  1. Wow, Madden is really fallen in disgrace: Malta-Estonia group D. I'm glad to ready a new name: Vijanen, I guess it is his first match with major national teams. I'm glad also about Visser's progress; Belgium is coming back to have a high level referee after good names like as Ponnet, Van Langhenove, Goethals and De Bleckeere

    1. If you watch Madden week in week out as I do in Scotland you would come to the conclusion that Madden shouldn't be anywhere near these games

      Delete
    2. Madden has announced his international retirement. He started in Malta, that was why he had this match to finish in Malta

      Delete
  2. Craig Napier (Scotland) involved in his first game since coming out as Gay. Wonder if Madden will be assisted by English VARs. Spoilt for choice as Both Attwell and Bankes have done 2 games so far as VAR

    1. Coote has done one so will probably be him.

      Delete
    2. Don't forget Gillett worked with Walsh in his game.

  3. I noticed how until now as Italian referees in nations league only Maresca and Guida have been designated and Orsato and Massa have not yet been designated. It is simply an observation that I make.

  4. Honestl, I have some doubts whether we will see all the selected World Cup referees in this Nations League in June. The Nations League is a very good opportunity to give other referees a chance. On the other hand, the season was very long and the AA+ referees may want to have a (short) vacation before the WC preparations will start on 20-21 June in Madrid.

    Replies
    1. WC referees appointed in Nations League (4 / 11):
Oliver - Taylor - Siebert - Frappart. And all Matchday 1.
MD1 gives them the opportunity to have a short break now, before Madrid.

Vincic is appointed to the IC PO and therefore out of NL?
Mateu and Makkelie had a PO game early June and maybe also some rest now.

I think we can expect some of the other selected WC-referees in MD4 (the refs with ‘early’ vacation) :)

      Delete
    2. I know that AR's team Makkelie Jan de Vries and Hessel Steegstra are on holiday now. Next appointment for them is 21 june in Spain for preparation WC.

I think this weeks of are for the most WC referees

      Delete
    3. Is Madrid only for world cup referees or all the Elite ?

      Delete
    4. Only for selected world cup referees, leaded by FIFA

      Delete
  5. Very particular to read again Makkelie's name as VAR in UEFA competitions, after a so long time! We have Artur Dias as well in this role in another game.

    1. He is not a listed VMO within the FIFA list, is he?

      Delete
    2. UEFA doesn't seem to care at all about the FIFA VMO list...

      Delete
    3. Especially with Gözübüyük since their mutual understanding is not optimal

      Delete
    4. Makkelie was/is one of the best VAR in Europe. Remember the periode when he was the regular VAR for Kuipers.

      Delete
    5. He is also one of the best assistant referees. And if he decided to become a footballer he would be one of the best for sure.

      Delete
    6. @15:35, you must be kidding? :)

Gozubuyuk was a goalkeeper in his youth. Makkelie a right winger when he played football. If I remember correctly, both were always more passionated about refereeing than playing football. Refereeing was never a plan B.

Interesting fact: van Boekel was a professional football player. Pretty rare!

  6. Q to readers from Belgium:
I noted that Lawrence Visser has been paired with VAR's from France. His name looks very Dutch/Flamish though. Is he a fluent French speaker, does anybody know?

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. Lawrence speaks English very well. As for French, he can communicate without any problem but he keeps the Dutch accent of course.

      Delete
    2. Thanks! I know that Belgium is a bilingual country and many Flamish know French as well. I wonder if they communicate in French or English.

      Delete
    3. English tends to be the neutral language for airline pilots and they have to communicate with people who speak different languages. I'm guessing it's the same for international referees.

      Delete
  7. Good game for Andy Madley

    ReplyDelete
  8. Great to see Andy Madley has a game.
I always think he should be pushed in the PL a bit more as he is a safe pair of hands for most matches IMO. Maybe with 3 retirees we will see him in bigger PL matches next season.

Additionally, I assume UEFA is not bothered if Fourth officials are not FIFA refs as I have seen Robert Jones and John Brooks both appointed in the last weeks.

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. UEFA are not bothered if they are fifa or not same as the VAR's

      Delete
    2. @Matthew completely agree about Madley, he seems talented but must prove this with more games. I’d sooner see him in ‘bigger’ games than the likes of Tierney.

      Delete
  9. No Bebek or Jovic so far?

Bit strange if you ask me...

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. Jovic VAR LIE - TUR, referee Novak Simovic (SRB)

      Delete
    2. Very strange, and again without Peljto.

