  1. Feyenoord protested to UEFA over the red card that Marciniak gave to Feyenoord's Read after the end of the match, but was turned down and he is given a one match suspension.

In my opinion, it was a red card that was given very easily, which is something that I have rarely seen at the top level in Europe in recent years. However, the response of UEFA's disciplinary committee is certainly understandable.

  2. Very good game for Eskas in Rotterdam. An Italian team at this sage is a remarkable achievement for a "different name". But, and I was already convinced about that, one must add that Inter is the least problematic team and the game against Dutch side is definitely not a top match. They were very lukcly to qualify for this stage, and I think they don't have big expectations (another argument for allowing a referee with relatively less experience than others at this level).
Then, again Massa with PSG, but in this case even with a committee member. Following Guida injury, now it seems that Massa is UEFA nr. 1 and it will be interesting to know who will attend the FIFA seminar for WC,now it's very close. Nevertheless, one could say that the French club seems to have a "selected pool" of officials inside UEFA, the appointments for the team from Paris are not that much different over the months. Here the easy game against Stuttgart allowed the Italian to be appointed again with them. Then, we should wait to know what about the future of the Italian referee.
The rest with Zwayer and Oliver are to me normal and regular assignments, it can be very challenging for the German after the famous and extremely challenging last display between the two clubs, officiated by Makkelie. But to me, it's not a full big match or something that could cost reputation, differently from the very big and hot clashes like Madrid's dery and so on. In the end you have always Spanish side as very favorite one. We'll see.
And about Oliver, perfect game for an English referee, being in the middle in a Bundesliga tie.

    1. Its not surprise the treatment of Massa. 8 CL games, while other big names has 5 or less cl games.

It isnt a big name Massa, not for a big tournament as WC2026.

If Massa is the standard of the uefa referees than is it quite problematic with the development of the Uefa.

But with Rosetti as a boss, it isnt surprising.

      Delete
    2. Very useless comment. This is your opinion, without any support of facts.

      Delete
    3. You can check how many CL matches he has whistled compare to other referees like Makkelie, Marciniak, Nyberg, Zwayer or Letexier.

It is his 8 cl match even so for Oliver. The treatment is different compare other referees

    4. Peltjo 6
      Oliver 8
      Letexier 5
      Turpin 6
      Zwayer 6
      Massa 8
      Makkelie 5
      Eskas 6
      Marciniak 5
      Kovacs 6
      Vincic 7

      These are only cl appointments.

    5. @RvT: This says nothing if you don’t know the background.

Appointments are political. It is like an apple pie, distributed pro rata. Top-5 countries get more games than small countries. Thus, Italy has a fixed number of CL spots. Massa benefits from Guida’s injury and Mariani isn’t fully trusted. That is why we get Massa all the time.

Oliver benefits from the fact that Taylor can’t be used with certain teams (f.e. Italian and German teams) and they are with just two Elites.

Marciniak just 5 games, however he missed the first part of the season due to injury.

Turpin and Letexier had less games than Oliver and Massa. No surprise with 3 (!) French Elite referees, all performing well. The same applies to the Germans. They have to “share” the portion of that Apple pie.

I don’t have a clarification for the lack of Dutch referees though.

    6. Thanks Unknown... Your explanation is very loud and clear 😀

  3. Chefren, sorry but i totally don't understand your comment about a round of 16 in the best competition between te best european clubs.... is not a TOP match anymore???? I think you already forgot that Feyenoord kicked out AC Milan?? This is not an interesting match for you? I think the Italian side must not underestimate the Rotterdam side, you see what happened with Juventus and AC Milan, lucky or not.... both are out!

    1. Yes, but we are not talking about a very big level, that's what I wanted to say!

      Delete
    2. Eric, come on… They (Feyenoord) barely have 11 fit players. A loss by Inter would be a disgrace. On paper, this is one of the ‘weaker’ games of the round imo.

Perhaps we should argue about the complete lack of Dutch referees.

      Delete
    3. Ref..... the returns are not there yet :-)... and don't forget Feyenoord in Europe is overperforming.......big win over Bayern Munchen and Benfica and iff i remember well nice draw with Man City....not the smallest clubs i would say, @chefren... no its not Barca-Real...... but still a round of 16

    1. I can’t follow the English VAR assignments though!

At first Attwell, used to be a trusted VMO, but it seems he was
removed from the scene? Then they’ve tried Salisbury, now Gillett?

