  1. I cannot believe that I see Zwayer here after his unacceptable performance in CL MD6 and earlier unconvincing performances.
He may be a good referee, but he definitely does not deserve to be appointed after the mistakes he made.

    1. What happened? I never saw that performance.

    2. Discussed here:

    3. Unacceptable is harsh, if not wrong.
He made mistakes, but he stayed in full control and I still find the missed y/r card not stonewall yellow.

  2. Replies
    1. It`s only 1st leg of Europa league!
Next week we will see 4 matches of UCL and 2nd leg of Europa league
May be Damir Skomina will be there

    2. Skomina is now in Dubai because maybe vacation

  3. Replies
    1. We have only Artur Dias as Portuguese referee to be appointed in KO stage, I guess he will appear in EL on next week (return games), his last Champions League performance (Real Madrid - PSG) has been not so good.

  4. Andy Madley and Dave Coote not appointed because they failed fitness tests for new FIFA referee, before any assignment, they must do that again.

  5. Debut in a game with VAR for Mažeika in Wolfsburg - Malmoe.

    1. And Paweł Gil on Tuesday VAR with Marciniak in CL, and on Thursday with Mažeika in EL. Good time for him.

  6. Daniel Siebert acting the first time as VAR in UEFA competitions.
Also first time that with Bibiana Steinhaus a woman is appointed as AVAR.

  7. Interested situation with Gil: On Tuesday he is in Var in big match Atletico-Liverpool and on Thursday he is as var with debiut referee with Var, nice

  8. AEL Lárissa - PAOK Thessaloníki
    Srđan Jovanović (Anastásios Papapétrou)

    33’ Penalty (handling) to AEL?
    57’ Penalty (handling) to AEL?
    66’ Penalty (handling) to PAOK?

VAR Interventions: 33’ No foul -> Unchanged (OFR)

Overall: lenient in foul detection and disciplinary control; missed cards: 18’ (standing leg), 72’ (aerial studs tackle); good stepped approach with verbal warning for careless late foul at 24’ – then stupid to inflame the game by not opening the cards with very late borderline careless/reckless foul at 31’, game was back under control after first caution at 33’ and the long OFR break; distant authority, aroused respect; generally great game feeling, that is crucial to his style, even if he lost the overview (31') briefly; great fitness, running -> higher-end ‘satisfactory’ performance.

    1. Mikael I was in the arena and I saw Sdran officiating in person. IMO he had the game under control full time. I agree with play on on 57' and 66' but imo the 33' minute hand must be penalized. Sure it is a very difficult situation with many bodies in a small area but his hand is way off his body which makes powerless every other criteria.

  9. Surprised to see Anthony Taylor appointed, after the numerous mistakes he made in Premier League lately - including last night in Chelsea - Man Utd.

    1. He made mistakes in his last two European matches as well but it doesn't seem to matter. UEFA seem to really like him at the moment. Even though personally I think Michael Oliver is better.

  10. Are there debutants in the ko phase?

    1. Thank you! Looking forward to their performances

  11. Where are Peljto and Jovanović?

    1. Peljto was not called to Winter Course so he will not officiate games in KO stage. Jovanovic maybe is appointed for a return game in EL on 27/02.

  12. OT

Tobias Stieler (UEFA, 1st) will handle the Greek SL derby between PAOK and Olympiakos (23/02, 18:30 CET). His Assistants will be Matthias Jollenbeck and Christian Gittelmann. FO will be Sören Storks. VAR will be Tobias Welz.

    1. Any news from Cyprus league?

    2. Thanks Edward. Great appointment for Stieler.

Sandro Schärer will handle the AEL Lemesoú - AEK Lárnakas 2L (0-0) in the Quarterfinal of the Cypriot Cup today at 1800CET. First leg was refereed by his compatriot Alain Bieri.

  13. Serie A appointments: Orsato has a game on Friday (tomorrow) and this quite surely means that he has Champions League on next week. Two options: Chelsea - Bayern on Tuesday and Real - City on Wednesday.

    1. Same situation for Turpin with an appointement on Friday in second division with his ARs.

    2. Predictions:
      Real-City - Turpin
      Chelsea-Bayern - Orsato
      Lyon-Juventus - Brych
Napoli - Barcelona - Maybe Taylor? In gropu stage he had big matches.

Kuipers, Makkelie and Skomina should be a referee for 2nd leg.

