  1. Zwayer's appointment in Genk could mean: a) being kept in the background as a potential Champions League final referee; b) being demoted due to his recent matches with many OFRs (Offending Referees).

    1. Zwayer not able to handle the CL Final. Something wrong in German refereeing system nowadays after Merk,Stark,Brych eras. IMO Zwayer' s personality not enough for a heated match. And i must to add the final will be in Budapest where will be a lot of hungarian. Im sure if german referee will handle the final they wil give a "warm" welcome. (Zwayer,Osmers and Stieler performances in past years with Hungarian National Team and club teams.)

    2. After his group stage, it seems like a very clear choice to me, even easily predicted, it's hard to question it or think about anything else. After the matches he officiated, would you really give the Champions League final to Zwayer? It honestly seems very strange to me that some peoplee are unable to see reality for what it simply is.
I have to admit that in recent times there seems to be a certain meritocracy in the assignments: referees who perform well move forward, while others who don't deliver at the highest level end up paying the price in some way. All of this starting from Euro 2024, a real positive turning point in Letexier's rise, just to make a nem, at the partial expense of Turpin, although the other French then recovered very well afterward.
That's how the committee thinks. And in fact, one could say that already officiating this match for Zwayer, with maybe a chance of going on to the Champions League afterward, even if only for one match, if things go well, is already something very good for him, given the path he followed.
During the league-phase they continued to appoint him to see how he would have done, now, after winter break, time for drawing some conclusions in the middle.

    3. But of course I must disagree with the Hungarian comment by Marko, absolutely no place here for that, if committee wants to appoint Zwayer for CL final, these arguments would be 100% ignored. All referees would be welcomed!

    4. Chefren please let allow to me my opinion in the blog. This is what I feel and what I think, and I wrote about it as my opinion not as fact as you thought. If I dont allow that you should close this kind of blog with comment section . :) ( Btw are you Rosetti ? " these arguments would be 100% ignored" You are talking this as fact while you are not named Roberto, sou you cant to be sure about that) :)

      Delete
    5. Chefren, you're 100% right. Marko, if you, as a Hungarian, have a problem with German referees, that's fine too. But since there's certainly no Hungarian team in the final, there will only be a few Hungarian spectators. Which referee officiates the final depends on their performance, not on whether you like the referee or not.

      Delete
    6. Marko to your knowledge, Felix had Hungary x Turkey in the nations league playoff last year. So being in Hungary is no problem for him :). Should add, more respect to him its welcomed and appreciated.

  2. Rumsas against Panathinaikos !!!!!! Rumsas last July in qualification round against Rangers , had a very very bad performance. He booked with 2 YC Vagianides, now in Sporting Lisboa, he tolerated the Scots' tough play without booking..Rangers was qualified but eliminited in the next round by FC Bruges 1-3 and 0-6, also eliminited in Europa Leaque group phase, 32nd place !!!!!

  3. The assignment in EL for Kavanagh should give us final confirmation that his previous game in Conference League was a replacement for Brooks. We don't see the latter anymore and he is injured again.
Taylor in Serbia, main argument is the one you already discussed on the blog, he doesn't have many options as he can't officiate most of teams from big countries, but at least until WC, he should get something.
Regular assignments for Rumsas and Bastien: the French is definitely more liked by Rosetti than the past. Not a top Elite referee, but surely now he can be expected in more games than the past.
Peljto will starts from Europa League, after the game in CL in Copenhagen. My idea about the Bosnian is that in case of good performance in Stuttgart, he could get a CL appearance.
But maybe only one? His season, after the Conference League final one yar ago, has been a bit below standard, not terrible, but not good indeed, and he had some unlucky incidents in his games.
Having already said about Zwayer, of course one would have expected Italian referees, and here Guida and Mariani in EL.
Maybe this has been done also to counterbalance too many CL assignments during league phase for them?
After first leg scores, the game in Vigo should be considered as more challenging, but having to make an analysis without knowing first legs scores, I would have assessed the tie in Nottingham as more sonorous assignment for a referee (then we know, everything can happen).