      Delete
    2. It's indeed a bit strange about Attwell, because he had a quite good period in which he showed to be reliable, having solved the old and very early troubles. Then now out again from all games, but without very evident mistakes like the ones he committed years ago.
Also, Bankes and Salisbury after the shocker in Ajax - St. Gilloise should be out for a very long time, but more generally a problem with English VARs has always existed, and it's hard to ignore. This depends on the totally different approach of Premier League, if compared, one could even say, to the rest of the world.

      Delete
    3. I think it would be very harsh to "suspend" Salisbury for the error in Ajax - Union given he was only AVAR, he was likely mostly monitoring the rest while Bankes were checking the penalty incident

      Delete
  5. By the way, who are the observers for Rome -Bilbao games?

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. Roma - Athletic Martin Ingvarsson SWE
It means a very experienced Elite referee (expected).

      Delete
    2. Athletic - Roma still unknown and maybe in this case they will even wait for first leg, making appointment in less than a week before.

      Delete
    3. @Chefren: it is possible that the Com waits for the outcome, scoreline and potential controversies in the 1st leg before making a final decision. Another option is that the referee they’ve considered also works this week.
Example is Turpin, he had two games in the play-off round. The observer in the return of his Cypriot derby was released after Turpin handled his 1st game.

The referees of the return games in Inter-Feyenoord and Lille-Dortmund have not been appointed either.
The same applies to Olympiakos-Bodø and Rangers-Fenerhahce.

It could either be waiting for the 1st leg, it could be a double appointment imo.

      Delete
  6. Next week:
Vincic and Marciniak in Liverpool-PSG and Atleti-Real respectively. I assume the Polish in Madrid.

In Barcelona-Benfica, the observer is Björn Kuipers. Peljto? Or Schärer?

Letexier will get a game, no doubt about that. No PSG, no Aston Villa/Brugge (next opponent PSG), no Arsenal (French observer). Leverkusen-Bayern?

Kovács will have a game, as usual.
Schärer and Nyberg? Neutral options, however the Swedish was a bit unlucky with two OFRs.

Perhaps a Dutch referee. I would predict Gözübüyük in that case.

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. With just one Italian referee appointed so far (and 2 Spanish crews), we shouldn’t be surprised to see Massa again next week in his 9th CL game 😉

      Delete
    2. I think, there are 6 more expected names: Kovacs, Letexier, Marciniak, Nyberg, Vincic, Makkelie
And 7 candidates for the remaining 2: Siebert, Schärer, Mariani, Bastien, Peljto, Stieler, Taylor

Of course, some of the top names could get a rest or EL, then there would be more spaces for the second group.

Gözübüyük seems unlikely to me directly in a R16 2nd leg after only 2 CL games this season. Even for Schärer, I have doubts, whether his season so far allows such an appointment.

      Delete
    3. Maybe like that:
      Barcelona - Benfica: Letexier (Delajod)
      Inter - Feyenoord: Nyberg (Hernandez)
      Leverkusen - Bayern: Vincic (Borosak)
      Liverpool - Paris: Kovacs (Higler)
      Lille - Dortmund: Makkelie (Dieperink)
      Villa - Brugge: Siebert (Dingert)
      Atletico - Real: Marciniak (Kwiatkowski)
      Arsenal - PSV: Peljto (Dankert)

  7. The referees for the world cup of clubs this summer....

Are you thinking that will be also the biggest candidates for WC2026?

because some coaches are playing with not the biggest names, they already said this in the press....

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. I think referees with enough experience (Olympics, WC) will be chosen. I feel that it will be the list for WC2026 except for some referees who are still fighting for their position.

To "experiment" with other referees Collina has the U-20 in Chile and the U-17 in Qatar at the end of the year.

