    1. I expect a young elite referee in Frankfurt. But this season seems to give plenty of opportunity for Second Category referees.

  2. Wow, Fran Jovic in Leverkusen-Nice in front of Jaap Uilenberg. I must say I did not expect this, great match for him. Duje Strukan, cat2, also with his debut in Europa League. I am very happy to see new, young, Croatian referees appointed, I really hope they will do well.
Congratulations also to Ms Frappart on her Europa league debut.

    1. Agree, and I think that both Jovic and Strukan are quite good!

  5. Excelentes nombramientos para arbitros españoles!!

  6. Excellent appointment for Jovic in front of Uilemberg; with all respect I think that Mrs Frappart seems a little bit overrate by Rosetti. Maybe some 2nd category official or some other female officials deserve to be appointed like her.
I didn't expect Del Cerro Grande in EL; it seems a temporary demotion to me.
    Good to see back Kraloves

  7. Stéphanie Frappart is getting closer to EURO 2020. Now we can be quite sure that committee has big plans for her in case of good performances shown. Important observer in Leicester.
Welcome to the new generation of Croatian referees, I must say that a game like Bayer Leverkusen - Nice is a very big assignment for a debut! You can argue that committee has very big expectations on Fran Jović.
We have a Finnish debut as well, and that's a new try by committee after Gestranius, who didn't convince too much (my opinion).
A very good game for Hernández Hernández as well, while del Cerro gets Europa League as there are already two Spanish referees in Champions League matchday 1.
Zwayer still in Europa League, he must convince committee again before being back in Champions League.
Good to see Kralovec in a game.
For Kehlet it is a similar situation like Gestranius, after some CL appearances, they didn't manage to make the step and now it seems they have returned "normal" Category 1 referees.

    1. I think that the appointments for Gestranius, Kehlet and also Madden are typical ones; experienced referees in potentially quite heated games.
Has Kehlet been injured? I don´t remeber seeing his name earlier this year. Madden and Gestranius has had some games this season, so I think they are still trusted by committee, and experienced referees are always needed.

    2. How sure are you that Frappart is being prepped for the Euros? I’m not trying to deny it, but it seems difficult to measure in this situation. Normally, most referees debuting in the EL less than a year before the tournament would have no shot. But then again, none of those other referees have experience in a WWC Final... it’s a very unique situation and it will be interesting to see how it plays out.

    3. About Zwayer : After several really very bad matches he is back on ground zero and this is more than well deserved.

      Delete
    4. Maybe it is the time for UEFA to focus on another German referee, unless Zwayer's spot on the WC 2022 is locked and they must prepare him.

      Delete
    5. About Zwayer: this seems like a sensible appointment. PSV-Granada isn’t a small game, and we all know Granada may be very difficult to referee. So a more experienced referee seems sensible, hence why they’ve given it to an Elite referee who they may consider to be on low form. Plus, I think Zwayer’s style will serve UEFA well with Granada involved, so this appointment seems like a match made in heaven.

    6. Siebert or Stieler, but Siebert is younger. Brych (45) and DFB will have to decide by 8 November whether he will continue in 2021.

      Delete
  8. Would it be better if female officials can get promoted from Women Elite to Men Third and work their way up? It would give the appointmens a lot more fairness and it would be easier to assess their appointments and performances as well.

    1. Can you clarify for me how the current system works in comparison? As Frappart is the first referee to really take this path, I think it is still unclear exactly how UEFA incorporates her experience in the Women’s game to their assignments in the Men’s game. Let me know if you know more information on this subject.

      Delete
    2. Female referees who pass the men's fitness test are eligible to be considered for both men's and women's matches.
Appointing Frappart to Euro 2020 will be a huge PR success for UEFA, after giving her the 2019 Super Cup, and UEFA will do everything they can to make it happen.

      Delete
    3. I have a feeling that UEFA is preparing the way for England and France to have two referees each at Euro: Taylor & Oliver, respectively Turpin & Frappart.

      Delete
    4. The Dutch FA expects two referees as well. If Kuipers continues, then they expect both Makkelie and Kuipers to be appointed as referees

      Delete
  9. If someone wrote this as a prediction in comments, I would probably think that he/she is crazy, but obviously there is a shift towards more chances for new referees.

