Delete@RvT If Makkelie is the best performing candidate out of the possible contenders then he is a clear candidate. I find it ridiculous that some feel he can’t referee a PSG game. As you say incident was two years ago and the final will be in a neutral venue. Is it that he can never referee PSG ever again? Absurd.

CL final?
Danny Makkelie is the favorite at the moment. Since - in the absence of English clubs in the semi-finals of the Champions League - it seemed that the path for Taylor was straight and empty, and the risk of having to change the cast of the final seemed to be negligible, Makkelie could be appointed to referee one of the semi-finals. Thinking about the Dutchman, UEFA could downplay the potential risk of "burning the candidate to the final", because it was rather unlikely that Taylor would lower his form and Makkelie would stumble in the semi-final. Yet the former has already happened, so UEFA does not want to risk the latter.
In this situation, Makkelie will almost certainly not referee any of this year's Champions League semi-finals. Precisely so as not to risk conflicts with the future finalist, which could possibly exclude him from the final if Taylor was indeed removed from the list of candidates.
Marciniak, as you mentioned in one of your posts, 99% in the second leg in Spain, and Orsato in the second rematch.

I must compliment the Refcom here. Pretty confident we will see Vincic and Makkelie as well, in the Europa League (returns?). Where they previously always shielded final candidates, they now work in the semi’s, just like last season. That is fair, because there is not a clear candidate. Taylor's season hasn’t been great. Vincic’ appointments never stand out. And Makkelie some bad luck with PSG.
ReplyDeleteVery good choice to me. That's what I have predicted and I had choose. So taylor should be (expected the unexpected :-)) ruled out from final. If we consider Orsato and Marciniak for the return leg, we have 50% Vincic and 50% Makkelie for the final match. Personally I hope the dutch

ReplyDeleteI can't really rule Taylor out for the final, because I think this year chance is rare for him cause no English teams. But I think makkelie has a bigger chance now. Makkelie might be appointed in any uefa semi finals who knows? If so we might see a clatenburg 2 and if makkelie is ommited then 💯 he will get the final.
ReplyDeleteI'm just wondering why Michael Oliver is so far behind in a direct comparison with Anthony Taylor: Oliver led a quarter-final at both the last EURO and the last World Cup and was therefore more successful than Taylor. However, the international finals go unilaterally to the latter. Is it conceivable that we all overlook Oliver and that the time could be ripe for him this time (in any final)? However, I don't follow international performances very closely and therefore can't judge how realistic this would be at the moment.

DeleteSome people in the comments seem to forget that there are still 2 Italian teams active in Europa League.
DeleteRosetti wouldn’t be Rosetti if he didn’t send two of the highest experienced and trusted referees to Bergamo and Leverkusen.
In other words: if Marciniak and Orsato are appointed in Champions League, we can expect Makkelie and Vincic in Europa League. Nothing more, nothing less. Italians and Germans are out. I can’t see Nyberg, Oliver or Spanish. Maybe Kovacs if he doesn’t get a final.
I think Vincic will avoid German teams, so he will be on the Atalanta-tie.
Oliver might have an appointment on Thursday though, cause he isn’t a 4O to Taylor in Dortmund.

Let's wait until the end of the semi-finals and final. That's right, I wrote that Taylor has the CL final. It's different, it has SF, but it can still have the final, although now Makkelie is closer, it all depends on the teams that will be in the final.

Samuel, you understand that we have only to believe in what you write, when you say "official confirmation", it's easy without a real proof, all could write everything and then after that, "oh no, it's changed". So in my opinion, even if what you said is true, I don't even want to question about that, maybe keeping it confidential is better, because, you can see, it's hard then to try to convince people that what you had said was the truth. Personally, unless you are close to committee member or friend with one of them, it's very hard to believe that you were informed about all the plans, TBH!

I agree with Chinese Association, not a clear and obvious mistake, wrong intervention by VAR, also, definitely too long time before calling.

For all 8, off the top of my head at least 5. Joyce and Breakspear are (deservedly) selected most years. Mather and Speedie last year had a 2nd leg together. Smith and Gill were predictable names due to the path they’ve had. And if Will Finnie’s not had a playoff game before I’d be very surprised! But maybe I’m wrong with that one.

