Question to our fellow Belgian readers: Do most top-level officials come from the Flemish part of Belgium?
ReplyDeleteAnd are there ever mixed (Flemish/Walloon) teams?
I could probably ask the same question to Swiss readers.
In Switzerland, there are referees from the german speaking, the French speaking and the Italian speaking part in the highest league. And yes, they are often mixed, since most of the Swiss people speak and understand a second national language besides their mother tongue at least a little bit.
DeleteMost top-level officials are from the Flemish part of Belgium. And to answer your second question, yes there are mixed teams with Flemish/Walloon refs.
DeleteRomain Devillers is French speaking, DHondt, Claes and Put are Dutch speaking. But off course every official on that level speaks both languages well enough.
DeleteKolarić with a good appointment, given the rest of names. If he does well, he probably would have reasons to hope for a good season in UEFA competitions.
ReplyDeleteUCL 3rd Round appointments:
ReplyDeleteMalmö - Copenhagen: Pinheiro / Sánchez Martínez
Dynamo Kyiv - Pafos: Schärer / Massa
Shkendija - Qarabag: Kruzliak / Makkelie
Rangers - Viktoria Plzeň: Turpin / Marciniak
Kairat - Slovan Bratislava: Gozubuyuk / Bastien
Salzburg - Brugge: Jovanović / Peljto
Ludogorets - Ferencváros: Eskas / Hernández Hernández
Lech Poznan - Crvena Zvezda: Stieler / Letexier
Nice - Benfica: Oliver / Guida
Feyenoord - Fenerbahçe: Nyberg / Kovács
Jovanovic is back, hopefully he will recover
DeleteDo you think Jovanovic could be a replacement for Meler?
Deletelooks like that, but with a new season, isn't regular for elite referee to start with UCL 3R?
DeleteClear upgrade compared to the same stage last season, where several First Group referees where used and nearly no top Elite.
DeleteRangers vs Plzen is also being considred an important match ( Turpin and Marciniak) .
ReplyDeleteWell, there were lot of heat in matches between Rangers and Czech teams, since match between Rangers and Slavia Prague in 2020/21 Europa league Ro16, where Slavia player was acused and banned for racism against Rangers player Glen Kamara, without clear evidence. After that match Kamra said something like, Czech people are all racists, or something similar. This caused bit of diplomatic scandal, when Czech Minister of foreign affairs, calls British ambasador... Few years later when Rangers played against Slavia's biggest rival Sparta, player was booed and whistled for whole match, and get standing ovation when sendt off, that was again twisted like racism to him, by player and team/club officials. IMO that is why appointment like this.
DeleteOk hopefully this time everything goes well!

Like in Men's U20 tournament, FVS to be used instead of VAR and no support officials called.
Game Braga and Levski is disaster. Three missed penalties by Lothar D’Hondt and the more strange... two missed 100% interventions by VAR.
ReplyDelete12' - Handball by Braga player, clear hand out of the body.
45' - CLear holding by Levski player in a set piece - two arms ,
49 ' - Clear Foul by Levski player close to AR 2 - easy, From the back camere seems prety much inside the pen. area.
Not convincing at all.
Do you have links for the situations ?
DeleteThere is PK situation for 12'

interesting cases in LEG-FCB. Very tight first offside (maybe it was even onside - no clear replay from Polish broadcaster was given) and therefore, first goal cancelled. second goal cancelled after OFR for offside and finally - OFR in 87' and penalty given for FCB. highlights/replays very welcome
ReplyDeletefirst offside (1:02): https://youtu.be/4VedlLzG9Bw?si=BcWYjf8t1kUBya4r&t=62
Deletepotential missed PK for LEG (2:43): https://youtu.be/4VedlLzG9Bw?si=an3XghLx0LaA81dE&t=163
second offside (4:22) https://youtu.be/4VedlLzG9Bw?si=O8mkNPz7Uy1ksnej&t=262 - there wasn't an OFR, but goal decision overruled by VAR
and the most controversial - penalty for FCB (06:29) https://youtu.be/4VedlLzG9Bw?si=ufX3OeL-ukhd5pdg&t=389
The 2-nd and 3-rd situation - nothing to add (geo restriction). The 1-st situation - correct decision of AR1. The 4-th situation - clear correct decision (far from controversial) and there wasn't any OFR. If there is a VAR then it's no reason not to believe him. Please be more objective next time.
Delete>The 2-nd and 3-rd situation - nothing to add (geo restriction)
Deleteall this situations are coming from one video - so it's a bit strange, that you could saw the other two.
>The 4-th situation - clear correct decision (far from controversial) (...)
for the controversy part, I forgot to add two important things: first, it wasn't really my opinion on this - it just generated a lot of clout and I think that it really is not as clear as typical PK decisions, so I posted it here.
second one, maybe more important: Simović first decision was PK (and it wasn't really delayed) and LEG players didn't really argue with that. but VAR seems to disagree - if the protocol was followed, it means that there was a clear and obvious mistake in VAR referees' view. so the OFR was conducted and the original decision was upheld. if it was that clear as you paint it, then why we got an VAR intervention (and even OFR?). and I think that if there had been no decision on OFR, PK would be scored - the pressure was rising really fast and the whole process was needlessly delayed.
and we don't see often situations where we have OFR and the original decision is not overruled - so I think that it was worth mentioning.
>and there wasn't any OFR
I opened the video I linked and at 7:06 there is an evidence that OFR was taken after making the PK call.
>If there is a VAR then it's no reason not to believe him.
about a year ago (Nations League match) polish VAR refs made a catastrophical mistake, you can read about it here: https://www.thesun.co.uk/sport/31822515/isak-goal-offside-var-error-sweden-azerbaijan-nations-league/
>Please be more objective next time.
in my opinions I try to be as objective as possible - I didn't really feel that I imposed any subjective view here, but if you feel differently - I'm sorry. using this blog to know opinions from much better refs than I am, to learn
I found other source on YT but the 2-nd and 3-rd situation weren't featured there. And TBH, I don't understand all that confusion about awarded PK. Summary I saw didn't show any OFR. But I believe you it was. Only reason I can imagine was subjective evaluation of offside position of another attacking player. But I think the offence itself was clear and it was nonsense to cancel PK decision for passive offside position. So for me clear and important mistake of VAR and correct decision of referee.
DeleteI was aware of that mistake. I'd like to take back my words questioning your objectivity.