I dont understand how Jovic got such highly reputable game for a debut, but good luck to him. I just hope he doesnt make a step back with a potential bad performance.

  10. Am I the only one having a problem with Frapparts appointment?

How many of you can see a male referee in womens UEL/UCL in the future? I understand the principle of appointing the best but that would rule most female FIFAs out of any competitions as most of them are not even in the highest tier of male football in their national leagues unlike their male collegues.

Nothing away from Frappart herself tho, I think she is a great referee. My only issue is with the equality and transparency of this decision.

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. I don’t have any problem with the appointment, as long as it is based on merit. I am not aware of any reason to believe it’s not merited.

It is difficult, as an onlooker, to compare Frappart’s qualifications directly with her male competitors, because none of those competitors have the vast experience in the women’s game that Frappart has. It is unclear how heavily UEFA weigh this experience; there is no precedent for how this is handled. Certainly a very interesting situation to keep tabs on.

      Delete
    2. It is merited only if you consider her FWWC19 experience equivalent with men's UEFA competitions. If that is the case, why only Frappart and not open the door also to others (e.g. Monzul - who got U21, or Staubli - who actually got a men's game at FU17WC)?

  12. According to Viljanen's appointment and debut can we expect more newly promoted referees in 2nd group to be appointed in Europa league group stage ? Like Tschudi, Christofi, Godinho. All 3 of them have the quality to officiate these kind of matches.

    1. I hope so. Specially Christofí, I watched him for the first time in Latvia-Andorra Nations League a month ago and he had a quite good performance.

    4. To be honest the El Classico of this season doesn't have the Sonorous sound of it or I rather say it doesn't have the appeal, even as a Barcelona fan I am not looking forward to that match, so maybe explains why there is a change of guard in respect to the referee being appointed, thus providing carlos Velasco the perfect time to try a different hand when the two teams are not so much in thier best of days in recent years

    2. Good to see Jarred Gillett as VAR in a Premier League game. Unless I've missed something I believe he's one of the first select group 2 referees to do so this season.

  22. From now on, DFB will provide information about on-going VAR checks in first and second division matches on Twitter for transparency reasons. They hope to make the procedure more clear, so everyone is able to understand what is going on on the pitch and for what reason an incident is checked by the VAR. Tweets will include the referee's decision, reason for check and the final decision after check.

    3. I would say missed 2nd YC for Young Boys #5 at 92’. Even if Roma #33 had an exaggerated reaction, YC was mandatory.
Not a good performance by Del Cerro Grande this evening: a lot of inconsistency, some missed YCs.
Prior to 1-1, possible VC for Roma #33

  25. Very good football match in Poznań but also correct penalty for handball awarded by Dabanović (07'). Apart from that, rightly rejected penalty shout (10'), correct but quite harsh YC for reckless attack (17'), missed YC for reckless tackle (31') and good, firm presence.

    1. Agreed - just tuned in for some minutes and Viljanen seems quite promising on a manner level, not really a challenging match.

    2. He shouldn't bare being told to "f**k off" by Dundalk players though without reprimanding them (90').

      Delete
    3. Off-the-ball violent conduct (striking) offence by a Dundalk player missed by Viljanen (+97') - this was in the visual control of AR1/FO inside the penalty area. Freekick only given, probably only on the cries of the struck Molde player.

  35. Wow, what a fascinating game in Poznań. Dabanović handled it very well.

    Key Match Incidents:
07' - correct penalty for deliberate handling
10' - rightly rejected penalty appeal
    15' - good wait-and-see onside at 1-1 (AR2-REF)
    46' - correct play-on call in a DOGSO scenario
    48' - extremely difficult situation for AR1 at 2-2, rather no-offside

    Disciplinary:
17' - YC #05 LPO for reckless foul, harsh but OK, dissent by #25 LPO
31' - missed YC #15 LPO for reckless tackle
88' - potential YC #15 LPO for reckless kick
90' - YC #06 LPO for reckless tackle, correct

    Overall:
Firm and distant manner, not interested in chatting with players, refereeing what is in front of him. Good positioning. Well done, 8.5 from me!

