Three German referee teams travelling to Italy this week.

DeleteFrench referees in England or with English teams is also a too frequent occurrence - now Delajod, Brisard, often Turpin.
And of course the Spanish refs travelling to Portugal.
Indeed, that's also because very often teams from the so-called "big federations" get referees from the same "big federations".
DeleteMaybe less noticeable in CL and EL, but evident in ECL, take as example the game in London, indeed you have Delajod (FRA).
I think it should be a record for Peljto (but not the first time over the years, we can remember Hategan as example in past) with 4 appointments in a row in 4 matchdays. Quite sure one of them was a replacement, maybe the last one before this new assignment.
ReplyDeleteA signal of good performances for him, but in last game both assistant referees with evident mistakes and VAR had his work.
As for the rest, this time I think mostly regular assignments without too much to say, Gözübüyük is back in Poland as neutral venue for the Ukrainian team. Sidiropoulos in EL, surely a more appropriate competition for him at moment.

DeleteVery weird. Aliyar Aghayev (Azerbaijan) with Turkish VAR and Ali Palabiyik with Italian VAR Iratti. As a Turkish who lived 11 years in Azerbaijan, even though we are speaking %70 same language (both languages Turkic Language) with Azerbaijani people, still it is hard for Turkish people to understand Azerbaijan Turkish. I believe would be more ideal whole Turkish crew and Aghayev with Iratti.

Surely the advantage and then two cards for different players to be issued together caused some issues... he was convinced player from Frankfurt was not booked before. If players from Spurs hadn't insisted, I think that either VAR or othre officials should have informed him...
Unusual situation, but correct decision. However, the card management i.e. lack of concentration and the team work, were not so good as it seems the referee forgot about previously issued disciplinary measures and the team was late to remind him about it - just like Chefren mentioned.

I have the impression he was completely lost in this whole situation: just look at the expression on his face when first approached by Emerson Royal regarding the SYC. And after that, when realisation came through, a certain look of shame on his face and mimics. I feel so sorry for him here, definitely not a pleasant situation to experience, for any referee.

Poor time management of the Slovenian ref as well. Only 3 minutes of added time is close to ridiculous after Midtjylland stealing lots of time and Obrenovic slowing down the game with many and long conversations and warnings.
DeleteIMO one of the baddest performances so far this season. And match deciding too; 2-2 came out of a wrong free kick. Furhtermore: foul detection was horrible, time management dramatic. Gave the Danish side exactly what they wanted.

Remarkable that Scandinavian Referee yesterday night commented on the quality of the performances of 3 referees at the same time. If you’re not able to watch an entire game it makes no sense to question the objectivity of other people.

ReplyDeleteAwful game from Sidiropoulus , think he got saved by result that both teams was happy with. Can not understand this referee, he gets so man new chances but always look unsure with poor body language and foul detection. Not to speak how many mandatory cards he miss.
ReplyDeleteRaczkowski very very good in hot challenging game. Correct both pk and red card(sc yellow). Overall very good did maybe miss 1 of 10 mandatory cards.
Stegemann with a penalty in Rome, very long VAR check because it looked like a possible simulation, I think VAR spotted a touch, for my taste still a too soft call. What I didn't like is that Stegemann booked defender right after the confirmation by VAR about penalty, he didn't give the best impression. Either he was unsure about the call or VAR informed him he had also to book player.
ReplyDeleteThis is a very common approach in The Netherlands (and I would guess in Germany as well). The referees still decide for themselves whether they think it’s a YC and if they do, they often wait until VAR confirms the penalty decision (this saves taking back the YC if VAR finds a reason to cancel the penalty), probably completely different to southern Europe (although I remember Rocchi doing the same in the infamous Chelsea - Ajax)

DeleteI’m not sure how you come to the conclusion that this is common practice in the Netherlands. To the contrary, Dutch FA requires their referees to always take the complete decision. Only issuing a sanction after VMO’s have finished their check will lead to deduction in terms of the mark.

Yes,I think that most of the time when Italian or Spanish team that are passionate maybe too muchare involved and German ref is handling the match,most of the time we see plenty of cards and controversies.

