  1. Lazar Lukić with Crvena zvezda for the second time in a week (evitable appointment?).

Can anyone report how he performed in the Večiti derbi on Sunday evening?

    1. From what I saw, his performance was good. 8 cautions were shown (2-6). His management of the crowd disturbance at the beginning of the second half was quite good. He remained calm and players respected him. The match was not that difficult, though.

      Delete
  2. He was pretty ok. Had control, all problematic decisions solved with ease, had a smile few times. He didn't look nervous for his first "derbi". Also, the game was not tough as it can be.

    1. Thanks. I haven't watched him, but as an 1981-born, I would guess is not really a prospect for promotion in UEFA? And Miloš Đorđić?

    2. Milos Djordjic failed english test first time last year. If you ask me he cant achive so much..
Bright future for Serbian referees in the future is Milos Milanovic 26y old.

What constitutes caution in MLS if these blatant holding offences not? Referee was FIFA-listed Nima Saghafi.

    3. Nothing new, I remember watching Gold Cup and being surprised how much leniency there was.

    4. Gold Cup was at parts not even refereeing anymore. CONCACAF leniency was always pretty disputable, but nowadays - well, see for yourself.

  9. Controversy. Penalty and disallowed goal in Derby of Cracow in Poland. Referee is Bartosz Frankowski, UEFA 2nd Category. VAR is Daniel Stefanski, UEFA 1st Category. Your thoughts?

    1. In the first incident, in my opinion attacker is very clever and he causes the contact by trying to play the ball when defender looks to be quite sure of controlling it. A "sought" penalty, but technically one can't deny it. I don't like this way of getting a penalty, but for sure never a mistake.

Second case: in my opinion very soft if not totally wrong call, but not VAR stuff. VAR shouldn't have intervened. Referee noticed a foul before the goal scored and this decision had just to be accepted. Going to monitor and confirming it can be considered as wrong procedure in my opinion.

  10. Two obligatory straight red cards rightly shown by Michael Fabbri in Benfica - Livrpool

    1. Thanks for the clips. Very challenging games for Fabbri, in addition to that, he also whistled two penalties, both correct decisions as well.
No doubts about the DOGSO in the first RC scenario, correct as well to issue it for the reaction at the end of the game. Very often these incidents are unpunished / underpunished.

      Delete
    2. The first red card without any doubt correct decision. However I strongly doubt if the second one is in line with UEFA’s guidelines, displayed in their RAP’s.

      Delete
    3. I'd like to stress body language in the second incident. Much hectic.

      Delete
    4. Discussion about 2. RC is relevant. Too harsh decision, IMO. The second penalty decision is not showed on uefa.tv but the first is and that was IMO incorrect. Close to simulation.

  11. Slovenian league is low level, I can agree. But sorry look at the performances of their referees - Skomina, Vinčič...young very promising OBrenovic. Sorry, but they are doing really good job in UEFA and FIFA competition.

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. Of course. I agree. But behind them they have a man on the
referee committee, who has been "pampering" and take care of them, and they have a president for several years. Sorry, others might be so successful, but they just don't have that chance ;)
In the last 10 years the lobby has been expressed to much and the criteria are no longer relevant.
Simply, they are privet organization and they can do whatever they want...
Football is not any more sport now is only business, unfortunately...

  15. Odd scenes at Athens, Artur Soares Dias who is refereeing the first seminfinal of Greek cup between AEK Athens and Aris Thessaloniki, began the 2nd half after a 40 minute break instead of 15. According to reports, he denied to start the half immediately because of constants complaints from AEK for the penalty he whistled against AEK at 10th minute.

  19. AEL Lemesoú - Omonia Lefkosías
    Marco Di Bello

15’ Penalty (tripping) to Omonia?; Violent Conduct, OMO no.10? No sanction
18’ Onside by Emanuele Prenna for 0-1
25’ Offside by Domenico Rocca, Penalty (pushing) to Omonia?
66’ Reckless vs. Serious Foul Play, AEL no.27? Yellow Card given
74’ Reckless vs. Serious Foul Play, AEL no.6? Yellow Card given; Yellow Card (unsporting) for Omonia Coach, management by Vasílis Dimitríou
76’ Defensive Freekick (?), if not, Penalty (handling) to AEL?
78’ Defensive Freekick (tripping), then ‘goal’ for Omonia
86’ Defensive Freekick (charging), then ‘goal’ for Omonia

Overall: not the most intense game; good disciplinary control; not always the most reliable decision-taker in 1H; in ‘low-pressure’ scenes referee found it easy to talk and even connect (he was quite often laughing with players, relaxed impression) with players, in ‘high-pressure’ scenes referee made a very distant even arrogant impression as an angry top-down authority; ultimately, referee ‘won’ the players in this game -> evaluation of the performance depends how you view the (high number) of crucial situations, besides it was a pretty unremarkable game.

  20. DFB Cup Quarter Final

    Eintracht Frankfurt - Werder Bremen

Referee : Felix Zwayer VAR : Christian Dingert

    https://streamable.com/cytur

What is your opinion? Felix Zwayer has before missed deliberate handball then VAR Dingert has intervention. After OFR whistles Zwayer penalty for Frankfurt

My opinion is correct intervention by Dingert and clear handball.