    1. Maybe I’m the only one, but I think that penalty at 8’ is wrong. LOTG state that “it is not usually an offence if the ball touches a player’s hand/arm when a player falls and the hand/arm is between the body and the ground to support the body, but not extended laterally or vertically away from the body”
I think this is exactly the aforementioned case.

      Delete
    2. We are taught that it's an offence if you try to block a shot or pass.

      Delete
    3. I would like to see more comments... for me very interesting situation

      Delete
    4. Actually I don’t think he was trying to block a pass or a shot, he was simply trying not to fall heavily on the ground and, since LOTG allow the defender to do so, and I cannot spot any movements of the arm towards the ball to make the handling deliberate, to me this is a play-on situation

IMO supportable, clear pulling, slight rotation of the attacker. The question about intensity remains, though.

      Delete
    4. Mmmh rewatching it, the intensity of the holding is not clear, one can have the doubt player deceived referee to get the foul, however I think basically the call can be supported without the contrary evidence.

      Delete
    5. IMO no foul would be the better call, however DOGSO RC isn't wrong/supportable.

  39. There is a possible offside situationbefore Leicester goal. An attacker was lying down close to keeper, this would have been deeply analyzed, in case, by VAR. Without it, I think too difficult for AR1.

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. There was really nothing to analyze, it was in split seconds, the person who was on the floor was the one who passed the ball to the goal scorer and the ball was in the net withing a split seconds and player on the floor had no time to even influence the goal keeper, I will even argue that the ball was in front of the player on the ground

One advantage should have been stopped and Milan player should receive YC.
In my opinion not the best fitness condition: often too far away and only walking on the pitch.

  43. Interesting situations in Sparta Prague - LOSC.
38' - Potentially missed 2nd YC for Lille (SPA - holding)
45+2' - Possible penalty kick for Sparta. R originally whisteled a penalty, but after AR's intervention only DFK. IT seemed to be wrong decision since PK should have been whisteled because the foul was on the line.

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. 55' - too early whistled - clear advantage for Lille should have been awarded.
Not very convincing performance from Strukan in my view

      Delete
    2. Regarding the 38' situation (Botman holding Pavelka), player cannot be cautioned for SPA when the advantage was applied. On the other hand, I believe these kinds of holding offenses (holding an apponent in possesion with zero intent to play the ball) should always be punished by YK for unsporting behavior. So Botman should have been shown a 2nd YK for unsporting behavior and sent off - crucial mistake.

I think that VAR would have intervened, no contact at all, rather simulation by attacker.

    1. No contact, haha??? That is celar penalty!

      Delete
    2. I won't say there is no contact. In the shot from the goal camera you can clearly see there is contact with the defender's back.

I do agree this is not a penalty kick. The defender has a right for his position and is "not moving into the way of an opponent", as the LOTG it states.

      Delete
    3. IMO penalty should not be awarded, but it's not a crucial mistake, because contact can be seen.

      Delete
    4. I see a clear contact. IMO penalty. Never a crucial mistake

      Delete
    5. Defender moved back (look the camera behind the goal) and he hit the attacer with the ball in his possesion, so clear penalty and yellow card for defender (promising attack)

      Delete
    6. Clear penalty. He blocked move with his back.

      Delete
    7. Quite laughable that nowadays people seem to think contact is synonym for foul.
No penalty here! It will be supported but by structurally calling these penalties a referee will never be considered top elite.

    8. There is contact, but not enough for a penalty kick. Football is a contact sport and not every contact is a foul.

    1. You must be discussing the correct simulation call at around 60 minutes. There was another incident with Omonoia 11 which can never be a penalty.

I watched the match and a solid performance from Madden. It surprises me that he was not in champions league and I can’t understand why he has never moved to Elite. Especially when you consider some of the Elite performances we are seeing at the moment.

    3. Wrong penalty.

    4. I think that reading all the answers, we can have the solution.
Indeed this should be just a supportable call, nothing black or white, one can't say 100% correct, 100% wrong, there will be different opinions. So it is up to referee to decide whether player used malice to touch the ball and stop it wiht that arm, or it was something unavoidable due to the movement of defender. I think that just watching the incident, we can't have any evidence, so referee should be supported.

      Delete
    5. The evidence is in the LOTG quoted above by Anonymous @19:37: “when a player falls and the hand/arm is between the body and the ground....”
