    1. I TESTED POSITIVE FOR HSV-2 A FEW MONTHS AGO.

At first, Yes, I was devastated thinking I have an incurable STD for life. After doing hours of research I quickly realized genital herpes is a filthy parasite that just likes to hide in your body. Yes, There’s no “medical cure” but that doesn’t mean your body can’t get rid of it. I literally flush it out of my system with the help of Doctor Azuka, A natural herbal medicine which I ordered after doing some research. And now I’m HSV-2 negative, I never believed it until my doctor finally gave me the test results and behold I was HSV-2 free. I’m so glad that I found you, Doctor Azuka. Thanks so much for your goodness I’m grateful. You can also get your help from him through his email } dr.azukasolutionhome@gmail.com

    2. Disagree. Balbuena literally could not do anything else. He has to put his leg somewhere.

    3. Completely agree with bingo11, and it’s not even a foul in my view. I’ve stated this before and I echo once again, this is a completely normal action of a football player playing the ball. After that the foot has to come down somewhere, and in this situation it does in the most usual way. No irregular movement or additional use of force. Unfortunate, absolutely! But nothing to blame the WHU player for. It would have been a mistake if the red card was an on-field decision, but intervening here IMO simply shows a lack of quality.

    4. Once again the devil's advocates become active after an extremely dangerous foul play correctly punished. Fortunately it's the opinion of real referees and not the propagandists of blind leniency that counts.

      Delete
    5. Agree with bingo 11 and Marcello. This is a classic example of how slow-motion images and replays can make the normal kicking of a ball look like something horrific. Nothing turns into something if you misuse VAR like this. I 'understand' why the VAR intervenes, and I've seen calls like this before, but in truth, this is by no means a red card.

Having said that, I've been watching a lot of rugby refereeing clips in the past couple of days and what I noticed is that sometimes, in rugby, the outcome of an action seems more important than the actual foul itself. If a player jumps to catch a ball and an opponent runs into him, making the catcher fall head down on the floor, the player who has comitted the foul can be shown a red card, because the other player landed on his head. This is deemed (rightly) extremely dangerous for the health of the player. Maybe I'm not explaing the rugby law perfectly, but it makes for good discussion material. I am not sure myself what I like best for football. But if the football LotG would be written like this, I could understand why Balbuena was sent off here. It doesn't matter how he did it, but he hit the opponent on the leg studs showing and therefore endangered the safety of the player.

    6. Funny that a specific anonymous user always reacts very strongly on my opinion (and my arguments).
A little pathetic however that this user considers his no-mercy, zero tolerance arguments as the holy truth in refereeing. Quita arrogant attitude.

And I see the logic in Eogham’s argumentation, but I wish the rugby argumentation will not be introduced in football’s LOTG. In my opinion players who commit dangerous offenses while being able to predict the outcome should be punished, but players who just ‘play football’ in a normal way and unfortunately hit an opponent in a dangerous way, as a consequence of sheer bad luck, should not be punished. In this particular situation, what else could Balbuena do to pass the ball?

    7. It's as funny as your always one-sided opinions whenever an 'accidental SFP' occurs. Otherwise you're not so active at all. It's a clear sign you have an ax to grind, promoting blind leniency (and using this blog to that).

And don't make yourself a victim, please. You know when you're active on this blog, right?

IMO it's actually borderline, however, I tend towards YC.

On the one hand, the attacker hazards the consequences of his tackle with his studs up.
Nonetheless, on the other hand, he kicks away the ball and inevitably lands on the opponent's leg. That's of course a terrible and painful result, but is that Serious Foul Play, whilst his intention definetly not seems to be to even foul his opponent. These arguments slightly overweigh for me.

      Stills:

    9. You’re opinions seem to be as one-sided as mine, and for all we know you, hiding as ‘Anonymous’, might only appear on this blog to attack me :)

My ‘ax to grind’ is indeed to promote reasonable refereeing with feeling for the game, contrary to the ultra-orthodox, black/white way of assessing situations.

Apart from that, as always, you’re not interested in a discussion based on content but rather judge my participation in this blog.

Then at last I guess it’s not up to you to decide when we have to end a topic, though this time I can agree ‘cause this doesn’t contribute to the content anymore.