It seems to much for them to handle passionate teams after they are used to cold teams who play clean in bundesliga. But lately I have seen that top referees in bundesliga giving a lot more cards then before. Check last games from Zwayer,Osmers,Siebert,Stegemann they are giving more cards then la liga or seria A referees and that never happen in previous seasons.
ReplyDeleteI must say, I did not like the performance of Obrenovic. Late decisions, bit too much yellow cards to my taste, very very long warnings, and just a lack of authority on the pitch. Time management was actually very bad.

Palibiyik has an easy match in Eindhoven, but two very good early cautions ensured a fair match.
Berlin vs Malmö minute 70: Unbelievably clear foul by the attacker but he still got a penalty. Luckily VAR told the ref about it so it was changed to a reckless foul by the attacker.
ReplyDeleteVery Strange Situation in Berlin. First possible Foul on Haberer not whistled by stavrev. Then he gave a penalty two Seconds later for a Foul on thorsby who made the foul himself in deed. After OFR he gave no penalty but he wasn't shown the pictures of the scene with haberer. then he gave also a yellow to thorsby for the foul which was definitely exaggerated in my opinion. Sorry, i have no Link but it was about Minute 70 or so.

Hearing Interviews after the game I think all Players and Trainers Said that the Referee was "unruly" (Berlin Trainer) or similar thinks and i agreed with that because of the big decisions and the very easy (Not wrong) yellow cards.

This time at least I can understand the reason of OFR and indeed it looks to be handball for controlling ball, but also in this case, the 100% of evidence is missing and strictly according to protocol, the intervention should be assessed as wrong. What should we expect at WC in Qatar by FIFA VARs? Checking every doubtful decision,with many and long OFRs especially regarding handballs, like in these situations at Women's U17 World Cup?

There were also other moments in first half in which referee was busy with calming down players, here some examples and the subsequent decisions. In my opinion an excessive use of whistle trying to call players, but definitely not so much working.

Tricky situation, I think at the end there isn't evidence of contact, but VAR must support exactly for that (missing the contrary evidence). Very long check and I can understand why. Then, as I said yesterday, YC shown only after VAR confirmation, in my opinion wrong management, if we remember what Rosetti has already said in the years, referees must decide before VAR. He was hesitating, in case of simulation he would have gone to monitor and then he would have shown the card only to attacker, too easy to act in this way... all can be referees at high level... ok, the decision about penalty had been taken, but not enough at this level.

As you can see, game was never played in 4 minutes and more. Once game was resumed after the fifth minute, immediately half time whistle. I really can't believe that, but it is clearly related to German referees and their management of added time in Bundesliga... it looked like for "safety reasons" he decided to end because unable to go on. A strong referee would have ended first half at 45'+8.
About the decisions one can discuss, but for me these things even become secondary, there are more important aspects... referee not ready for this game, but to the background he was coming from.
Ok, players didn't help him at all, but he had to show his presence, to me a very weak display.
I don't have time to comment on everything in detail, but the last video says it all, I'm afraid. If Stegemann was this passive from the beginning, then I'm not at all surprised he completely lost control here. Yes, the players are fully to blame for their childish behaviour, however to show such a lack of presence and authority on a level this high, and from a potential Elite referee, is worrying, to say the least. It's like having no referee at all, players were doing what they wanted. And on top of all that, the complete lack of lost time compensation like this is something unacceptable on any level of professional football, Euro Soccer Ref is fully right in his comment below.

I just watched the incident about the end of 1st half and can't agree.In my eyes players of both teams are not at all interested in playing football anymore. Therefore i can understand blowing for half time without letting play the time wasted by players of both teams.

I agree!!!. He was right in two penalties and sent off a player for 2YC correctly. There were 7 YC all of them correctly shown, but yes... he took time showing the red card in a multiple caution situation (after a good advantage he cautioned two german defenders). That´s not fair!!!. he should be marked with a 5.0 or 6.0. maximum ;)

Referee Pignard calls him and captain of Strasbourg and shows with gesticulation that he should be sent off but he will give them last chance. I am not sure Lannoy and Garibien will like this but this is result of all media witch hunt on french referees because of many red cards. This is crystal clear second yellow card and even Pignard knows that but still do not take it.