  5. https://www.uefa.com/uefachampionsleague/news/029d-1ebd52c0e86d-cc44b76e6bc1-1000--uefa-champions-league-var-technical-explanations/
There is a big misunderstanding regarding the official UEFA Champions League VAR explanation page. Unfortunately, the general public doesn't understand it and believes that this list, although official, represents the correct decisions. In fact, some former Italian referees, overlooking this point, commented by sharing that link and assuming it was an exclusive technical assessment by UEFA.
Instead, these are simply the official explanations nothing more, based on the decisions made by officials. Many people haven't understood this. Obviously, some of VAR interventions can even be wrong, there is no detailed explanation on that by committee.
Rosetti will surely read this, and in my opinion they should change something, as it creates confusion, especially because it would be appropriate to clarify and communicate what the correct decisions actually are.

    1. Yes. They are just a summary of what decision was made. No if it’s actually correct. No real explanation. Not impressed.

  6. Unfortunate for Peljto but he has allowed a Stuttgart player back onto the pitch with a dangerous attack. Poor management for me and he has created a problem for himself. Thankfully it's offside but could have been avoided.

    1. Agreed, totally preventable and not a good look in terms of optics

  8. OFR for Kavanagh in Budapest, missed PK for careless tripping but there was a very tight offside before.

IIRC correctly in LaLiga these kind of situations are not sent to OFR, the referee has to explain it to the captains.

    ReplyDelete
  9. Strange situation in the Ludogorets game. Kavanagh sent to the screen for a potential penalty but Attwell seems to draw the lines to show an offside (before foul) while he is at the screen rather than before he got to the screen. Very long check and offside is given

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. I think usually if an error spotted, the referee gets sent to the screen, and then the APP is checked whilst that happens to save time, as usually there's nothing else. In this case, there was the offside, that was only completed when he got there. Very normal for England, no idea if the same in rest of Uefa (On 'Mic'd up' show with Webb, the clips always show APP being checked only after referee told to go towards the screen)

      Delete
    2. Maybe....just thought whilst watching it that it's something I've never really seen as Kavanagh was just stood there staring at a freezeframe while Attwell was drawing the lines.

  10. DOGSO and RC by Rumsas at the end of first half during ET, I think you can support the call, but rather harsh. Far away from the goal, not sure he would have had an easy run toward the goal.

  11. Very good straight RC given by Rumsas to PAN26 in extra time, DOGSO.

I'm not sure VAR intervention would have been mandatory in case of YC but I must disagree with Chefren here, RC/DOGSO is the optimal decision in this situation.

    3. Lots of contact with high legs for French referee and almost a difficult half to manage. Globally ok IMO.

      Delete
    4. Is it really an indisputable rc? I guess not VAR stuff but there was no force I would have preferred yc

      Delete
    5. Sanchez Martinez incident in Bergamo was a leg in face, but for many people YC, here less dangerous in terms of consequences of opponent, but a RC is accepted. Of course intensity must be mentioned as argument, but still... talking about SFP is very hard, I must admit, even more when about VAR and its nuances, nevertheless I invite you to watch the consequence on Atalanta's player face..

      Delete
    6. Yes Chefren, leg in face.
But maybe it is worth dwelling on a topic: YC vs RC difference = reckless vs willing.
In that incident, no willing but reckless.
Let me say the consequences haven’t to be the main focus whilst the intensity cannot be evaluated in itself but only in relation of subjective attitudine (reckless or willing), IMO.

  13. Bastien might be one of the biggest mysteries of recent refereeing times. I read Chefren’s words about Bastien’s style, indeed, in European competitions he is known as one of the most strict and most card-happy / penalty-happy officials. However this is aaaabsolutely not the case in Ligue 1, quite the contrary. Regarding recent FIFA French officials, he clearly isn’t the same man in Europe and domestically.

That said, this RC is absolutely mandatory IMO, and would never be questioned in France. Clearly above the ankle and endangering opponent’s safety.

  14. great first half by Maria. This game can go to extra time. Fenerbahce missed a lot of chances.

    ReplyDelete
  15. Very soft penalty by Mariani, contact created by attacker, but VAR has to support it.

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. Yep, it lefts a bit of a sour taste cuz I think it's more wrong than correct, but VAR has his hands tied.

      Delete
    2. If the attacker created the contact, why can't VAR intervene? I mean, if in referee courses and training they know that in these plays it is the attacker who takes advantage of the situation

      Delete
  16. Too soft penalty for Fenerbahce for my liking but again probably not VAR stuff...

