  1. Hello. Who knows who the referee for matches FIFA Club World Cup 2017:

    Al-Jazira - Auckland City
    and
    Pachuca - Wydad Casablanca

    1. The appointments for games at FIFA tournaments are relased 48 hours before the respective date. So, we can expect today or maybe tomorrow in the morning the first choice, for the play off between Al Jazira and Auckland City.
For the quarterfinals on 9 December, we must wait at least for 7 December. This is how it worked in past editions.

  2. So now I think that Oliver, Taylor and Dias will be promoted to Elite Category, replacing Thomson, Tagliavento and Atkinson.
These should be the choices. Rizzoli is still included in Elite Category for the first part of this season, but we know that he already decided to retire. So, in case of confirmation, we will have less Elite referees, at least on paper.
Regarding the appointments for Wednesday, I didn't expect Bastien, and I think that the game in Ukraine is a very good signal for him.
Haţegan a bit far away from the spotlights after WC playoff, while Czech Královec could use this opportunity to recover. I think that this was a clear signal by committee: they want him back again. The hope is that this big game (only on paper, given the standings) could help him in order to recover confidence. A new beginning is possible!

  3. Chefren... In your opinion who is ahead in UEFA - Michael Oliver or Anthony Taylor?? In England Michael Oliver is ahead by quite some margin so is it the same rating in UEFA and FIFA circles??

    1. It is really difficult to answer, if we analyze all CL group stage appointments of both Taylor and Oliver, maybe we could say that they are at moment more or less at the same level. I don't see a referee clearly ahead. We can just underline that Taylor has been followed by committee for a longer time than Oliver. In 2015 he made his CL debut, while Oliver managed that one year later, in 2016.
However, at moment they are in a very similar situation, Oliver has still the young age at this side, he can develop his abilities and skills as Elite referee with the needed time, while Taylor is now "already" 39 years old. We expect both in Elite Category and the next assignments will say more about the preferences by committee.
If I had to make a prediction, I would say committee will try to have Taylor ready for Euro 2020 while Oliver for WC 2022. We need English referees in major tournaments, after Clattenburg and Atkinson's retirements.

    2. Personally I would rate Oliver higher than Taylor... That being personality wise as well as based on decision making... Taylor's wrong KMI rate is pretty high and sometimes his big calls are so baffling that it actually beggars belief... He's good for medium level matches but in high difficulty matches Oliver surely edges past Taylor I think based on at least what I've seen in the Premier League in the past 2–3 seasons!!

    3. I'm not Chefren, but :-)

Of course both Oliver and Taylor are good referees, especially against the background of no English Elite they are on an Elite level, in my opinion.
Taylor is 'just' a very good referee- in my opinion. As Soham said he makes a lot of crucial mistakes (we have VAR soon, so that is less relevant) and is a solid personality on the pitch but not more. He has a quite English style, not so suited to UEFA, like Webb/Clattenburg et al. I think he would burn in a very challenging CL match, tbh, even in the zenith of his career.
Oliver is clearly a talent, maybe pushed slightly too early but he has proved that right, he did deserve the fast-track Elleray gave him through England. Oliver doesn't look like the biggest manager, however his prevention is more subtle, he is popular amongst the players, media, managers etc. He seems to really 'understand' the players on pitch, and presents himself on a level to the players. This, and he has still years to improve. In my opinion, I could see him having a performance like Webb in ATL-BAR: impossible match, close to perfect performance, in some years anyway from the Newcastle referee.
In summary Taylor is a very good referee, but Oliver is a great referee (with Pawson they are both big future). At least in my opinion.

(PL designations confirm my impression of a ranking
Man City - Man Utd OLIVER
      Liverpool - Everton PAWSON
      West Ham - Chelsea TAYLOR)

    4. Insightful analysis as always Mikael :) I hardly ever disagree with you and this time is no exception either :)

    5. For me it's the other way around.

Oliver is PL since 2010. He never had a domestic final apart from the Community Shield. Isn't it weird?