ReplyDeleteThis is the same referee that did not showed yellow card a month ago in game PSG-Brest to Kimpembe when he pushed his hand and scream at him but he did not had guts to show him yellow because it would be second and red. He seems to have problem to take second yellow cards. This is pity because he is otherwise promised referee.

DeleteMaybe he was. But Kimpembe situation and yesterdays challenge from Le Marchand which was almost for red card was two crucial mistakes. You can not defend. I don't know if problem was PSG to big team or yesterday first half home team and penalty to so it was to much for Pignard? Anyway he showed weakness , 2 big mistakes in short period where he had all time in world to reflect and take decision. There is no chance Turpin or Bastien would not showed second yellow in both case, as more obvious yellow cards you will not have.

I think in this case the fact that it was INSIDE the box facilitated VAR intervention, in the meaning that outside the box, VAR should have thought about a possible RC for SFP. Nevertheless, the latter option can't be denied, in my opinion, calling this one as totally missed incident just to issue a RC would be still understandable.
I think Hussein went with YC due to the lowered head by attacker, but still extremely risky and dangerous challenge, nobody would have questioned RC.

Video says everything, but again I want to underline how much difficult are handballs, and how many just based on perception assessments we see by referees. They just see a player who tries to block a shot on goal moving arms, and, regardless of the real contact with ball, they think it was by arm. That's incredible if you ask me, most the decisions are based on something that don't exist. Since it is so common, I think that something should be done to help referees in this regard, but today we can say thank to VAR...
Both decisions were wrong for the same reason: POSITIONING in a set piece (corner kick).
DeleteSomething to improve from the VAR is the time of reaction from them (first situation). It took a lot of time before the game was stopped. During these time USA team had chances to build up a goal scoring opportunity. It would have been better to say to the Ref: "stop the game" immediately in a neutral zone if the VAR has a "strong feeling" about the PK.
Remember, the last situation in Porto-Leverkusen with Taylor, when there was a PK (handball) not given initially, and then german team scored in the opposite goal. In these case it was a very tricky handball and a fast counterattack, but in England-USA the VAR should have stopped the game much before.
Poor decisions by Riem, anyway.

New ligue 1 referee Mathieu Vernice keeps to impress . Only 29 years but already shows to have what it takes to take big decisions. Not afraid to take early in the game if mandatory cards and have no problems to show second yellow or red cards even under big pressure . I will say it again he is only 29 but shows such calmness and overall great positioning and quick decision taker. I am very glad that he have strong back up from Garibien after media was tough on him because 4 red cards in same game.

ReplyDeleteQuite challenging game for the Albanian in San Sebastián, we can say that everything happened in first half, but this was enough to say that referee had many things to do. The Moldovan team played in a very rough manner and this led to many fouls and cards to be whistled and issued by referee. Basically, I think he did well, there are some situations in which you can understand that he has very good skill in reading of the game. He can be supported in the major incident of the game, the sending off for second YC early in the game, already in first half. There are some points for improvement as well. At the end I think the away-tem can't complain too much about having been reduced in ten men. With a different approach, they would have avoided that.

In the first case, I think referee should have avoided to make the advantage gesture, because a few later he stopped play and he assigned a free kick for that foul. Very clear reckless action, stepping on opponent, as replay show. So, a good decision at the end, but on paper, having made the gesture with hand for advantage, he shouldn't have stopped the game immediately, but just booking player at the next stoppage. All would have been OK without making hand gesture. At the end I know that this can be a very harsh criticism and maybe more on form, but improvement is surely possible. Second advantage, 28', very good, nothing to say.

The decision could appear soft if one looks at the reaction of Real Sociedad player, pretending a more serious hit on chest, it was a very soft touch by arm on him, but still enough to say that Spanish player was prevented from reaching the ball in what we can assess as close to SPA scenario. Long ball and quick attack, here the intention of player is enough to book him, in case of more evident foul the decision could have been sold in a better way, indeed you can see which reaction had the Moldovan team and the involved player who didn't want absolutely to accept that. To me, a more than supportable decision. Maybe a better body language while sending player off would have been a good choice, referee looked to be a bit nervous, but I can understand why - definitely too many protests.

