Wow, some very interesting and unexpected appointments
ReplyDeleteInteresting appointments. 😨
ReplyDeleteMaybe this year Nyberg is on the focus by the committee to end up with UEFA final,
ReplyDeleteZwayer back in the spotlight in London after turmoil season for him even at the USA world cup
Guida, Siebert, Walsh all expected to appear no surprise there and the rest appointed to as a stepping stone for the future ahead
Agree with Tevinjm comment.
ReplyDeleteGood times for the Swedish referee who seems to be in focus and considered for something important, long season still ahead but remarkable start for him (Napoli - Arsenal was a good performance).
To follow,we have experienced Elite referees for potentially hot clashes, first one is the game in Istanbul, if I remember correctly Guida got the Turkish team one year ago (or maybe two?) against Eintracht Frankfurt. This will be a game in which referee could have everything to lose, and no problem if this will happen with a referee rather at the end of career (I read the choice under this point of view). Hopefullyit will be a football game and not a battle.
Zwayer back in a rather high level in CL, Arsenal at home against Lille, not a big match, but it sounds good.
Siebert will be in Villarreal, normal assignment for him in a Spanish - Italy clash. The German had a similar appointment (Napoli against a Spanish team) about five years ago when he was still Cat. 1 (Napoli - Granada) and nobody could imagine that he would have been selected for the EURO a few months later.
Walsh, expected appearance for him, will continue with his regular path. But very important observer for him, with De Bleeckere. Still no time to raise the bar for now, according to committee.
Then, about the rest, as said, we have the new generation of referees with Saggi (after the NL assignment), Pajac and Gishamer.
Kabakov continues to gain space with another CL assignment.
He can estabilish himself as regular referee for such games, if not considered for something more.
Don’t forget that Nyberg refereed the Europa League semi-final between Aston Villa and Nottingham Forest last season, with Velasco as the referee observer. He deserved to be given more important assignments this season. I had originally thought he might be appointed to referee this season’s UEFA Super Cup, but we’ll never know who was initially intended to take charge of that match.
DeleteAs for Pajac, I’m not sure why the committee has suddenly taken an interest in him. His situation is similar to Godinho’s: both made their Champions League debuts only last season and have since received a few Champions League appointments this season, despite already being 40 years old. At that age, promotion to the Elite category is highly unlikely. Godinho’s appointments could still be explained by his position as Portugal’s second-choice referee, but Pajac’s situation is much harder to understand.Apart from that, I have high hopes for Saggi. My only reservation is whether a country like Norway can realistically have two Elite referees.
Well, Pajac is the Croatian number one - that could be as good as Portuguese number two.
DeleteFor me, Saggi's appointment stands out the most, because of the pairing. While they don't have the highest reputation, Brugge reaches the CL KO stage nearly every season, so they can't be considered as small team. And Inter rarely gets a First Group referee even against clearly weaker opponents. Also Saggi didn't get any CL game last season, so he continues the MD1 "comeback trend" of Balakin and Kabakov.
The other First group referees are on the less sonorous games of the day.
Will be interesting now, whether some of the big names will get their first game only on MD3 next week, or whether they will all work on Wednesday. Turpin, Letexier, Kovacs and Makkelie are still missing (also further WC referees Hernandez, Mariani and Pinheiro).
The fact that Nyberg is being mentored by Rizzoli clearly indicates that UEFA has a plan for him to officiate a potential continental final this season.
DeleteHowever, it won't be an easy match at Atlético Madrid's stadium. The Spanish side tends to put immense pressure on referees in high-tension situations, and Simeone often incites the crowd against the official.
Manchester United also has players who frequently complain, such as Martínez, Maguire, and Bruno Fernandes. It will be a trial by fire for the Swede—especially regarding disciplinary management—and I hope he rises to the challenge.
Why are Italian or Spanish referees always assigned to matches played in Istanbul? In European matches where Fener-Gala-besiktas play at home, referees from other nations should be appointed too.. It's always referees from the same countries
ReplyDeleteFIFA referee Sebastian Gishamer can now look forward to his second assignment in the UEFA Champions League. About a year ago, he made his debut also in Azerbaijan during a Qarabag match, and now he’s set to officiate the Sabah vs. SK Slavia Praha game.
