my humble opinion, it’s these type of specific actions in which VAR can truly show it’s worth and help out the on field referee team.

      Campos had ZERO reason to send Caputti for an OFR on a CLEAR as day SFP that Caputti spotted perfectly.

      And Rivet, IMHO, should have called Riebeldt for an OFR at 45 +1 for a possible PK in DPR Korea vs Colombia.
