    Jovanovic and Makhadmeh remain with one match. While a poor match was reported for the Serb, that is not true for the Jordanian.
    But it also doesn't make much sense to save Makhadmeh for later matches, because it is possible, that there is an Asian team in all of them.

    On the other hand, 3rd match for Elfath and Valenzuela. The latter was appointed on MD1 and MD2, so it makes sense to appoint him again now. Elfath however had matches on MD2 and MD3, so ends up with 3 matches in 7 days. This seems avoidable.

      Very difficult to see both directly in semifinal.
      Maybe the yellow card after OFR by Makhadmeh was not liked by Collina and Busacca?
      We explained the possible reasons for that decision.
      About Jovanovic indeed it seems as that management was a problem for him, I'm really sorry, if you go by book and you apply a strict refereeing, you can experience such situations.

      I think, in Olympics the 3rd place is at least as important as the SFs - unlike in most other competitions.

    2 out 4 assignments seem logical and acceptable. Venegas & Frappart
    I know nothing about Mukansanga. So I don't know what to expect from her.
    Jacewicz showed many deficiencies her match (Netherlands v Brasil) to have been rewarded with the top and most sonorous quarterfinal.
    I would have preferred Alves, Monzul, Fortunato or Frappart for this match.

    OFR in Canada-Brazil at approx 35' to reverse a penalty decision. AR2 may have signalled an (incorrect) offside (she lifted her flag), though Frappart clearly pointed the penalty spot. VAR seems to have shown only images of the (non-)foul.
    Good procedure all around.

      Canadian player slide tackled a Brazilian player near the end line, getting the ball first and then taking out the Brazilian player. I think Frappart thought she took out the player first.

      I'm just glad that FIFA is allowing the VAR's to properly do their jobs at this tournament.
      Unlike the debacle at the recent Euro. Where the VAR's would not have intervened. And would have found whatever reason to support the obviously wrong on field decision by the referee.

      I think it was a question of angle - I suspect Frappart saw largely through the back of the players, not from the side. Either way, the Canadian brushed the ball - did not kick it fully, so it was a very hard touch to see in real time. It was a reasonable (though incorrect) decision by Frappart on the field, and a good intervention by VAR.

    Canadian player wanted penalty kick for handling when Brazilian player clearly had her arm close to her body. If referees had a nickel for every time a player didn't know the rule or interpretation but still complained, we would all be very rich by now.

    OFR in Sweden-Japan game at 32'. Penalty overturned - two players came together off the ball in the Swedish penalty area, and the referee judged the contact accidental rather than a deliberate charge. The replays were not 100% clear IMO, but the referee evidently saw something different on review.

    Also, in 115' in the CAN-BRA game, good VAR intervention to correct a mistaken identity for a YC (the referee played advantage and gave the card at the next stoppage). No OFR (not necessary), but good, clear gesture by Frappart to show what happened.

      Well, so many VAR interventions for penalties and mistaken identities, this seems to be a totally different world than EURO. What do you think? But definitely too many mistakes by the officials in the pitch, I must say. At EURO we had a certain approach, but the clear mistakes were rare, in any case, not the same at the Olympics!
      And mistaken identity should never happen, I also know that in Italy in past seasons this typology of intervention, in case, was "hidden" (communication to referee but without making it public and without making VAR gesture...).

      It was a bit negligent, for sure, and even Frappart should certainly have kept track of the player with help of her team. Oddly enough, Fleming (who was incorrectly booked) seemed confused but did not protest overly - it's possible they didn't understand what the booking was for.
      In general, Frappart had a good game and a good foul detection, players were complaining a lot. No major controversy, though the VAR intervention in first half was justified (as I said, I understand Frappart's decision to whistle, though it was clearly a mistake).

      Now on to kicks from the penalty mark!

      I think it's GREAT!
      VAR was created and implemented for a reason. It's an added "tool" for the referees to use and to be able to depend on.

      I wouldn't say that the "clear mistakes were rare" at the EURO. There were definitely mistakes made. But because the VAR's were handcuffed. We were left to believe that the referee was correct or at least "supportable". However IMO, "supportable" doesn't always mean correct or right. But that word was thrown around and overused during the EURO to justify referees and the non intervention by the VAR's

      I disagree mostly. I think VAR was used in the Euros exactly how it was supposed to be used. Rarely and mostly when needed. Having the two or three VAR interventions per game that were seeing in the Olympics is not a successful use of var. It means the bar is too low and the officials are making too many errors.

      In regards to the mistaken identity. The players look nothing alike. Poor identification by Frappart and poor teamwork.

      Lack of dissent doesn't mean that they agree. Women as we've seen, tend to not show as much dissent as their male counterparts.

      Three stopped penalties, GKs clearly having one foot on the line at the moment of the shot. No quibbles there. Very good warning by Frappart to the GKs before the shots (including a VAR signal to show 'we're watching you').

      My thoughts on the VAR interventions, @Chefren:

      1. First of all, I would say that, in my view, the matches themselves have presented more challenging incidents than in the quite well-behaved, smart, very professional play of the EUROs.