    10. No RC for me. Most arguments have already been written, but the most important point is that the blue player runs into the kick - and therefore is responsible for the contact as well - and he could have it anticipated even better than his opponent.
It would be different, if he was already standing there.

But as opinions heavily differ here, it shows
      a) no VAR stuff
      b) we need clarficiation either by IFAB or by the individual associations, what the correct outcome is in these situations.

      Delete
    11. Philipp, agree completely! No red card, and indeed so many conversation about it meens it's not a 100% mistake by referee, so no VAR intervention

      Delete
    12. Clear red card. It endangers the safety of the opponent. That's it.

      Delete
    13. This is a red card IMO. I have never kicked a football this way unless I am trying to injure someone. The weight should remain on the plant leg, and not transfer over to the kicking leg. This is a dirty move from Balbuena.

  4. So committee decided to appoint Makkelie for a semifinal first leg, now we have only to see what Real Madrid will do, to understand more about the final.
Interesting to see Grinfeeld as fourth official, I expected him in a EL semifinal, maybe he will get a second leg on next week, but also Villarreal - Arsenal on Thursday can be considered option, he would stay in Spain for some days. We will see.

  8. My thinking for the finals are Lahoz, in case of RM Makkelie or Turpin. But now what if final would be RM- PSG? Makkelie with both SF and F? Not impossible, remember Clattenburg in 2016, but Clattenburg was in really top top form that year...

    1. Taylor seems really appreciated by the committee, I can see him in this case...

      Delete
    2. That is my thinking as well, and if we can assume that Makkelie knows this two, this appointment is a weird one. If Real win he gets the final, if not he doesn’t? Maybe our perception of the situation is wrong, but if this is the perception Makkellie has it seems like a conflict of interest. I would’ve appointed Makkelie for the other matchup.

      Delete
    3. Smala, your argument makes me think that UEFA are simply not considering Makkelie for the final this year.
Let's see if Kuipers gets a semi-final or is being kept for a surprise second final by his friend and admirer Rosetti?

    4. As long as Makkelie *knows* that he is not being considered for the final, everything is ok.

    5. *or if Makkelie knows that Lahoz is NOT being considered for the final, for some reason.

  9. We now also know, that one of the previous final referees Brych, Cakir, Kuipers and Orsato will stay without CL SF.
I think, Cakir has the lowest standing among those, but as he already had no QF, I still expect him.
My guess is that Kuipers will be left out (maybe with an EL SF instead), as he already had so many CL matches this season. And he could remain a backup option for the final.

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. Kuipers will at least get a CL SF IMO given his current performances and given that his retirement after EURO is almost a certainty. If anybody performance wise should be left out from CL it would be either Cakir or Orsato for me. Brych is certain for me

      Delete
  10. Champions League Final will be played in Istanbul. Maybe that's a sign for Cakir if Real Madrid is in the final and no Mateu Lahoz or commitee thinks Makkelie not ready/too early.

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. Based on previous appointments made by Rosetti, there is no doubt who is number one for him - Kuipers and only Kuipers (to be honest, IMO Kuipers is in top three if not top referee of all the time, I know some will disagree, but as I said that is just my oppinion). So if anyone will get second CL final under Rosetti as a boss, it will be Kuipers.

      Delete
    2. Kuipers will take control of the world soon.

      Delete
    3. I wouldn't be surprised 😉

      Delete
  11. With Makkelie's appointment and with Brych having 1 of the remaining 3 SF's, we have Kuipers, Orsato and Cakir for the other 2 matches.

Probably Rosetti will wish Real to be out of the Final in order to appoint Mateu. If not, the appoimtment will go to Makkelie, Turpin or Taylor. No other realistic choices.

  12. To indicate I’m not blindly advocating the abolishment of the sending off as an instrument for modern referees, I would like to applaud Del Cerro’s decision to send Villarreal’s Manu Trigueros off (65. minute in Barcelona-Villarreal) after a frontal and studs-up tackle. Although he first played the ball this is NOT a normal football action and the offender can easily oversee the consequences for his opponent. Good decision!

