  1. My final predictions: Cakir in Manchester, Mateu in Rome.
A news from Turkey, it seems as Barış Şimşek has retired from the pitch, starting a new career. He attended the course in Malaga, it will be interesting to see whether he will be appointed or not as VAR / AVAR.

  2. Well... I guess I was right about Orsato :). Bit of a surprise about Makkalie in Rome. Im assuming we will see Lahoz for Spurs Dortmund and who knows for Ajax Real. Maybe a Marciniak or Hategan?

    ReplyDelete
  3. So, Orsato and Makkelie will start KO stage with VAR.
Not a coincidence, if you ask me, that for the first two games we have referees from nations in which VAR has developed by a long time. Clear choice by UEFA.

  4. Van Boekel has made a terrible mess after ignoring VAR Makkelie twice during Utrecht - PSV (two penalty situations, does anyone have videos?). Dutch media are very critical as well. Could this affect Tuesday when Makkelie and Van Boekel have to cooperate again?

    1. No, I don't think so. Van Boekel is an experienced and respected VAR.

    2. Great behind the TV monitor, yet terrible on the pitch? Fantastic!

Here are both situations. It turns out Makkelie didn't ask for an OFR in the first situation.

    4. Independent from the final decision, I think the VAR process was fully correct here.
      1) Referee has seen the holding, therefore the VAR comes to the conclusion that an OFR would probably not change the referee's decision (mistake is not clear and obvious enough)
      2) Referee has seen the contact, but the VAR considers it a clear and obvious mistake and thinks, the referee probably would change it after watching the video. Therefore he recommends the OFR. The referee accepts the OFR, but is then free to build his opinion, while watching the pictures.

    5. Yes, VAR gets mostly defended by fans and media, it's Van Boekel who is facing huge criticism, also by the KNVB, who have openly revealed they think it should have been a penalty in both situations.

      Delete
    6. I agree, VAR Makkelie did everything correct and the final decision is for referee Van Boekel. And he decided differently, this is his right. But seeing the videos it would have been better to follow Makkelie.

      Can happen this.

  5. In addition to the sonorous fact that Orsato will officiate the first Uefa CL match with the usage of VAR, Manchester United Vs. Paris S. Germain is a very very big match. Great trust and recognition for him.

  6. Situation in Spanish 3rd Division (Levante B - Badalona)

Looks like an own-goal scored directly from a free-kick, but referee concedes it (and no player complains, revealing that they just don't know LOTG) IMO commiting a clear technical mistake.

The thing is, match report "gives" the own-goal to Levante GK, instead of Levante's left back #3.

Do you think that GK touches the ball? IMO, he doesn't, so it's a crucial mistake from the referee, but here we have 2 options:

    a) Referee appreciates (wrongly) that the GK touched the ball.

    b) Referee crew didn't realize on time about the technical mistake and tries to kind of "camouflage" it on the match report as an appreciation mistake.

    1. In my opinion there isn't any touch by keeper, who is late in his attempt of playing the ball. Sorry to say, but it sounds like a technical mistake and maybe officials noticed that too late...

      Delete
    2. Well, that is far worse than just the technical mistake. Purposely making a false report on the official match report should be a reason for demotion, if not something more. Of course, who can prove they lied and not that they actually saw that touch they reported…

    3. What they said on their mouthpiece between the referee and his assistant if there was one in use there

  7. Predictions for next week:

    O. Lyonnais - Barcelona
    Felix Brych (GER)

    Liverpool - Bayern München
    Gianluca Rocchi (ITA)

    Atletico Madrid - Juventus
    Björn Kuipers (NED)

    Schalke 04 - Manchester City
    Carlos del Cerro (ESP)

    1. Mine are
      Lyon-Barca Soares Dias
      Liverpool Munich Mazic
      Atleti Juve Zwayer
      Schalke City Bastien

I think first leg appointments will focus heavily on countries with VAR in their respective leagues as those refs will have the most experience. I think some of the big name refs like Brych Cakir and Kuipers will future in the second legs.

    2. My predictions
      Lyon - Barcelona: Collum (SCO)
Liverpool - Bayern München: Rocchi (ITA)
Atletico Madrid - Juventus: Zwayer (GER)
Schalke 04 - Manchester City: Soares Dias (POR)

  8. Edit- did not notice Mazic was refeering EL this week. Will go for Kuipers in Liverpool Munich instead.

  10. What is your opinion related to the risk of early year games? Since an example Skomina who is maybe top favorite for CL final has no league games in Slovenia since end of November. Is not tricky to put him so early in game?

    ReplyDelete
  11. I really hope to see bookings on these games for players making the TV signal. In Saudi Arabia "trials" they didn't even in very strong dissents.

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. The updated rules says that you need to over use the tv signal to be booked

      Delete
  12. First minute and first mistake by AR, the ball was on the line but he signal'd for out?

