  1. It’ll be interesting to see how TELLO handles the technical area, especially Jesse Marsch. He’s got serious Arteta Behaviours. He’s one of the most carded national team coaches in CONCACAF Very Much emotional and active on the touchline.

  2. On a sidenote I do find the "hostage" style camera shot of the VAR room rather hilarious.

  3. The whistle every throw in is ridiculous.

  4. Very clear SPA and crystal clear YC.

    ReplyDelete
  5. It seems to me that at start Tello waits a bit longer before he starts countdown at throw ins

    ReplyDelete
  6. Very clear YC. You could argue it's not too far away from being SFP

    ReplyDelete
  7. Correct YC for SPA, a RC was asked by Bosnia, but it wasn't DOGSO.

    ReplyDelete
  8. Looked like tello was trying to work out who he booked when recording the booking

    ReplyDelete
  9. Good YC and good start by Argentinian crew.

    ReplyDelete
  10. Clear YC but Tello positioning isn’t so good. He tends to follow players very close and harms some plays

    ReplyDelete
  11. Now also clear YC that was missed maybe on purpose...

These fouls should be YC automatic.

    ReplyDelete
  12. AR initially flagging a foul but a corner actually (and correctly) given

    ReplyDelete
  13. Missed YC in 19', reckless tackle. Should have been booked.

    ReplyDelete
  14. Missed YC at 19’. Warning not sufficient here. Just after, was it a foul indicated by AR1 overulled by Tello prior to 1-0 ?

    ReplyDelete
  15. Tello is having problem with his positioning. He hasn't been able to find his rhythm..."

    ReplyDelete
  16. Clear fk missed then bosnia scored from resulting corner

    1. So an excellent advantage ;)

Not a clear foul in my opinion.

  17. First portion of the half has been a touch chaotic for my liking. Tello just needs to take a breath and be slightly more composed in assessing contact points of challenges and challenges themselves.

  18. Same as in the opening game yesterday. The South Americans seem to love their whistle - a lot of double whistles. Really disturbing

    ReplyDelete
  19. Offtopic : Oliver injuried replaced by Letexier’s crew for Ivory Coast / Ecuador. Not a good new for english referee :( !

  20. 2 yc missed now for kicking ball away

    1. I dont know... I am not a fan of solving those situations with a booking - i think it is supportable, especially at this level, to go with a warning

    2. If you ignore it, it never stops.

  21. I like Tellos dynamic movement across the top of the penalty area

    ReplyDelete
  22. Tello has had a good 1st half ,allowed the game to flow

    ReplyDelete
  23. 3rd time ball was kicked away..Still nothing.

    1. Agree. Lenient (too?) style by Tello.

    2. Typical south american style.

    3. I don't think many referees in this cup would inject themselves with a YC in these situations...we have seen this with FIFA before

      Delete
  24. Deserved yc,but compared to CAN #7 foul in 19th min this was nothing.

  25. 45', finally the referee decided to book, but he was not convinced, quite delayed...

    1. yes - the disciplinary sanctions are not uniform

2 missed and 1 too much

  27. Now 2 very easy cards given.

    1. With his style during whole 1st half.

Little bit weird and strange but ok.

      Delete
    2. Most likely in his mind he finally felt he could show yellow card,s so he did it rather in a very soft way if compared to the previous fouls. Evident mistake the missed one in 20', but when a referee decides to adopt a certain style, keeping cards until a certain moment of the game, this is usually how it ends.

      Delete
  28. Now two YC. Ok for it but where is the balance and harmony with totally different permissive line adopted with Canada ?

    1. the one for demirovic definitely ok and well needed - i did not decide it himself to be honest - quite delayed

the one for lukic was completely wrong

  29. Not the most convincing first half but certainly not bad, inconsistent with his decisions of what is or isn't a YC. Does go through the gears with movement which is a plus and has a decent rapport with players. Personally I've found it a little underwhelming but from an observing point of view no major issues to report.

    ReplyDelete
  30. I didn't like Rapallini's and now really dislike Tello's style. It's more like acting as a referee and making disciplinary more difficult than needed.

    ReplyDelete
  31. Did they give offside there? Or a defensive free kick. Either way the wrong call. Not a penalty either

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. It looked like a offside (missed by AR1?, his position was bad anyway). Not sure what was the decision.

      Delete
    2. I thought the right back had played him on

      Delete
  32. 49': the challenge by keeper can be reckless, because playing ball before in this way can't save the rest, but OK, not enough for VAR...

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. +1 these situations can be difficult to judge, yes GK plays ball fairly first but follow through and punches attacker in head...in the end based off player reaction I guess dropped ball for a collision is expected outcome. Be interested in others thoughts...

      Delete
  33. Higuain vs Neuer copy. And the same decision made by the referee. Never a free kick for the goalkeeper.

    ReplyDelete
  34. I think was offside decision. If confirmed, no blame for AR1 with a very very millimetric offside.

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. But if AR1 didn't detect it, how did they come to the offside decision?
It's not a VAR situation (unless they deemed it a penalty - but then there should be the VAR sign and public announcement).

      Delete
    2. Agree with you Philipp. But confirmed was an offside with the 3D animation just shown now…

      Delete
    3. Another slightly delayed earpiece decision I suspect...also AR wanted to rightly let play continue first

      Delete
  35. It's becoming frustrating at points to watch Tello throw a lazy arm out when signalling for a free kick.

    ReplyDelete
  36. So it was offside. I can only assume the AR thought it was on but then they received the automated signal that it was off?

    ReplyDelete
  37. Now they confirmed it was offside before the possible penalty.