      Delete
  10. I think I haven't seen Donatas Rumsas for a while, cmiiw he was observed by Rosseti and in the last UECL match if I'm not mistaken he gave a disappointing performance. Do you think he can still be a elite candidate who will be promoted tin the next few years?

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. No, Rumsas was observed by Rosetti in UEL MD1 Monaco-Sturm Graz, where he had an expected performance in an easy game.

He had a quite challenging game in Vienna in UECL R16 (observer Hauge), but I think his performance was better than what many people think. I think he's a quite talented referee and possible Elite material.

      Delete
    2. In my humble opinion was the performance of Rumsas @ Rapid Wien - Vitesse UECL R16 one of the worst referee performance of this season. I think Hauge wasn´t impressed either

      Delete
  11. Bebek needs to retire. Waste of a badge

    ReplyDelete
  12. An interesting fact is that many Germans AVAR these days are Assistant referees in European competitions: Mark Borsch, Rafael Foltyn, Stefan Lupp etc.
I have not noticed that these things apply to other nations.
    Any particular reason for that?

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. There are also several examples from other countries (Praprotnik, Betts, Borkowski,...)

In Bundesliga, the AVAR normally is a specialized AR, but I think, this also applies to other leagues.

      Delete
  13. Does UEFA really need Sanchez again after his so so performance in Bel-Ned? Bye bye performance principle.

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. This also means two Spanish referees in a row for Germany, which is normally avoided. So maybe Sanchez is a replacement here?

      Delete
    2. Particular that Hernandez Hernandez, no games so far, is out as fourth official, it is a rare role for him. This makes me think that very likely he has a game on next days, otherwise I think he would have got this one! And yes, too strange that Sanchez Martinez has two games in a so short time, very likely one of them is a replacement.

      Delete
    3. Especially again a spanish referee for Germany after Del Cerro Grande…

      Delete
  14. Another good appointment for Marciniak with England - Italy, big match for a referee who will be at WC, that's also because one of the two teams involved will not participate. We can indeed see that a name like Orsato is used for Montenegro - Bosnia, expected to be hot, but very far away from spotlights. This strategy by UEFA committe goes on.
Great appointment for Di Bello as well, he will be with Massa assistant referees, let's see whether the latter will get something more on next days. First appointment for Irrati as VAR in this edition of Nations League and he will be with Sidiropoulos.

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. ARs still rotate in Orsato's trio 5 months before WC? Why not using both WC assistants?

      Delete
    2. I don't know, this is strange, in past we saw different things with preselected trios. BTW the other WC assistant was appointed with Guida in Croatia - France. An argument can be that this is a UEFA game, so different choice... while in FIFA qualifiers he has the WC assistant referees...

      Delete
    3. I think that Guida in Croatia France asked his usual trio for very challenge and decisive match for his chance to come élite... anyway for sure in future every WC trio will not change anymore

      Delete
  15. Normal appointment for Halil Umut Meler in rotterdam

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. And Meler again in Kuip stadium. Hope he has a better performance than the one with Feyenoord in UECL

      Delete
  16. Any remark from Tantaskev's performance yesterday in the Final AFC WC play off ?

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. Rock solid, only small mistakes in a fairly easy match. HLs available upon request.

      Delete
  17. Just curious, does anyone know if Orsato's fourth official Marchetti in MNE-BIH related to UEFA deputy secretary-general Giorgio at all?

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. Absolutely not. I don't say that it is a very commoin surname in Italy but surely you can find many people, no relations between them. I talked about him in a post a few weeks ago, but I can't find it again ;)

  18. Observer Ellingham busy with games on consecutive days in Podgorica, u21 and UNL

    ReplyDelete
  19. Any info for official list for Euro U-19 in Slovakia?

    ReplyDelete
  20. Big test for Di Bello imo, even if it's ”just” UNL games between the countries of the British Isles are usually hot

    ReplyDelete
  21. Marciniak is still on top

    ReplyDelete
  22. Orsato is good choice for what potentially could be hot match.

    ReplyDelete
  23. Aureliano VAR in Ireland for Di Bello after having worked with Hennessy in Far Oer - Luxembourg, maybe they made the trip together! However there are some days (maybe too many?) in the middle and there is another assistant referee as AVAR.
Btw some of the AVAR we saw, Longo and Paganessi, are assistant referees that should leave the panel of serie A and B this season, so a last experience for them in this role before quitting...

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. Can't they become specialist AVARs in Serie A?
In Germany, there are some retired ARs, who do exactly that.

      Delete
    2. "AVAR specialist" here would be seen as not enough for a career like they had, in case only VAR, but it is not possible for assistant referees.

      Delete
  24. Where are the Norwegian referees?

