2022 FIFA World Cup - Referee predictions - Matchday 1

The big tournament in Qatar is coming and, after the success of the blog at EURO 2020,  we have organized again the predictions' game for you. Feel free to participate.

You have to guess the exact referee for each game by filling in a form. Just insert your name, or, if you want, a nickname (it must be always the same for all your future predictions) and then for each game just select the referee

Send your predictions here:
*time is over*

The first deadline for all games of Matchday 1 will be known when the first names will be published. The predictions sent after that (official time will be checked) will not be accepted.

Points will be assigned according to the following pattern:

10 points for having guessed the exact referee of a match
5 points if a guessed referee for a game will be appointed as fourth official
3 points if the appointed referee is from the same confederation as the guessed referee
2 points if a referee is appointed in the other game of the group
1 point if a referee is appointed for the same matchday

A special thank to Philipp, who once again is here to help us and he will be responsible for collecting your predictions.
The modules for next matchdays will follow in due course.

  1. Is it possible to see what i predict. I forget to write on paper what my predictions were?

    1. I just imagine you addressing to your observer: "Is it possible to see which players I cautioned? I forgot to write on my cards what my cautions were!" ;-)

    2. Noooo Peter, it is always the opposite. They always asked afterwards to me which players i booked, because he (the observer/coach) was writing down some comments and didn't see which player is booked in that situation. ;-)

    6. It is great to see this game still going strong. I ran the calculations for the 2018 World Cup and the guesstheref wesbite and there is a button to allow the forms program to send you your submissions. It needs to be enabled by the form creator. I took some time away from the website and game to pursur my own refereeing career but am always around if you need a hand.

  2. same here.... is there maybe an option that you get your answers automatically in email or something?

  4. OT: Has anyone a report of team Makkelie during Ajax-PSV? Seems like he lost control several times (big mass confrontations)?

    1. Not a very extensive report, but I've seen the match.

Makkelie started really strict, not allowing too much and didn't use advantage. In my eyes the right approach for this much.
Around minute 30 he started to let loose of his strict approach, but instead of letting loose gradually he directly let loose, which resulted in the confrontation.
Makkelie also seemed to set the goal of giving as less cards as possible. Something I can understand in a heated match, but at some point you have to change your approach. Makkelie kept on refusing giving yellow cards, except for the unavoidable cards.
It's not that Makkelie had a bad game, but he did lose control. this match.

Summarized: Foul detection was good and he kept his calm as we are used of him. I just he think he was too mild with his card management, which resulted in multiple confrontations.

    2. There was one escalation during the match and a big one after the final whistle. In my opinion, the first escalation had nothing to do with the applied line by the referee. With the stricter line, the players reacted frustrated. With the more lenient line, players were also frustrated.

It was a fiery match from the first whistle. A 'fighting football' game with a bad quality of football, a lot of fouls, a lot of theatrics, a lot of hotheads, and lots of provocations. No referee would look good in a match like this. For sure, it wasn't Makkelie's best game, neither his worst. There were no controversial moments. Team referee didn't influence the end result. Dutch media doesn't blame Makkelie and his team, they blame the players. The players have a responsibility as well, and yesterday they were horrible role models for every young kid. :S

      Delete
    3. Agree unknown. It was not Makkelie that lost control but the 22 overgrown toddlers out on the pitch claiming to be professional footballers. Their conduct was appalling and it's good to see the Dutch press telling it as it is - they were disgraceful role models and every one of them should hang their heads in shame. Not a lot team referee can do when the players have no intention of playing football and every intention of fighting amongst themselves. Horrible game to referee.3 on-field participants wanted a game of football, the other 22 looked and acted like overgrown toddlers who had eaten too many sweeties and not had enough nap time and they completely ruined the game with their tantrums, pushing each other and the 2 displays of toxic masculinity as they squared up to each other. I will say the 2 ARs were very quick to get onto the pitch and try and help Makkelie restore order in the kindergarten, good teamwork and support. Not a game that any referee could really shine in.

  5. Dear Community.
I present to you the referee of the final: Szymon Marciniak.
Remember this post when it's Christmas. But you can already congratulate me now.

    1. Frankly, I have the trust to give him to handle any game, I would have no fears with him in charge. His form has been incredibile this year, absolutely a pleasure to see him at work. The best referee in Europe this year, in my opinion. However, the frontrunner should be Alireza Faghani.

      Delete
    2. I agree 100%. By far the most outstanding for some time now.

    3. Everything can happen at the World Cup. Unfortunately, great performances in Qatar is not all that counts (Faghani 2018...). We can't deny the political influence.

It's a bit useless to choose a Final referee based on just a few games in group stage. I assume FIFA/UEFA don't just focus at the last group stage games; rather a longer period, knock-out games, play-offs.

Personally I hope it won't be a UEFA or CONMEBOL referee.

Clement Turpin is my prediction for the opener. His appointments in the groupstage have been so-so. Game in Liverpool didn't need him, the game in Madrid was a away-from-spotlight-fight for the 3rd place.

      Delete
    4. I went for Frappart for the opener to show to Qatar and other nations that don't really look on women as equal.

      Delete
    5. Or Frappart as 4th official ;)

      Delete
    6. I think it will be Ali Faghani or Victor Gomes for the final. Faghani deserved it last time & Gomes must be a front runner, especially since his surprise (to me at least) announcement of retirement.

      Delete
    7. I think Faghani is right but Gomes No... The other candidate is from Concacaf.. Choose one.

    8. @Hussain - I have to admit a complete ignorance about the Concacaf refs! You'll have to help me out.

    1. Well, yes, obviously, because they are leaving to Qatar to attend at the preparatory seminar, together with all the others referees. Don't understand what youean by "thinking their decision".

