  1. OT: Today, the Bundesliga had its first public announcement of a VAR decision by a referee (in Leverkusen-Hoffenheim).
"Penalty was checked. According to the pictures, there was an offside position, therefore the decision is no penalty, offside."
The referee was 28-years-old Robin Braun in his second trial game in the 1. Bundesliga.

  2. OT:

Plenty talking points in Italian big matches on Sunday.

Derby della Madonina was hadled by Chiffi.
Most of the crucial decisions went against Inter.
Couple disallowed goals but probably the biggest talking point is no penalty call for Pavlovic's tripping on Thuram.

Then we had Derby del Sole,Roma vs Napoli.
    Ref was Fabbri.

There we had plenty situation against Napoli.

2 or 3 penalty shouts that were not called,1 very not convincing dive that was convicingly called by Fabbri and foul drom Kone that could have easily been RC.

All in all refs will for sure be talking points after Sunday in Italy.

    1. AIA didn't want to show the VAR clips about Milan - Inter possible penalty. For me this was a VAR mistake because all the focus was on Theo Hernandez who made a rather fair tackle, but Pavlovic from behind caused a very clear penalty and somebody realized that only a few minutes after the fact. It's incredible that for the situations that one can assess as crucial mistakes even from VAR, AIA remains silent.
About the other big incidents, correctly disallowed two goals for offside and one can accept the call by Chiffi about the third disallowed goal.
About Roma - Napoli: for me no simulation, but it can be OK no penalty, soft contact on Politano. Despite of YC given, VAR didn't intervene because no clear and obvious mistake. Then, more to discuss what about McTominay later, maybe more penalty than play on but again not a clear and obvious mistake. Not sure referee correctly assessed this one from his positionn. Rather close to satisfactory performance by Fabbri but nothing more, some decisions looked to be just random ones and not made after a real process, honestly. About Kone you can accept YC because he slipped on the ball before, but indeed very, very borderline, given point of contact.

    1. So, the most interesting assignment of CL games will be the one in Munich for return leg, with Velasco Carballo committee member as observer. As early prediction, one could say Peljto, with the chances for the Bosnian to get a final either EL or ECL this season. Other options: Nyberg or Schaerer, to check their current form. Hard to think that there will be a less experienced referee. In Champions all Elite are expected.
Kuipers in Europa League can be there for a Category 1, and it would be a big assignment for the referee, in case, given how much important are such play-offs. There are many options here.

  5. I saw your comments on the Inter penalty incident which for me was very difficult to spot live, so nothing to say to Chiffi, rather the VAR not intervening.
Another clip I want to show in Serie A, asking again for your opinion :

    Parma-Lecce : Minute 30 refereed by Sozza.
Penalty whistled for handball after VAR check on Baschirotto.
Do you guys think it was supportable ? Seemed extremely close in distance.
( Thank you Chefren for always checking me by the way, love the blog and the effort put )

    1. You are welcome.
Here the video of the penalty after OFR in that game with Sozza.
      https://streambug.org/cv/1a1b75
The distance if considered as single criterion isn't enough anymore to forgive a player. I think the arm was in a rather open position, making the figure of defender bigger. The decision was assessed as fully correct by AIA.
It was very hard to see in the middle of penalty area.
During OFR, you can hear Lecce players (faced by AR1 and FO), they wanted the possible previous foul on the other player before (pushing / charging to jump).

  8. PSV - Feyenord KNVB Becker - interesting situation on 10', long VAR review, but on-field desicion stands for a PSV a goal and a possible offside. I don't know current recommendation for such situations, but in my eyes the player in offside has influenced goalkeeper view, and I'm surprised it's not an OFR, but maybe I'm wrong in my interpretation..

    1. The LotG state the following with regard to interfering with an opponent:
“preventing an opponent from playing or being able to play the ball by clearly obstructing the opponent’s line of vision”.

Therefore, just “influencing the goalkeeper” does not suffice for assessing the position as punishable.

Attacker indeed seems to have ‘an influence’ on the goalkeeper, but on the other hand there’s some distance between attacker and goalkeeper and ball doesn’t travel very close to attacker.

But apart from that, at least in the live broadcast, no conclusive evidence was shown which proves the attacker is really in the goalkeeper’s line of vision. It appears that way, but one can’t be sure without the central behind goal camera angle. So an OFR wouldn’t have provided conclusive evidence to the referee.
All in all IMHO too inconclusive situation to deem it a clear and obvious error on field.

Yes, I agree with RefsNL. I think the player in an offside position is, generally, close enough to the keeper, but not close enough to the ball (In reality they appear to be about the same distance apart, so there is some room for interpretation. But generally speaking, I think it's considered that the distance to the ball must be closer.)
And he's not moving towards or away from the ball. It's hard for me to see any reason to consider him in the way.

I find it really annoying how the word 'willekeur' is used too easily and too often.
