Kruzliak already did two CL-duels. Liverpool - Maribor and Man. City - Feyenoord. He also did a round of 32 and a round of 16 in EL.

DeleteOne possible explanation regarding his absence in CL playoff might be that Valencia (ESP) depends on the result of 4 of the matches to know to which of the four drawing groups for the group stage it belongs given the coefficients, and precisely he is from Valencia. However, this seems to me like a weak argument and also doesn't explain the profile of the match nor it being a first leg.

La Liga opened last night in Catalonia, with a quiet match between Girona and Real Valladolid. Probably not many people will remember this scoreless match. Guillermo Cuadra Fernández will though- he made his Primera División debut having been promoted at the end of last season. Furthermore, this was the first Primera match to have a VAR team, so there was a high (potential) pressure for the 'arbitro' from the Balearic Islands.
Some points:
=> First of all, well done to Mr Cuadra Fernández.
In my opinion, also considering that VAR debuts in this match, it was a bit 'unfair' to designate a new promoted referee to this match. I know it was hardly sonorous match, but surely a referee with more experience (eg Jaime Latre or so), would have been a more sensible designation for my taste. Cuadra Fernández solved this match without problems, he will be far away from the headlines, and even the commentary said "muy bien trabajo por el arbitro"- well done.
=> We had two YCs, both within a minute of each other, at about 85'. Both were correct decisions, and it also his merit the first card is so late in the match.
=> He whistled quite a lot of fouls (40+), which especially in the circumstances was absolutely fine. Perhaps he could look to be a bit more lenient in future matches especially when a calm atmosphere allows it (it could have done in this match), but his 'safe' approach was clearly sensible on the night.
=> Three small penalty appeals for Girona, all correctly rejected without problems. No need for any public intervention by VAR del Cerro Grande.
=> Some small points for improvement:
* Better management of delaying the restart. Valladolid tried to delay play quite a lot. Twice Girona got very irritated at some more obvious moments. At the first he gave a small verbal warning, the second was more blatant and the referee did nothing. I would suggest that next time the referee could use a bit of management, stepped approach, prevention etc.
* At 27', in a control zone of Referee-AR2, referee made a small gesture of 'play on' before AR2 (correctly) flagged a freekick. It is better to wait until you have made a decision as a team, before making any gestures.
* I don't know whether he was speaking to the VAR or resolving his shoelace, but as Girona were trying to score a winning goal at the end of the match, it was better to make a gesture before they took the throw-in to wait, rather than whistle having them taken it, as this irritated Girona a bit (needlessly).
> I hope the triviality of these observations point towards a convincing performance.
In summary, I hope that the team lead by Guillermo Cuadra Fernández are happy with their performance in opening LaLiga 2018/19. They solved the match without problems, and are far away from the headlines. Even the local broadcaster praised their performance. Well done.
Being 34 years old, it will be interesting to see what kind of impression Cuadra Fernández can make in the Primera this season, it's not really fair to judge his overall merits as a referee on this match. Good luck for the future.

DeleteHowever, I'm always impressed by English referees management when they have to show a card: they wait even a long time before showing it, in this case Pawson at first looked at the fouled player and then he decided. Here one expects, after such tackle, the referee to go immediately to show RC to the author, also to prevent possible riots / confrontations... for sure in leagues like Italy, Spain and so on, you can't officiate with such coolness.
I think Chris Kavanagh will replace Bobby Maddley in January. He is a new version of Michael Oliver . Calm , not arrogant , communicative . Much better ref than Tierney or Attwell . He will become soon an elite ref

There's also some controversy with a rejected penalty appeal from Iglesias Villanueva yesterday in Betis-Levante, no OFR requested by Álvarez Izquierdo.
Regarding Betis-Levante, IMO it is not a clear mistake. It seemed to be the attacker's feet going towards the defender's. There was room to support the referee's decision and as such, an OFR would have been inappropriate. Remember, it is just my opinion.

ReplyDeleteI don't think that VAR intervened in this situation, it was Banti on the pitch that changed idea after having allowed at first glance the gol.
DeleteThere wasn't any VAR gesture... not the best management by Banti, I would say, he saw the player lying on the ground and he then disallowed the goal.
Also, in case of VAR intervention, I think Banti should have rewatched the incident, because it was a foul play, Rocchi couldn't overrule without an OFR by referee on the pitch.
I didn't like Banti's passive approach today. He missed a mandatory YC after reckless tackle around 30', allowed dissents twice and in the dying stages he didn't react at all after a player aggresively grabbed an opponent by the collar and the conflict continued in the next stoppage.

DeleteI never, ever liked this referee. On this blog many people wrote that he is rising star and that things... I never saw a single match of him where he didn't make crucial, obvious, significant mistake. By no means one of the worst referees in top leagues in Europe. Hey, this happened just in front of him, he had at least to hear that kick in the leg! This player would be banned 3-4 matches for sure, but what about Pawson?

Very good match for Jovanović, I am very happy for him. It is interesting that his rating is higher in Europe, than in domestic league. But, that's Serbian refereeing... He should be Mazic's successor, although it will be very tough to reach him. But, if he continuous to referee as he did so far, he will have his place among Elite one day.

There is no trust on Greek referees. Last season Borbalan was called for the Cup final because AEK wanted Papapetrou and PAOK wanted Sidiropoulo.

This year we have 9 new SL names. 1 of them failed the fitness tests.
The problems are bigger on the lower categories. I don't see any solution.
Having watched the match in Greece today, I fully understand the problem in Greece. When international referees from a different country cannot handle a situation in half time with outsiders walking into the pitch, would you except greek referees to do that? Melo Pereira is right; How many Bjorn Kuipers are there in Europe though.?

