  1. And the ball is rolling at Soldier Field in Chicago.

Who else on the blog is watching?

  2. Bad tackle by Altidore, shoud have been booked .

  3. 10th minute
Heavy, reckless and late tackle which was slightly from behind by USA attacker. Good opportunity for Escobar to show an early card much like Frappart this morning.
But in typical Escobar and 2019 Gold Cup style. Only a verbal warning and "calm down hand gestures".

  4. Too much leniency is never good.

  5. 22 minutes in and the game is getting chippy.
Escobar is complacent, trying to talk his way out of everything. And of course over using what I detest the most. The calm down, calm down hand gestures.

  6. How many times is he going to ignore CLEAR cases of players shooting the ball at least 20 meters away way after the whistle? I have counted 5 times in the 1st half. Whistle, then they shoot the ball away to prevent a quick free kick for the opponent.

    1. He hasn't even bothered to talk to those players to put a stop to it.

    2. The guy’s doing a good job. Letting the players decide the outcome....

    3. If the players are to decide the game. Why is he needed?

    4. @Unknown if a player decides to commit an act of Violent Conduct, he's very much done his part in helping decide the game. The man disadvantage would be entirely his fault. A referee who ignores an incident like this is the one who is not letting the players decide the game by their actions.

  7. The first 45 mins are in the books.
Mario Escobar showing why he was surprisingly chosen by the CONCACAF Ref Comm for this Final.

He's been permissive, overly lenient, has shown no cards and has allowed the players to do as they wish.

  8. Tonight showed why Uefa has best referees.

    1. Sadly we've got better than Escobar in CONCACAF. But as I've said multiple times before. His style checks all the boxes for the Ref Comm.

  9. 47th minute and we have the first mass confrontation of the 2nd half. Guardado (MEX) in direct sight of the referee aggressively grabs a USA player by the throat. Escobar decides to use yet more words and "calm downs" but nothing more.

    1. Prior to that, MEX 15 struck USA 17 in the face with his hand, definitely nothing "negligible" about the force used. By rule that has to be an automatic red card, but this referee (like far too many others) seems to not care very much about what the rules say because of "muh Game Management."

If "let them play, keep it fast, physical, and keep the cards in the pockets at all costs" was the game plan, then he's doing just about as good of a job as a referee could possibly do under those restrictive instructions. But the rules are the rules, in my opinion the referee needs to enforce them first and foremost.

    2. P.L. Collina talk till no end about the Laws being written and about how the referee's must enforce them. And how the Laws are the same in all four corners of the world. But then we come across this type of officiating. So who are we supposed to believe? Who are we supposed to emulate?

    3. I hate seeing this sort of "game management" theory trickling down into grassroots football. Don't get me wrong - game management in terms of body language, communication, verbal warnings, etc. is important. But game management should not dictate what the call is in the first place, that is backwards thinking.

Let me give an example. I was refereeing a game a few months ago and one team was clearly more frustrated than the other, because they had been called for more fouls as they had been the dirtier team. At half time, an experienced referee I was working with asked me "can you try to find a 'game management foul' in favor of the frustrated team in order to calm them down?" To me, this sounds like he just wants me to make a "make up call;" to give one team a different line for a foul than the other team gets. That's unfair and unethical, in my opinion. The calls have to come first, and then whatever happens as a result of that you can try to manage. But if one team wants to get frustrated and pick up stupid cards because they can't stand getting called out for their shit, it's not my job to accommodate them.

    4. I'm happy to see that you showed "backbone" and didn't waver in your approach. Sadly a FIFA Referee (Qin Liang) at the Women's World Cup allowed herself to be bullied by a whiny team into disregarding the LOTG.

  10. This referee is far too lenient for my liking. 15 Black just struck 17 Red in the face with his hand, that's supposed to be an automatic red card. I can only hope he simply didn't see it, but I suspect he did see it and chose to not show any card because "who needs the rules when you have GaMe MaNaGeMeNt?"

    1. He definitely saw it. Why do you think he pulled those two players aside for a pointless chat.

    2. I watch soccer to see a fair game not one sided game. I have watched and played soccer for 42 years. I was taught by a German goalkeeper and they taught me to cheer for the good plays on either side - not bad plays allowed by refs.

