ReplyDeleteFelix Zwayer (FIFA Elite) is appointed for today's important Bundesliga relegation play-off (1st leg) FC Köln - Holstein Kiel.

ReplyDeleteIn last week's Bundesliga final Matchday, Lewandowski scored a Record breaking goal in the 90th Minute and afterwards took his shirt of. Referee Markus Schmidt, who officiated his final game because of age limit, did not show a yellow card. The game was finished immediately after. Assuming the not showing of a YC was intentional, what are your thoughts about this?
I'm okay with it. This is a historical goal, the referee would be criticised from some people eather way.
DeleteI praise Schmidt for not being a robot.
DeleteIs this not the best solution which straddles both sporting fairness and, more importantly, common sense?
Deletehttps://www.givemesport.com/1245417-watch-fans-loved-what-the-ref-did-after-edinson-cavani-became-psgs-top-scorer
He makes it diffcult for other referees when he ignores basically the only law ever made that every refereee and player knows is a yellow card.
DeleteIt’s not fair to the other players who have to be booked for it, and it makes it difficult for other referees.
DeleteHis duties to the LOTG don’t end when he is about to retire.
The Bundesliga has 34 games. The LotG applies to all matches, be it the first, the twentieth or the last.
DeleteA player MUST be cautioned, even if the goal is disallowed, for removing the shirt or covering the head with the shirt. The referee has deliberately violated the LotG here.
I really don't understand why in the final matches they need 3 Assistant Video Assistant Referees, which make globally 4 Video officials.
ReplyDeleteI don't get that either. It seems to be a FIFA thing. Or at least they started it when they did it at the 2018 World Cup.
DeleteI see it as, to use an old phrase, "too many cooks in the kitchen".
It will be the same at Euro.
DeleteKits for tonight?
ReplyDeleteIt can't be yellow/pink because of United and Villarreal's colors, so it will be either neon blue or black kit, depending on the GK's colors.
DeleteIn the past UEFA used to mix colours. I guess black kit with blue socks.
DeleteOT: Romania - Tunisia (Edward Lennie) and Colombia - England (Arturo Brizio Carter) are today's games from FIFA World Cup 1998.

Well, the players and commentators know that it should've been a red card but "surprisingly" Zwayer, Foltyn (AR2) and Dingert (VAR) are of different opinion. Come on, being a VAR is not so difficult!!!
ReplyDeletehttps://streamable.com/ozgx23
IMO there is no need to overcomplicate things here.
DeleteOne could certainly find arguments for a YC here (accidental after slipping due to contact with the ground,...) and the non-intervention by Dingert (clear and obvious?), but in the end, the defender hazards the consequences of his tackle. I think, everyone expected a RC for that tackle in Germany.
In the second half, he missed a red card on the other side. Zwayer's again not having a great match, also not much respect for him. A lot of complaints after every decision.
DeleteIMO, Red Card ! Serious Foul Play
DeleteIncident mentioned by bingo11
Deletehttps://streamable.com/dv6if1
The second incident is rather a YC for me. The red player only wants to stop/play the ball and then hits the blue player more or less accidental with low intensity.
DeleteUEFA has wrongly reported van Boekel as Offside VAR. This role is taken by Benjamin Pagès, the assistant referee in VAR room.
ReplyDeleteAt 17:40: Did a Villarreal player try to grab/touch Turpin as he was passing by to protest a foul? I only saw it live, haven't seen a replay, but it seemed as if he reached out towards the referee.
ReplyDeleteI've rewatched it, and that's certainly what it looks like. And it seems Turpin noticed it (he turns to the player right after), but lets play continue.
DeleteSo far, a good performance by Turpin for me. He choosed a lenient approach and succeeded with that, as the players respected him and he had the full control over the match. No caution so far, but definetly some possibilities left out. Also, good work by the ARs with some tight corner/non-corner decisions.
ReplyDeleteI noticed again tonight how little charisma Turpin have and how bad the footballers respect him
ReplyDeleteHe is indeed not the most charismatic but has some presence
DeleteBut the players respect him...