      2. To an extent, I agree that the technical decision-making in has been poorer at the Olympics (ie Elfath’s DOGSO red card that he originally had only as SPA)

      3. I also think the VAR is operating with a lower bar for intervention here, which in general has been a positive thing. There also seems to be more of an expectation on referees to enforce the laws than there was at the EUROs, where the number one strategy was always to try to “manage it.” Again, I see this as a good thing.

      4. I would like to see the ratios of video reviews to matches at the Euros and at the two Olympic tournaments (men’s and women’s) so far. I suspect we are slightly over-perceiving the amount of reviews here compared to the Euros due to the timing (simultaneous and at weird times) of the games making it difficult to watch every game in full like some of us did for the EUROs.

    Interesting to see that we have the appointment of a VAR for Olympic tournament on 12 August in a UEFA game, this could mean that he is already not considered for the final and very likely he will leave before. There is a too short time in my opinion between the two finals (6 and 7 August) and this game (12 August, considering the long trip and the time to recover). Also, based on that, the choices by FIFA seems to be not so much strictly according to performances, if they allow that. But let's see, maybe it is not a trouble to officiate a game when back after only 3 or 4 days... I'm curious.

      My guess would be that the short time period is considered acceptable by UEFA and that they will stay in Tokyo until the end.
      And indeed, Guida and Millot are among the most used VARs at the Olympics and seem good candidates for the last matches.

    And now an OFR at 65' in SWE-JAP for a handball in the penalty area. The Japanese defender's arm was clearly extended and blocked the ball on a shot, so it will come down to whether that movement was natural in the context of the player's action. IMO the arm is deliberately extended to block the shot, and should clearly lead to a penalty.
    And now, at 67', the referee agrees and awards the penalty. I didn't see any card given. Correct OFR, though arguably the referee could have been expected to see the foul on the field. It may have been difficult on the field to judge the intention of the player (which speaks to natural v. unnatural movement), and the fact that the shot hit the arm at short distance certainly advocated against a penalty. On replay, however, IMO it was a clear and obvious mistake, and the revision was correct.

      Easy or not. I'm just at the leeway FIFA is allowing the VAR's to operate with. And I'm beyond happy that VAR is being used in the manner it is. I've long been a skeptic of system. But it being used in the manner it is at the Olympics, restores some of my confidence in the usefulness of the system.

    Two ends of spectrum: lots of very good but also poor officiating.

    Ref - superb fitness and strong, calm personality. Good warnings when needed - insist players listen. First YC was wrong (clean challenge by AUS) but good second YC for reckless arm and YC at end for late challenge.

    GB penalty in ET seemed very soft on first view (no replay seen) but supported by VAR.

    Ref/AR1 teamwork was very poor. AR1 very hesitant, lacking sharpness/focus - some clear decisions needed in front of her (eg, 80’ clear foul wrong way) and lots of throws either not signalled at all, signalled wrong way or against the referee. Hard to tell if ref at fault (insisting AR follows her?) or AR so slow/hesitant that the ref had to give something?

    At 90 minutes, as the officials came together, they appeared to have an argument??? AR1 body language in extra time then seemed dejected.

    AR2 seemed very good but, by chance, had less to do.

    Both ARs did very well with offsides - some close decisions - and coped well with delayed flags, etc.

    I feel this ref has real potential, and it would be great to have a top female ref from CAF, but some fine-tuning/coaching needed.

      I will look for this argument interceding 2H and ET between the officials...

    I think this is the first Olympics in which the top spots at the last women's World Cup determined who qualified for the Olympics in UEFA, as per https://olympics.nbcsports.com/2019/06/29/germany-womens-soccer-world-cup/, and I don't like the new arrangement. Each tournament should be a fresh slate and the teams shouldn't be determined by the last tournament. And due to this new arrangement, we're deprived of seeing two of the top teams in Germany and France.

      Replays weren't great, but looked at least supportable for charging, maybe there was even pushing.
      One could discuss, whether she should have waited for a possible advantage, but IMO better to give the penalty directly, because the attacker didn't seem to shoot immediately.

    Now Brazil are out I anticipate Edina Alves will be hot favourite for the final. Were it not for some AR1 hesitancy I'd hope for Mukansanga in the bronze medal match, but I expect that will be either Borjas or Yamashita.

    01:37 penalty removed after OFR. AR2 should have solved this situation by herself, just reporting a corner kick. Frappart whistle was in my opinion not expected so early. I don't have other footage to assess her exact point of view, but I think that this mistake could have been avoided with teamwork. With some "courage", I would say in case of such a call during EURO, VAR would have intervened, this is the classic situation in which you can't penalize defender, even though strictly according to what we saw with Rosetti, this situation could be still borderline, considering the touch on attacker as well, but it would be out of reality.

    Would be nice to see the video with mistaken identity as well...

      I think we can conclude that Roberto Rosetti wouldn't be happy with this decision :)

      Grinfeld just instantly reacts to a push incident whilst being some distance away, it is not a decision with no merit. VAR still correct to support in the FIFA vision.

      However, playing on is clearly the better choice IMO - the Mexico player just tries to 'irritatingly' position himself for the centred ball, and then falls very easily / of his own accord.

      That's dumb defending by the South Korean player. It's a highly visible two handed push with fully extended arms into the back of the Mexican player. The defender took a big risk by choosing to play in that manner.