    ReplyDelete
  25. Missed handball offence in SUIESP by Gözübüyük and Makkelie? It looked so.

      Delete
  26. Not a very convincing performance by Gözübüyük so far

    ReplyDelete
  27. not a particularly bad one neither, but I agree. he has problems with foul detection, missed a YC against spanish GK and let a few other opportunities pass by. match could get out of control.

How should we see this line drawn by Makkelie?
    https://pbs.twimg.com/media/FU1eKAVXwBUgdnG?format=jpg

The edge of the ball is an offside line, but I can't see the right point because of the player's head. A player's toes suspected of being in an offside position rest a lot on the line and rather look like an offside position.
For me, this image seems appropriate to say, "I can't get any proof that this player is in offside position." I think it would have been better not to publish the image with this line.

  34. SUI - ESP 6' and 7'.
Two interesting situations in a row.
At first, keeper impedes the attacker to execute a quiick throw-in, with an ermpty goal. I always thought about this scenario, despite of the fact that game is stopped, in reality keeper prevents an OGSO but LOTG can't provide more than a YC at maximum for this behavior (wasting time, unsporting behavior.. ecc.).
Then, the penalty appeal for handball:

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. I understand your philosophical point on 6', but it's important to note there was no OGSO present. Three defenders were back and the Swiss player didn't even have an open teammate to throw it to.

That said, no yellow card?! That's horrendous. It is blatant cheating from the GK.

      Delete
    2. Yes, RC not possible, because it is not an offence leading to a free kick.

The handball looks punishable. Even if you say, it is not deliberate, it still remains an unnatural position.
However the difficult part could be to be 100% sure, that it actually touched the hand, which I am not after seeing the angles in the clip.

      Delete
    3. Indeed YC for GK. I've got the feeling looking at the body language of Gözübüyük that he wanted to solve it with personality. Maybe some point he was coached on to improve it. The "old" Gözübüyük would have given a YC. On the other hand, it is just min 6. If you have to start a match with a YC for such a situation you draw a line which can give you problems later on because of the strict line.

With respect to the possible handball. I can't a very clear handball situation. The hand is in the area of the ball, but these two angles don't show clear evidence that there was a handball. So support for the decision to play on.

      Delete
    4. How far into our own refereeing bubble and out of touch do 'we' have to be to NOT issue a caution in the 6' situation, and then even offer a (pseudo-)intellectual defence of it too. Football deserves better. It is a terrible decision, simple as that.

      Delete
    5. YC is the expected decision here. Game heated up immediately. Top refs recognize these moments.

While watching, I had the feeling that MANY small decisions were taken against the Swiss. Fouls (21 vs 10) and card statistics confirm that tbh.

      Delete
    6. I've rewatched the first 12 minutes of the match. One can debate about the not given YC to ESP #23 in min 6. One referee we praise for player management and autority when not giving it, now we critise because of the same reason.

My personal view after a view incidents. In relation to player management. And no (pseudo) intellectual defence, but on how in the Netherlands things are taught and explained.

Min 2. Correct free-kick for ESP. Small dissent by SUI #18. Verbal warning correct.
Min 4:40 Correct free kick for SUI. Small dissent by ESP #9. Correct verbal warning.

Min 6. Small holding and blocking by ESP #23 before throw in. Perfect moment after each team got 1 verbal warning before to give a YC for dissent/blocking.

Min 6-10 a lot of small fouls or contact moments with a lot of irritation and theatre by players. All to influence the referee.

min 10:40. Foul by SUI #8 on ESP #9. Mandatory YC not given. Ball was not in reach of play for SUI #8.

This last moment was for me much more a moment where the YC was mandatory to keep control off the match and respect by the players. Definitly missed chance to draw a clear line to the players.

  36. Unconvincing last minutes for Verissimo in Norway, at first a penalty to be whistled, in my opinion, in 86', and I would also have expected VAR intervention, then a few minutes later simulation, for me wrong. Contact from behind can be seen, maybe you don't want to whistle penalty, but it was never simulation.

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. In 86' the replays don't really show any leg contact, I think. And the upper body contact would only make a soft penalty IMO, so fot me not a clear penalty, although it looked like one in the live picture.
Also the simulation is not that wrong IMO, as the player exaggerates the contact (more a touch than a push) and maybe tries to pretend a tripping. However a YC is not really expected in such situations, I agree with that.

  38. problems for Gözübüyük after final whistle because he didnt let a corner kick to be executed (which was fine for me) and then the referee was confronted with mobbing and didnt show a YC despite visibly going for the YC twice. Not a very good impression.

