  1. Referee chief offers very referee-critical journalist the opportunity to referee an insignificant match himself in the last round of the season... and he refuses :D

  2. I read that she whistled the end 7 minutes before and then game had to be resumed. Unknown the reason for that. Waiting for more detailed particulars.

  3. From Nigeria - Chile, Ferrieri Caputi:

    Still handball issues...

  4. To continue with what Chefren said a comment above another handball. Very difficult to spot the touch live from Di Bello
    Sampdoria Roma PK

    1. Another very good call by one of the best Italian VAR, Aureliano. He had already a similar incident in a previous game, Milan - Roma, also in that case he called referee for an OFR due to a very minimal touch by arm. It is clear that it's impossible to spot such incidents on the field by referees, and I must say that these calls could be (but only as concept) against the common idea of clear and obvious mistake.
Indeed the coach of Sampdoria protested because according to him it wasn't penalty. Of course he is wrong, but if we think about the situation we have the idea of something very soft to call a penalty... almost no changes for the direction of the ball...
Nobody can notice such infringments without technology, but yes, these are the law of the games...
This OFR can't justify a negative assessment for officials because simply impossible to see.

  5. Firstly no proof, whether it touched the hand from those pictures.
Secondly the arm position could (should?) be seen as part of the running movement, i.e. natural. Probably not in Italy though :)
Thirdly, not a shot of goal, so the YC can be discussed. Maybe still a promising cross, but rather looks like going out of play without the contact.

  6. I rather tend to not post Polish clips to not bother you too much but this is simply too big to be ignored. ;)

    Referee: Paweł Malec (non-FIFA)
VAR: Tomasz Musiał (UEFA 2nd Category)

45' PAI - step on foot, no VAR intervention

70' PK given for push in the back, overturned after OFR

One can discuss about the first scene although I think it's quite clear that even accidental step on foot is a foul in such scene and VAR intervention is required, imo.

As for the second one, sorry, but I don't want to use very strong words, so I just ask:
    - how can you deem this penalty call a clear and obvious mistake?
    - how can you, as a referee, be so weak to change this decision after watching one replay?

Musiał has always been deemed the most lenient, players-friend type of referee in Polish league and he missed many red cards in his career but it's just another level. Przesmycki controlled him well - Musiał tried to have the same approach like other referees - but under Mikulski he does what he wants and after such (VAR) performance he's just got one of the best R32 games of Polish Cup as a reward.

    1. Well, you don't bother with clips, so feel free to post when you want!
About the incidents, I think the reason for calling referee in second case is easy to understand (at least for me): he assessed as not significant the push, thinking about a normal contact and not enough for a penalty. I just underline that for some Italian standards one could agree about that...

About the first incident, to me definitely less explanations, but indeed it should be as you said, the fact that it looked extremely unintentional. One could say that it was attacker putting his foot under defender's and so there was this step... but still penalty to be whistled of course, and very clear mistake by VAR. The annulled penalty can find some people agree with the decision, but let me clarify that according to protocol is surely another mistake to intervene!

    2. About the second, “assessing the contact as not significant” IMO can only be an argument to support a referee when not whistling a penalty on field. Unarguably there is some kind of a push, and not shoulder to shoulder, so the only thing VAR can do is to support the penalty.
When starting to “improve” decisions instead of correcting clear and obvious mistakes we enter an area which is clearly beyond the scope of VAR protocol at this moment.

    3. Thanks for your opinion!

Indeed, it's not about whether we personally agree or not with this push being enough for a penalty. It's about intervention being clearly re-refereeing the game in this case, what VAR should avoid at all cost. The contact is clear and it's against the back of attacking player, so there is no single argument to intervene. You can't intervene, because "it's not enough in my opinion" if you have: push (1) in the back (2) arguments pro penalty.

    1. As the original referee was never published, we can't know.
However, since he was among the referees skipping MD1 and 2 and working only as VAR at that time, it can be that he has been confirmed. The observer is confirmed as well.