ReplyDeleteGood performance so far. I'm at the stadium and Taylor and his team are no factor, keeping everything calm. Great on-site call from Beswick before the goal. Looking forward to another exciting 45 mins. Btw. stadium is exceptionally loud today. Don't know if this is a factor for the communication within the team...
ReplyDeleteI agree, Taylor and his team with a very good performance so far. I like both his foul detection line and disciplinary measures up to this point. All KMIs solved correctly IMO. He seems to be in full control over the game. One minor complaint could be his positioning at times: he got hit by the ball once and seemed to also interfere with play a bit once or twice, but nothing too bad for me.
DeleteAs for the stadium atmosphere, even on TV it's something special, I can understand what you mean by "loud". However, there is someone in the stands with, if I can hear correctly, a Fox 40 Sonik Blast whistle, who gives his best to confuse the players, it seems.
Yeah, we hear the whistle it in the stadium, too. Got to be somewhere on the East or North stands. But doesn't seem like it's bothering the players so far.

DeleteYou are probably right, Euro Soccer Ref, although I cannot be sure there was no input by AR2, however there was certainly a very long delay (too long, if I may say). And I agree with you fully, such practice needs to be stopped. As for the YC itself, I'm in favour of it being punishable more than it being an accident tbh, however it can probably be interpreted both ways.

ReplyDeleteOverall good performance by Taylor, not a lot to report. Correct no penalty call in 63', some minor mistakes in foul detection and/or disciplinary control.
ReplyDeleteWe can say that Taylor had a rather good performance but in my opinion the standard of officiating was not high for him today. No control issues, major decisions were correct, but very often players showed that they didn't like his decisions. Could have done many things better. Nevertheless, if we look at both first legs games, we must praise committee for the very good job, waiting for next week's maybe even more challenging return legs.

ReplyDeleteJust me talking about 3 points I noticed in both CL games.
ReplyDelete1. The games in Munich and Dortmund are a perfect example of refereeing quality beyond major decisions. Both Turpin and Taylor got everything significant right and had no control issues. But while Turpin had an (almost) faultless foul detection, was not only accepted but basically deemed always right by the players themselves. Had great positionioning and a great feeling for the game. On the other hand Taylor never achieved more then normal acceptance, was a little inconsistent in foul detection, not as confident with his cards. And actually had a very mediocre positioning. I would really be interested if committee really cares with such officials, or if they simply want no noise.
2. With the (mysterious) Rosetti observation in Munich. Does there really need to be a real reason for it. Yes EURO opening or Spain v Italy looks possible. But both wouldnt really require an observation (not really out of Turpins normal range). I cant see Turpin getting the EURO final, unless 2-4 other referees are unavailable for different reasons. So maybe, Rosetti simply noticed one of his best officials is not super motivated rn and needs a little boost. Turpin surely a name UEFA needs in the next years.
3. The role of the Fourth Officials was very significant. Especially Eskas, but also Schärer were very active with the coaches. Being extremly firm about minor things. Eskas also giving very visible input on fouls twice in the first 20 minutes. I have the feeling we will see that at the EURO, also as a way of minimizing VAR interventions, rather using input from the sidelines.
Hmm, I wonder why you are so sure about Turpin not getting a EURO final. When I make a short analysis I really see him having a good chance
ReplyDeleteFirst name that comes to mind is obviously Marciniak, best and most trusted referee atm, but he already did World Cup final 1,5 years ago. Will they really appoint him again?
Then Makkelie, with already a semifinal during last EURO. He's still a very safe and trusted name, despite some troubles in the last few years, but will they really give it to a Dutchman again?
The next one is Orsato. His personality and qualities as a referee are unquestioned, but he's 48 years old and clearly struggling physically in the big games. I don't like the view of him in a final, it's too big of a risk if it goes into extra time.
Then the only two referees with at least a QF during WC or EURO are Vincic and Oliver, but with where they are now, I don't see them as real candidates.
Turpin, Taylor and Siebert did KO matches as well. Out of these three, Turpin is definitely in the best place now, so that's why he would be my first choice.
Referees with no KO experience that come to my mind are Kovacs, maybe Letexier? The latter won't be ahead of Turpin, maybe Kovacs, but too inconsistent, too big of a risk.