It’s amazing how when referee lacks charisma like Turpin all of a sudden it’s a problem but when you are a really charismatic guy like Lahoz who likes to talk to players you also get criticised.
DeleteWell, excellent onside call in the MUN goal. Even if no replays were shown :(
ReplyDeleteLenient approach kept consistent so far, maybe it’s time to show some charisma: MUN players are way too much protesting and the game will heat up soon
I'm a fan Turpin. Never the most charismatic referee, yes, but always seems focused. His lenient approach pays out so far. Not very challenging, but sovereign.
ReplyDeleteAgree, Raymus.

ReplyDeleteMintute 84. Extremely clear red card. SFP. So obvious.
ReplyDeleteNot SFP for me. YC is acceptable.
DeleteStuds in calf.
Deleteit's the situation that Uefa rap describe as ' Border line ' in case of red or yellow card Var confirm the referee pitch decision
DeleteBorderline? I’m sorry, but wat makes you think UEFA assessed this as borderline?
DeleteIt’s a studs up tackle above the ankle and speed/intensity is high.
IMO there can only be one outcome and that’s a sending off…
If you open UEFA RAP you can see many situations like this described as 'orange' decisions
Deletesuperstar : I agree with your comment
DeleteI opened many RAP’s but I haven’t seen clear SFP’s like this one being assessed as borderline.
DeleteBut what are your arguments to consider this only reckless - YC?
Another case of borderline reckless-SFP incident where VAR advises referee to show a YC. It was a case in SF IIRC. UEFA please stop it!
ReplyDeleteThe bigger problem for me here was that the onfield decision by the referee was just a verbal warning. And just after that he was instructed by VAR to show a yellow card. Unacceptable behaviour by Turpin and by VAR... In a Europa League final match...
DeleteWe don't know this tho. VAR in these situations cannot advise a referee to show a YC. I think Turpin took care of the injured player, spoke on the mic with his assistants and came to a decision. It didn't look good, but we cannot assume to know what transpired.
DeleteHe just didn‘t see it cause he followed the ball. Pretty sure that it was Vincic who advised the YC. Should have done that faster.
DeleteWhy VAR? That‘s no VAR Situation
Yeah okay, studs with high intensity right in the calf is not a VAR situation. Okay....
DeleteOf course VAR can't do that but I'm 100% sure it was the case here and in one of the previous UEFA games this season.
DeleteI asume that it was VAR because Turpin received that message just after the clearest replay on TV. And Vincic doesn't have the possibility to see that replay
DeleteVAR cannot advise a YC here. VAR can only intervene here if they judge there was a clear and obvious error meriting a red card. The process that leads to a YC is:
Delete1- Turpin gives a foul, no card.
2- VAR deems it a clear error, recommends review for a red card
3- Turpin does an on-field review, disagrees with VAR, decides to give a YC.
That is obviously not what happened here. So, the logical conclusion is, VAR did not intervene. Also, broadcasts are generally notified and indicate "check in progress" when VAR is reviewing a play. I don't believe that was the case here.
At Emil... We all know the procedure. And that's why I am disgusted that the procedure was so obviously and cynicaly ignored.
DeleteAnd in that case even more cynical that in the end still the wrong color of card was advised :))
DeleteThere is no procedure ignored, since VAR didnt intervene. There was no message of a VAR check in progress... so there was no VAR and no VAR procedure. Stop these nonsensical comments
DeleteNothing nonsensical about the comments. But if you want to believe that it was an on-field team member who advised the YC after more than 30(!) seconds, be my guest. I for me don’t believe in fairytales anymore :)
Delete..."Anonymous" why are you being so ignorant to the fact that there's 4 people seeing the incident? Why ignore that there would have been advice from a member of the refereeing crew, and not from the VAR (since VAR is clearly and obviously not supposed to intervene here)? Why ignore the fact, that the referee himself might also change his opinion on his own upon seeing the effect of the challenge?
DeleteNonsensical is that you believe that if there was no VAR message on TV, it means that there was no VAR advise at Turpin ears!!! It is so cute how some people believe in everything. If only I could be so naive too...
