No problems for Turpin so far ...
ReplyDeleteGood luck to all, they sure will need it
ReplyDeleteGood luck to Turpin's team !!!
ReplyDeleteGood luck to Turpin. For him i hope that his performance will be great. He deserves that. However for me this appointment still stinks. Im not saying that Turpin is not worthy of this final. I think he is one of the best that has not had the final yet. However no matter how good Turpin will do today. To me it is very clear (also looking at the 4th official) that the appointment is political only. The best UEFA ref of this year is not in the middle today. That clearly was Makkelie. And that still leaves a sour taste in my mouth. Just like two years ago when Orsato got the call instead of Lahoz who was much better back then. I can only hope that Collina doesnt give a rats behind about politics and that performance principle will be leiding at the next WC.
ReplyDelete"He deserves that. However..." XD
DeleteI hope (and hope being the operative word :)) that this is the last such insufferable comment tonight. Let's be fair, do credit to our blog community and indiscriminately focus on the performance tonight. Good luck to all!
Aspiring female officials will no doubt take note of this blog's approach to allegations of political appointments, and look forward to this approach being continued in the upcoming season.
DeleteIf you want to discuss that issue, I'd kindly note you towards my comment on the Conference League final post, where I'd be happy to engage and present my views (and invite others to do so too!).
DeleteOn this post however - at least for the duration of the match - I think it is best if we focus on the CL final.
Kits for tonight?
ReplyDeleteI think blue
DeleteBlue kits it will be, I saw the blue socks during the warm-up :D
DeleteBlue for refs
DeleteWhite for Real Madrid
Red for Liverpool
= French flag
Good luck for Turpin and his team today
ReplyDeleteGood luck to the French team tonight. 3rd biggest fixture in the world on home turf for them tonight.
ReplyDeleteKick off delayed until 21:15 because there are hundreds of Liverpool fans who can't enter the stadium due to a security problem.
ReplyDeleteKick off is delayed again to 21:30
DeleteTurpin's team for the 2nd training.
ReplyDeleteUEFA surely has questions to answer after this massive delay to the Champions League Final.
ReplyDeleteIn my opinion the only other event that's comparable to a UEFA Champions League Final is the NFL "Super Bowl". And you would never ever see a situation like this happen.
DeleteA similar Super Bowl situation I recall from 2011, when hundreds ticket-holding fans in Dallas were denied attendance because some temporarily added seating was not ready on time.
DeleteCorrect, but kickoff was not delayed nor were there scenes like those outside the Stade de France today.. Furthermore, some of those fans were handsomely compensated by the NFL/Dallas Cowboys. While others decided to take it to court, where they won their case and were awarded thousands.
DeleteI think we are allowed to blame UEFA for this organization of the final: simply unacceptable.
ReplyDeleteMaybe we can next time organize this final in Tirana too... They did have their things in order, at least, with risky groups of supporters.
ReplyDeleteOn a more serious note: it's terrible what happens. What a shame for UEFA.
Yet another delay of the kick off
ReplyDelete21h36 is the new time
This is getting embarrassing.....
:36 in particular :)
Delete21:36 it is indeed, my mistake :D
DeleteTerrible moment for France... Shame on UEFA for this terrible organization...
ReplyDeleteTirana had better organization than this.
ReplyDeleteShame on UEFA. Unacceptable.
ReplyDeleteWith the entire world watching its marquee event. This is the image UEFA wants to transmit to the world? Fans having to resort to climbing over fences to enter the stadium. What an embarrassment! Shame on UEFA for trying to scapegoat the paying Liverpool fans. Trying to blame them for "showing up late". #CeferinOut #SaveUEFA
ReplyDeleteWe saw 3 days ago a perfect organization of ECL in Tirana with a very potential risk of a clash between two groups of ultras. What happened today is a shame. I have no words
ReplyDeleteClement Turpin perfectly happy to fade into the background so far, keeping the whistles to an absolute minimum. Only 5 fouls so far 30 minutes in.
ReplyDeleteExcellent refereeing !!!
DeleteIs it me or when English sides are involved (usually) the games are more open, more focussed on football, better to watch and "easier" to referee.
ReplyDeleteSo far, so good
You are correct, but I'm interested to see how Real Madrid, in particular, respond in the second half. I think both teams are aware of the lenient line so far, and are just starting to test that line. I think that if things get more desperate, particularly for Real, they will try to test that line more.
Delete36' hold on Diaz. Commentator said, "Almost definetely should have been a YC." Perhaps Turpin thought that second Real defender would have stopped promising attack by Diaz. Otherwise, YC warranted.
ReplyDeleteOffside benzema
ReplyDeleteFirst important moment and we have a long wait with VAR. Very difficult situation.
ReplyDeletePerfect decision of AR1 in a superb difficult situation
DeleteGOL!!! Last touch comes of Fabinho in a deliberate play.
ReplyDeleteTouch by Fabhino didn't look deliberate, so good call IMO.
