ReplyDeleteI've been watching a lot YT video's lately, just analyzing body languages. Its fascinating.
Question to the Germans:
Are there any similarities between Siebert and Brych, or do they have really different styles?
I would say there are more similarities than difference between the two. Firstly, I think, Brych alone has/had two different styles domestically and internationally. In Bundesliga, he is more lenient and relies even more on communication, while he is stricter and maybe also more focussed on accuracy in international games. E.g., his number of sending-offs per match is twice as high in CL (~0.34) than in BL (~0.17).
ReplyDeleteFor Siebert, I haven't observed such a difference yet.
Comparing the two, I would say, that Siebert has the even higher football understanding in terms of empathizing with players. On the other hand, Brych has the bigger natural authority, which normally increases with experience and reputation.
Both referees have their strength in finding a suitable approach for maintaing match control both in their line / level of strictness and in the communication with players, where they can be quite friendly and jovial, but also strict and distanced based on the situation.

ReplyDeleteThe difference between a domestic and international style is also an interesting discussion. I think nowadays some Elite-referees are domestically the so-called 'By the book' referees, but internationally a bit more flexible; using the yellow cards as a tool to keep control over the game.

In UEFA's site is mentioned only the red card about this incident, but I didn't see the match so. Personally RC is too harsh I see only a mass confrontation. The pitch is worse than San Siro before the break...
DeleteIn my opinion, Hans, the red card can't be questioned given that the player moved his head to hit opponent, but very often these incidents are assessed as mutual misconduct by most of people because the other player is guilty of the head - head confrontation as well, and the force of the header is not so significant. I don't know what had exactly happened before because there was a replay during the live scene so I can't say how much Lindhout could have worked to prevent that.
DeleteThe red card by itself is not a mistake, let's say, but nowadays a different management of such incident "is expected".
However never a mistake by referee, that's important to underline. Player must blame himself for his action.

what do you think, chefren, how many referees will be selected for the women's euro? 31 matches, i think you would not need more than 12-13 referees and some reserves? so this would be "half" the elite-pool...but i only see 8 quarter-finals? so i am wondering if we will see some refs either getting their "last chance" there or even an "unexptected chance"...
DeleteWe can look back at EURO 2017 to see that 11 referee were called for that tournament, and 2 reserve. So I think it should be the same this time, maybe 12 or 13 as you said, but not more tan that. And yes, "only" 8 games as CL Women's Quarterfinals are not a enough to test all the officials before the big tournament. We can assume that Frappart and Monzul, having also the chance to officiate in Men's competitions and being, without a real need to be tested for such tournament, can be excluded, so the 8 names who will get Women's CL quarterfinals will be very likely all the ones (if possible looking at nationality of teams involved) that will attend EURO.
DeleteStarting from quarterfinals in that competition VAR will be used as well, and it will be interesting to see the referees selected by committee. I ensure a detailed coverage on the blog about that.

ReplyDeleteMU's goal dissallowed after OFR, because of Maguire's offside, he didn't touched the ball, but blocked the Burnley's def.
Very similiar with the offside given against J. Ramsey in the FA Cup tie M. United vs. Villa. It is in both cases rather unlikely, that the blocked player can still reach the ball. But he was prevented from challenging and that is the main factor. +In the Villa game the block was so strong, that IMO a foul would have been called, even if the blocking player was not in an offside position.

It is also reported, that he will referee in 2. Bundesliga on Sunday and in 1. Bundesliga on the following weekend.

I really would like to know more as well, because, if I remember correectly, some days ago Zwayer said that it wasn't true he accepted money. So, either Zwayer is wrong or official DFB version is wrong. And that's not good.

DeleteWell, in the critical point about taking the money, we just have testimony against testimony. Hoyzer says, Zwayer has taken the money. Zwayer denies it. And there are no witnesses.
DeleteFor the DFB judge back then, Rainer Koch (now DFB vice and acting president), it was enough to state "it is to be assumed", Zwayer took the money and to ban him for some time.
The ordinary (public) court however ended its process due to lack of proof without a judgement.
So there is not really a chance for clarification unless one of the two changes his testimony. The current DFB refereeing leaders seem to trust Zwayer enough to let him continue.
Great news. I'm happy for him. I saw his last performance at Real Sociedad-PSV de UEL.
DeleteVery well done by Jarred Gillett in Villa - Leeds game. I do not like 90% referees in PL but I think he is quality. I enjoy watching him, including his communication, gesture, decision and reaction. I really hope to see him get more "big" games in the future

ReplyDeleteThere are some great matches on the program which require IMO at least "Medium level Elites". For example BAR-NAP and POR-LAZ.
And since Dortmund has been a bit 'unlucky' with referee decisions this season, in both domestic league and CL (leading to some mad reactions in several media), do you guys think it is likely to expect a bigger (Top 10) name for the match BVB-DOR?
I also expect Elite referees in those pairings. But it could also be a good opportunity for some of the newly promoted ones.
DeleteI rather don't expect a special treatment for the Dortmund game.
With now 32 Elite referees, it is even possible that nearly all EL R16 matches are covered by them. Especially as some referees from CL 2nd leg could also be used there.
So First group referees might be restricted to ECL.
He has never been an Elite referees, he has a very modest quality, he was included in the Elite only because he comes from a strong football federations.

Delete58' - In this case AR1 remained with the first assessment on the original pass, the header by teammate was missed or maybe he thought about a touch only by defender, in these cases referee should intervene to help assistant referee, reporting the further touch and so making a new assessment, but well, with VAR it is a more than big effort... maybe not needed anymore? :)
83' - I think even in case of offside position, player wouldn't have been punishable, because he shows that he is not interested in playing ball, keeper sees the shot when it starts, he even tries to save it, no influence.
I am not so satisfied with Jeremie Pignard's performance in Hajduk Split-Atletico. Interesting match in great atmosphere in front of 9000 home team fans (big number of fans for youth league match). I think he underestimated youth league match, it looked like he was not prepared for hot and crowded match.

DeleteThanks for the clip. UEFA reports that goal has been disallowed for the foul on keeper. It is always the same speech when keepers are involved, a soft touch or even nothing (just players close without contact) seems to be enough for a whistle. This is in my opinion an overprotection for them, as we discussed very often on the blog. A brave decision would have been to allow play continue, however, in this very difficult situation to read for AR, Philipp is right: possible offside at the moment of header but one can't be sure. Teammate can be ahead the line of the ball.