With referees with enough experience I mean Faghani, Ghorbal, Claus, Tello, Elfath, Ramos, Marciniak, Oliver, Turpin... to name a few

      Delete
    2. I forgot to add, that there are many interesting duels of referees from the same country for 2026

      - Turpin-Letexier
      - Gil Manzano-Sánchez Martínez
      -Taylor-Oliver
      -Massa-Guida-Mariani
      -Zwayer-Siebert

      And in other confederations:
      -Al Hoish-Al-Turais (Saudi Arabia)
      -Omar-Marouf (Egypt)
      -Maza-Garay (Chile)
      -Valenzuela-Herrera (Venezuela)
      -Claus-Sampaio-Abatti (Brazil)
      -Falcón-Herrera-Tello (Argentina)
      -Matonte-Tejera (Uruguay)
      -Ospina-Rojas (Colombia)
      -Ramos-Ortiz-Garcia (Mexico)
      -Elfath-Penso-Dickerson (USA)
      -López-Escobar (Guatemala)
      -Calderón-Herrera (Costa Rica)

      Delete
    3. From a probabilistic point of view, Herrera has the best chance of qualifying for the 2026 World Cup: either as Alexis from Venezuela, Dario from Argentina or Keylor from Costa Rica. 🧐

      Delete
    4. Since it is the 1st edition of the Club World Cup, I expect that FIFA committee doesn't take any risk and will appoint the best names they have, testing new potential candidates in the FFA U20 and FIFA U17 WC. The tournaments cannot fail, while must be a success, any potential mistake will not forgive. Said that we have countries with two more than reliable names like as French, Germany, England, Argentina, Brasil. Probably in this case the oldest will go to CWC in 2025 and the youngest to WC in 2026: Turpin this year, Letexier next year.....

      Delete
    5. Turpin will not be missing in 2026... Today, I am 100% that Turpin and Letexier will go to WC2026 (as in Qatar, where we had 2 English)

  8. The Dutch FA published the appointments for this weekend fixtures and we can already say something about Dutch appointments next week. Past appointments showed us there are only referees appointed as AVAR if there is a international appoint the week after.

Friday: Nac Breda - Sparta: Serdar Gozubuyuk (VAR: Ruperti, AVAR: Oostrom). Most probably Europa League for him.

Saturday: PSV - Heerenveen: Danny Makkelie (VAR: Dieperink, AVAR: Blank). I expect Europa League tbh due to the appointment of Blank).

Sunday: Willem II - Utrecht: Allard Lindhout (VAR: Manschot, AVAR: Martens). Conference League appointment I would say

  11. What do we think of eskas first half performance?

    ReplyDelete
  12. You can argue that the contact is iniated by the attacker not the defender

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. agree with you. And look at the position on field on Eskas, the most credible position for a judgement and somehow still called for the review

      Delete
  13. Very harsh decision a soft penalty. Dingert a man of the little details pfffff

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. Justified penalty, clear contact. Good intervention by VAR Dingert

      Delete
    2. I think a penalty should be supported when whistled on the field, but since the attacker places himself in front of the defender not a clear mistake by Eskas to play on, who had a good view. Wrong intervention imo.

      Delete
  14. Now great penalty no call and correct YC to GK.

    ReplyDelete
  15. Most Dutch people are angry about the penalty decision given after VAR intervention at Feyenoord-Internationale.
'A typical VAR-penalty that the referees would never give on the field.'

But there is little concrete explanation as to why it is't a penalty.
Is the contact really too soft? Unfortunately, to me it looked like a strong enough impact. It's difficult. I understand what people are saying.

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. Simple, the contact is caused by the attacker who puts his leg in the walking path of the defender, who has no chance.
These penalties should be deemed plainly wrong Imho.

      Delete
    2. The key point is that the attacking player is not in control of the ball but just puts his leg in front of defending player while running shoulder-to-shoulder with him (even being in slightly worse position). We have different cultures but surely in the Netherlands (also England, Germany, France, Scandinavia(!)) the football understanding says no penalty should be given here. In other countries maybe they don't go deep into incidents and just see the final result and it's a kick. However, I'm quite sure that UEFA won't like this penalty.

      Delete
    3. Thanks for the explanation.
I am aware that I am more tolerant than others when attackers try to cover the ball with their feet.

  16. The OFR:
    https://streamin.me/v/c833214e

    ReplyDelete
  17. Thanks, surprised that a German VAR called this one, for me never clear and obvious mistake because, as you explained, attacker put leg there, and then clearly a contact had to happen, but what are the defender responsibilities? It would be easy to win a penalty in this way, rather, very easy. I agree that Rosetti will not be content, it's easy to assess, if they don't want easy penalty, this is even a "created" one.

