    Serie A referee Andrea Tardino has been ulteriorly suspended because he did not carry out the required COVID-19 tests before games, but anyway claimed the costs for them from the federation.

    He was already suspended for false expense reimbursements. His excuse was that his mother administered his expense tickets and has misunderstood.

      La notizia della seconda sospensione è scattata poco fa.. Credo che tu stia parlando della prima sospensione (insieme a La Penna, Pasqua et al), che è stata confermata nell'estate dell'anno scorso. Solo dopo sono emersi questi ulteriori reati commessi dal Tardino che hanno portato al secondo deferimento nei suoi confronti e la conseguente seconda sospensione.

      Yareboinen is a reserve referee, it is not mandatory that he be appointed.

      Indeed being a reserve referee from the beginning could also mean no appointment at all, you can see that other referees are getting appointed as fourth officials as well. However, very likely, I think he could appear in fifth place game as fourth official. We will see.

      On paper to be a reserve referee could mean to be appointed at all, but generally never happened. An official selected as reserve referee ahs always been appointed as fourth official, while Yareboinen missed all previous matches. Ok, no problem

      IMO Treimanis did very well sticking with noPK at 28' The ball was fairly played and only quite a bit later there is a natural fallow-through contact.
      94' Would have been a big mistake, so a good intervention by VAR and I dont think anyone can have an argument.
      Last clip: I don't understand why the ref blows while the ball is still in the air. The dafender cleared it to a corner and she would have been perfectly fine to blow then and not allow the corner to be taken. Or of course she could have blown directly after the foul, as 55 seconds (of 1 minute added) were already played.

      28': to be honest watching it live I don't have the perception of a clear penalty, maybe efender doesn't touch ball but I don't see any significant evidence of a foul on attacker, this can be never argument for calling an OFR, rather a mistake by Bebek, I agree with Treimanis in not whistling penalty.
      90'+4 Is that a 100% clean tackle on ball? I think that there were a few arguments to support penalty. Expected decision in this case is play on but I don't think a 100% situation.
      Not convinced by Bebek as VAR, I didn't watch games with him in charge in this role before, but it seems as he uses it with a certain freedom, without being strict to protocol.

      About the other incident, she whistled free kick at 00:57, when three seconds were missing. Then, in my opinion you should decide to allow the execution of a free kick or not, you can't whistle in such moment because this irritates players. A better management was possible she had to wait for the end of the free kick, before whistling, however merely on LOTG you can't accuse her because she indeed waited only the missing three second and she decided to end. It is a question of experience and guidelines.

    Taylor has no game in the weekend leading up to the Real Madrid vs PSG match so I wanted to bet on him being appointed for that match but realized that his AR1 Gary Beswick had a match on Sunday, so will it be a factor or AR really don’t matter in Sunday-Tuesday appointments. At least it doesn’t for some referees.

      The other option could be Orsato. My bet is also Taylor for the first game. If the standings are tight after the first game, we can expect another "upper elite"

      For my part, I replaced Turpin in the first leg due to the CWC (it would be possible, but seems unneccessary). And I reconsidered Hategan in Paris as rather unlikely - although I would still like it.

    The fact that Beath is not fourth official on the first CWC semi-final, although both his ARs are involved (reserve AR and AVAR), could indicate that he is being considered for the final and FIFA wanted to keep him away from the finalists? Fischer was selected as VAR, so what other reason can it be to use him as fourth official?

    New appointments have been released. I start to think that Rapallini and Yareboinen are not available for some reasons. Also, the fact that Turpin has been assigned to so many games as fourth official, also with Rapallini's AR as reserve in a case.

      Yes, the second semifinal appointments shows, that they are lacking some officials.
      Appointing a 4th official a day after a games as referee never happens in FIFA tournaments otherwise, I think.
      BTW, even without Rapallini and Yareboinen, I would have put Turpin as 4th in the less important 5th place game and Beath or Ghorbal as 4th in SF. Not a big problem to then work the final as referee, I think.
      And a referee handling the same team in QF and SF is normally also avoided (even at CWCs with limited options).
      It is still possible that Rapallini gets the 5th place game and then 3rd or final depending on Palmeiras, but in that case the appointments for the 2nd SF are even stranger.
      Maybe the 5th place appointment will give further indications.

    Very quick, good positioning and reaction, very often these incidents are missed by referees, in case AR1 could have helped. However, Ramos immediately detected it.