  17. Correct PK by Zwayer in Genk, careless trip and he was in front of the incident.

    ReplyDelete
  18. We had some disciplinary sanctions - Pinheiro, Kovacs, Bastien - all of them were right. Players safety is the number one priority. Rosetti said it recently. To claim that Kovacs should not have given there a YC but to support Bastien RC is mind blowing to me. Both of them took the correct decison. I would have liked to see a straight RC given by Sanchez also, the physical consequences are clear.

    2. Yes juan. It is a complete lack of understanding.

      Delete
    3. What seems to emerge more and more frequently is that, in the extreme attempt to safeguard the safety of the players or identify an infraction in conflict situations, the VAR is assuming the contours of a moviola (video) on the field capable of grasping small details or details imperceptible to the human eye, losing sight of the genuineness of some clashes and violating the spirit of a game in which contact is the order of the day.
And not distinguishing between contact and foul although this was the first topic any ref has to learn at his beginning.

  22. I tink it's the first time we see a player returning back on the pitch and being directly punished for offside...
    Video:
    https://streambug.org/cv/f2e2b2
But well, apart from that, conducting a new action from this position would have led to big controversy, so good it was offside.
A very poor management, and I'm really sorry to say, one must admit, and maybe more from fourth official who could have been more aware than Peljto about the situation.

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. I do agree, Chefren. Poor management. IMO, the referee is the main responsible about the management of this action. IMO, it’s up to Peljto to disallow the German player entering the FoP while the action/ball is very close to him. If Peljto shows ‘waiting’, 4th official will not release the German player.

  23. Zwayer, once again this game sums up his season so far.
A good decision, but then a missed one as well.

    Penalty:
    https://streambug.org/cv/ad15d7

    RC after OFR:
    https://streambug.org/cv/5f385b

I didn't watch the game, so I think the gestures he made with hands were related to another incident, he was busy in communicating with VAR and then one should also add as argument the fact that ball had been played, so he had to remain with eyes on the couple of players to see exactly the violent conduct. But.. at first he had given YC, based on what?

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. Very unlucky in this case with the focus on what seems to be a signal for a completed check by VAR in the background. The YC could have been for "something, but the player exaggerates a bit". Really unlucky to continue his OFR-streak in this way.

  24. The OFR in Ferencvaros - Ludogorets:
    https://streambug.org/cv/52623f
Did Stuart Attwell spot the offside only while rewatching the action at monitor with Kavanagh already making the OFR? I think so...
Was the possible penalty after that a clear and obvious mistake?

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. In England the error is found, the instruction of 'go to the screen, I'll now check the APP' is said, and that is checked whilst the referee is going to the screen. At this point, the offside is found and checked. It saves time 99% of the time, but in the rare occasion there is something in the build up, it does add a small stage. (I've no idea if all countries/Uefa operate this way or not)

      Delete
  25. Fenerbahçe penalty, rewatched, to me it's a clear and even full simulation.
If yesterday during the game, I could think about a possible support, now I must say that for me it was mistake to confirm this penalty and I will give you my detailed view.
    Video:
    https://streambug.org/cv/58827c
No contact with defender's right leg and attacker's left leg at the beginning of the incident, then attacker is clever (from his point of view) to leave deliberately the left leg on opponent's left leg, and in my opinion it's just him to create this contact.
I think Rosetti should have expected an intervention here.
Live, you could think about a classic situation in which the contact by defender with maybe a leg happens, but replay is clear.
It's noteworthy to observe that this penalty would have been very likely removed in serie A with Rocchi guidelines and the same VAR, in this case Di Bello, had to use a very different approach. But this is a simulation, only contact is created by attacker. One can only say, fortunately not a crucial decision.

    4. I‘m sorry Philipp, I really respect your opinions but are you serious with these predictions? It seems very german biased…

      Delete
    5. I have a question.
The new Elite referees, Jablonski first of all as we mentioned him before, were not used at all in Champions League KO playoffs.
Nevertheless, could we see them directly in the round of 16?
Can we find a connection in this, or is it possible for it to happen?
If I had to answer, I would say I would have more realistically expected them to be there before.
But in the end, perhaps, for now it's all about the German name, I still can't see the others in Champions League KO stage.
In that case, it would be always the same pairing: Jablonski for Bodo match.

      Delete
    6. Turpin already got liverpool galatasaray game in group stage, I highly doubt he will get it again.
The fixtures also depend on the return of Marciniak and whether he will be ready.