    ReplyDelete
  18. I think that you mentioned the most important point that makes this penalty at least dangerous: If an attacker puts his leg in the "regular" path of the defender, gets hit and goes down, then he has the possibility to "create" a foul. So play on would have been the better decision.

    ReplyDelete
  19. Brave decision by Massa in my eyes, referees of other countries would've whistled it and then it might've even been PK+RC

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. For me it's a clear DOGSO, but I think there is offside just before. Otherwise, we would have had a VAR intervention.

  20. In my opinion, clear and easy red card missed by Massa.

  21. Potential DOGSO in PSGLIV

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. Well, watching the video, I think we can all agree that a live whistle would have been fully accepted and a rather expected call, maybe more difficult to explain a play on, given the action by defender.
In case of offside before, I think they should have called Massa and signal the offside, to make people understand that it would have been red card.
BTW Massa keeps always his style, never a big decision without hesitation, always with a "Vincic approach"....

      Delete
    2. Obvious foul. Player has the ball and gets charged on the back. It’s terrible that this is not called on the highest level.

      Delete
    3. Come on Chefren…OBVIOUS foul and RC missed and completely ridiculous no OFR here. Main referee has to decide !

      Delete
  22. Perfect example where referee should communicate with crowd "player was in offside position so this comes before any potential in game RC, play on"

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. I think that in case of offside they should have called Massa to OFR indeed and then signaling the offside, to make people understand it would have been RC for DOGSO.

      Delete
    2. Agree. It didn't look offside though.

      Delete
    3. I think there is offside, but do someone have the image of the offside ?

      Delete
  23. Zwayer with potential attacking foul just before the very well spotted DOGSO outside of the penalty area in 22'.
And another potential RC in 45'. First he whistled only foul then after probably some information from his team he decided for YC.

  24. He is clearly in onside position by LIV #66 at kick point. Huge VAR error for second night running. Well done Rosetti

    ReplyDelete
  25. UEFA site gives detailed reasons for all the "very easy" VAR interventions (mostly offside, explaining in particular the player in offside and his involvement in the action), but when it's about to know more, like in this case, we can only read "NO RED CARD CONFIRMED".
    Oh, thanks. :)

  26. OFR for Oliver. Not a mutual holding?

    Replies
    1. No. Kane is trying to get out of a defender's hug.

  27. Correct 2YC by Oliver in PSGLIV, on another day could have been borderline straight red

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. Should have been a straight red card is how I would describe it. The Leverkusen player even looked at the feet of his opponent and opened his studs while having no chance of playing the ball.
It’s not Oliver’s finest moments in refereeing, after last week’ baffling miss with the Millwall goalkeeper who almost beheaded his opponent and today’s overlooked penalty.

      Delete
    2. Sorry, ScotRef, you are wrong. This is a straight RC and nothing else.
Deliberate action by the Lev player.
All in all, a poor performance by Oliver, who left frustrated players on either side. Even FCB players, who took away an easy win in this game, more often than once shook their heads about this ref.

      Delete
    3. I find strange that Oliver had a so challenging game in the end in Munich, given the style of both teams, it's particular they made this one by far more difficult than the first leg of Madrid derby.
Having said that, here the best replay to understand whether deliberate action or not about the second YC he issued:
      https://streambug.org/cv/787c6d
I think you can have very strong arguments about a deliberation action indeed, as somebody of you states, but hard to say 100%. VAR supported I think because one could still consider the movement of the leg as veeeeery late attempt to reach ball, but... yes, straight red card would have suited. And we must also say it wasn't easy to assess the deliberate action from the field. One could say a good luck that it was second YC, so player was sent off. But in case, VAR should have always intervened to change it in sraight red, if with different ideas...

      Delete
    4. And the OFR:
      https://streambug.org/cv/17daae
Agree with you it was correct call by VAR, very evident action on Kane who tries to keep opponent away but he is impeded.

      Delete
    5. @scotref, sorry but Oliver wasn't in Paris, he was in Munchen. so, he can't had PSG vs Liverpool, how you said, because he is from England. He had the german tie.

      Delete
  28. Massa made the scoreline in Paris. I hope for him it won’t be the end of his season, because we know how influent PSG can be when they’re angry, but… TBH, this is a crystal clear RC and the match is not the same if Massa takes his responsibilities at 25’.