  14. Very unusual situation in La Liga game Sevilla-Granada. Fourth official announced 4 minutes of additional time, therefore referee Ricardo de Burgos Bengoetchea (FIFA 2nd) blowed the final whistle at 93:00, then several minutes of confusion and complains from Granada's players occured.
After consulting his assistants, de Burgos called back the players who left the FoP, and restarted the game to play the missing minute.

I'm curious to see what was the cause of this awkward incident (miscommunication between 4H and referee ? watch problem ?), maybe the match report will give some answers.
In the meantime, not the kind of situation you see everyday.

  15. IMO, Brych and Cakir are 100% going to be in two of the three other semifinal matches. Last one is a toss-up between Kuipers and Orsato. I can see Kuipers being kept as a last-resort backup option for the final, in case it's RMA-MC and the committee doesn't trust Turpin yet. I think it's more likely that Turpin gets it ahead of Kuipers, but you never know.

If anyone is going to get a second CL final in the Rosetti era, it's Kuipers.

  26. I think maybe Makkelie missed a foul by Casemiro on Azpilicueta before that equaliser. Any thoughts?

  27. Regarding the issued YC, I must say that watching that challenge live I had the perception of a possible RC for SFP and I was absolutely sure about a very clear YC to be issued, I would have done the same. However, afterwards the replay showed that it was maybe something one could have managened as only careless, but I can understand why Makkelie issued YC in this case. I'm sure he had this perception as well. It looked like player had hit with leg in a dangerous way the opponent, being late in this attempt to play ball.
About the rest, I think he could have chosen maybe a better moment in which to start with yellow cards, but no major issues so far.
Now another YC that I find fully correct.

  29. As a referee, to take away a goal or breakaway, I want a clear foul, not something in the grey area that could or could not be called, and the contact on Azpillicueta before the goal fell into the later category for me.

  30. Let me say that there haven't been any big mistakes by Makkelie so far, very calm match and no issues in terms of match control. However, to be honest I am not really convinced by Makkelie yet. Maybe he tries to be calm but for me it seems like he was a bit bored today. Some soft fouls whistled while some more intense tackles did not lead to free-kicks. Disciplinary control also a bit questionable if we compare the first YC given with the fouls earlier in the match. No bigger issues but also not faultless...

43' Foul definitely. Card optional IMO.

    3. IMO
6' - No sanction necessary, especially in the 6th minute. The CHE player steps into the line of the tackle deliberately and initites it himself as well.
You can give a YC here, but nothing mandatory.
27' - No foul for me. The second contact with the trailing leg is not executed in a reckless manner. The first one successfully aims at the ball.
29' - There is nothing the attacker could do to avoid thst incident, normsl amount of physical play.
38'/43' - Both clear fouls. First one is a mandatory caution, second one is supportable.

It was very used too in Spain, but less frequently nowadays.

      Delete
    4. The way Makkelie pocket his card is my second opinion. I have a “quick” YC in my short , which I used the most. The RC in my chest pocket or back pocket of my short.
A wallet with two cards in the other chest pocket.

      Delete
    5. Agree with upstylon. Makkelie changes his “style”

      Delete
    6. IIRC Pieter Vink and Baldassi also had the same style, keeping both cards in a notepad.

As a Spaniard I can tell that until let's say 5-6 years ago keeping YC+RC+paper in the same pocket à la López Nieto or Rubinos Pérez was a given and done by 70-80% of referees (notepad was rare to see), while international referees used to have YC+paper in one shirt pocket and RC in the other one. Nowadays only a small bunch of LaLiga referees keep the cards that way (Munuera Montero, Melero López, González Fuertes...), but in the last few years I've noticed a massive change to keep the cards separated in shorts pockets.

As a spectator I prefer referees keeping cards in separate pockets because then I can see one second before which colour will be the card, while in Makkelie or 'formerly traditional Spanish style' you can't know until the referee effectively raises the card :D

  36. Solid 2H for Makkelie IMO. Four cards shown in this half, all fully correct. A much better foul detection too. While the 1H wasn't the Dutch's most polished display, I think it was overall a satisfying performance from the refereeing crew.

He was told before the EL QF, that this would be an important match for him, but thought that was only related to a possible promotion.