ReplyDeleteI really wonder what planet UEFA are living on sometimes. Seeing Chefren's Jorgji clips (thank you!!) again, like Sidiropoulos, I saw the paramount example of a second category official. Is visible that talent-mentors improved his gestures, presence and so on a little bit, but this really is the equivalent of 'papering over cracks'. One *cannot* push referee x or y "because they are quite a nice guy".
ReplyDeleteEverything is fair game with 🇮🇹🐑 (I agree clown is (way) too harsh) - even when AČ tells him to push a ref from a country he (threatens to) choose the wrong one, committee members can get their mates to the top, and everyone knows the unwritten rule about Italy (Van Boekel's non-intervention in Milan was no big deal for them), Slovenia (Visser's disallowed goal in SVNNOR is, well, interesting..... nobody commented about that when I posted a clip). For sure they took a good step at summer course but more I think about it, maybe it was a mandatory step to ensure that motivations weren't completely annihilated?

I cannot provide any video, but on Friday, in Bundesliga, there might have been a record for the quickest VAR intervention after a check for possible handball penalty (VAR: Bastian Dankert). There was a handball incident in the penalty area, referee Badstübner did not see it and let the game continue. VAR told the referee to stop the match only few seconds (maybe 10-20) after the incident occurred and then invited him to have an OFR. I cannot remember that I have seen such a fast intervention yet.

Otherwise, penalty and borderline YC/RC depending on whether we 'erase' the defending player committing an offence from our imagination of play after this offence (RC) or not (still able to challenge the attacking player, YC).
DeleteAs for the second incident, I think the expected on-field decision was a FK to defending team + RC. I agree with an OFR regarding the restart. And then, the referee is entitled to make optimal decision regarding other aspects like disciplinary sanction as well. One can discuss if such 'retaliation semi-kick' without a strong contact should be punished with YC or RC. Nowadays, the strongly preferred option is YC though.
OT: Anthony Taylor gave a red card to Jurgen Klopp at around 85'. It looked like Taylor missed a foul on Salah, and earlier in the game, he didn't call a two handed push in the back on a player who went flying. I asked about why English referees haven't advanced recently to the upper echelon of elites in UEFA, and I think it is because the style of refereeing in the Premiere League is just too permissive, which hurts their international appointments. Taylor's performance today is a case in point.
ReplyDeleteAgain agreed. Taylor's approach was amongst a myriad of stuff in the Premier League games today which are textbook examples of how *not* to referee a football match. We always did it 'our own way', and it was obviously never perfect, but at least in yesteryear we had excellent(!!) managers on the FoP like Alan Wiley. Nowadays, my feeling is that we watch officials wearing 'referee costumes' rather than 'referee kits' when handling PL games.

Anybody watch the full match and able to resume the French WC ref's performance?
I watched the full match and he's doing well... He's alert to potential brawl and managed the reactions of Gigot's red card pretty good so no further damage followed. He communicated well with PSG's coach regarding his reaction and the coach seemed pretty satisfied with his explanation. In so few cases he's a bit lenient but overall, he's fine.

He was really to lenient, missed 3 big mandatory yellow cards in first . Then he did not showed any yellow to some players that made 3,4 fouls in row who was not for yellow but after same player did it you have to show him card. I am sure that he is the reason why Gigot got red card and almost big mass brawl when Marquinos wanted to start big fight. This was so close to escalate only because of Turpin and his lenient style.
Gigot made 3,4 fouls before this situation and only 3,4 minutes before he went crazy on Messi but nothing from Turpin.
It is really pity that he does not protect players who want to play like Messi,Neymar. Only month before WC he let Marseille players to do what they want and then got this crazy tackle from Gigot.
Awful to see referees that does not want to show early cards at any cost. We would protect players and got mote attractive games if referees did their job and show if mandatory card even in minute 1 and not go after how early in the game it is.
Tackle on Messi from behind with two feet and goal scoring chance in minute 30 to not show yellow card is awful. Neymar clear slap in the face not even a foul etc.
This is why I will always admire Italian old school refs like Collina,Rocchi,Rizzoli they do not care how long in the game we are if it is for yellow card then it is a yellow card showed.