    3. I think skomina will be in charge of the
      Real - city game

    4. I don't think that Taylor will be appointed on next week, too close after today's appointment.
Maybe Brych in Napoli - Barcelona.

    5. anthony taylor doesnt have a game in england this weekend, therefore likley to have a champions league game.
every champions league game he has done, he didnt have a premier league game the weekend before,

      taylor likley to be used.
His var tonight has a big game on sunday in arsenal v everton which is vital for the race for champions league!!

  15. Bundesliga
    Saturday 15:30

    Borussia Mönchengladbach - TSG Hoffenheim

    Dr. Felix Brych (SR)
    Christian Leicher (AR1)
    Stefan Lupp (AR2)
    Michael Bacher (4th)
    Bastian Dankert (VAR)
    Markus Häcker (AVAR)

This appointment is typical: I think we will see Brych with Dankert as VAR in Champions League next week.

  16. According to DFB Referee Newspaper by Fröhlich : Announced for UEFA Euro 2020 Referee comes in the spring.

    1. Can you name the source or the link please?

    2. Source :

      Answer (yellow) :

But is only German and not English :)

    3. Thank you very much!
      I can understand German,so no problem :)

  17. Aytekin has before his match because technial problem with VAR Communication.

  18. Nightmare start for Kulbakou in Bruges. Missed penalty in 3' for actually a very reckless tackle from MUN goalkeeper, and also missing intervention from Guida. I can't find any arguments against an intervention other than the time in the game, to be honest. Overall foul detection has been below expected as well from Kulbakou and his team.

    1. +1 on the potential penalty. Studs up from the keeper, however not much protesting from the players.

  19. Match stopped in Getafe due to Ajax fans throwing objects to the field of play and impacting a Getafe player.

    1. Sorry but the behaviour by Getafe player is scandalous!
I condemn what happened, but he was ridiculous as well.

  20. Besides one potential missed caution (standing leg tackle) at 27'(ish), good 1H by Carlos del Cerro Grande in the Ludogorets - Inter game.

As always, I can only admire his brilliant, elegant style :)

  21. OT
Svein Oddvar Moen referee Egypt Super Cup Ahly and Zamalek today. Assistants Kim Thomas Haglund and Magnus Lundberg. 4th official Tore Hansen. VAR Goran Gabrilo. AVAR Miro Grgic both last Croatia.

    1. Svein Moen has left Saudi Arabia, Norwegian FA doesn't want him to be there.

  22. Great YC for simulation by Palabiyik.

  23. Interesting situation with the fourth goal scored by Eintracht: deliberate play before a very clear offside, so goal allowed.

    1. I don't really agree with that one being allowed to stand, and IMHO the penalty to Salzburg was incorrect too. Otherwise good performance by Palabiyik.

  24. VAR in action in Cluj - Sevilla, Aytekin stopped the play.
    Possible penalty for deliberate handball.

    1. A veyr clear one - blatant miss by Aytekin.

    2. Indeed, correct penalty after review but it was very clear, should have been spotted live...

    3. Can't watch the game, but it sounds correct: If the VAR wants the referee to rewatch an incident, the play should be stopped. I remember an incident in a CL (?) match in which a goal had to be changed into a penalty for the opponent. Marciniak was involved, if I remember well.

  25. Now in Kharkiv a goal has been annulled for offside and VAR has also spotted a foul so penalty.

  26. A couple of interesting penalty appeals (handling; charging) in the last minutes but I think correct to play on by del Cerro Grande (Martínez Munuera) in both cases.

  27. Another review for handball.

PK + YC after OFR by Karasev in Copenhagen.

    1. Not sure why the YC was given, it didn't seem like SPA...

  28. Buquet totally lost control of the match and is just walking in the area of the ball without understanding what is happening. In the first half no good feeling on all the theatre by the players of getafe. In the 2nd half things heated up with 3 YC's within 2 minutes. A ajax player imitating the theatre of the getafe player etc.

when you expected the ref to whistle for the small fouls so that everybody could calm down he continued to do nothing with that. So the waiting is for a explosion of the emotions and maybe a RC of 2.

    1. 2nd leg of this match definetly needs a very experienced referee. Buquet has shown that he is not ready for matches like this.

