  1. English VAR for a match involving a Scottish side

  2. Copa América final: the Chilean referee doesn't see anything due to sun, very poor by the organization, she had to move the monitor.
About the incident, should have been clear RC for violent conduct for me, YC is not enough.

    1. Clear RC. Nothing to add.

    2. Clear RC VC in the area by Col16. Potentially a second RC missed incident by a Bra player in the middle of the park in the attacking phase afterwards (another use of headbutting as an attack). Unsure if this was missed due to the focus on the penalty area incident review and therefore lost

  3. Johan Cruijff Schaal (Dutch Super Cup)
    PSV - Go Ahead Eagles

The appointment of Joey Kooij has paid off in a positive way. KNVB is of course looking forward to his development this season. He was calm throughout the 90 minutes, there were no controversial moments, no crazy whistles, and pretty much everything was agreeable.

Despite the whistle blowing at ceremony, Van Meenen and co will no doubt be pleased with him. It's a prima start to the season for Dutch referees.

    1. Glad to hear that. IMO one of the reasons for his appointment for the Supercup is a form of compensation for not being selected for the Euro U21.

I think the Netherlands have a bright future in him, Nagtegaal and Van der Eijk. The last one had a good U21 with the support of his compatriot from the referee committee which he certainly justified.Kooij after the Super Cup has a very nice introduction to the season ahead of us, and it will be interesting to see what the status of Nagtegaal will be as well, who in my opinion is the best referee of the mentioned three and can become the most complete referee. Ironically, it seems that he hasto the least support (for now)

It would be very nice if the readers from Netherlands would share with us their impressions and their opinions on this topic...

    2. I’ve been tracking their progress for a while, and I agree that Dutch refereeing has a bright future with Kooij, Nagtegaal and Van der Eijk. After a middling generation (Higler, Lindhout), this trio could push each other to new heights. Hopefully, all three will be given equal opportunities.

Kooij officiates with impressive maturity for his age. He seems less athletic and agile compared to Nagtegaal and Van der Eijk. But given his maturity and strong presence, I expect Joey Kooij to be a good fit for derbies or games with difficult teams in the near future.

Van der Eijk fits the Rosetti profile — representative, humble, great athlete. The background-minded approach served him well at the U21s. That said, I wonder what the next step is after officiating the U21 final. He’s now assigned to the 3rd qualifying round of the Conference League - for comparison, he had a 3rd round Europa League qualifier one year ago.

Agree that Nagtegaal is potentially the most complete referee. The full package: athletic, elegant, very confident with strong discipline. Stylistically, he feels more like a ‘Collina type’ — but it does seem that UEFA has placed less focus on him so far. Nagtegaal’s recent matches — in the first and second qualifying rounds — haven’t exactly been challenging. One can only hope there’s a solid plan with him and good mentoring in place.

Prediction: all three will surpass Lindhout within a year (if they haven’t already).

@ Anass: no need to mention Kooij getting booed — every referee does during ceremonies…

      Delete
    3. Just to clarify: by calling Nagtegaal a ‘Collina type’, I mean the kind of referee the bald Italian is probably drawn to, whereas Rosetti, I suspect, is more likely to favour Van der Eijk.

      But don’t count Kooij out either… :)

  4. Somebody was wasking about that, Meler has been appointed in Conference League, a second leg game. I think that's due to the failed domestic tests, otherwise at least Europa League for an Elite referee at this stage of the competition. Still a very particular situation for the Turkish.

    1. Following another comment, about the fact that there are some referees without their regular assistant referees we see in all their games, it's because in these preliminary rounds, only main referees are assigned by UEFA, the rest of the team is decided by domestic federations, unless very particular situations. Then from CL Play off, this has been always the turning point for the start of new season, all should become "regular" as we know.

      Delete
    2. Chefren, what is your view on the fact that only Elite referees have been appointed for the third qualifying round of the UEFA Champions League? It’s quite a shift compared to last season.

The more I think about it, the more “logical” it actually seems. These matches are extremely important for the clubs involved. The prize money gap between the Champions League and Europa League is massive. In that light, the significance of these fixtures arguably outweighs that of, let’s say, a Matchday 1 game in the group stage.

      Delete
    3. Good point, for sure these games are more important than the early group stage ties because here teams want to qualify. But this was a valid argument also in past seasons, and if we consider it alone, we don't have maybe the full picture.
I also believe that in recent years there have been some subpar performances by certain Category 1 referees in these matches. Of course even by appointing only Elite referees, you can't eliminate the possibility of errors, but you certainly try to raise the level.
I would then personally add another point that I think I have noticed: these summer qualifying round matches, not just in Champions League, but also in the other two competitions (but clear less than CL) seem much more high-profile and followed by the media than in the past. People talk about them. Some of the matches in this round, in fact, could easily be played in the group stage…

      Delete
    4. I heard that one of Meler’s assistants didn’t pass the fitness test, so he’s now looking for new asisstants to join his team.

  6. Do you expect any of the female referees to officiate any of these remaining qualification matches, at least conference league ??

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. It should be like that, because some females are included in the male categories, so they should be appointed like the male referees in the same group.
But as it hasn't happened so far, it is not too likely to see a change in the play-offs. Maybe Frappart in a ECL PO, but probably no others.

Correct decision from VAR room, should have been spotted live.

  8. Extremely soft 2nd YC for Partizan against Hibernian. Weak performance from referee from Malta. Later, Cavanaugh called him for an OFR for PK for Hibernian. I don’t see it as VAR stuff. Moreover ball was far away from the attacker and GK easy collected it (and should colllect it anyway). I am 1000% sure that Cavanaugh would never give that PK in Premier League.

Both yellow cards and the intervention seem clearly correct to me.

    2. Probably Miki is a disgruntled Partizan fan. Clear 2nd yc and also very clear penalty, nothing soft about it its football not wrestling. Farrugia and Kavanagh did their job very well

      Delete
    3. About second YC, I think it's very mandatory if the foul is whistled, definitely no doubts. However, maybe it can be an argument about the real effect of the foul. The defender looks at opponent before and that's a signal he is in trouble and he has to find a solution, but still one could say not a very clear action in terms of foul. In other words, maybe play on wouldn't have been a scandal, but in all circumstances once whistled, it's YC by book.

About the OFR, the foul is very clear, not seen by referee. Can't play on for something like that, but again, there would be an argument, ball going in another direction and surely not an involvement of the fouled player in the game in that moment. We know this is used as criterion, but well, in this case to me what Partizan player does, can't be accepted and I tend to think it was correct call by room due to the very evident unfair action against atacker. Naive defender.

      Delete
    4. But the SCY isn't this scene...the ref was poor, because he is in the near of the penalty area....an this is a soft penalty, most of the top refs would give foul for de defender ;)