Taylor has all 3. Community shield, League Cup and FA Cup.

On the UEFA level you can't really make a conclusion. But it's a fact that Oliver had a second chance and he is using it now. After a huge mistake as AAR in CL, he was given low profile matches for about a year. He became quite regular on the appointments since last year.

      Delete
    6. Oliver has the record for the most number of yellow cards in a League Cup match (ten), achieved in the 2016 Final, between Manchester City - Liverpool.
Of course Taylor got all three finals before Oliver, however I would suggest age is the primary reason.
      Great point about AAR!

      Delete
    7. Oliver is an absolute shoe-in for the FA Cup Final in 2018 IMO... One mistake as AAR can't end a career of a superb referee... Comfortably the leading referee in England at this moment by a long way!!

    1. Thanks for the confirmation.

      Delete
    2. Wow! I did not expect Tierney, FA did not made signals for that to be honest. Attwell, well done to rejoin after everything that happened, I' not so sure Tierney can become a top UEFA referee, but there is much time.
Thank you and best wishes for both!

      Delete
    3. Surprisingly Tierney is having a better season than Atwell in terms of performances... Latest appointments are also really positive for Tierney... Tierney won't be a Webb maybe but I think he can be a Dean or Marriner!!

      Delete
    4. They both have 5 matches in PL, even East, Mason, Jones, Scott have more- curious. I don't remember a controversy for Tierney (36yrs), Attwell (35yrs) in NEW-CPL and BUR-WHM were 7,9 but I don't think a disaster.
Attwell also has the advantage of Elleray on UEFA's refcom: they go back many years. If I had to make a prediction I would be surprised to see them ascend beyond First Category; good luck to them both!

    5. Scott's appointments have come as a surprise to me this season... He's now picking up Arsenal, Liverpool, Man Utd fairly regularly!!

    1. Thanks. Rohit Saggi from Norway is only 25 years old. 1992 born, very impressive.
Very likely, Kosovo got a second spot, I don't think that the referee who joined only one year ago, has been already replaced.
Faroe Islands: Petur Reinert retired (at least from FIFA)?
Petri Viljanen from Finland (1987) is a former footballer (at high level), he played Under 21 EURO Championship in 2009.

  8. Interesting situation in 42:50. There was a conflict between two players, immediately fourth official Ricci joined the pitch to separate them. After that, Diedhiou gave a warning to both.
I think at WC fourth officials will be more active during the game, this can be an istruction by Collina.

  10. 85': phantom foul whistled by Diedhiou, it was not clear what he had whistled, a promising attack by Auckland City was denied... so far I must say the Senegalese has not fully convinced me.

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. 89': VAR silent check for a potentiallly crucial incident (possible penalty to Auckland City), correct decision to play on.

      Delete
    2. In case of a not fully convincing performance, it would mean Grisha has greater chances of flying to Russia 🤔 The third CAF place battle is between Grisha and Diedhiou IMO

      Delete
    3. Agreed with Chefren, quite big problems in positioning, solid personality on the pitch (good for CAF), not that clear line in fouls but okay.
Maybe they give him another match in UAE, but I am not sure that's a sure way to gain a WC ticket.

      Delete
    4. @Mikael Can you make a comparative study of Diedhiou and Grisha? :)

      Delete
    5. It really would be nice to have correspondance from a big follower of CAF, CONCACAF, AFC etc. but in their absence I can try.