      Delete
    7. and honestly if Mariani or any Italian get a big clash ( City Real or Chelsea PSG), I might as well get a chance at refereeing cause that would be ridiculous

      Delete
    8. Yeah really any Italian or German in City-Madrid would be a curious choice indeed

      Delete
    9. @Swiss_reffan: I realized that myself and was expecting such a comment. :)
      Yes, they are serious predictions.
Overall, based on the remaining teams, it's easier to appoint German and Italian referees than English and Spanish ones.
For Real-City, the options of top referees are quite limited. At least Turpin, Letexier and Vincic should not be available due to previous games. So I went with two referees, who probably will be at the WC anyways, but still need to show something this season.
But sure, Kovacs and/or Makkelie would also be possible there.
Siebert is a normal choice, I think, if you don't want to use the same 5-6 referees for every top game.
And Jablonski: If some referees will come into CL, who did only get EL last round, I saw him as one of the first options after Zwayer, Mariani and Taylor based on this season's performances. Maybe the WC candidates Peljto and Schärer are somewhat more likely, but have only done 2 CL games this season.

@Nerazurri: Yes, I missed that fact regarding Turpin. Then I would change him with Nyberg.

      Delete
    10. And yes, if Marciniak returns, he becomes also an option for many games. Although it is not clear, whether he should directly get a top game after an injury break.

      Delete
    11. I can understand your explanations but I'm still bit sceptical. As you know I'm a big fan of the German refereeing but I really don't see them getting such big games.

  36. Some thoughts… Since the English are so limited in the Champions League, I suspect one of them will be compensated with a play-off final.

I also noticed that in the Round of 32, both Turpin and Letexier were kept away from Italian clubs. That makes me think one of the French referees will take of Italy NT in the play-offs for the World Cup.

  42. The elimination of two Italian teams from Champions League still clearly benefits Rosetti.
I hadn't thought about it before, but certainly not wanting to appoint someone like Turpin or Letexier for Juventus second leg and assigning them elsewhere should mean that there is perhaps an attempt to preserve the referees for Italy's matches on WC Playoffs. And that's no small thing.
On the one hand, this brings us back to the usual issue: only three or four officials in total to handle certain matches have the trust by UEFA committee. On the other hand, it is a very strong argument. The anonymous in the post above did very well to highlight that. But of course, having to manage refereeing in this way, always under the fear of making appointments… well, nothing to add.

    1. For 8WC play-off the main matches are ITA-NIR and TUR-ROM. IMO, all considering the choice could be among these names: Letexier/ Turpin/ Mekkelie/ Nyberg + Oliver (for TUR/ROM only). Might it sound good for you?

    2. Yes, I agree. These are the highest risk matches. Especially in Italy, my guess is that a trusted and widely accepted referee will be appointed.

    4. Marciniak would also be an alternative for those biggest play-offs, if he returns soon.

For the intercontinental play-offs, I absolutely expect at least one UEFA referee, rather two - like it was always done. It would make sense to use referees there who are (seem to be) more liked by FIFA than by UEFA - so Makkelie and Taylor maybe.

To show a YC two minutes after the foul is extremely bad management. It seems Jablonski had a total blackout and VAR, for some reason, didn't want to call him to the monitor and instead suggested a YC. Unacceptable, if you ask me.

      Delete
    3. Agree with you ESR. Certainly not a management worthy of a UEFA Elite referee

      Delete
    4. Jablonski didn't even have a reaction. It was the AR that signaled the foul.

      Delete
    5. @totallyrandom, what do you mean? Jablonski commented the Foul in the moment it happened.

To be honest, it's Red, but it's No crystal clear red nether it's an error to not intervene by VAR imo

    https://streambug.org/cv/ecd2fe
Once again, I want to ask.
What is the sense of having VAR if we see very often such wrong decisions always taken on subjective criteria? Here it's easy to understand that VAR said OK because AR and referee assessed it as reckless and there was rather not a full contact, but this should have been clear red card.
I can't imagine the same outcome in a UEFA game.

    1. I agree, but the public opinion in Germany is a different one: Commentators agree with the YC "as the ball was played before", media speak of a dark YC. So, not seen as unacceptable here. But once again, I agree, and the procedure leading to the YC was weak too.

      Delete
    2. We need to stop saying ''he played the ball first'' and what ? If the player is not able to control himself to not injure the opponent it's a clear foul. So now we need to wait for players getting out of the field with a broken leg to say ''oh it's a RC because he's in an ambulance'' come on every journalist or commentator should stop saying this, one of the stupidest comment. Clear RC here, agree with everyone.