    1. Of corse correct decision, arm is higher than shoulder and clearly touches the ball. Not easy to spot on the field, but surely penalty. After that two very correct YCs were shown, one for the coach.

And in the last minutes, Zwayer showed a very good RC.

    4. Strange that many German people don‘t agree with the penalty decision. I am a bit shocked that such a clear decision causes that much controversy...Poor Zwayer!

      Delete
    5. Germans have always had and will always have problems with assessing punishable handballs. This was a clear case of a punishable handball. One must praise VAR Dingert that he checked the situation, which did not seem necessary in real speed at all. I'm very sure that not everyone would have detected it. Incidents like that show whether you are an average or an excellent VAR. You can't really blame Zwayer for not having seen it on the field. He did a good job, though.

Solid performance in Croatia's biggest match.
He had match under his control for most part, there were couple of moments where I thought he would lose, but his calmness and player's professionalism helped him had this hot match under control.
All of his 5 bookings were shown in 1st half, including RC shown to Hajduk's player.

    This is video of 2 YC's given to Hajduk's player;

    2. Petrović is in UEFA 3rd.

I wanted to ask about Haris Kaljanac: his appointment to the Sarajevo - Željezničar derby at the end of last year (to be honest I was really disappointed by his performance) would imply that he was being readied to enter the FIFA list, yet he didn't.

Maybe I answered my own question but could anyone inform more on the circumstances on which Kaljanac missed joining the FIFA List for 2020?

      Delete
    3. My mistake, Petrović is 3rd cat. Kaljanac is now appointed to handle a derby of "Hercegovina" between Široki Brijeg and Zrinjski Mostar (the greatest Bosnian derby after Sarajevo-Željezničar). New match between Sarajevo and Željezničar is probably for 2 weeks and I expect Peljto as a referee.

For the incident that happened during the halftime between AEK and Aris, according the match observer report, 3-4 "fans" of AEK without accreditation insulted Soares Dias team outside their locker room. 1. 2. Offside offence
A player in an offside position at the moment the ball is played or touched* by a team-mate is only penalised on becoming involved in active play by:
interfering with play by playing or touching a ball passed or touched by a team-mate or
      interfering with an opponent by:
preventing an opponent from playing or being able to play the ball by clearly obstructing the opponent’s line of vision or
challenging an opponent for the ball or
clearly attempting to play a ball which is close when this action impacts on an opponent or
making an obvious action which clearly impacts on the ability of an opponent to play the ball
      or
gaining an advantage by playing the ball or interfering with an opponent when it has:
rebounded or been deflected off the goalpost, crossbar, match official or an opponent
been deliberately saved by any opponent
A player in an offside position receiving the ball from an opponent who deliberately plays the ball (except from a deliberate save by any opponent) is not considered to have gained an advantage.
A ‘save’ is when a player stops, or attempts to stop, a ball which is going into or very close to the goal with any part of the body except the hands/arms (unless the goalkeeper within the penalty area).
      In situations where:
a player moving from, or standing in, an offside position is in the way of an opponent and interferes with the movement of the opponent towards the ball this is an offside offence if it impacts on the ability of the opponent to play or challenge for the ball; if the player moves into the way of an opponent and impedes the opponent’s progress (e.g. blocks the opponent), the offence should be penalised under Law 12
a player in an offside position is moving towards the ball with the intention of playing the ball and is fouled before playing or attempting to play the ball, or challenging an opponent for the ball, the foul is penalised as it has occurred before the offside offence
an offence is committed against a player in an offside position who is already playing or attempting to play the ball, or challenging an opponent for the ball, the offside offence is penalised as it has occurred before the foul challenge

CLERAR OFFSIDE BALL THE BALL GOES IN THE GOAL - ROTATION: A ‘save’ is when a player stops, or attempts to stop, a ball which is going into or very close to the goal with any part of the body except the hands/arms (unless the goalkeeper within the penalty area).

FOR ME GREAT DECISIONS FROM ZEBEC

    2. Very complicated situation but totally agree with the offside, this is the same action, the ball is going into the goal, no doubt, OFFSIDE

      Delete
    3. For me it is very hard to say for sure that the ball goes into goal. Besides, the attacker is not influencing the defender in any way.

      Delete
    4. for me it's deliberate play from D, no one is challenging him for the ball, no impact, have a plenty of time to clear the ball normally

  30. AEK Athína - Aris Thessaloníki
Artur Manuel Ribeiro Soares Dias (Tiago Bruno Lopes Martins)

9’ Penalty (tripping) given to Aris
48’ Reckless vs. Serious Foul Play, ARIS no.26? Red Card given
    77’ Penalty (tripping) to AEK?