    2. I agree, I was really surprised to find out that the referee for this game was not an elite referee. Buquet was indeed not ready

  29. Correct handball and penalty by Cerro Grande

  30. Excellent simulation decision (85') and then correct penalty (handling) + YC (SPA) for Inter given by del Cerro Grande, the latter after intervention by Martínez Munuera.

The television graphics communicating the OFR didn't exist, though.

    1. Another very good performance in UEFA competition by Carlos del Cerro Grande!

Could the Spaniard handle one of the UEFA club finals this year?

    2. Of course not, if there is a final available for a Spanish referee it will be Lahoz

    3. I think Mateu Lahoz comes before.

  31. AZ - LASK: Gestranius had whistled a penalty, but VAR corrected the decision in free kick. It was OUTSIDE the box.

    1. is there a RC missed than for DOGSO?

    2. I'm OK with SPA, definitely missed a card.

    3. Impossible for the referee to decide inside / outside in this situation, he needs help from the assistant. SPA for me as well not a dogso (control of the ball, direction and so on)

  32. within the 1st min Gestranius with a penalty. After VAR review the foul was outside the box. RC missed for DOGSO after penalty was hanged to free kick?

    1. I didn't watch the full action, so I don't know.

  33. Poor PK decision by Gestranius in Alkmaar.

Intervention by Hernández Hernández was a bit late for my taste, but correct (that's what matters)

  34. First thing to underline, after four quite calm games in Champions League we have definitely many VAR interventions this evening in Europa League. For sure games are more challenging, but the difference between both competitions is evident so far.

  35. Penalty situation in Sporting CF - Istanbul Basaksehir (ref. Anthony Taylor)

Replay are not 100% clear, but surely it looks more like a dive?

  36. Unhappend VAR in Leverkusen. Goal, Offisde then Goal...

  37. An overruled VAR decision in Leverkusen (?)

    1. Original decision: Goal, then offside (with VAR input), then goal (again with VAR gesture). Very strange...

    2. This comment has been removed by the author.

  38. This comment has been removed by the author.

  39. I think just a mismanagement by Vincic, maybe not the best communication with Dutch VARs (also, possible language's problems).

    1. This comment has been removed by the author.

    2. They still are. Sometimes there are a couple of new FIFA referees that don't make into the list until they pass the English tests.

    3. I am sure that the VAR did not see the last player of Porto. He made the offside to onside, but this should never happen that the VAR do not recognise a Player.
I think that AR1 said after the first Change of the decision that they have to check it another time because of the Porto Player who was standing there.

  40. Correct penalty to Leverkusen by Vincic

  41. Leverkusen missed the PK but (later) it was repeated after VAR intervention due to encroachment from Porto GK.

  42. First time ever that keeper is punished by VAR during a penalty in UEFA competitions? and no YC by Vincic?

    1. According to : No yellow card for Porto Goalkeeper by Vincic

    2. I did not see a yellow card too.
A mistake that is not allowed to happen.

    3. I don't know, maybe this is a very particular "instruction" by committee? I dare to guess that because we saw that this infringment went always unpunished so far. So this can be another step: "Punish it but no card..."
(unless Vincic did a clear mistake by forgetting it, of course)

  43. Possible penalty for handball in Zwayer game, only reason for play on and NO VAR intervention is a possible slight header by opponent a few before the touch, but it didn't cause a significant change of direction by ball. I think penalty to be whistled and VAR should have intervened.

  44. Clear penalty not given to Wolfsburg in minute 72. Unacceptable.

  45. Very interesting situation in Donezk-Benfica before the 1:1-equalizer by the guests:

The goal from Benfica was firstly cancelled and then they got a penalty, all by VAR in one review.
The goal scorer was, I think, offside - that's the only possible reason why the goal was cancelled there. But during the assist-pass to him, so before he gets active, a defender from Donezk fouled the passer from Benfica.

-> when there are two offenses from two different teams, the first one gets ruled in terms of game sequel.

The question is: What was the first offense. Was the foul before the goal scorer gets active or is it the other way around.

Unfortunately, I don't have a video, maybe someone has a link - very interesting situation there.

    1. I only found this one atm:

    2. Thank you. I think the foul is clear.
Also, the whole decision is right - the foul is before the scorer gets active.

    3. could it be that the VAR missed an offside right before the final action of this moment took place?!