    1. You should specify which game... I guess Manchester?

      Delete
    2. Ye. sorry. Manchester ones.

      Delete
    3. Not necessarily a mistake. Flag was delayed as it was a (relatively) close call, to allow for a VAR check. When it was clear that no goal would result, AR immediately raised his flag.

      Delete
  13. Silent check in Rome for a possible deliberate handball. I think that van Boekel detected that it was outside the box, so no VAR stuff in any case.

    ReplyDelete
  14. Orsato is facing a very challenging game that looks as if it won't end 11 vs 11...

    ReplyDelete
  15. I wouldn't describe the first half as really 'dirty' yet Orsato has given 5 yellow cards and missed one to MU no.21 for reckless arm to the head according to UEFA guidelines. Could possibly have been a second yellow card to PSG no.3 and a small shove by MU no.18 caused a little tension. I think the Italian may struggle to end this game without a red card or second yellow.

    ReplyDelete
  16. It's still shocking how little the public seems to be educated about the use of VAR and when it can be applied... Looking on Twitter, many people wanted VAR to intervene on Young's tackle...

    ReplyDelete
  17. What a decision by Orsato. It looked like he gave second YC to A. Young not Pogba. Not the best way to show YC like this.
    Also correct RC for Pogba.

    ReplyDelete
  18. I think that Orsato was informed about the second YC to be issued, at first he didn't want to show it. Maybe it was was for the gesture made against the referee, who had missed it...

    ReplyDelete

    1. Possibly dissent, Pogba's studs were high as well though.

      Delete
    2. A mandatory caution for a reckless tackle in my opinion by Pogba. Poor tackle that catches Alves with studs, very high up on the leg (thigh). Osarto definitely took his time but 100% correct decision imo

      Delete
  19. Fair challenge ... no yellow card but italian official always wanted to get highlight ... Rossetti stop electing your fellow italian

    ReplyDelete

    1. Not only YC, but a straight RC wouldn't have been wrong either.

  20. Without further elaboration, I think impressive performance by Orsato. Very alert and focused and no hesitation when he needed to take action. Great control, well done!

    1. Well done for issue number of yelloe card or for wat? Wasnt him the master of VAR? What his doing on field.

      Delete
    2. He had nothing to do with VAR today and in a challenging game he chose the right way to keep the control. All the cards were justified. Pogba was correctly sent off as well...

      Delete
    3. I dont agree... Then kimpembe still on the pitch thats call bias refreeing. You should have constent performance during the night not occassionally.

      Delete
  21. Solid performance by Makkelie in a match that wasn't very challenging. He tried to let the game flow, especially in the first half, where I wasn't always completely convinced by his foul detection. Very good in the second half, maybe a bit stricter handling of the Brahimi injury/substituton would have been possible, but that's details.

  22. Where can I bet that the first VAR in a UCL match will happen in Mateu Lahoz's game?

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. According to UEFA first VAR in UCL has OFICIALLY already happened right after goal for Porto which made me confused as its way off of what we are all learnt about VAR because in fact it was only "of field/silent" check that confirmed of initial decision taken by referee on the pitch was correct.

      Delete
    2. I'd say 1st "effective" VAR intervention (decision changing procedure, e.g correcting a wrong offside or an OFR) will happen indeed in Mateu Lahoz's game.

      Delete
    3. I just hope that VAR wont intervene at all for changing a decision in all CL KO games :D
Maybe I'm asking for too much, but in case it would be a very huge success for all the involved referees! ;)

      Delete
  23. First CL day, no VAR interventions. That's the first very important thing. I just hope it can be the same tomorrow.
Makkelie expected level in Rome, for sure Orsato in Manchester had a more challenging game, with many fouls.

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. As mentioned before according to UEFA we have already had a first use of VAR in UCL in Rome-Porto :O

      Delete
    2. For VAR intervention I always mean a "changing decision", when it just confirms a decision, it is a silent check and not a real intervention.

      Delete
    3. Yep I fully agree with you but for UEFA that confirmation of no offside & goal was correct was a real intervention which doesnt make any sense and this doesn't help to understand VAR by normal football fans.

  25. Very good game of Makkelie in Rome. Also his assistants were great!

  26. I thought Orsato was not very good tonight. His cards were very inconsistent. Too strict and gave cards too quickly in the first half and let too much go in the second half to the point where he was not calling fouls on purpose just so he didnt have to give players second yellow cards. Orsato is usually a good ref but below the expected level for me tonight.

  27. Alexandru Deaconu is the new head of Kazakh referees.

He worked with kazakh referees in Antalya (6-9.02), but only as a UEFA instructor. Head of referee committee is something else. He is actually the no. 2 in romanian committee, after Vassaras, I can't imagine he will leave (anyway, everything is possible, but only for a lot money).