ReplyDeleteThe Austrian media reported on his assignment 14 days ago. Apparently, the confidentiality requirement isn’t really being observed.
As always, AVAR appointments can give some hints for Wednesday:
ReplyDeleteKwiatkowski -> Sylwestrzak seems a reasonable option, but could also work with e.g. Rumsas
Martins -> probably Pinheiro
Higler -> probably Makkelie
Soto -> could be any Spaniard; Hernandez less likely, because he mostly works with dCG
Attwell -> maybe Kavanagh
San -> maybe Schärer again, maybe another chance for Schnyder
Dankert -> several options, German and non-German
and van Driessche already VAR -> probably not Lambrechts
Also worth noting, that several VAR officials are busy in the women's games (see other post), so the pool is limited.
Mancity vs psg may be joao pinheiro
DeleteYes, indeed.
DeleteWith Letexier, Turpin, Makkelie not possible, unclarity about Kovacs' availability and Mariani's form (+ di Bello already appointed), Pinheiro should have good chances.
Ahmed.. I'm 99% sure Pinheiro will be appointed to the Aston Villa vs Fener match.
DeleteMy Predictions
ReplyDeleteFeyenoord - Como: Irfan Peljto
LASK Linz - Liverpool: Rade Obrenovič
Aston Villa - Fenerbahçe: Danny Makkelie
Bodø/Glimt - Borussia Dortmund: Marciniak
Manchester City - PSG: Maurizio Mariani
Real Betis - Porto: François Letexier / Jablonski
Shakhtar Donetsk - AEK: Alejandro Hernández
Slovan Bratislava - Stuttgart: Halil Umut Meler
Roma - Real Madrid: Clément Turpin
Special mention.
ReplyDeleteYesterday was Nyberg's birthday (he turned 38). Happy birthday to the Swede. We wish him success and achievements, and hope his gift is a great performance today in Madrid. Haha.
AR2 Mihalj is absolutely awful with two blatant wrong decisions (throw in well corrected by Pajac and obvious CK missed…). On the contrary, very impressed by Pajac very good start !
ReplyDeleteIt isn't fair to pick on one guy but this official also made a very poor offside call in the UAE League last season (the extent of the mistake is why it stayed in my mind):

+1 Referee analyst
Delete15' very obvious dive not punished.
ReplyDeleteAgree but good decision to wave penalty and play on. But should be a YC for diving yes.
DeleteVery good match by croatian crew except two big errors by AR2. Very convincing Pajac with one YC correctly awarded in a quite easy match for him. Congrats.
ReplyDelete* two correct YC cards.
DeleteMore or less all was OK in both 18:45 games.
ReplyDeletePenalty awarded to PSV after OFR for ball landing on outstretched arm RBL#17 (15’) Defender is slightly out of balance though after being challenged by PSV#7.
ReplyDeletePK for PSV for a handball. I think his arm is in a natural position while jumping. Besides that, the defender receives a little shove that knocks him slightly off balance while jumping.
ReplyDeleteSabah - Slavia Praha 60' Handball situtation.
ReplyDeleteisn't PK? İmo Pk+yellow
Ref: Gishamer
https://streamin.link/v/46ccb580
Not sure about the touch by arm, if you watch carefully you can see that ball touches the chest and maybe before arm contact player removes the arm.
DeleteYeah.I know but the goalpost is empty.Defender is last man.Even though the ball hit his chest first, it is a handball. From footage I'm certain the ball hit the hand.
DeleteThis one looks like a clear penalty... The arm is used to intercept and control the ball, with intention, to prevent the goal.
DeletePenalty after OFR for handball in Leipzig - PSV:
ReplyDeletehttps://streamin.link/v/1e548e98
Guida appeared slow and lacking dynamism in GAL-BAR, with a heavy, inefficient stride that led to poor positioning. This has compromised several questionable decisions so far and diminished the Italian referee’s credibility. Not the first-half performance you would expect.
ReplyDeleteAgree. And very long and not clear OFR for a questionable offside. Had to be rewatch.