Malang Diedhiou was really impressive at AFCON 2017, was good in all of his three matches including a Semifinal. I quite like him, he is one of the best match readers in CAF, he smiles a lot (like Gassama), solid/good personality (one of the best in CAF) like we saw today in UAE, following Diatta I can say that he has filled the gap of his compatriot. For CAF also he seems quite proactive and a good prevention manager, I miss that facet of refereeing a lot at AFCON to be honest.
Ghead Grisha is more interesting as a case IMO. After Ray evaluated his performance in the AFCON 2017 opener as 8,1 he didn't get to referee any other match in Gabon. Egypt getting to the Final didn't help him, to be honest I don't think this was a plan by CAF he was just unlucky. At Rio 2016 he got a Quarterfinal, and it was reported a fine performance. I think he is even quite similar to Diedhiou (very tall!), but like most North African referees one can replace empathy a bit with distance and generally lesser soft skills. He is a bit more distant than the Senegalese, but a bit firmer.
In my opinion, BOTH deserve a ticket to WC, ahead of Sikazwe who in three games at AFCON always showed okayish performances, but not really potential for more. In case of a challenging match, the Zambian would really struggle IMO, whereas Grisha and Diedhiou could cope fairly well.
Gassama on his day a clear no1, but he seems to have lost his form a bit.

      Delete
    6. Agreed. I would really like to see Diedhiou as a main referee at WC 2018. Gassama and Sikazwe had many below par performances last times...

  11. Penalty for Liverpool after 3 minutes. Marciniak could be backed IMO, but not the clearest call. Now a very bad foul by Emre Can, Marciniak booked him. Orange card... Challenging start for the polish!

    5. No, sorry. I judged it as normal foul and didn't make a clip. Now the chance has gone. Maybe after the game.

    9. After I watched all re-plays I have to say it was a very poor performance of Marciniak. I like him very much but this is not what I expect from him.

At least 2 big mistakes for me: red card for Emre Can and 2nd yellow for Dzhikiya (handball). Also, Tasci was not even booked for that (very dangerous)arm contact with Coutinho (10:26).

      Delete
    10. petschovschi - such posts are the reason why this blog will always be a failure in assessing referee performances.

You know nothing about the LOTG and based on that you call something a very poor performance.

A red card to Emre Can would have been 7.9 to the polish referee. The handball 2nd yellow might have been supported, but actually on a RAP DVD it would say now card. There is no promising attack going on.

  17. Minute 36' in Feyenoord - Napoli: possible penalty to Napoli. In case, AAR2 responsible, I think. It must be checked...

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. In real time it didn't look so much, but NAP player hits the ball and then is tripped, it is small but it is enough IMO. Crucial mistake? Maybe not enough.
In the case Oliver did whistle, it would have made a very challenging atmosphere at Rotterdam, and anyway it is quite intensive.
I saw a good Oliver so far, remaining quite distant to be honest, I guess his subtle rapport he has in England is harder in UEFA, but still with a quite high level of acceptance, good stepped approach in a fairly rough match and a good YC for a direct reckless tackle.
So far enough for Elite, IMO.

      Delete
    2. As Chefren said, totally the jurisdiction of AAR2 Moss, so maybe one can call it a smart call by Oliver ;-)

      Delete
    3. The atmosphere at De Kuip is intense... Seems a really good decision by the committee to test Oliver in this game :)

      Delete
    4. Quieter second half as one would expect.
On the second penalty appeal for Oliver/Tierney- they (correctly) saw a foul on the defender, Oliver played an advantage. Okay, NAP need to score, but on a perception level considering that was a crucial decision I would prefer him to whistle the freekick. Just a small observation :-)
Otherwise good by Oliver, IF this was a final exam (I suspect a tentative decision has already been made by UEFA refcom before kickoff), Oliver will be an Elite referee for 2018 IMO.

      Delete
    5. A lot quieter ;-)
Good use of cards in the last minutes, correct 2YC->RC but I wonder whether it could have been a direct RC:SFP.

    1. Yet another crucial mistake?? :(

    2. Seems to have hit the armpit rather than the hand... How should that be evaluated??

      Delete
    3. Really borderline. I think one should back the referee. Unnatural arm position and possible contact.