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. Agree with you but if someone have the image of the potential offside from Barcola that will be helpful to know why VAR didn't ask Massa for OFR

      Delete
  29. Solid performance from Eskas. Average performances from Oliver and Zwayer, also Massa. So I think that we have two candidates less for Ucl Final, it means Oliver and Zwayer.

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. I have seen Oliver as the main candidate for the final in Bilbao since the beginning of the season, more taking into account that Vassaras observed him in the PSG-Brest (relatively easy game), let's remember that Vassaras observed Soares Dias in an Arsenal-Lens last season the same in the elimination round and he ended up officiating the Conference final. In addition, Oliver's games have not been so "risky", I only think that the Barcelona-Atalanta but it also ends up being a game without controversy.

For the Conference it is more difficult, but I would say that Massa and Zwayer are candidates.

  30. PSG's behaviour towards referees has to STOP. Now. The pool of "available" referees is already limited. Apparently PSG is allowed to project their displeasure and anger on the referee during half-time. Or after the match. UEFA, where is your backbone? You shall treat every club the same.

Čeferin should act as an independent and honest president. Comments like “it would be a disaster if Italy will miss the EURO" (before an important play-off), or emphasising in interviews that he watched PSG-City from the stands next to his "friends" are simply unacceptable.

Referees already have a very difficult task at hand without these circumstances and the UEFA president’s disgraceful behaviour. Protect the referee to guarantee a fair game!

    ReplyDelete
  31. What I observed in these R16 games is that all referees were very lenient. So, I suppose that - after quite strict card policy last 1,5 season - refs were instructed to become overly lenient again. Perhaps a preparation to FIFA CWC and WC has just started. VARs with too many questionable (no)calls, anyway.

    ReplyDelete
  32. Having watched, I think fine performance by Eskas, borderline penalty hard to know if it's correct to whistle it and the contact ( if it's enough) is difficult to spot live.

On the other hand, Massa's performance was not terrible if not that BIG mistake on the red card that should have been awarded. I hope for his sake and the VAR that there was offside before.

    ReplyDelete
  33. Here the RC in Zwayer game, I don't see any potential foul before, if you mean the player jumping with opponent... definitely a very good call by German.

    1. And the incident in 45':
      https://www.streambug.io/cv/b05952
Benfica player stepped on opponent's leg, but in my opinion in this case the first thing you have to consider is the challenge by Barça player, it's absolutely impossible to expect something like that, contact was unavoidable, so never red card for me. Delayed YC maybe after some consultation for Zwayer, but to me very correct decision.

      Delete
    2. Not as easy RC decision as to where the incident happened (inside or outside PA). However, if I see correctly, referee turned his head towards the AR, possibly in order to confirm the place of incident. If the AR verbally confirmed it was out of PA, that it was an example of perfect team work.

      Delete
    3. Agree with YC for the incident in 45'm never a RC, there is definite lack of intensity, attempt not to step on the opponent...

      Delete
    4. Shearer, Felix did look to Dietz on the RC (his ar). Another exemple it's the YC to Martinez, he throws something on the pitch (Felix was looking to his left) then I think dietz told him that he threw something.

  34. Eskas had a perfect view on this incident and he made correct assessment. Attacker looking for penalty, trying to use the contact with defender.

  35. Overall, I’d say not a very satisfying set of R16 1st leh for the referees involved.
Pinhero, Turpin and Eskas were at an expected level, but the others had some controversial decisions which were not solved correctly. I hope the return legs will give Committee more satisfaction.

  36. I just saw the footage of angry PSG officials chasing Massa. Interesting to watch. We all know the influence PSG and their president have with UEFA. If Massa wasn't Italian it would look bad for him

    1. Unacceptable to shout at a referee like that. And ridiculous to blame the loss on Massa's decision anyway, if you look at how many chances PSG created.

UEFA must protect its referees. For the image of football and a fair (!) game. If referees are not protected against such anger, they (UEFA) create a risk that referees will whistle all 50/50 cases in PSG advantage.

I’m concerned that the referee in the return will be under heavy pressure.

    2. Furthermore, there is an handball from Nunez just before Elliott goal. Unacceptable VAR on this match. A Shame.