    3. Blatant red. Full contact or no shinguards would 100 % break his leg. Yellow if factually wrong.

  48. Yesterday evening I watched the Bundesliga game between Bayern and Dortmund. Normally I don’t watch games on TV, but this match was one of the most exciting German classics in recent years.

The referee was Sven Jablonski, now part of the elite group of referees. I was really impressed by his outstanding performance.

He showed great authority, excellent fitness and a very good understanding of the game. His communication and decisions created a high level of acceptance on the field.

From a media perspective, almost nobody talks about the referee after this match – and that says a lot. In German football, referees often struggle in games like this.

At only 35 years old, this was already his second German classic. I am sure many more will follow.

He confirmed his strong Champions League performances in the Bundesliga and fully deserved this appointment.

Respect and congratulations – great job, Sven Jablonski.

  49. On this refereeing blog, it is clear that a few accounts operate with a specific agenda. They consistently post overly positive content about one particular referee and contribute little else to the discussion.

At the moment, this is most visible with supporters of Pinheiro, Jablonski, and Letexier, who are persistently promoted and defended at all costs by certain profiles. Personal preference in refereeing style is normal and inevitable. However, constant one-sided promotion undermines balanced debate.

If Roberto Rosetti happens to read here, I sincerely hope that such one-sided narratives do not influence objective evaluations or appointments.

    4. @lukas Would you care to explain your issues against Makkelie? I think currently he has as much haters as fanboys here, and you obviously belong to the first category. I guess 9 out of 10 of your posts concern Makkelie and they’re cynical and negative, while you don’t seem to care about the other referees being fanboyed.

    5. There’s absolutely nothing wrong with having a favorite. But accounts that only show up when their favorite is refereeing and stay silent in every other debate, that’s a red flag for me.

  51. I'm sorry that the perception of the blog has declined in quality over recent times. Personally, I can say that I definitely notice differences compared to the past. Nowadays, in most cases, what I observe is that, of course, many people write with their favorite referees in mind. Unfortunately, this is also a human thing that can't be changed. I obviously can't force people to think differently, nor can I oblige what people should write. So, unfortunately, we have to move forward despite this.
However, I believe that technical discussions still occur during important situations in matches, although probably at a lower level than in the past, and I regret that. Often, everything tends to turn more into fan-like debates focusing on individual referees names, but this is something that can't be controlled.
I'll say it again: it would be very foolish by committee to come here and form ideas for assessments and appointments based on what is written, there has never been the slightest influence from anything we have discussed. That said, I think we can take pride in one aspect of the blog: we are able to understand many things about on-field situations, referee assignments, and so on, which, believe me, because I have had confirmations from the proper sources, are even of a higher level than technical discussions that may occur directly between referees, observers, and others.
I don't say this to celebrate the blog, but it is a quiet added value that isn't immediately visible, yet is highly regarded at least in terms of strictly technical discussions. As for everything else, I'm sorry, but, as I said, there is nothing I can do, everyone keeps their own opinions.
I hope that you will always find the blog interesting for some reason in the future, for as long as we can keep it going.

    2. While I agree on the actual observation of specific profiles only showing up when their favorite referee is acting (or the actual opposite), I don’t think this is a ‘new trend’. I remember the same happening when for example Mazic and Cakir were refereeing in the past.
But yes, it is quite annoying and probably it would be best to ignore those comments and only reply to the contentual ones. Because as Chefren says it’s hardly possible to manage this any other way.

Bravo Chefren I after 4 years reading on this blog, this February I decided to start writing comments because it came to my mind that we no longer receive content from experts just mere biased people. 53. Chefren I must say about this Blog no matter how biased some of the comments may be and no matter how much the detail in analysis has declined over the years, you always manage to keep this blog alive
( hopefully you understand my point) which one must say is admirable. It’s time to start cracking down as a whole on biased and useless comments, and preparing our observations, our analysis and our predictions for a World Cup to remember this summer.
As referee lovers we must embrace the exciting names pushing through and the older names that have been around a while and that have delivered and continue to do so. We must continue to enjoy tournaments and different competitions weather it be male or female , we must share our thoughts and like I’ve mentioned before continue with our predictions.

This blog has inspired me and I bet it has done the same for so many others. To finalise I’m sure we can all agree that without referees there is no football. May this blog live on a many a year just like refereeing has done and will continue to do so over the exciting years to come.
