  1. Is it safe to say that referees who are going for Tokyo Olympic tournament from UEFA will probably not be attending EUROs which is earlier than the Olympic but also very close

    1. I think that is right - so likely no Frappart and Monzul at the EURO.

    2. Good argument, indeed it should be as you wrote.
      EURO final: 11 July.
      Olympics start: 23 July.
Not enough time, especially in COVID extra-ordinary situation, to attend two major tournaments in a so short time, in two continents.
So the selection about EURO was also made based on that, I must admit, I had forgotten this tournament and the fact that both were to be played so close each other.
Among the selected referees for Olympics Dias, Frappart, and Grinfeeld were the names that I expected to be at EURO.
We will know soon the choices by committee.

    3. There were cases in the past where refs attended both Euro and Olympics in the same summer, but that was indeed before Covid...

    4. I disagree. UEFA referees in Rio were Çakir, Hategan, Karasev, Turpin and Mateu.

Only Mateu Lahoz didn't attend EURO from these.

    5. Not sure why you disagree - that is exactly what I said. The only difference is that it was before Covid times.

    6. That’s why we have Two category 1 referees here because I expect most of the referees will solely be at EUROS that’s why all referees selected to go to Tokyo are not Elite

    7. If this is true, I am surprised to see Dias and Grinfeld in Olympics but not in the EURO. I am also happy to see Frappart in Olympics instead of EURO

    8. I could see Artur Dias and Grinfeld attending both tournaments (maybe also Frappart) as they might be only planned for group stage matches at EURO anyhow. Group phase concludes at June 23rd, which would give 4 full weeks before the start of the Olympics. Looking at the 2016 referees, this was exactly the case for Hategan, Turpin, Karasev and even Cakir finished with Round of 16.

    9. I fully agree with Anonymous@8:47. I guess that Uefa needs Soares Dias, Grinfeld and Frappart at Euro 2020 in the group stage, otherwise I can't image where they can find 18 referees plus 6 IV officials. In addition Soares Dias really deserves to attend.
On other hand it's very rarely that they will go through the knock out stage, where Orasato, Cakir, Brych, Makkelie, Kuipers, Mateu, Del Cerro, Hategan, Turpin and Taylor (maybe Marciniak) are the main Candidates. So they can leave Nyon on June 23rd and travel to Japan middle of July

  2. Based on what I saw in her last tournament she seems like a very aggressive referee who can't control her emotions with players. Based on that she shouldn't be there.

  3. Umpierrez has a pending disciplinary hearing against the Uruguayan football association and as such was withdrawn from the list of referees for the Women Copa Libertodes early last month, so I am guessing she is still having the same issues

  4. Very happy to see Andres Cunha’s name once again in international referring albeit it being only as VAR

  5. Bibiana Steinhaus married and is named Bibiana Steinhaus-Webb now. If anyone will be surprised when this name will be used in the future.

  6. Will the referees be assigned to both men and women's matches or they will be only assigned to their respective gender, as in the past?

    1. I was always skeptical that Frappart would be called for EURO. However, I'd now bet anything that she will get a men's match in Japan. FIFA considers it U23. And it's the perfect platform to make the statement they want to make. Even the list was announced as comprehensive, which is something you can really only do for the Olympics. I genuinely would not be surprised if she got the opening match for the men.

    2. I really think that each referees will be assigned to both men and women matches. I don't see enough men for men matches, (14 men and 11 women)

      Delete
    3. When is the last time a male FIFA referee officiated a women's match at a FIFA tournament? Is it 1995?

I know some people will hate to hear this, but there are two different games and standards to a large extent. I have done professional second division men's matches and first division women's matches--it's night and day. The women's matches can be extraordinarily difficult to referee well when you are not doing them regularly.
I would be very, very wary of putting men on a women's match if they haven't refereed a women's match in years (or ever!). It's a recipe for disaster.

That said, in the back of my mind I think it's possible. The numbers are tuough. 11 women for the tournament that usually has 12. If you have Frappart or others do a couple men's game, it's a very difficult puzzle to solve.

  7. Interesting, that 3 out of 4 UEFA women are the same as in 2016.
Otherwise only Conger and Venegas are attending their second Olympics among the referees.

  8. Just few comments looking outside Europe:
    - AFC: I expected one man more and of course Al Jassim who seems the most quoted in the AFC confederation and the 1st candidate for WC2022. I expected Faghani as Var due to his experience
    - CAF: it seems no new names since Tessema is around since long time, while I really donp't know the VAR officials; are they potential candidates for WC2022 ? I expected Ghorbal or Abid Charef or Selmi
    - CONCACAF: Expected names: Barton and ElFath have opportunity to became world top calss referees; as for AFC I supposed 3 men referees and I would added Mario Escobar.
    - OFC: Not so many words to say....IMO OFC should be merged with AFC in one common confederation. It's a pity that Zitouni didn't get chance to officiate after his attendance only as IV at CWC
    - COMNEBOL: I really didn't expect Ortega and Valanzuela, because I was thinking that they are not elite referees in their confederation. Why not De Vivar and Haro ? Happy for Leodan Gonzalez after he lost CWC and Libertadores final for covid.
Any comment to mine will be interesting and appreciate for learning and knowing something about referees outside Europe

    1. Concacaf: Gold Cup will take place at the same time, so they needed Escobar there.
Conmebol: Valenzuela did a continental final this year, so he is Elite referee in South America. Ortega is their youngest candidate.
New names are always welcome; you cannot rely on the same refs for ever.

    2. Agree on Zitouni, throwing in Conger again is disappointing. Haro is out since U17 WC.

    3. Can you kindly remind me what Haro did at U17 WC, who demoted him ?

  11. VAR also in women olympic games?

    1. Yes.
      https://www.fifa.com/who-we-are/news/fifa-council-unanimously-approves-covid-19-relief-plan
"Furthermore, FIFA’s decision-making body approved the updated Regulations for the Olympic Football Tournaments Tokyo 2020, adapting them to the new dates of 21 July to 7 August 2021 and including the adoption of VAR technology."

With 20 VARs, FIFA probably will use 2 VARs per match. That should be doable with 14 matches in 2 days in the GS.

    2. Will the VMOs be at the stadium or in a centralized location?

  12. Well deserved for the Australians selected.

  13. Grinfeeld and Valenzuela seem to be new inclusions among the WC22 candidates as they are the only ones from the Olympic list not participating in the FIFA seminars in early 2022.

    1. IMO
      1) Rather YC here, no brutality, but rather an accidental contact after his try to shoot away the ball.
      2) Borderline. On the one hand, he clearly pulls the opponent's shirt, on the other hand, both are holding beforehand and the attacker exaggerates the contact.

      Delete
    2. 34' - where exactly is blue trying to kick that ball to?

I initially thought yellow and felt it was maybe accidental, but then I started to think. Why is he swinging with that much power and aiming a significant strike toward the touch line? It makes no sense. Maybe not enough evidence to say clear SFP, but I'd be very interested to know the rest of the match context. Was there an element of revenge here from an earlier incident?

If that's a pure accident, it is a very very strange and poor play by a professional player. I don't know where I come down by only watching the incident, because I think match context plays a huge role in the ultimate decision.