      Delete
    4. Clear mistake and Eriksson had maybe the best possible angle, and besides that he made wrong decision. Do you remember EL final Liverpool-Sevilla officiated by the same man? Of course you do. He denied 3 or 4 penalty appeals for handball in favor of liverpool. At least two of them were clear and Eriksson decided the EL winner with those clear mistakes. And now the same ref gives such a penalty (it is doubtful should it be a PK even if the ball hit the arm - in terms of refereeing in that final never in a million years).

    5. 50-50 call. Referee can be backed.

      Delete
    6. Maybe the call is 50-50, but 100% the ball didn't touch the arm, but the body. :-) So...

      Delete
    7. I thought it was a clear mistake, reading some comments, but indeed it is a quite difficult situation in which we can't be sure about the touch by arm. Problem is that it is impossible to understand, so in this case referee can be backed. Maybe a mistake, but easy to be explained.

      Delete
    8. Maybe he can be backed, but also Eriksson could not have been sure, so he should not have awarded the penalty, I think.

      Delete
    9. I think the final angle shows that the ball touched part of the arm. I support the call. The defender took a risk in the penalty area, made himself bigger, and gained an advantage from his action. This is a handball decision that I expect to be called.

  21. Another penalty appeal rejected by Oliver and Tierney at 65'... Needs to be rewatched

  22. Now another situation in front of AAR2 Paul Tierney.

  23. Kassai with a good performance so far, but he doesn't use his spray when required, and I think he is quite strict and over-using his whistle. He seems a bit restless to me.

    Still, good performance.

  24. 82' correct 2nd YC by Kassai to Leipzig. Blatant holding, SPA. No protests.
83' Another correct YC, to BES.

  25. 81' very clear PK missed by Marciniak, I have no explanation except the score of 5-0...
    Maybe it was also DOGSO.

    2. That's a disappointing news :(

    3. That would have been an easy good mark for Marciniak in this match. The match was decided very early, only the first few minutes were challenging. If the observer asseses the foul of Can as SFP, which I would fully understand and support, and then the missed penalty I think we have a 7.4 because of two crucial mistakes. The penalty given wasn't that clear, the Austrian expert Thomas Steiner called it a mistake, but I think Marciniak could be backed here. The rest was on expected level.

      Delete
    4. Are this kind of mistakes (the winner of the match was decided long time ago, it was 5-0) observer evaluates as crucial mistake (therefore automatically mark goes down to 7,9)? Speaking about result, nothing is crucial there.

      Delete
    5. The last situation at around 81' was a penalty + DOGSO probably?? It seems Marciniak has lost a bit of form recently... Not a very polished performance in Real Madrid v Tottenham and now some mistakes here... The Polish is not at his absolute best like he was the last season!!

      Delete
    6. There is no way the Can tackle is missed SFP and a crucial mistake. Yes, there is SOME high contact, but there is no tangible force involved, the tackle got almost all ball, and there was never really every endangerment to the safety of the opponent. Not every high tackle is SFP!

      Delete
    7. Nowadays such tackles are punished with only yellow cards. High force but nothing more. Bent legs, no full studs contact (only the tip of the shoe and by accident). So, the yellow card was the optimal choice.

      Delete
    8. I also think that it wasn't a mistake to give YC, I wrote that Marciniak will get problems if the observer asseses it as a SFP. For the Austrian expert Thomas Steiner this was a stonewall RC for he called it brutal attack. I don't like his opinions and excessive words at all, I think his analysis could be a bit more objective and not like "searching mistakes".

  26. Oliver FEY-NAP
You can read the many comments above, the tackle for the 2YC->RC was actually a brutal tackle, even a crucial mistake tbh in not being a direct RC, I think only AR1 Burt could have had the perception of the hitting point (?), although the referee could have seen that the FEY player had little/ no control over his body. I tend more towards penalty, the call of AAR2 Tierney though, at 38'. Oliver showed to be a complete, and Elite, referee tonight, in my opinion.