  7. Publishing my prediction just to avoid the same problem of Timo and Eric :)

Just having some problems with UEFA referees, not too many matches without an european team this first matchday, I think different confederation rule will be ignored 1-2 times with UEFA referees.

    1. I thought about putting Beath on USA - Wales (for the English language commonality), but then I realized he is the perfect ref to save for USA - England. For the language reason, and also he is skilled enough for such a big game, has confederational neutrality (as much as I don't think that should matter), and has a resume big enough that the crazy medias of both countries wouldn't bat an eye.

  10. OT: Was wondering if anyone on here uses a molten valkeen whistle and if so where you got it from?

  11. Here goes:

    Qatar - Ecuador: Turpin (FRA)
    Senegal - Netherlands: Orsato (ITA)
    England - Iran: Rapallini (ARG)
    USA - Wales: Gomes (RSA)
Argentina - Saudi Arabia: Sikazwe (ZAM)
    Denmark - Tunisia: Ramos (MEX)
    Mexico - Poland: Faghani (IRN)
France - Australia: Al Jassim (QAT)
    Morocco - Croatia: Oliver (ENG)
    Germany - Japan: Makkelie (NED)
Spain - Costa Rica: Valenzuela (VEN)

    Switzerland - Cameroon: Taylor (ENG)
Uruguay - South Korea: N'Diaye (SEN)
    Portugal - Ghana: Escobar (GUA)
    Brazil - Serbia: Marciniak (POL)

A few notes on the omissions:
    - Having not picked Elfath for MD1, I would put him on one of the Group A games for MD2.
    - I am deliberately saving Beath for the MD2 game between the USA and England.

    1. I watched the calendar of the 2nd and 3rd matchday; there are more opportunities for Uefa referees keeping the confederation neutrality rule. So good to save them for the following matches like as for example:
      QATAR- SENEGAL: MATEU LAHOZ
      TUNISIA-AUSTRALIA: OLIVER
      FRANCE-DENMARK: TAYLOR
      ARGENTINA-MEXICO: MAKKELIE
      SPAIN-GERMANY: MARCINIAK
      JAPAN-COSTARICA: VINCIC
      KOREA-GHANA: ORSATO (2nd)
      IRAN-USA: TURPIN (2nd)
      WALES- ENGLAND: MATEU LAHOZ (2nd)
      KSA-MEXICO: SIEBERT (2nd)
      CANADA-MOROCCO: OLIVER (2nd)
      CROATIA-BELGIUM: TAYLOR (2nd)
      CAMERUN-BRASIL: MAKKELIE (2nd)
      SERBIA-SWITZERLAND: MARCINIAK (2ND)
      GHANA-URUGUAY: VINCIC (2nd)
To me Kovacs and Frappart should act as 4th official only

    2. Big names:
BEATH is suitable for ENGLAND-USA AND POLAND-ARGENTINA
FAGHANI is suitable for MEXICO-POLAND AND PORTUGAL-URUGUAY
BARTON is suitable for SENEGAL-NETHERLAND AND POLAND -K.S.A
ELFATH is suitable for BRASIL-SERBIA AND KOREA-PORTUGAL
RAPALLINI is suitable for PORTUGAL GHANA AND TUNISIA-FRANCE

  15. OT: Mr Blatter's interview with the Swiss media has (once again) nicely confirmed the French political influence and the "it's all about money" statement.

The interview puts Turpin's appointment for the 2022 UCL final and the invivation for the FIFA CWC in a new/different light.
Turpin was heavily pushed in 2022, and I keep wondering: for what purpose? In my view, this all has everything to do with the tournament in Qatar. What's in store for him? The opening match is a possibility, but who knows what else...

Anyhow, the performance principle has been pushed to the background, but we already knew that. Moreover, I'll be curious to find out which country/countries should be kept satisfied in 2023. ;-)

  17. @f, i think you have some problems with Kovacs. why, he should be only the 4 official? give me a reason. if you forget, i remind you that Kovacs whistled UECL final lthis year. because the game in Leverkusen? also, Vincic had bad games, but nothing happened with him. and now Kovacs is back on track. he had good games in domestic league.

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. Absolutely none problem with Kovacs; full respect to him and to his performances. In my opinion one referee should whistle 2 games in the GS otherwise it make sense to stay more than one month in Qatar. So to me 24 officials should be appointed as main referee, while the remaining 12 as IV official. In my opinion most of COMNEBOL should act only as 4 but at least one from Uefa as well. And among all Uefa, Kovacs in my opinion is latest of the pool

      Delete
    2. Considering the higher amount of referees brought this year, I think there will be many referees with only one GS game before returning home. And that even without taking into consideration FIFA will probably look for dead rubber MD3 games to be given for the three females.

I expect maybe Ma Ning, Mohammed, Conger, Kovács, Ortega, Matonte, one of the two Brazilians or Argentinians, at least two of the African trio Gassama/N'Diaye/Sikazwe to be the candidates for 'one game and go home regardless of performance'

      Delete
    3. So you really expect to see Siebert in 2 games? I really doubt, despite all the politics.

      Delete
    4. @Matei14 I wouldn't discard it, but IMO whether Siebert gets a 2nd game or not will depend on its 1st game performance.

      Delete
    5. @Quilava Why? Why Siebert would not be in the list above for 1 game candidates? But you put Kovacs there? With all the objectivity, it's not fair, at least I can't find logical arguments for this.

      Delete
    6. @Juan With regard to non-UEFA/CONMEBOL debutants, my eyes are on Escobar and Elfath from CONCACAF, Gomes from CAF and perhaps Beath from AFC. But performance (and politics) will tell!
