The big tournament in Qatar is coming and, after the success of the blog at EURO 2020, we have organized again the predictions' game for you. Feel free to participate.
You have to guess the exact referee for each game by filling in a form. Just insert your name, or, if you want, a nickname (it must be always the same for all your future predictions) and then for each game just select the referee.

The first deadline for all games of Matchday 1 will be known when the first names will be published. The predictions sent after that (official time will be checked) will not be accepted.
Points will be assigned according to the following pattern:
10 points for having guessed the exact referee of a match
5 points if a guessed referee for a game will be appointed as fourth official
3 points if the appointed referee is from the same confederation as the guessed referee
2 points if a referee is appointed in the other game of the group
1 point if a referee is appointed for the same matchday

DeleteNoooo Peter, it is always the opposite. They always asked afterwards to me which players i booked, because he (the observer/coach) was writing down some comments and didn't see which player is booked in that situation. ;-)

Not a very extensive report, but I've seen the match.
DeleteMakkelie started really strict, not allowing too much and didn't use advantage. In my eyes the right approach for this much.
Around minute 30 he started to let loose of his strict approach, but instead of letting loose gradually he directly let loose, which resulted in the confrontation.
Makkelie also seemed to set the goal of giving as less cards as possible. Something I can understand in a heated match, but at some point you have to change your approach. Makkelie kept on refusing giving yellow cards, except for the unavoidable cards.
It's not that Makkelie had a bad game, but he did lose control. this match.
Summarized: Foul detection was good and he kept his calm as we are used of him. I just he think he was too mild with his card management, which resulted in multiple confrontations.
There was one escalation during the match and a big one after the final whistle. In my opinion, the first escalation had nothing to do with the applied line by the referee. With the stricter line, the players reacted frustrated. With the more lenient line, players were also frustrated.
DeleteIt was a fiery match from the first whistle. A 'fighting football' game with a bad quality of football, a lot of fouls, a lot of theatrics, a lot of hotheads, and lots of provocations. No referee would look good in a match like this. For sure, it wasn't Makkelie's best game, neither his worst. There were no controversial moments. Team referee didn't influence the end result. Dutch media doesn't blame Makkelie and his team, they blame the players. The players have a responsibility as well, and yesterday they were horrible role models for every young kid. :S
Agree unknown. It was not Makkelie that lost control but the 22 overgrown toddlers out on the pitch claiming to be professional footballers. Their conduct was appalling and it's good to see the Dutch press telling it as it is - they were disgraceful role models and every one of them should hang their heads in shame. Not a lot team referee can do when the players have no intention of playing football and every intention of fighting amongst themselves. Horrible game to referee.3 on-field participants wanted a game of football, the other 22 looked and acted like overgrown toddlers who had eaten too many sweeties and not had enough nap time and they completely ruined the game with their tantrums, pushing each other and the 2 displays of toxic masculinity as they squared up to each other. I will say the 2 ARs were very quick to get onto the pitch and try and help Makkelie restore order in the kindergarten, good teamwork and support. Not a game that any referee could really shine in.

Frankly, I have the trust to give him to handle any game, I would have no fears with him in charge. His form has been incredibile this year, absolutely a pleasure to see him at work. The best referee in Europe this year, in my opinion. However, the frontrunner should be Alireza Faghani.

DeleteEverything can happen at the World Cup. Unfortunately, great performances in Qatar is not all that counts (Faghani 2018...). We can't deny the political influence.
DeleteIt's a bit useless to choose a Final referee based on just a few games in group stage. I assume FIFA/UEFA don't just focus at the last group stage games; rather a longer period, knock-out games, play-offs.
Personally I hope it won't be a UEFA or CONMEBOL referee.
Clement Turpin is my prediction for the opener. His appointments in the groupstage have been so-so. Game in Liverpool didn't need him, the game in Madrid was a away-from-spotlight-fight for the 3rd place.
I went for Frappart for the opener to show to Qatar and other nations that don't really look on women as equal.

ReplyDeleteThe interview puts Turpin's appointment for the 2022 UCL final and the invivation for the FIFA CWC in a new/different light.
Turpin was heavily pushed in 2022, and I keep wondering: for what purpose? In my view, this all has everything to do with the tournament in Qatar. What's in store for him? The opening match is a possibility, but who knows what else...
Anyhow, the performance principle has been pushed to the background, but we already knew that. Moreover, I'll be curious to find out which country/countries should be kept satisfied in 2023. ;-)
Football is finished if Turpin gets the final. Its no longer about performance at all.

@f, i think you have some problems with Kovacs. why, he should be only the 4 official? give me a reason. if you forget, i remind you that Kovacs whistled UECL final lthis year. because the game in Leverkusen? also, Vincic had bad games, but nothing happened with him. and now Kovacs is back on track. he had good games in domestic league.
ReplyDeleteAbsolutely none problem with Kovacs; full respect to him and to his performances. In my opinion one referee should whistle 2 games in the GS otherwise it make sense to stay more than one month in Qatar. So to me 24 officials should be appointed as main referee, while the remaining 12 as IV official. In my opinion most of COMNEBOL should act only as 4 but at least one from Uefa as well. And among all Uefa, Kovacs in my opinion is latest of the pool
DeleteConsidering the higher amount of referees brought this year, I think there will be many referees with only one GS game before returning home. And that even without taking into consideration FIFA will probably look for dead rubber MD3 games to be given for the three females.