ReplyDeleteOffside. Correct decision
ReplyDeleteVery difficult situation. Correct decision IMO
ReplyDeleteThis VAR check is far too long.
ReplyDeleteFabinho obviously and deliberately tackles for the ball. There is nothing accidental about going into a tackle.
ReplyDeleteExcellent decision by the AA1
ReplyDeleteWhen you come with a tackle I think that it is a deliberate play because you want to play that ball. Moreover, there was another touch by a Liverpoool player. Wrong decision IMO.
ReplyDeleteLiverpool defenders were blocking a shot on goal, therefore it is treated as a deflection and the final decision is offside. Watching it in slow motion gives a wrong impression of deliberate play
DeleteFabinho is not blocking his goal. Fabinho's tackle is back towards his goal.
DeleteEven if you want to block a shot, you know that you can play the ball. In my opinion, they played in a deliberate way...
DeleteDoesnät matter. The tackle is deliberate. But you have to look at the play at the ball. Clearly not deliberate. It accidentally changed direction and hit a sliding knee. Never a deliberate play on the ball.
DeleteYes, it is offside but Fabinho assists.
ReplyDeleteExcellent refereeing in the first half Turpin and his team
ReplyDeleteLast touch that caused the backpass was deflection, so no offside after that, but before? Before the deflection, I noticed a deliberate play by another Liverpool player? Sshould be rewatched, maybe assessed as save?
ReplyDeleteDoesn't matter if it touched another Liverpool player before that deflection becuase it also touched Real Madrid's player. So it's a pass no matter what.
DeleteVery difficult situation. While Manuel Gräfe (referee expert for German TV) says the decision is correct in his view, I am not convinced. For me it rather looked like a deliberate play by the LIV defender. As the VAR check took very, very long, it would have been the best solution to let Turpin decide. One should have shown him the pictures on an OFR as it was a matter of interpretation.
ReplyDeleteDisagree. This was easy. Clearly never deliberate play. Benzema is in a clear offside situation. So there is nothing difficult. Ball accidentally bounced on Liverpool's sliding knee after first touching the Real Madrid player. Should have been solved by VAR in less than 20 seconds.
DeleteMaking the decision to go in for a tackle is not accidental. And any contact that is made with the ball is deliberate. AR1 had no idea who the ball actually came off of. He did the safe and smart thing by throwing the flag up and allowing VAR to sort it out. But they sorted out wrongly.
ReplyDeleteYou are very wrong. The tackle is a deliberate act but not the play on the ball. He did not make a deliberate play on the ball. The ball hit him after changing direction. It's not about the overall action. It's about the exact play at the ball.
DeleteMy 2 cents: It is a 50/50 situation, if offside was not called by AR1, VAR might allow the goal. The check will be long for sure. Either explanation is fine. But AR1 anyway did a good job to spot the situation for the offside detection because the goal keeper was out of position.
ReplyDeleteI think it was a clear deflection off the Liverpool defender, not a deliberate play since the touch occurred mere moments after the ball came off two other players (including the attacker), no time to react or adjust to the ball. To me it is a pretty clear (if complicated) decision, and I think we can be a bit critical about how long Brisard took to check the decision.
ReplyDeleteI would never be so critical with VAR for the long time, this was even a short time if we consider the level of difficulty of this call and you can see that some people disagree here. However, I'm sure Irrati had his say as well!
DeleteTrue, it was a complicated decision, and speed is never the first priority. So it's only a minor critique here. It did last for quite a while though and I think it could have been faster.
DeleteFlawless performance so far
ReplyDeleteCorrect offside for me.
ReplyDeleteWhy not allow Turpin to see if he (as the main referee) thinks the touch was deliberate or accidental. I don't like him just taking the word of the VAR (who took entirely too long) and that being the end of it.
ReplyDeleteAgreed, especially if you see him saying to the players „I don‘t know“. It would have been the best solution. The check took very long anyway, so why don‘t have a look at the pictures?
DeleteIf anything, no matter what "HE" decides in the end. "HE" can better "sell" the call by simply taking a look.
DeleteMissed PK for Real Madrid in the disallowed goal situation?
ReplyDeletehttps://twitter.com/alvaroba91/status/1530648168605446144
Italian commentators confirmed that they got communication VAR checked a possible foul for a penalty as well. I forgot to write.
DeleteThe only other option that the defender had was to allow Real Madrid score
ReplyDelete55' looked like Turpin missed foul on Diaz and called Diaz for contact afterwards.
ReplyDeleteThat FK decision was illogical indeed, also reflected by the reactions of the players.
DeleteGood play on at 58'. No penalty.
ReplyDeleteTurpin has to be careful now, because the players know his lenient approach so far - this was sufficient so far (quite fair match) but this could easily turn into a hotter atmosphere.
ReplyDeleteIn 50' (again) not a YC for what I think is a clear SFP offence. Turpin does that on purpose obviously but again, he has to be careful with that.