DeleteRewatch it now and good analysis by Di Bello and Di Paolo with a clear influenced offside position which had to be whistled. But very difficult to detect it live by AR1.
Delete+1
DeleteSaggi penalty in Inter - Club Brugge:
ReplyDeletehttps://streamin.link/v/80f76ff9
Good decision for me and good no VAR intervention. Grey area and nothing problematic here.
DeleteİMO clear trip.İt is PK
DeleteGreat call by Saggi, but why is the yellow card given only after the VAR review?
DeleteDon’t really understand Nyberg decision to disallow ATL goal at the end of 1st half. If you follow the LOTG this is not immediately before the goal imo.
ReplyDeleteYeah, difficult situation. In modern football I think the expected decision is to disallow the goal for a punishable handball, no matter if immediately before a goal. We mustn’t ignore that the striker does control the ball with his stretched out arm.
DeleteGenerally very active and talkative Nyberg in Madrid. I‘m hoping for a more intense and challenging second half, because the first one didn’t cause him any problems, if we exclude the OFR…
Very good first half for Saggi.
ReplyDeleteThe penalty is supportable though no big contact, but stupid from inter player.
Good offside called on inter disallowed goal by AR1
The end might be near for Guida! He’s struggling physically to keep up with the game. No explosive speed left whatsoever
ReplyDeleteWhy did it take 4 minutes for VAR to review such an clear offside in the Gala-Barca match?
ReplyDeleteBecause it was not so clear, whether the attacker touched the ball with his head or not.
DeleteYou could still argue for offside due to the attempt to play the ball alone, but then the question regarding clear influence on the opponent gets a bit difficult.
The fact, that there was no OFR, should mean, that they found a proof for the contact by the heading player.
Ofr for handball in Atlético Madrid - Manchester United:
ReplyDeletehttps://streamin.link/v/57dfc563
I don't know how much time passed before the goal, but regardless of that, it's possible to consider this handball a "normal" (deliberate) one, not related to the immediate goal scored.
I would not be happy as referee with the angle shown here. IMO, you can only assume a hand contact there, but it doesn't show it well enough to be sure.
DeleteAgree this is the only point to disallow this goal because there is at least 5 or 10 seconds after that.
DeleteThis clearly happened in APP. Yes there were a few seconds between this and the goal, but the ball barely left the penalty area during those seconds, no time for the United defence to reset.
DeleteNo penalty given for Club Brugge after elbow by Inter (17) on Club Brugge (44). Always penalty imo.
ReplyDeleteClear bleading nose after the contact.
DeleteUnfortunately, an evident penalty was missed by Kabakov live.
ReplyDeleteShould have been spotted by the Bulgarian...
https://streamff.com/v/33702ced
Yes you'd think his angle would be very similar to the camera angle shown as well
DeleteGiven the referee's positioning and his clear line of sight, the penalty should have been awarded by Kabakov himself, rather than by VAR.
DeleteInteresting situation in Villarreal in 63', Siebert applying the new rules, not allowing two players from home team to join the pitch after a substitution because the team wasted too much time.
ReplyDeleteThen they played for a minute without two players, the fans didn't understand and they criticized referee.
Villarreal tried to minimize the damage by kicking a free kick outside and then when ball again in play, committing immediately a foul to stop a possible attack. In the end, they managed to survive.
Really well done by Siebert and his team, once again shows that the players and staff don’t understand rules.
DeleteIs there a video of the situation?
DeleteVery good to see this! Well done by refs.
DeleteKabakov losing control in Norway, missed a clear penalty, the booked the wrong player for a high foot challenge. Players getting tetchy and Olise sent off for two yellows.
ReplyDeleteCorrect double YC, stupid from Olise
DeletePenalty could have been spotted live, but I can't agree that he lost control. Just the opposite! Also very good double YC by Kabakov.