DeleteThis whole mess is his responsibility. And his partners. When you come to a foreign country to become Head of refereeing, you must come prepared. Just like Kyros did in Romania. You must have an image of the referees and AR's. Melo had nothing. He trusted Tritsonis and Koukoulakis so bad and they forced him to many mistakes.
Before Melo, Greece had 4 national league categories. That way they could monitor young referees at the age of 21-22 and appoint them to youth matches. Now this category is gone and those matches are given to 3rd league referees. They said that FIFA demanded it. Ridiculous.
Many things are wrong. From the selection of referees and observers to their development.

First penalty: correct, including YC.
DeleteSecond penalty: not 100% sure about the real contact, it can be even a simulation, but without further and close replays I think one must back referee.
Third penalty: foul but impossible to say whether inside or outside, maybe exactly on the line, but I'm not sure.
The first and second situations were solved correctly. But as for the third, it would be more correct to determine the foul before the line, the line passed under the body of the goalkeeper.

Challenging task for thrity-four years old Ivan Kružliak in Belgrade. Match which was never played unfairly, but certainly quite passionately giving the Slovakian some problems to face.
Kružliak solved the match well, and he should be happy with his performance, he was ready for the challenges in this SRB-TUR clash.
Considering the observer especially, I think we can say that Kružliak took a good step closer to becoming an Elite Category referee.
Some points:
=> I really liked Kružliak's self-presentation in this match. Reticent, firm, determined, but still involved with the players as an active presence- he found the right balance in this match.
His approach was a macrocosm of this situation at 47' (https://streamable.com/5wggf): he was not interested in being the players' friend, but he conversed with them frequently and created a positive rapport, emanating trust and respect. Even since 8' (see below) he showed to be very active in managing the players, and in 54' (https://streamable.com/a12iu) showing an impressive finer management helping to prevent a conflict. In other words, he managed to talk with the players without giving up his authority. This approach really worked on the pitch.
=> Kružliak whistled a tight match. Whistling fourty-seven fouls including some smaller contacts, together with a sensible disciplinary control and an (aforementioned) active approach allowed him to always have control of his hot match. Perhaps some of the whistles were evitable, and he missed some larger contacts here and there, but his line was largely consistent and predictable for the players. It was coherent with Kružliak's optic and the match.
=> Kružliak gave seven cautions in this match. All of them were correct, and corresponded to his quite whistling of the match.
* However, a YC was missed at 34' (https://streamable.com/6uysf), which is surprising considering not only the clear reckless nature of the tackle but also it was the perfect moment to open the cards. Perhaps AR1 should have have helped him detect the reckless nature of the tackle.
* After that, the way Kružliak used cards was very good. Cards for SPA (37', 41', +91'), reckless tackles (42', 79'), and dissent (see below) were all following a clear line which it was clear everyone understood. I would underline a good moment to open the cards at 37' (https://streamable.com/k5dmw0), excellent reaction at 42' (https://streamable.com/jffql), very good detection at 79' (https://streamable.com/wqrdc) and of course the dissent which I want to talk about below.
=> Management of dissent was very good. Early in the match at 8' (https://streamable.com/ye32l) BES88 showed a dissent which was actually a mandatory YC against AR2. Kružliak decided to warn him in a very public way, which in my opinion was the perfect solution. To open the cards there would have only inflamed the match, I liked the common-sensical approach shown here.
Then throughout the match, Besiktas players made a lot of small dissenting gestures after some decisions. Kružliak was tolerating them without reaction, which I thought wasn't in order with his approach, but at 57' (https://streamable.com/cimt0) he told the captain surely "the next player who dissents, YC!".
A minute later (https://streamable.com/pb0fq), BES88 was cautioned for a small dissent. It was not the biggest in the match, but I liked that it was shown it wouldn't be tolerated anymore. Especially as BES88 was the loudest player this was an 'excellent' YC. Well Done.
=> Referee showed a really excellent fitness, which ascertained his modern approach and meant he was always close to assess duels.
Delete=> Roman Slyško might have joined the CZE team, but the two assistants computed offside decisions well and showed to be good team members. AR1 had a few situations to evaluate, and only made one mistake.
Good performance by Ivan Kružliak in one of the most important matches in his UEFA career. If we consider the missed YC (-0,1), we have a performance on an 8,4 level in my opinion. Let's see how the Slovakian team can do in CL this season.

DeleteHow is the first penalty correct? There is no push, no possession. there is contact, but contact does not mean penalty. The second one: look carefully, the ball hit the leg of player and then hand. It is not a deliberate handball. You are saying that the arm was in an unnatural position. I agree but there is a deflection, short distance and it is also debatable if the shot was on goal. too far from the goal and too short distance. Please interpret the laws properly. Football is not basketball. Any contact is a penalty or any hand is deliberate or unnatural.

Philipp, I disagree with the second penalty but I fully understand what you are saying. How is that a second yellow card though? An unnatural handball from closed distance is never a second yellow card offence. I live in England and am quite used to English interpretation of handball. The first penalty is a clear mistake.

DeleteEnglish refs would never show a yellow card for that because it is not deliberate and of a very short distance. How would you justify that was a shot on goal? It was too close to say that. English commentators said last night that both penalties were wrong, especially the first one. The second one can be given without a yellow card. Just to mention, that the first booking was wrong. Vincic showed two yellow cards for one bad foul. Some of his cards were ridiculous.

DeleteI think Slovenian referees are pushed a bit too much, considering that Slovenian league is very weak. Skomina is an excellent referee, but I do not think that Vincic or Jug are equally talented. We needs more balance in European refereeing country-wise. There are countries in Europe like Belgium, Denmark, Norway, Sweeden, Croatia, even Portugal that have been underrepresented in European competitions.