    1. I can understand the critics. IMO better to let Switzerland take the corner kick. Additional time (+3) was over, but Gozubuyuk also booked a player during injury team and when Spain finally took the freekick, another minute had passed.

      Delete
    2. I can understand it too, but my point is more his management of the extreme dissent of swiss players. they ran at him and mobbed the referee. According to guidelines, a YC must come here and Gözübüyük also made the impression of wanting to show one but finally decided otherwise which is not the image I expect from an elite referee. Body signals and final decision didn't match here.

  41. OT: I'm glad that someone brought up the AFC U23 game between Turkmenistan and Iran handled by Aussie Alex King because it aroused my attention too (I'd add borderline SFP case carefully checked by VAR in 1H additional time to the mentioned situations). Following that, this morning I stumbled across a very interesting documentary following King during an A-League game he was reffing, where he stated sth self-reflective and quite remarkable(ly open) - "I might not be the best referee technically, but my man-management skills get me through tough situations". That was certainly coherent with what I saw in the TKMIRN game, but overall, my impression was really positive: Australia has a huge talent in this thirty-years(!) old official! His ability to connect with players (remember, across cultural lines in TKMIRN too) was extremely impressive, and I expect that the technical bits will improve with the great time that he has. I will watch him closely in following years. Making a more general remark: to be honest, I expected to see many more referees like King in the VAR-era of football refereeing (managerially excellent, with the big calls watched over, and corrected when necessary, by the VMOs). In reality, it seems to me that with the big calls taken care of, VAR has facilitated a much more 'lazy' management of the referees - certainly in UEFA anyway - and has lead to an overall poorer technical handling of the matches (IMO), compared to what we could have hoped for anyway. Being fair though, I guess the development 'lag' from national associations is to be completely expected for still some years, and we may well see many more referees with a 'profile' like King in the future.

At least from my end, I hope that is the case!

      Delete
    2. Almost a carbon-copy of the foul by the Saudi player for which Arturo Brizio Carter sent him off at WC 1998 (for those with a long memory :)). Ronaldo's (lack of) reaction to being cautioned says to me that CR7 feels he was a bit lucky not to be sent off by Jug, and I'd agree with him in that case. As observer, I'd strongly praise a RC given here! However, I guess in reality we are looking for a bit more in modern days to reach SFP than this tackle.

      Delete
    3. I think a consequential difference with the 1998 tackle you allude to is the position on the field and, therefore, the intent of the tackle.

In 1998, that tackle was about stopping a dangerous opportunity. It was a desperation launch to prevent an attacker from turning a corner. Therefore, it just had a lot more force in the result because of the speed of the two players and where they were going.

Here, Ronaldo is lazy more than anything. It's in the defensive third and he just sort of throws himself in there in a perfunctory mode. His slide makes his momentum continue into the defender who, after playing the ball, is simply just trying to keep moving and avoid the challenge. There's just not as much intensity or force or, yes, intent, in the challenge.

They look the same in a lot of ways but I think the distinction makes them different. So different that red was right in 1998 and yellow is right here.

Also, now in Italy he is working as Head of Technical Department of AIA, the role in which Trentalange became an extremely important observer and FIFA instructor. So in this way he has more time to observe without having a national committee of referees to handle, the perfect condition for being more accurate as observer.

    6. A very long story that still lasts today, with Orsato having officiated again Inter after that time, almost 5 years, only once so far. He missed a very clear YC, he was about to give it, but then he renounced, it would have been the second and the player from Juventus would have been off. After that, Juventus made an incredible comeback and they won the game in the last minutes, then after that winning also the title (it happened on April, last matchdays of serie A). Many fans stated that it was the mistake deciding the title, Orsato was persecuted by angry fans, he had also troubles with his family, a TV show called "Le Iene" is still trying to tease him after so many years. There was a more than meticulous and obsessive investigation about the dialogue with the VAR, Rizzoli, at that time serie A referees head, was interrogated, it is more than a long story... strange that you never heard.
But some Italian things maybe don't leave the borders :D
In my opinion the mistake was extremely clear and very bad, a reckless challenge he didn't recognize because too close to incident, catching rathee the particular than the overall situation (this was the reason), but for sure we can never say it was a deciding mistake for the title, even in 10 men, everything could have happened. Just unlucky Orsato to make that mistake exactly in that game and with that timing...

This argument that nobody protests and so it wouldn't be a clear and obvious mistake has beeen heavily criticized, mainly because we could also say that most of players and fans don't know law of the games, so it's up to referee to check them. 81. I think Mete Kalkavan will be seen more often as a VAR. He did a good job