  46. Another clear penalty not given in minute 83 to Wolfsburg. He clearly got the leg just before the ball.

    1. This one is a clear penalty.
What are Gil and Mazeika doing?

  47. Olympiakós Pireás - Arsenal
    Felix Zwayer (Sascha Stegemann)

    63' Penalty (handling) to Arsenal?
74' Second Yellow Card (reckless) OLY no.11? No sanction

    VAR interventions:

    Overall: good, rigorous, performance tonight

    1. 63': in Italy would be a very clear penalty with VAR intervention.

    2. 63': Penalty to Arsenal would have been possible, but for me not a very clear punishable handling (arm position not clearly unnatural, defender could expect a header of the attacker). If Zwayer was aware of the handling, no VAR intervention would be supportable for me. In case of a missed perception, the VAR could/should have invited the referee to review. Let me mention that German referees tend to be more generous towards handballs in comparison with referees from other countries. But for sure, in international games, there should be a clear line.

74': 2nd YC was possible too; borderline as the attacker tries to avoid a contact and only touches the goalkeeper with his knees (intensity wasn't high either)

Overall both decisions can still be supported, however, it is very possible to prefer both, a penalty and a 2nd YC.

  48. Predictions for next week (VAR in brackets):
    Chelsea-Bayern: Soares Dias (Martins)
    Napoli-Barcelona: Makkelie (Kamphuis)
    Real-Man City: Hategan (Marciniak)
    Lyon-Juventus: Skomina (Dankert)

    Braga-Rangers: Gözübüyük (Higler)
    Espanyol-Wolves: Massa (Valeri)
    Basaksehir-Sporting: Brych (Dingert)
    Porto-Leverkusen: Sidiropoulos (Orsato)
    Basel-APOEL: Kruzliak (Gil Manzano)
    Linz-Alkmaar: Jovanovic (de Burgos)
    Malmö-Wolfsburg: Sanchez (Martinez)
    Gent-Roma: Treimanis (Pawson)
    Ajax-Getafe: Collum (Attwell)
    Celtic-Copenhagen: Guida (di Bello)
    Sevilla-Cluj: Kuipers (van Boekel)
    Arsenal-Olympiakos: Turpin (Letexier)
    Man United-Brugge: Kovacs (Fabbri)
    Inter-Ludogorets: Siebert (Zwayer)
    Salzburg-Frankfurt: Ekberg (Frankowski)
    Benfica-Donetsk: Kralovec (Buquet)

    1. My predictions for UCL:
      Chelsea-Bayern: Orsato (ITA)
      Napoli-Barcelona: Turpin (FRA)
      Real-Man City:Kuipers (NED)
      Lyon-Juventus: Makkelie (NED)

  49. Has anyone got any words on Grinfeld, important game for him tonight under Batta's eyes?

    1. BTW, Grinfeld is suspended domestically because of ghost PK awarded by him two weeks ago.

    2. An easy going game with no problems at all. Good foul detection and all YC were correct. He made some minor mistakes by awarding at least 3 throw-ins to the wrong team in a phase of 10 minutes what made a the players a little angry. But otherwise expected performance i would say

  50. It seems that Buquet had no idea how Getefe played. Trapped in every Getafe trick. Unacceptable imo The ball was in play for just 42 minutes & 36 seconds(!). A big name is needed for the return

    1. I agree. Not a good performance by Buquet. 8,1 level.

Club Brugge - Manchester United: missed penalty and RC for SFP?
A question to those who watched the game, were there other replays of this incident later in first half?

  53. Two interesting penalty sitations in Wolfsburg-Malmö.

73' Supportable NO penalty decision imo, No VAR intervention. Though I am pretty sure that if Mažeika had given the penalty, VAR would not have intervened either.

83' Clear penalty imo. MAL player hits WOL players right leg first and then the ball. Decision, no penalty. No VAR intervention either.

    1. I think both should have been penalty. For the first one, most of us may say the touch of the defender is not strong enough but as a defender if you are behind the attacker you have to be extra careful. Your smallest touch will affect the opponent. And here defenders touch effect opponents' balance so ı believe it should have been penalty.

    2. Yeah I agree with you, Emre. I would have preferred a penalty in that situation as well but what I was trying to say is that I can see why VAR did not intervene, because it was a very soft touch.
The second situation I have no explanation why that wasn't a penalty.

    3. Following your arguments, I think that in the second case VAR didn't intervene exactly because there was that slight touch on the ball, after having hit opponent. This doesn't make the situation as VERY CLEAR PENALTY.
Of course Mazeika should have whistled it live.