      Ramos has been showing more and more that he is the best referee in CONCACAF, first the CAN-USA WCQ on Jan 27 and now the Second Rd match. Happy to see he got a Semifinal appointment to further prove himself to the FIFA Referee Committee. If he is not the first selection from CONCACAF, I don't know anymore.

      Given the appointments we saw so far, Beath should be the first option.
      If Al Hilal in final (quite unlikely) then Turpin of Ghorbal.

    In addition to the incident, one should know whether the possible foul was inside or outside the box. In my opinion it is correct to support referee's decision if he saw exactly what had happened. I see that defender has a certain attitude to leave the foot there but it is not a very clear situation if you ask me. Also, if we analyze most of the FIFA VAR interventions, we must say that indeed in this case it is rather surprising to have such an outcome (supporting referee), but this comes from a very experienced UEFA Elite with his VAR.

    This is in my opinion a very clear RC, first of all excessive force is extremely noticeable live, the normal reaction of a referee must be red card in this case, AR2 should have informed Turpin. In addition, no chance to play ball with a direct challenge on opponent.

    Yeah It's really early to predict the names, but I guess that 35 main referees is really too much !!! If we add assistant referees, reserves and VARs we will reach the whole population of the Qatar.... :-)
    I guess that 24 main referees are enough considering 2 matches each one in the GS; in addition I think hat AFC will not deserve to bring 6 referees.
    I would say:
    MAIN REFEREES: 24
    2 from AFC
    4 from CONCACAF
    4 from AFC
    4 from COMNEBOL
    9 from UEFA
    1 from OFC
    16 reserves acting at IV official
    24 VARs/VMO

    FIFA is discussing whether to use the same number of seats as 2014 or 2018, the heads of the referee committee want 2014, but politics may want 2018.

    2014: AFC 4+1 (maybe AFC wouldn't have that extra, so 3+2), CAF/CONCACAC 3+2, CONMEBOL 5+1, OFC 1+1, UEFA 9+1
    2018: AFC/CAF/CONCACAF 4+2, CONMEBOL 5+1, OFC 1+1, UEFA 10

    The amount of VAR is more resolved, must be 24 in Qatar.
    AFC/CAF/CONCACAF 3, CONMEBOL 5, UEFA 10.

      when designating the spots, the question will also be: will we see people in double roles from the smaller countries? CAF and OFC i personally do not see any VARs? The small amount of qualified officials they have should be used as referees, i think...

      I think, e.g. Ashour, Guirat and Zourak could be selected as specialist VARs without being Elite referees as it happens in UEFA with Dankert, Irrati etc.

      Personally, I would prefer a smaller number of referees, because this should automatically mean higher quality. Even if you have 5 very good referees from a confederation with 3 spots, selecting the top 3 of them means an upgrade in quality
      Furthermore the travel distances are significantly shorter than in the previous World Cups.
      So I would choose around 24 referees + 8 reserves. Some of the reserves could bring their whole trio, so that they can not only be 4th officials, but actual alternatives in case of injuries etc. among the main 24.
      The number of VARs will probably higher due to 4 games a day in the GS - and more options from different confederations than 2018. So I would assume 16-20, maybe even the 24 reported above.

      Well, it could be quite simple: If e.g. Makhadmah and Al-Kaf are already better than Shukralla, they should be selected. If not, they have to wait until 2026 to compete for the WC again.
      And yes, the committee has to take a decision, which referee they expect to perform better in the World Cup, but this is a normal task for them.

      For WC I would prefer 28 referees, so that you can give the 2nd match of 1st round to the colleagues with the best 20 performances in 1st game

    Referee is doing a good job overall in Chelsea-Al-Hilal game, but at about 52" Al-Hilal player came in very hard with a high, exposed boot, striking Chelsea player in his boot. YC warranted but perhaps due the atmosphere of the match, almost like an international friendly, the referee kept his card in his pocket.

      If a player is going to gesticulate and dissent by word like that. It's a no brainer to caution the player. Referees all over the world at all level need to start reclaiming their authority/respect on the pitch. Enough with putting up with whining childish behavior and just standing their taking it with no reaction or consequences.

      Secondly I like the "strong" action in showing the yellow card. #Authority

      Yeah, goal line technology amazing there, as it didn't look like goal in first replays. In Chelsea-Al-Hilal match, for 52' offense, I would give YC simply because force of which player comes in with raised boot, even if force of contact isn't as great. For player management in 82-83', Mount deserves at least a stern talking to or gesture after first altercation. Without that, he perhaps felt free to engage in second altercation that led to YC for El-Hilal player.