DeleteYoro sent off after Nyberg consults VAR
ReplyDeleteSoft foul imo but supportable
Delete"soft, but supportable" should be a clear indicator against a VAR intervention though... (and I agree with that assessment)
DeleteThis screams on field decision to me. If foul given, RC, if not, play on. Hand across shoulder, yes, but also not a clear foul, the player falling doesn't match contact. Rosetti's high bar/clear and obvious I don't understand, as it seems to mean very little has changed. Don't like this intervention, it's not needed, play on is supportable at least
Delete@Philipp S agree I think VAR should have staid silent on this action, grey zone imo so especially with the new guidelines this should not have been an OFR
DeleteWrong intervention for me as well. Play on absolutely supportable, VAR should only intervene here in case of foul given but no red card shown, otherwise this is a completely subjective call which should be left to the on-field referee
DeleteThis is never RC, where is the foul on the player's part?
ReplyDeleteYoro sent off for breathing on an opponent. Supportable decision
ReplyDeleteClear fist in the back of the head by a Viking player, nothing said by VAR, RC imo
ReplyDeleteNo fist.. It was a light touch with a flat hand if we comment on the same situation. And what about the high foot from Bayern #34 hitting the Viking-player in the chest/neck area?
DeleteHaven’t seen the situation you are talking about but for me clear hand closed directly into the head with a violent criteria
DeleteIMO wrong VAR intervention in Madrid and disappointed that Nyberg didn't reject it
ReplyDeleteGalata GK catching the ball after a clear intentional back pass, completely missed by Guida. No impact on the final result as it is already 1-4, but still really sad to see such a poor performance at this level.
ReplyDelete2 debatable VAR interventions in Madrid. Both decisions not obvious either way in my opionion.
ReplyDeleteOFR for red card in Madrid:
ReplyDeletehttps://streamin.me/v/b804b52d
If no foul whistled by referee, for me not clear and obvious mistake.
But if whistled, it can be only red card.
The fact that it was a possible red card maybe changed the mind of Dutch VAR but for me a mistake to consider this one clear foul.
To me, it was more of a mistake by Van Boekel than by Nyberg. But if the Swede had wanted to reject the review, he would have done so.
DeletePardon sirs, but you can't have double standards. Yoro’s arm is clearly on the shoulder of the Spanish player, and it is a DOGSO. Nyberg (who unfortunately didn’t deliver the best performance of his life) failed to see it that way, and he made a clear mistake.
DeleteVAR overturned it. Justifiably so
I see the incident exactly as Ceferin described it—not as a clear and obvious error, since there is no distinct pull or push. VAR was wrong to intervene.
DeleteIn my opinion, if this same challenge had occurred inside the box and the referee hadn't given a penalty, VAR would have remained silent
There is clear and obvious contact on the leg of the Atletico player, from behind, tripping him. The foul is not with the arm, but the leg, and is clear and obvious if you focus on that.
DeleteI can report a good performance from Felix Zwayer in a not very difficult game.
ReplyDeleteRt
DeleteClear foul in the APP before 3rd goal of Viking, clearly going with the shoulder to stop a Bayern player, surprise by no VAR intervention.
ReplyDeleteTwo yellow cards by Kabakov, a very good decision in this case:
ReplyDeletehttps://streamin.link/v/7ea92d58
Not a positive set of games for Rosetti.
ReplyDeleteToo many VAR interventions, at least one of them being debatable.
Handball stays as issue, for me mistake about the red card in Madrid and very crucial call in a big game.
We should wonder again whether VAR is there to re officiate a game or just to correct clear and obvious mistake.
The question should be: do you consider the action by defender a very clear foul? No matter it can lead only to red card, you must assess if very evident foul before.
About the rest, for what I could see, positive games for the German referees, wishing the same for tomorrow to Jablonski.
Kabakov with a penalty that must be detected live (maybe even more blatant than HH's in CL play off).
Challenging for Saggi in Milan, Philipp had reported that, he was right, but I'm sure committee didn't expect such a game.
I have to check the mentioned incident of the elbow, as well as the offside in Istanbul.
Let's hope for a better set tomorrow.
If you focus on the clear and obvious contact on the leg from behind, the red card in Madrid is totally clear.
DeleteThere is no need to say anything about the Italian referee, but his assistants' offside decisions were often wrong
ReplyDeleteTrue
DeleteThere were VAR interventions in 6 out of the 9 matches last night. I think this is the first time something like this has happened
ReplyDeleteFor me, VAR interventions regarding very, very tight offside calls are irrelevant, as they are barely discernible to the human eye. I consider two VAR interventions to have been incorrect: the handball in Leipzig and the red card in Madrid. Otherwise, there were no interventions across four matches. You can also look at it positively.