  11. Beyond Escobar's style. I can't stand his ARROGANT posture, demeanor and attitude towards the players.

    1. I actually disagree with you here. If a referee is going to try to get through a game like this with minimal cards, he is doing a good job managing the emotions through things like his body language and attitude. He's shown confidence and firmness in every way except by actually enforcing misconduct (which yes, is a big deal. I'm just saying I think his body language has been good).

    2. When he's been wrong and chosen the macho tough guy look to justify his shortcomings. It makes him look ridiculous.

  12. Only reason I can imagine is he wants 90 minutes to go with 0 cards.

    1. That's lovely if the match allows it. This match certainly hasn't been one for no cards.

    2. insane to justify no cards because ref wanted it...

  13. I don't care what the ref wants, jumping on someone's back and putting hands on a players neck in front of the ref and no call! Appears like a payoff to the ref as I see no other reason for his reffing.

    ReplyDelete
  14. If ref wants to justify the level of attitude and arrogance, then he should make sure he is doing his job and controlling the game. With Mex player grabbing US player by the throat happening right in front of him and no card, it's clear this ref is garbage.

  15. Looked like SPA to me in the ~84th minute, unsurprisingly no card tonight...

  16. Mexico substitution. The player doesn't take the shortest route off the pitch. As per the new IFAB directive. Instead, he is escorted by the referee chit chatting all the way to the 4th official.

  17. 90 +2 Yet more verbal and demonstrative dissent that the referee is blind and deaf to.

  18. Today 7/7/2019, two male FIFA referee's were made to look amateur by a female FIFA referee.

    Bravo Ms. Frappart.

  19. To Escobar's credit, the second half didn't devolve into a mess like I would have expected it to, given the lack of discipline. He did as well as any referee can do to control a US - Mexico game without using cards.

Still, I philosophically disagree with this approach. Players deserved the cards, it is the referee's job to give them. Even if he controls the game, his job is to make the right calls, which includes giving cards where appropriate. If all you care about is match control, he did a fine job... but it is important not to forget that actually enforcing the Laws of the Game correctly is the referee's primary job.

  20. His performance will be satisfiying in all the media and in general public ,but I have to say that I was embarassed by what I saw from Escobar tonight.
Imo,worse than Tobar (just my opinion).
Disciplinary control was 0,quite literraly as he didnt show single card in a match that had several confrontations, several pretty nasty fouls, time wasting and so much complaining directly to him.
Not everything can be card of course, but everything verbal warnings?Come on.
    3 minutes of added time...
So much timewasting, and he shows 3 minutes...I was speechless.

There were other incidents as well like SPA in 84th min.,Altidore foul in 11th min.,confrontation to start 2nd half snd otgers.Just werbal warnings and that's all.
He was very lucky that game didnt got even dirtier, but I dont that luck will follow him if he continues to manage games like this.

  21. It is pointless to give out "fair play" awards at tournaments. Pointless because it seems that it's been decided and accepted that applying the LOTG has become optional. Just as pointless is ranking teams based on "disciplinary points". Especially when you've got referee's like Mr. Escobar who blatantly refuses to use cards.

  23. Anybody who has time to make a compilation of all the ignored yellow cards from the game?

    For example:

    The reckless challenges
    Mass confrontation
    Other confrontations between players
Delaying the restart by shooting the ball away after every whistle
    Dissent by words and gestures

  24. I take Tobar any day over this one. Total refusal to use cards for whatever happens, paired with an arrogant player management. I can't have respect for such refereeing. Missing VC right in front of you...

If this poisonous Busaccaism is what the ref coms around the world like to see, we all are better off of not watching.

  25. When I found Dr. Aire I was in desperate need of bringing my ex lover back. He left me for another woman. It happened so fast and I had no say in the situation at all. He just dumped me after 4 years with no explanation. I contact Dr.Aire through his website and He told me me what i need to do before he can help me and i did what he told me to, after i provided what he wanted, he cast a love spell to help us get back together. Shortly after he did his spell, my boyfriend started texting me again and felt horrible for what he just put me through. He said that I was the most important person in his life and he knows that now. We moved in together and he was more open to me than before and then he started spending more time with me than before. Ever since Dr. Aire helped me, my partner is very stable, faithful and closer to me than before. I highly recommends Dr. Aire to anyone in need of help.