Regarding the disallowed goal in 1H, I didn't expect such a discussion here, for me simply a correct decision by Turpin's crew: deflection by the defender, no deliberate character in this action
Can somebody clip this offense? I don't recall it.
DeleteSorry, I meant 'SPA' - confused the short forms :D
DeleteExcellent ONSIDE by AR2 for 0-1 with another player in offside.
ReplyDeleteGreat onside by Gringore!
ReplyDeleteFirst YC of the game, I like when referees are forced to issue it, sorry :) But this must be refereeing!
ReplyDeleteExcellent Yc 62'
ReplyDeleteCorrect YC for Fabinho (reckless tackle)
ReplyDeleteCorrect YC to Fabinho for reckless tackle.
ReplyDeletehttps://twitter.com/alvaroba91/status/1530648168605446144
ReplyDeleteBall was played Delibretly by Fabinho. Its no deflection . The goal dissallowed incorently IMO
Push on back of Real Madrid player missed in 67' near endline, IMO.
ReplyDelete76th minute should have been a yellow card for Mane, studs to ankle. Turpin has been lenient today but that was too much, it is closer to red than to no card at all.
ReplyDeleteIt is interesting that there was no reaction from Real Madrid as a result of this. The fact that the temperature didn't rise as a result of this challenge is indicative of the sort of game on our hands, and seems to ratify Turpin's tactical choice to be lenient, to be in the background, and to mostly let this game referee itself.
No particular discussions about the disallowed goal, as Real Madrid won the cup, so also good thing in terms of luck for referee. The rest, we could still talk about the leniency and some missed cards, but for committee this doesn't matter. So an OK performance without focus on referee and that's what UEFA wanted. As always, going deeply in card management, knowing how it works even in major finals, seems to be useless. It can be an expected level according to "modern refereeing", a performance with some points for improvement for a strict observer, the same I said for Vincic. I think that in the three finals only Kovacs distinguished himself in a way from this trend.
ReplyDeleteAgreed. This UEFA knockout stage got the finale it deserved. Overall, Turpin + team could/should be satisfied with their final performance.
DeleteHow can the match be ended after 5 minutes, with a substitution in extra time and time wasting by the Spanish? Very bad (extra) time management…
ReplyDeleteGood job by Turpin. Madrid winning means that there will be no talk about the incident in the first half. Some minor mistakes, but full match control, very lenient approach as it is asked for especially in a CL final. Rosetti will be very satisfied. Congratulations to Clément Turpin.
ReplyDeleteFull agree
DeleteEasy match and expected level for Turpin, maybe one or two calls we can say he was too lenient on, but he did what he had to do. Special congratulations to both assistant referees who were the real stars of the show tonight as far as officiating goes (rare to say in the era of VAR). Way of them nailed difficult offside/onside decisions.

ReplyDeleteDifferently from what I suspected above, the atmosphere didn't become as hot and tensed as I expected it to, although Turpin consequently continued his lenient approach to foul detection and use of disciplinary measures.
ReplyDeleteThe offence in 76' was (theoretically) a RC infringement in my book, open studs on ankle - Turpin's decision to not even book the defender was in line with everything we saw in the past weeks in UEFA refereeing.
With that in mind - I mean UEFA's vision in general and the subsequent use of disciplinary measures especially in 2022's Finals - I don't really want to criticize Turpin for missed YC etc.
In general, Turpin and also his ARs (!!) can be very satisfied with their display in this year's CL final - congrats!
Tribute to masterclass performance of Mateu Lahoz last year, and remind on same!!!
ReplyDeleteTurpin can be satisfied with his performance. For me, 8.1.
ReplyDeleteI am very sure that the system is not the same for this level. In that case all refs would get less than 8,4 when they ignore clear yellow cards. It's most likely directives. Just look at the ridiculous dive by Vinicius that Turopin clearly saw but still let play continue.
DeleteNice to see that the VMOs can also participate in the ceremony, showing that the referees on the pitch and in the van are a team.
ReplyDeleteA good moment for the French refereeing. Congratulations Clément !
ReplyDeleteTbh, your comments read a bit chauvinistic and Turpin fanboying ;)
DeleteCongratulations, good job by Turpin and his team.
ReplyDeleteCongratulations for Turpin and the refereeing crew, good performance in a football focused game.
ReplyDeleteMicheal Oliver for the super cup?
ReplyDeleteSame idea
DeleteNot meant to be rude from my side, but in general, I don't understand why many people here are always hyping and overpraising referees from their own country, without ever being critical.
ReplyDeleteI really appreciate the few regular users here that are always try to be critical and objective with regard to a compatriot. Thank you.
You're right. These days, the blog is more 'Turpin = French = bad' or 'Italian are overrated thanks to the committee" or "English are the best' (written by John Adams from Portsmouth).. Us, referees, should be as neutral as possible and no biased by other feelings like fans tends to do..