    ReplyDelete

    1. For you Chefren, this was penalty + YC?

      Delete
    2. For me, the follow-through is too excessive to be accepted as a clean challenge on the ball. A penalty and a yellow card for reckless action by the goalkeeper would be the appropriate decision, but the common interpretation is to take the previous touch on the ball into account. It is rare to see a penalty awarded in such situations.
If there had been no offside, however, in my opinion VAR shouldn't have intervened because not a clear and obvious mistake. Nevertheless, a penalty would have been the preferable decision from the on-field officials.

      Delete
    3. Thanks @Chefren. Maybe a clip later for other readers...? This is where a pill/vote system for preferred outcome would be useful

      Delete
  38. Confirmed offside at 49'. But did the AR1 detect it?

    ReplyDelete
  39. 66min if this is not yc I wonder what he need to see to show yc

    ReplyDelete

    1. Mixed criterium and not convincing.

Easy cards for Bosnia in 1st half missed some clear cards and letting players get away with delaying restart and kicking the ball away.

      Delete
  40. Now for the 1st time 5sec rule for throw in was implemented and ball was given to other team.

Imo,not a big fan of this rule,if player is timewasting give him YC and add that wasted time after 90 minutes.

If he does it 2nd time, then give him 2nd YC/RC.

Football is not basketball where we have same rules and there are different aspects in this sport.

But atleast this protects refs and saves them from making huge calls in terms of bookings.

All this to have 2-3 cards on average what would happen if we see 5-10 cards?

    End of the world?

Also, this commercial/cooling break is ridiculous, all because U.S. influence and their TV commercials.

Again, this is not Super Bowl and NFL.

    1. Should have received a yellow for deliberately releasing the ball inside the field of play to prevent Canada from restarting play.

      Delete
    2. Probably, but that is imo past.

We will very rarely see bookings for that in the future.

      Delete
  41. Very challenging and quick match now to be honest

    ReplyDelete
  42. Missed mandatory yc in 73’ for protesting.

    ReplyDelete
  43. Very surprised that David didn't get YC for protesting

    ReplyDelete
  44. Very lazy officiating, I'm not convinced by the referee from Argentina.
One can't find a style, can't identify which kind of performance he wanted to deliver.

    1. This game is not easy to be fair! Speed and ever minute the challenge for referees

      Delete
    2. Ah... Average Europa league match or lower Champions League match (with all the respect)

      Delete
  45. His non verbal signals (signalling no foul, free kicks, corners) are for me really poor. Just sticking his arms out passively and then doing nothing. Not been the most inspiring performance in all honesty

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. Now just compare him to Simpaio, two complete extremes. Something in the middle would be golden mean

      Delete
  46. So if a player who is receiving a medical treatment on field is being substituted there is no 1 minute delay. Don’t know about that

    ReplyDelete
  47. Missed foul canda step on the foot

    ReplyDelete
  48. Substitution in added time, along with a delay with two Bosnia players down at one point, and nothing added to the six minutes

    ReplyDelete
  49. A very very positive performance! I want to see him again in a bigger game.

    ReplyDelete
  50. Well, standard quality performance for Tello. To much lenniency, some missed YC, at the end OK,nobody will speak about him.
Ot: I saw some legitimate opinions about how many times referees use whistle. Look, referees are human beings, not robots, and If somebody select to whsitle as much as possible, its not contrary to rules. And, whistle is main weapon of referee, and he/she must use it.

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. The IFAB LotG are clear though, that a whistle used too frequently will have less impact when needed, and also that the whistle is NOT needed to restart play from a goal kick or throw-in. So I would argue whistling 'as much as possible' is 'contrary to the rules'

      Delete
    2. You must whistle to start the 5 second countdown. That’s what they did yesterday and today. The rest of the whistles were about ball placement etc.

      Delete
    3. VG, No you don't habe to. It's a service

      Delete
  51. No controversial incidents if Tello delivers a good performance in his second game he can reach everything

    ReplyDelete
  52. I have somewhat strange opinion about Tello's refering today. I saw at least inconsistent disciplinary approach (I would rather say he made several mistakes), also some missed fouls and yet despite those mistakes, overall he left positive impression on me.

    ReplyDelete
  53. I think similar to Sampaio's performance this would be a performance that you either enjoyed a lot or found it indifferent. Personally I found it indifferent and overall wasn't wowed by Tello. No major errors to report or analyse but for me there was a lot of inconsistent and small works more generally which left me feeling lacklusture at the performance.

    ReplyDelete
  54. A good performance from Abatti, in my opinion. He handled the key moments of the match with effective composure and intelligence, with an authoritative approach and consistent evaluation criteria, both technically and disciplinary-wise. The penalty disallowance was correct due to the goalkeeper's obvious anticipation. He showed a good athletic performance, although his positioning (not always effective) could still improve. In my opinion, we'll see him in some high-level matches in this WC, definitely.

    ReplyDelete
  55. I thought Tello's performance was good overall. A few missed fouls, a yellow card clearly not given, I found him a bit careless, perhaps disappointed at having been selected for a sleepy game with only running around. I believe he has the potential for more challenging games.

Perhaps this is the reality of this tournament, due to political decisions and financial interests there will be uninteresting matches of non-representative teams like the ones we saw today. With all due respect to the teams involved, but the World Cup starts with the qualifiers and only the elite deserve to be in the World Cup, but soon we will see all 208 FIFA countries participating.

I think the amount of whistles used is strange and will be the norm in this World Cup, since referees will have to whistle to start scoring, substitutions, etc., which didn't happen before. An irritating fact only for the usual complaining aunts! What's important is the referee's good performance, and so far I've seen 3 consistent performances.