DeleteIn Lens-Sporting, Arsenal-Lille, Villareal-Napoli and Inter-Brügge there weren‘t any VAR interventions. In Sabah-Prag and Galatasaray-Barcelona there was only one each because of close offside positions. Certainly not the best set of games but I wouldn‘t say something like this has never happened before.
ReplyDeleteHere three incidents from Saggi game (penalty call already posted above):
ReplyDelete50' Possible YC and penalty for reckless elbow:
https://streamin.link/v/39ac82ce
I think it's a classic situation in which you can't say how much the movement by attacker going close to defender, caused the contact. In other words, in my opinion not a 100% clear action by defender against attacker. Would have been accepted by VAR if called by referee, but rather not clear and obvious mistake. However, better if it doesn't happen.
64' PAI handball
https://streamin.link/v/855d530f
Correct decision by referee with clear gestures.
70' YC for simulation
https://streamin.link/v/4127e139
Nothing to say, absurd that a player in Champions League with VAR, tries to get a penalty in this way...
This was a challenging game, maybe even very challenging (at the border for me, because despite of the events, most of the time was played with a fair approach by both teams).
The Norwegian referee did well, I think.
The incident in the 50’ it’s very sensitive: reckless use of the arm, even of it is not on purpose, with the consequences being very serious. I would like to see an VAR intervention there…
DeleteGalatasaray - Barcelona, offside:
ReplyDeletehttps://streamin.link/v/f83928f6
https://streamin.link/v/99184a6d
Without OFR, it should mean that they spotted a touch by player in offside.
UEFA says:
37' Decision overturned: Goal disallowed
Galatasaray player, No53, was in an offside position and scored the goal.
Would have been offside even without touching ball?
Yes, clear interfering on defender close to him.
Another clip, deliberate backpass of not?
https://streamin.link/v/2d6cc9d5
https://streamin.link/v/ded729a9
Defender under pressure, maybe he didn't want to do that, it looks like a wrong attempt to play ba,ll, however a backpass.
UEFA reports that the red card in Madrid was given for tripping, and not the upper contact.
ReplyDeletehttps://streamin.me/v/b804b52d
It should be when attacker raised his left leg and hit defender, very often in Italy we call this one as "auto sgambetto", that means he tripped himself due to the backward movement of the leg.
Should be determined whether this is a clear and obvous mistake or not.
You cannot put the blame on the attacker in such case. The only responsible person is a defending player running behind the attacker in such cases.
DeleteMistaken identity in Walsh game (confirmed by UEFA).
ReplyDeletehttps://streamin.link/v/2f419baa
After the mess at WC, that's how it should be used.
A foul, but then the referee books the wrong player and not the one who has committed it (but always related to the same action).
Where can we read UEFA's report regarding the matches played yesterday?
DeleteNot the reports, just VAR explanations!
Deletehttps://www.uefa.com/uefachampionsleague/news/02a9-218080c33e00-948c7f405b79-1000--uefa-champions-league-var-technical-explanations/
I'm still confused; he shows a yellow card to the Leipzig player, but the foul (if there even is one) was committed by the PSV player, is that correct?
DeleteFurther clips from Kabakov game.
ReplyDeleteThis should be the incident mentioned above as possible fist, but in my opinion it isn't. I think one can give YC.
Pushing the player with arm to the ground.
Not a violent conduct,.
https://streamin.link/v/d7bba548
Then, the incident before the double YC to same player (this one posted above).
Possible RC for SFP, raised leg, assessed as YC for reckless.
Not the best management in the circumstance by Bulgarian referee: unknown what exactly happens. He books a player from iking (protests?) then it seems he doesn't find the Bayern player.
https://streamin.link/v/6d45e9f8
In the end final decision is supportable, but a direct RC without all such long sequence before, would have been better.
For me it looks like he is telling the VAR that on field decision is a YC and lets him check before visibly issueing it.
DeleteWatching it again, for the first incident I will say that a YC was enough there, but still missed by the ref team.
Delete