VAR Interventions: 48’ Yellow Card -> Red Card [OFR]

Overall: firstly important to keep in mind the extraordinary (and terrifying – what if those ‘fans’ were carrying knives?!) events at HT; and besides, two incidents (48’; after *2-1 – for Greek readers, what happened there?) in 2H could have thrown him off; tough performance to assess, also quite a weird game; after (brilliantly) awarded penalty to Aris, referee irritated AEK with some decisions: at 17’ he missed a clear foul to AEK, and then awarded a freekick to Aris for a soft to zero foul, after that all decisions in the next minutes against AEK were correct (ignored YC (reckless) though for AEK no.20), and after ten-ish minutes referee found a couple of compensation fouls to award AEK which calmed them down; mainly unlucky but also sometimes poor use of advantage which rather inflamed the game; two very good cards for dissent (even if he caused 17’); a small handful of very blatant smaller mistakes; referee showed simply amazing calm optic despite everything, even if his decisions did not always display that, his presentation was brilliant -> important not to lose sight of the context of this football match; ultimately probably middle-higher end satisfactory performance in the end.

    2. After 2-1, the trainer of Aris who was in the warm up zone next to the goalpost that the goal was scored fell to the ground during the celebrations. According to reports he tripped to a wheelchair fan but we don't know if it was on purpose or not. Aris general manager wanted to take his players to the locker rooms after this incident. VAR informed the referee that nothing punishable happenned.

    3. According to the official match report by the referee, at HT an elderly gentleman without accreditation for the referee's dressing room, attacked AR1 and grabed him from his genitals shouting "I am AEK boss, fuck you, why a penalty".

    4. 9:100% Penalty. He tackles his leg clearly.
48: Endagering the safety of the opponent. Good red card.
77: Penalty should be given. No problem.

  31. Anyone for this weeks Australian appointments?

    ReplyDelete
  32. Some serie A games originally planned for last week have been rescheduled on this week end. Among others, Sassuolo - Brescia, to be played on next Monday 9 March. Orsato was originally appointed for this game as VAR with Manganelli AVAR. Now the appointment has been changed. Almost all the other officials for the other games have been confirmed, so this could mean that Orsato has another international game on next week, if not again in Champions League (difficult but not impossible), I guess rather in Europa League. We will see. For sure the good performance in Madrid has been noticed by committee.

  34. Some observations re. Chris Kavanagh's performance in the Chelsea FC - Liverpool FC FA Cup game.

    - Selection of offences was mediocre at best. Some fouls ignored and some fair challenges deemed as illegal what made players angry several times.

    - Style of running to be improved. Rather strolling around the park than ardently following play. He was able to sprint using long steps but also visible leaning silhouette. Moving from one "D" to the other, not using digonal way of movement much. Problems with acceleration. Poor observation of assistants' areas - letting them referee in their area of responsibility.

    - Minimal if not non-existent communication with players. No reactions after careless-reckless challenges without contact with an opponent (39', 45+2') - reprimands at the next stoppage would be optimal! No interaction with dissenting players, just letting them release the air. (61', 90').

The game was handled without big controversies but some visible weaknesses were easy to detect. Chris should focus and work on them in order to become a real top-class referee. I'm sure he can achieve that!

    Best regards
    Heili

  35. Your thoughts:
Will UEFA EURO 2020 to be postponed???
The situation is really difficult, especially in Italy (Rome is a host city...

    1. In my opinion it is too early to give a final answer to your question, we must wait for next weeks, the course of the outbreak will be indeed crucial for taking any decision.
Having said that, and "knowing" UEFA, for sure they will do everything to allow the competition and in case, I think Italian venues could be excluded in favor of other ones.
Then, the worst scenario, to postpone or to cancel the tournament, is quite difficult to see, if not impossible, and nobody should wish that because it would mean a terrible situation in all countries. One can't say more at moment, I think.

    Important news!

According to this source (former serie A referee still in contact with active colleagues) Italian appointments for UEFA competitions have been annulled / changed by UEFA in recent days. I have the feeling that Orsato was indeed appointed for a game on next week, but now maybe he will be replaced. I'm really sorry for him. Hopefully this emergency will end soon.

    1. That is interesting, I wonder if that decission applies for observers, because there are lot of matches this month (CL, EL, EURO play offs) that could possibly been observed by Rosetti. I am sure that he wants to see as much as possible before EURO.

  37. Goalkick procedure question: Is is a punishable offence if the GK raises the ball to one of his defenders, who heads the ball back into his arms?

There was such a situation yesterday in Romanian Liga 1 and the referee awarded indirect fk for the opposing team from the 6 yard line:

  42. Red card for goal keeper is not correct.
What are the parameters for ref Cakir to show a red card. It's a 'simple delibary handball' by a player (=yellow card) and there is no additional reason to show this 'red' card because this player is the goal keeper. There was not any obvious goal scoring opportunity for the attacking team.

    ReplyDelete
  43. I agree. Incorrect red card, I don't understand this decision.

    ReplyDelete
  44. Well, the difference is that, the goal is empty and therefore the attacker could even score directly from the point of the handball with some likelihood.
Not a clear RC, but also not a clear mistake IMO.

    ReplyDelete
  45. Philipp 100% right: empty goal is main reason for this decision.
Player can take the ball and score. YC not wrong as well, but RC reasonable.