Quick words on Bastien in SHA-MNC, it wasn't his best evening, he presented himself as even naive whistling quite a few clear no fouls, it seemed players had this perception and fell for some freekicks. A doubtful penalty at 91'. He had to YC a player for running to him dissenting after a foul was awarded for a nothing; not the best impression. He was a lot better in Crvena Zvezda - Arsenal, honestly, maybe he is promoted in the summer, he would even deserve it, but you wouldn't have had that idea watching him in Donetsk tonight.

    ReplyDelete
  27. Please Mikael. I see all the match. Clearly disagree with your words. Gundogan was booked because of dissent. It was his second time of exagerrated complaint with gestures and Words. So very good caution here. Penalty is quite soft but there is a foule here. Dont see your « non fouls » décisions either. But i think it’s a cultural difference between us. Agree with excessive falling of some Ukrainian players but just to obtain cards, not for phantom fouls as you pretend. ;)

    1. I was watching two games at once, so maybe you can excuse me some errant impressions :-D. No comments on him so I just wanted to give some idea of his night.
I just didn't think it was the best evening of a (very) promising referee, but he didn't show any worrying/intrinsic problems, apart from maybe acceptance (I didn't mean the card was wrong for dissent, but common sense suggests you don't book a player for 'rightfully' complaining. Of course LOTG would say otherwise, but just my opinion, maybe it was needed in the match to be fair).
Crvena Zvezda - Arsenal is a much better evaluation of his talent.

On MD6 no referee wore the red kit.
    Overall I counted
    37 yellow
    35 blue
16 black (Bastien, Collum and Oliver twice)
    8 red (nobody twice)

    4. Sometimes they choose for a black kit with socks from another color. I saw it in MD5&6 at the Feyenoord game.

      Delete
    5. Marciniak in MD1 Feyenoord v Man City... Red socks with the black kit!!

      Delete
    6. UEFA dictates that the referee's socks cannot match the color of one of the teams. So it's not really a "choice," to use a different color sock--it's a requirement.

You all remember, one year ago, on December, there weren't changes as well. It is possible that now it is the same. Maybe committee has decided to update the categories only once a year, on June.
The meeting on December can be only for adding the new FIFA referees in the respective categories. However, let's wait for more info.

    4. Are there any information about which referees is leaving the list? Another one is why does England just got two new fifa referees when Atkinsson and Marrined is stepping down and Clattenburg has not been replaced yet

  33. I watched now Marciniak's situations in Liverpool - Spartak Moscow and my opinion are the following:
    1) Penalty is a supportable call, I wouldn't have whistled it, but referee can be backed.
    2) Tackle by Can very close to RC, but YC is still supportable, we can analyze the intensity of the tackle which was not so high. However, RC wouldn't have been wrong.
    3) Second YC to Dzhikiya could have been issued, but at the same time I'm not sure about the control of the ball by Salah, let's say YC was the best choice there, but not still a 100% mandatory one.
    4) Penalty missed when score was 6-0, however I have a feeling that Marciniak didn't have the exact perception of the incident.

So, all in all, for me neither a so good performance, but at the same time nor a very poor one.
There were some situations in which the Polish could have taken better decisions, however the ones he took were not always clear mistakes.

      Delete
    2. Just as remark, England would stay without referees in Category 1 at moment, however given that in the second part of the season there is only KO stage of both Champions and Europa League, this wouldn't be a real problem. Surely in June at least Pawson will be promoted.
The main target for refeees promoted in Category 1 is to get matches in group stages of both CL and EL, so very likely this is a reason for which in this update there weren't too many promotions in Category 1, if not the mandatory ones (Ekberg replacing Johannesson).
But then on next June surely committee will fix these things, including Gil Manzano replacing Fernández Borbalán in Elite Category... that's my view.

      Delete
    6. Impossible to answer, we should know the reason for which he didn't get games in this group stage. Very likely he failed some tests, the only reason, but we can't be sure.
Let's see whether for KO stage he will be back again, but in that case I think he wont get top clashes in CL.