DeleteThere is simply no indication that VAR did anything. As soon as the foul is called, Shaw hobbles to the trainers on the sideline, and you can see Turpin turn around and check whether he needs to allow the trainers on the field. At any rate, the card is given within 30 seconds of calling the foul. That's perfectly normal.
DeleteAs for the foul itself, I agree with the 'borderline' decision. Yes, studs contact, but not too high intensity, and the foot is not excessively high. I can live with a YC.
@MT If 4 people saw the incident then the YC would have come immediately, and not after more than 30 seconds. And what effect of the challenge are you talking about? I didn’t see blood, I didn’t see a fracture. Apart from that Turpin didn’t issue the YC immediately after he arrived at the injured player, but even later.
DeleteSo all in all I considered all these options and came to the conclusion that I think it was the VAR whispering in Turpin’s ear :)
It does resemble a decision made by Brych in UCL not long time ago in similar circumstances... maybe UEFA wants the correct decision regardless of how it was reached?
DeleteTwo questions about the late tackle of Foyth:
ReplyDelete- who advised Turpin to issue a YC? The sanction came extremely late!
- did a YC suffice for this late studs on calf tackle?
What about the situation in 51'? Reasons for VAR supporting referee?
ReplyDeleteIn my opinion if defender didn't play ball, a penalty should have been awarded.
Indeed, looking back at it. Neither one got the ball, and a penalty would have been supported. I think the Villarreal defender kicks, while the ManU player pulls out and is kicked.
DeleteThe only reason I can see for VAR not to intervene is that they deemed both players were at fault for the contact - ie, they both kicked each other with equal responsibility. I wouldn't agree with that.
I knew someone would comment this. The most readers on this blog would whistle for every contact, that would be a lot of 'killed' matches.
DeleteIMO this is just a fair challenge, football is a contact sport. Both players trying to play the ball, contact is really light and could not be avoided. Just a normal football contact, so no PK IMO.
70' AR2 froze on a delayed offside, and stopped following the play on a chance on goal. Bad practice.
ReplyDeleteGood YC to Cavani at 113'. He's been persistent in his dissent (I noted him getting a verbal warning at 65').
ReplyDeleteA bit of a sneaky hit on McTominay - potentially foul in the APP if there had been a goal/penalty - but nothing more. And correct no penalty for handball.
No comments on that late penalty appeal for handball??? Was it that clear that no one makes any comments?
DeleteThis comment has been removed by the author.
DeleteI didn't comment on the penalty shout because 1) it was obviously not a foul; and 2) even if it had been an illegal handling foul, there was a clear prior foul in the APP leading to the penalty (the hit on McTominay) that would have negated it.
DeleteWell, we were 1 shot away from a refereeing quiz question on the order of kickers once everyone has shot ;)
ReplyDeleteWe rarely see such strange and long penalty competitions (11-10) at elite level :D
ReplyDeleteEnhorabuena, Villarreal!
Thanks to De Gea :)
DeleteI think yesterday night a mediocre performance by Turpin. One clear mistake was missing a RC for SFP by Foyth on Shaw. Apart from that it became very clear that he doesn't get the respect from players that the absolute top referees like Kuipers, Brych, Lahoz and Orsato get. Just not charismatic enough, his game management just not convincing enough. Turpin is a good referee, but nothing more than that. This UEL final might be the top of his potential.
ReplyDeleteFully agree!
DeleteGood performance by Clément Turpin.
ReplyDeleteSome discutable scenes, but no one is talking about the referee after the game and this is the most important thing.
Also in German TV they were satisfied with his performance.
Clément Turpin is maybe not the referee with the most charisma, but it's his style to keep a distance to the players and it works for him and i really like it.
He is working much with his face, sometimes smiling and sometimes looking angry depends on the situation.
So, we will see what he will do at the EURO and after this the next step is for sure the CL final in a couple of years.
I have some dissence. I think Turpin had natural authroity yesterday, at least much more than lets say 4 years ago. Look at the verbal warnings of Albiol, Cavani, his calm resonance with the team managers. Overall I saw the bigger problems in several smaller mistakes, forgivable but not highest accurateness.
ReplyDeleteAll in all good for me. His goal will and must be UCL final. If he gains in seniority I think he has chances in 2023-upward
